  1. Parrot, I totally agree that there is nothing like listening to the vinyl itself. But, there are some early rockabilly and soul 45's that my Dad and I have never found on CD. It'd be nice to have these songs available for more convenient listening while I'm in the car, cutting grass, or exercising. Granted, I could simply choose from the 3,000+ CD's I already have, but there are some gems that I just can't live without. . . I appreciate the recommendation of SoundForge, I'll check it out more tonight after work. Jeff
  2. I finally got around to building a new computer with the help of a friend. I'd like to start transferring some of my Dad's vinyl to CD. Are any of you using software that really impresses you? Thanks- Jeff
  3. Sorry fellas, the finish would probably help. . .I'll look tonight to be 100%, but I thought they were raw. There is a stain on them with what appears to be an oil finish. It's definitley not a laquer or poly finish. It reminds me of my old Cornwalls which were CWO's. . .hence the reason I suspect some kind of oil finish. I'll try to post some pics tonight so you guys can see the problems. Jeff
  4. I snagged a pair of '79 LaScalas on Saturday. Those of you in Milwaukee, they were in the ones on the Journal over the weekend. My post is for two reasons: First, these aren't the cleanest LaScalas I've purchased. The veneer is VERY dry. There is no poly or topcoat on them. I've tried some lemon oil, but the speakers are absorbing the heck out of that stuff. What else can I try that will preserve what's left of the existing finish? I know we've been over and over this, but our search function is really weak. Is BLO still the way to go? Second, the difference in sound among varying years of LaScalas or other Heritage speakers is quite evident. This is my 3rd pair (still own 2pr) of Scalas and I'm amazed by how different each pair sounds. The other pair I own now is from '84. I do have AA networks swapped in those, but they still sound different than the '79s I just bought. The '79s have Alnico mids and tweeters, with AA networks as well. The differences are subtle, but the '79s seem a bit more "laid back" and for whatever reason, the bass seems tighter. I think it's time for a pair of AA's to go to Mr. Crites for a rebuild. I'd like to compare them then. . . Jeff
  5. Tom, I'm not sure where you're from, but you're welcome to hear my dual 120's any time. I have them matched with LaScalas, so not quite the same sound as the THX line, but you'll get an idea of the insane output from these subs. I'm just south of Milwaukee, WI. Jeff
  6. Bill, I'm very interested in Bob's networks. Email me at tidmack@yahoo.com if they're available for purchase. Thanks! Jeff
  7. Craig, I wouldn't expect a different answer from you! Mark, I heard a pair of horns with my Mac 2105 and was really impressed. The guy I bought the amp from had horns at the time and used them for my audition. I will say that I haven't heard a lot of Mac SS, but the 2100, 05, 2125, etc. sound pleasing to my ears. Jeff
  8. I rarely post, but lurk off and on for what seems like 6-7 years. Great thread. My only regret was purchasing Alnico K55's for my LaScalas some years ago. I couldn't tell the difference between the V's and the M's. Fortunatley, like most Klipsch parts and speakers, I was able to break even on the sale of the drivers. Overall, I've gone from '87 LaScala's with AL's and an Onkyo Integra 809 to '87 Scalas with a Mac 2105 and 113 preamp, to '87 Scalas with AA's and the Mac, to '84 Cornwalls and the Mac, back to '87 LaScalas with the Mac, to '84 LaScalas with the Mac, sold the '84s (regretfully) and went back with the '87s, to the '87 Scalas with Mac and twin Klipsch Ultra subs, to Cornwall 3's with the mac and Ultras, back to the '87s with the Mac and subs. I am honestly in heaven with my LaScalas, subs, and Mac 2105/113 setup. I'm always tempted to get a pair of K-horns to hear the difference in sound, but that's quite a bit of money to spend just to compare. Not to hijack, but can anyone comment on the sound difference between the K-horns and LaScalas with the Klipsch Ultras? Jeff
  9. Clarence, I'm not quite sure what the problem is, but if you're questioning my integrity, you should probably chill out. If you recall, I bought a pair of Cornwalls and my buddy bought a pair. I never opened mine because they were for a home theatre project that was still in the mix. He wanted to see how his Corns sounded with my Mac stuff and I had a chance to listen for about a week on my system. He ended up not really digging the Corns and I put them on eBay for him. My pair is still boxed and hasn't been sold. In the meantime, I bought a pair of Ultras and am completely happy with my LaScalas and subs. I can't get over a completely horn loaded speaker, and in the end, prefer LaScalas over Cornwalls. Uh oh, did that just open another LaScala/Cornwall debate? Have a beer man- Jeff
  10. Pete, It stinks to let the Monte go, I've wanted a legit '70 SS 454 since I was 15. With only about 3800 made, they're not easy to come by. But. . .there's some land here in town I have my eye on and the car would provide some extra down payment cash. We'll see what happens. . . Jeff
  11. Boxes are 41" X 28 1/2" X 18 1/2". Hope this helps.
  12. Bill, Clarence is referring to my pm to him earlier in the year when I got the speaks. He was looking for Corns and I let him know I had them. I haven't been in a hurry to sell, as I thought I may end using these in the rec room. . .but the horn loaded sound of the LaScalas has me hooked and I most likely wouldn't use them for a while.
