  1. I've suffered through it on a few occasions (when the GF has commandeered control of the 'motrol, and in an attempt to score some nookie points) and for the most part it makes me hurl. I do like it however when someone who REALLY sucks gets told that they REALLY suck by the British dude. But mostly, I'd rather listen to my gear and stare at a blank TV screen.
  2. I'll drive whatever it takes to avoid a Walmart, so naturally I avoid Sams as well. I typically shop BJs since that's the only other game in town. I love steak, and BJs has great meat. I'll go there once every 4-5 months or so and buy a whole tendreloin or rib eye. The price you end up paying is half what you'd pay in the grocery store, and the meat FAR superior. Along the way I pick up beer, wine, parmasan, socks, tires, etc etc. Sure you have to part with some funds, but far cheaper in the long run than shopping at the grocery store etc. I hate walmart and will not support a corp that trashes American workers the way they do. I know it's a futile gesture, but it makes me feel better. My neighbors just left....time to go blast the Klipsch!
  3. What did you pay? I have made two offers in the last 4 months and both were rebuffed. I really don't need any more speaks at this time and have no where to put a pair, but if the price was right I'd jump. What type of cabs and what kind of shape??
  4. OK, along the same lines as the "How Do You Organize Your Albums" thread...... I'm looking for an inexpensive, wall mount rack/shelves for my CDs. I have several hundred, and I HATE having to squat down to browse. I'm looking for a fairly wide and tall rack which I can screw to the wall so my CDs are in FRONT of me. Any suggestions??
  5. "<<Although im not sure if having sex with pigs will cause an infection of this virus unto the human. Does anyone have any experience with this ?">> Not that I'll admit to.
  6. Thanks Thebes, I've tried very little because it showed up at my place right before I had to leave town for a week. I hope to get home late tomorrow and I'll try plugging it directly into the wall. I also noticed that when I rotate the volume knob excessively that the peace lilly on the floor in front of the right speaker flips this way and that like there's an open window.....and the grills on both speakers pulsate. This set up could wake the dead. Frustrated a bit, but smiling none the less. I'll check the fuses and do some more googling.
  7. I have tried it with the volume down and it makes no difference. As it is pluged into the Switched outlet on the back of the preamp it naturally follows that switch. I suppose I could just leave it plugged in (on) to another outlet and minimize the noise, but I'm not too crazy about leaving electrical stuff on when it;s not in use, and or when I leave my domo. As long as it's not doing damage to the speaks then I can easily live with it. I have had less powerful amps make noises at shut down as well, but with 200 watts this thing really makes a racket. But man does it sound good when in use! I can only imagine what some nice tube gear must sound like. Someday.... Thanks for the input.
  8. The latest in my amp saga..... So the Phase Linear 400 dinosaur shows up last week and is in gorgeous shape. The lights on one of the VU meters are out....bummer. Other than that, it's perfectly quiet (at least to my ears) and makes my CFs sound great. It's got a ton o' thump. I have it's AC cord plugged into the back of my receiver. I am using it for a preamp until can scrape up the ching for a more suitable unit. Here's the rub.....when I shut it down, it makes a fairly loud, rather bizarre noise. I can't tell if it's coming out of one channel or both. I had to run to the airport and won't get home for several days to troubleshoot further. The noise is as follows.... BEEeeeeeeoooowwwwwwwzzziiPPP! How does a neophyte MOron like myownself determine whether or not this is harmful to my speakers? If it's just annoying than I can live with it. But, it's fairly loud and abrupt. Ahhh the perils of used gear! BEOzip out.
  9. I have yet to pick a copy up, but I will follow this thead to see the remarks from yous guys. Rolling Stone gave it a feenom review last month.
  10. I spent last weekend in Mexico City. The pandemic was in it's infancy then, although it seemed to be well known locally as 20-30 percent of the locals were wearing masks. It was only after I sat down that evening and watched CNN that I became aware of the problem. I knew nothing of it prior to my arrival. It's a very sad situation, particularly for those who have lost family members. But not one which really surprises me. SARS impacted my life (economically, not physically) to a great degree and I learned just how small the planet really is. I think that shutting down the border is a joke. Would we consider shutting down the border if the problem had started in Quebec or Toronto? I seriously doubt it. The largest outbreak in the US is in a Queens New York high school. I'm pretty sure they were at 37,000 feet when they crossed the border and are all US citizens. There are already document cases in Europe. Did Mexicans swim the Atlantic? I have heard that it can take 5-10 days for the flu to materialize. In the meantime, I'm sorry to report that my Last Will leaves my 12 Klipsch speakers to my daughter. Cough, hack, sniff.
  11. I believe.....I believe that my tumbler is empty and I'd like another bourbon.
  12. I am looking for a nice, vintage Preamp. Unfortunately since I live in a van down by the river, my means are modest. So, I picked up a used Flame Linear amp. It needs a homie. I see prices all over the map and obviously you get what you pay for. But, can you get a decent, used preamp for just a couple hundred bucks? SAE?? Carver?? NAD?? ADCOM? Phase? These actually go for fairly cheap prices. The marantz, McIntosh, Conrad Johnson etc stuff goes for quite a bit, and this is for their SS products. Tube stuff is very high. It's not that I don't want tube......reading this forum for the last 9 months has me Jonseing bigtime for tube gear. But I can't justify the big price tag at this time. Any opinions welcome. If none, I'll just head back down to the river and smoke a doobie. Matt Foley. .
