  1. I think I do have every title that Circuit carries though, at least of music that I like. But I'll keep checking back.
  2. I don't quite have the whole set, there are a lot more titles than a lot of people think, and they are gaining momentum, coming out a lot faster than before. I am up to 18 titles, which is, I think, a pretty respectable collection, and there are at least 5 or six more that I still want. I am a very enthusiastic supporter of the format, and try to encourage everyone I talk to about electronics to give it a try!!!
  3. Well, if you are definitely decided on the rectangular speakers, I would absoulutely mount them on the wall and not the ceiling. Otherwise you won't get that Fill the area with sound effect, and you might find that all you hear are the rear speakers. Good rule of thumb, round speakers-ceiling, rectangular speakers-wall. I haven't totally decided what I'm going to do for my inwall system, I might even use a RCW-5 as center channel and one as a Rear center (6.1) or maybe a seperate (traditional) center channel and a pair of RCW-5's or even RCR-5's as 7.1, or just 5.1 with one of the different types???
  4. Not to be redundant, but I think Doug is right. You can't get dts from a Non-dts disc. Everybody else's points are valid, too. I had a old GE DVD player, bought my first surround sound receiver, rented a dts disc (Bone Collector), got the little warning screen (are you sure you have dts?) I confidently clicked YES!!! and got nothing but silence I could see the piano playing but couldn't hear it. I was so upset, had no idea I needed a different DVD player. Went to Target a couple days later and couldn't find a single player that DIDN'T have dts, and some for less money than I had paid for my cheap *** GE. Of course, when I bought my first DVD player I had no idea what surround sound was, much less dts
  5. What THX demo "might" you have to trade?
  6. I've heard them and I think they're great sounding. I don't even want to say ...for an inwall. They sound great period. I'm planning to do an all Inwall HT for my upstairs bedroom using these and the RCR-5's. Which brings up another point...it sounds like you are using these for rears? You might want to check out the RCR-5's for the rears, they will give you a more diffuse sound for surround effects. I would not say that the RS-3's sound better, just that they are purpose-made to be a surround speaker. The RCW-5's will give you a more direct sound, which is maybe what you want???...
  7. How do you have it hooked up? Definitive in front running through fronts to rec.???? What does that mean? Your description says you are using a KG4.2 for Cen. Back, but I suspect you are using 2 of them, but am not familiar with either them or the KM-5's so am not sure why you would want to switch them or why that would give you more control over the Bass. I would run the Def Tech through the LFE, and the SP-1's speaker level, you will still be able to control the level of the subs even if you use speaker wire. Of course this is only one way to do it, and I really don't understand what you had in mind from your description, but I've heard the Def Tech and I think it is a better sub than even two of the SP-1's. Hope this helps. With all that equipment, you don't seem like much of a newbie, especially since you can't even go out and buy most of that stuff anymore. And most "newbies" don't know what a laserdisc player is, much less own one.
  8. You're right, it was an Original. They only released it in Pakistan. I have some "originals" I'll sell you if you want them. They have Chinese subtitles and you can choose from four different scenes to start the movie from, but other that that they seem like very professionally made DVDs. Oh, there's also the lip-sync problem on all three discs, and the complete abscence of an LFE track on Empire Strikes back. Also when I had Episode 1, before it was actually released, The voices throughout the whole movie came from all 5 channels. These hack jobs were nothing but copies of the LaserDisc versions. On another note, speaking of original vs. special edition, I read about plans to put Natalie Portman into the first one, when it's re-made. Why can't they just leave the movie alone?!!!

    2 topics in 1

There are quite a few HDCD's out there. You probably have a few and don't even realize it.
  10. I hope and pray that I will, but today I am still just a Bill!!!

    Decent music DVD's

I have to agree Fleetwood Mac The Dance is an Awesome concert video. The DVD-A version of Rumours is also a must have. Eagles Hell Freezes over is good, but Hotel California DVD-A is mind blowingly excellent!!
  12. I hate to endorse Circuit City, but I just bought six new DVD-A titles there and every one was $14.99!!! They also had several titles that I already own (and paid $25.00 for) also at $14.99. They don't have a huge selection but this is the best price I've seen!!!

    DTS / DVD's

K-19 is not DTS. Almost Every movie has DTS in the theatrical release, only a few get released on dvd with dts track. THX has nothing to do with wheter a DVD is dts or not. DTS stands for Digital Theater SYSTEMS, not "Sound." Yes, it is VERY disappointing that all these movies are released with two discs worth of crap, but no DTS soundtrack.
  14. Your profile doesn't say where you're from, so it's hard to make suggestions.
  15. That is correct, that is how you'd do it. As far as if it is worth it...Depends on the size of the room and where you sit in the room. 6.1 and 7.1 are the same thing, just whether you do it with one speaker or two. If you do 7.1, you simply have the same sound out of both surround back speakers. If it is a large room, or if you have multiple seating positions, or if the rear(s) are far away from the seating area, then yes, I'd say 7.1 would be a wise upgrade. Otherwise you'd do just as well with 6.1 and you can use that new amp to power your fronts or....

    RSW-15!!!

I'm getting a second one because it will sound better. I'm not trying to make it as loud as possible, just to sound good as possible. I'm going to put one on each side, to go along with my two rear subs (Infinity IL100s). I've had two front subs for about 2 years now and would never go back. ProDj--$1249 that is a good price! I'm getting them for much less than that, I won't tell you how much. And if it has 3dB more output, great!!! I still love my new sub, by the way!!!