  13. Hi guys, If you saw this post in the mods section too, it's because I'm dumb and don't know how to post in 2 channel the first time. Summer has kept me from the board for a while. . .mostly working on cars. I'm pretty excited about my '70 SS 454 Monte Carlo on eBay. . .yeah, I pretty much just said that to plug the auction (no shame!) Anyways, last winter I came up with the idea to order some Cornwall III's for a home theatre project. In the end, I bought a sub for my LaScalas and am in audio bliss. . .for now at least. I have a pair of walnut Cornwall III's still in the boxes. $2500 and they're yours. Drop me an email at tidmack@yahoo.com as I probably won't lurk around the board too much until the weather cools down. ttyl Jeff

  15. Man, you are getting hammered about the Sportster! What a lot of the guys here are not mentioning though is that the Sporty is probably the customizing favorite of many speed shops. That bike is SO customizable. . .like Chevy's 350. Do I think that after a season, you'll start looking for a bigger bike? Probably. Most do, BUT you might be in the category that really digs the Sportster and its endless possibilities. Just food for thought. . .
  16. Hey, very cool to own your first bike, especially a new one! Here's a suggestion: If you can swing it, have any of your add on's like exhaust, chrome, seat, bars, etc done when you buy the bike at the dealership. Most importantly when purchased with the bike new, all of the additions are then covered under your bike's warranty, including exhaust and carb/FI modifications. Otherwise, aftermarket parts could void parts/all of your warranty. Second, you "could" finance the add on's. I'm not a huge fan of paying interest, but some Vance and Hines short shots sound really nice on 1200 Sportsters. Good luck! Jeff
  17. I haven't heard them side by side, but I own LaScalas with a pair of Klipsch Ultra subs. I have heard K-horns several times. IMO, my LaScala/sub setup at least equals what I've heard out of K-horns. I might even be a little bold and say I think they outperform a pair of K-horns. Again, no meters, no fancy equipment, just my ears. I think there are a few here who have K-horns AND LaScalas/sub who could give a side by side review. I'm in Milwaukee, WI. You're welcome to check out my system if you're in the area. Jeff
  18. Interesting stuff everyone, I appreciate the insight. I'll probably keep doing what I'm doing now (one when I get home from work, off before bed, on most of weekend), but it's interesting to learn that even my SS equipment requires warm-up. Cool! Jeff
  19. Hey guys, Just read a thread in the Subwoofers section and many there mentioned they leave their subs on all the time. That got me wondering: is it better to keep equipment on all the time? I currently will power up my system (Mac 2105 SS, 113 preamp SS, LaScalas, and Ultra 2 subs/amp) when I get home from work, but it gets turned off before I go to bed. I guess my thought has always been why have it on if I'm not using it? But, I'm curious to know if equipment takes a beating by being turned off and on. Jeff
  20. Dean, Good one! Hey, I'd love to help ya out, but I can't swing your price. . .although worth the $ IMO. I was actually going to buy them, send mine to Bob for a rebuild and then reoffer them back to the forum when mine were done. Jeff
  21. Gary, I'll take 'em if Bob doesn't. I need a pair for my LaScalas. Jeff
  22. Parrot, I don't post too often, but your last message made me spit my food out! Still lol!!! Jeff
  23. Jay, Thanks for the input. I'll look into the M-revo card at newegg (their prices rock!). Jeff
  24. Fellas- This post is actually for my Dad. A buddy of mine is building him a new desktop pc and Dad wants to be able to record his vinyl to CD. He currently does this on his stand alone burner, but doesn't have the opportunity to edit, get rid of hiss, pops , etc. Is there a decent card out there that will accept turntable RCA's to allow my Dad to hook his turntable up to the PC? This PC will only be used to record music, surf the web, and perform MS Office type tasks. He's definitely not a gamer, so if a more basic reliable card will do the trick, that'd be a safer bet for him. Second, does anyone have any recording software recomendations? It seems like prices vary quite a bit. Will I get what I pay for or is there a point of diminishing returns for recording software? Any help is tremendously appreciated. Thanks. Jeff
