  1. Principally for sales corner use: MINT - lots of scratches, stains and dings that don't show up in a blurry web photo or are visually undectable by a person not wearing their glases at a distance of 10 yards. (Term principally used to get a person to come and view what would otherwise be overpriced and unwanted). []
  2. To quote a common statement made in relation to engines and horsepower: 'ain't no replacement for displacement'.
  3. If you immerse the whole thing you would end up damaging the centre label. Probably not what you want. I would think you only need to immerse about 1/3 of the LP. Namely from the inner to outer tracks. Then just turn it a bit every 30 seconds or so.
  4. Well, you could try this: http://en.jinzora.com/ Touch screen might be a bit of a stretch on Linux (which is what I would put it on). However, there is a Windows release. If you set it up correctly at home it also enables you to have your music anywhere you can get a web browser going.
  5. No idea where I picked up this image but I think it answers part of the question. []
  6. Yup. Although there is one particular manufacturer that rates their amps according to how much they will deliver (at minimum) at any frequency from 20 to 20,000Hz, at (or below) rated distortion. NAD.
  7. If you know someone with a Velodyne DD series you could borrow their microphone. It's one of these: http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/ECM8000.aspx How you then hook it up to a computer is another story.
  8. Had no idea they were so ridiculously overpriced. Nevertheless, surely a decent sized ultrasonic and a small frame over the top to act as pivot would do the same job even if not as simple or easy as the linked item.
  9. Exactly. If one does not have room for Cornwalls then one is in need of a relocation.
  10. Creative English. [] Not likely to make it into an English dictionary, though. []
  11. Still playing around with them. The more I listen, the more I realise the impulsive decision to purchase the second was not without merit. The massive amp and accelerometer/servo control over the cone is the brute force solution to not being horn loaded (or ported for that matter). Toss in the parametic EQ that comes with them and the inbuilt ability to connect serially for master/slave control and it's difficult to find any fault at all.
  12. Just make sure he doesn't eat the Rolex.
  13. Wouldn't an ultrasonic be a good choice for a spring clean job? One like this: http://www.ultrasystem.com/usfeaturedprodsAudioDeskVinylClnr.html
  14. They're just really thick woollen doormats (about 3/4 of an inch thick). I bought them at the equivalent of a Wal-Mart or Kmart. Pretty cheap and do the job of protecting the floor from the metal buttons on the bottom of the risers.
  15. Either of those figures would have purchased every single audio cable I own and use for a full home theatre TWICE. It's just insane to spend that amount of money for a metre or under of cable.
  16. Yes, but 99% of receivers do not then post process the analogue input. i.e. no Audyssey, digital filtering or downmixing (7.1 to 5.1) gets applied.
  17. Not a huge step but a definite step up. At the end of the day, if you want to watch Blu-ray in 1080p and listen to HD audio then you have to get a receiver with HDMI. Period.
  18. I guess this shows what could be called my 2 channel system (which is really just part of my current series III Heritage HT). A pair of plain ol' Cornwall IIIs and a pair of plain ol' Velodyne DD-18s, plus a couple of black boxes to provide some source and amplification.
  19. Nah. A Gazillionaire wouldn't buy them. A Gazillionaire doesn't become (or remain) a Gazillionaire by such idiotic expenditure. []
  20. Looks like the HDMI ports on the rear are of two types. One which supports the HDMI controls (marked ARC) and one which doesn't. Switch the cable to the non ARC port. Doesn't look like you have a setting within software to turn the feature on or off. Odd. I have a Panasonic Blu-ray player and Panasonic TV and both have the ability to turn off the feature (Panasonic call it Viera link). There's some reference to 'HDMI Control' on Sony's site. The manual for your TV is just terrible. []
  21. Still toying with placement. Where they are located in the images is convenient but may not be the final resting place. I have the ability to put them on the side walls but moving these heavy suckers around requires planning and serious motivation, both of which are lacking at present. Heck, the new addition sat in its box for a week before I finally opened it up and installed it. [:$] At present, the bottom end is fuller, and by that I mean audibly even across the 25' front wall (and the rest of the room). It was well set up when there was only one but with the two it seems, well, more balanced. I know people claim a well placed sub should not be able to be located (i.e. bass is essentially omnidirectional to the ear) but I've never been a full subscriber to that. As far as I'm concerned it's simply less directional. Spread the source and it's better. At present, it is better and that's a good point to start from. Makes some of the purchase pain worth it.
  22. Don't know the measurements but at the end of the day I cheated. I took the slant base from one of my other HIIIs, handed it to a cabinet maker and said 'copy this'. He did. Perfectly, although with one minor modification from stock. Instead of veneered MDF, I had him make the base from solid hardwood.