    RSW-15!!!

Just got my first RSW-15 today. This sub is no Joke!!! I hooked it up and threw on a Hip-Hop CD to test it out, of course cranked the volume up all the way, and OH MY GOD!!! It shook the whole house. I don't usually crank it up all the way, but it was nice to know that I can if I want. It is awesome for the little bit of movies I've watched so far, too. The one in the store must be bad, or be hooked up wrong, because this was more than I ever expected!!! I can't beleive I'm still getting another one, what am I going to do!!! My wife's nic-nacs hanging on the wall are in serious danger!!! Anyone considering this sub has my highest recommendation!
  18. That is a tough one. I'd stay away from the Sony, unless you want to be stuck with a 4x3 set. The Panny is what I was going to suggest before I viewed your thread and saw it was already one you were considering. I don't know which 43" Hitachi you were looking at, but again, I wouldn't get locked into 4x3 at this stage in the game, you'll regret it later. The 43" widescreen Hitachi is nice, especially the new one with better stretch modes, etc. but is a little out of the $1500 range, especially if you need the stand to put it on. The Panasonic is probably one of the best values in TV's out there. Good quality for a low price, and doesn't need a stand to sit on.
  19. Why hook to a pre-amp at all? Just go from the pre-outs on the Sony to the Inputs on the Amps, and it should work fine.
  20. Boa, that IS the problem. We have the same thing with AT&T here in Minnesota. They give you digital cable, and a "digital" cable box that says "Dolby Digital" but has no digital outputs at all!! Class action lawsuits benefit no one but the lawyers, but I wonder if Dolby would be interested in someone using their logo on Non-Dolby compliant equipment. Just think of all the people who buy a Dolby/DTS surround sound receiver, plug in their analog inputs from their so-called Dolby Digital Cable box, and are completely unimpressed with the sound. I wouldn't like that if I was Dolby. And if you don't think it happens, you'd be surprised how many people I've talked to that have owned a surround sound system and DVD player for a year or more and didn't know they needed an optical or digital coax cable to get DD/DTS.
  21. It can ABSOLUTELY NOT be done!!! I know this for a fact. You can record from the internal HD tuner only (or another HD tuner with firewire output, which at this point DO NOT EXIST. The only STB with firewire is the new Samsung SIRT-165, which is for off air only. There is a chance that you can run your cable feed directly into the Samsung and have it decode your cable, bypassing your cable box entirely, but I have not heard of anyone doing this, and if it does work you'll only get unscrambled channels (i.e. locals) which leaves you in the same position as using your internal HD tuner. At least you HAVE a TV with firewire though, consider yourself lucky. The JVC HD-VCR has component OUT, but again, only firewire IN. The Samsung box has component in, but it doesn't accept 1080i. Just Hollywood's way of denying our Fair Use Rights, and 99% of the country, even people who are up to date on technology, like the people that post on these boards, aren't even aware of it. I work nights and own a HDTV and an HD tuner that I shelled out good money for, and I can't even record my High Definition shows to watch when I get home. That being said, if you want to sell your Mits DVHS for cheap let me know .
  22. ---------------- Serisouly those new monster cables that are like $25.00 that claim to be thx certified. Come on????!??!?!! my worst sounding piece of radio shack cable sounds better than that..... ---------------- C'mon You're exaggerating a bit there. ---------------- Oh yes, the short clip before movies where the little guy flys arround your speakers. or makes the cow moos. Mildly entertaining. Just before my system switches into DTS to watch the movie. ---------------- THX is not a surround sound format in itself. You are not choosing to use DTS instead of THX. That being said, I think you don't need to worry about the THX standard for Ultra2. Unless you are going to go out and buy THX approved curtains, furniture, wall hangings, etc. Oh, and rebuild your entire listening room to THX specifications. On the other hand, I would feel good about any purchase of THX certified equipment, so I don't know why it's necessary to knock it. As far as your question, which I don't think anyone has answered because they were too busy THX bashing, I think that the ULTRA2 spec. is a good one to follow. Monopoles for surround back, why would you want four dipoles? You might as well use two dipoles. The surround back speakers help to anchor the sound behind you, and give you more localization, instead of just being an ambient sound all around you. Also Ultra2 is for music as well as movies, which is different from the past. Lastly, I'm not sure there ever was a specification for Mono vs. Dipoles in the original surround EX specs.
  23. Unless you have to, I wouldn't put the speakers in the cabinets. Both for the reasons that Justin gave, and also because the sound from the speakers does not move in just one direction. If you put a speaker Cabinet inside another Cabinet it will not sound the same. The engineers who design the speakers take a lot of care to avoid unwanted resonance. You'll get unwanted reflections, vibrations, etc. Compare the speaker's internal bracing with the "bracing" on your entertainment center (rap on it with your knuckles) and you'll see why it's not the best solution, even if it was perfectly at ear level. Of course the real world is always different from the ideal, and compromises must be made sometimes.
  24. SWEET! Congratulations! I don't understand why everyone who owns the Mits Integrated HDTV doesn't have one. I'm waiting for a STB with firewire so I can get one too! I hate that I can't watch my HD shows just because I work nights.