  13. The prices you are getting for the KLFs are both too high. Keep looking it will be worth the wait. I cannot comment on the others. Go craigslist early and go often. A road trip may be in order but it will be worthwhile. Good luck.
  14. I'm just kiddin on the decibels, although my ears did hurt this year on Jan the first. I got a tad carried away the night before. But I am amazed at how these speakers respond with just a slight increase in volume when it's already fairly loud. The change is dramatic and wonderful. It makes me smile like I got away with something. As far as cranking it, I can't get past about 12:30 to 1300 on the volume knob without my head imploding. Usually a loud setting is about 1030-1100. I'll drone on using the 9100 as a pre for now and start looking for something to replace it with. Hey guys many many thanks for the constructive inputs. I am a neophyte in the realm of hi end stereo and obviously have a lot to learn. Training my ears after 30 years of mediocre CC type stuff is proving to be one hell of a lot of fun.
  15. <<"you will know clipping if it happens the sound will become very distorted, the flame linear was actually aquainted more with pro use (and not an isolated event at all, happened so often that most pro users quit using the phase linear and moved to crown ) , if your speakers dip down below 4 ohms your phase will heat up and low enough drops in ohms will cause the amp to clip">> OK thanks. I have always been under the impression that when the levels get to the point of clipping that you'd be able to hear it. It's pretty much a reflex to lower the volume as soon as it starts to distort, so hopefully I'll be able to recognize it immediately. Hell, hopefully it will never happen. What I don't understand is your second statement; "speakers dip down below 4 ohms". I thought that an OHM was a level of resistance, and that it was a constant depending on the individual speaker......IOW....a 4 ohm speaker is a 4 and an 8 ohm is an 8...... I remember older gear having switches on the back to preselect the OHM of the speaker in use. Your statement implies that this is variable. What am I missing? Sorry for my obtuse confusion! Dude out.
  16. Russ69....Many thanks for the input. I often see nice old Marantz preamps sell on ebay for what seem to be reasonable sums. Would something like this suffice or do I need to open the wallet W-I-D-E. If so, I may have to wait a bit as I am currently living in a van down by the river and have limited means. Any suggestions which would match up with the Phase appreciated. Thanks for your assistance and knowledge.
  17. All....thanks for the info. I was pretty sure of how to hook itup, but just wanted some verification. Joe, How can I recognize clipping? I read a thread here recently which had a sine wave/curve chart and I pretty much became a mouth breather at that time. In just blasting this thing...will clipping be audible and something easily avoided?? I always thought that one could hear it when it started to clip...but having never heard it.....how will I know? Obviously I don't want to harm my speaks while enjoying my Creedence. I read several reviews about Flame Linear, but that really seems to be an isolated occurence. At least I hope so. I plan on putting it on top of my SA9100/Tuner stack so it's heat will not interfere with the preamp and tuner. It will not be enclosed in a case of any sort so the heat sinks ought to have adequate fresh air for cooling. Will that be OK?? Thanks for the info and tutelage. Jeffrey Lebowski
  18. OK...My ignernce is galactic. Please, cut me some slack and lift me from the bilge of idiocy and mediocrity. I have a very nice vintage pioneer SA9100 amp (80ish wpc). I also have a pair of (schweeeet) CF3's. I just bought a Phase Linear 400 series I (200ish wpc) amp. It is my goal to ruin my hearing, soothe my auditory soul and crack all the plaster in my domo. If I alienate my homies (neighbors) than so be it. My query for the educated is as follows; How do I wire this new contraption up? Looks to me as though an RCA goes from the Pioneer "pre-out" to the Phase's inputs and the speaks get connected to the Phase. Correk? If so, why is there a "power in" on the back of the Pioneer? I are confused about this and I don't want to screw it up. Yes, I am a moron, but that is beyond the scope of this thread. Can you help a brother out?? Also, there is a nifty little switch on the back of the Pioneer labled "Normal - (on/off) - Subsonic - Separated. It has a plastic guard which mandates the Normal selection. Whut da hail is that for?? And lastly, why is it against the law to remove the tags from mattresses? Humbly and in stupidity, OM
  19. Just don't get any schmutz on it. Or else you'll have to schvitz it. And that's a lot of rigamorole, and your gear could end up on the fritz.
  20. Pandora and Used CDs on Amazon go together like peas and carrots. Tons of great music, cheap. What's not to like????
  21. <<" Good for you, Lemonman. That's a great price for a decent old piece of equipment. Where else can you get that kind of enjoyment for $25?">> Thailand.
  22. <<" The vinyl seems a little mellower, if that is a word.">> I'm pretty sure on THIS site that 'mellower' is a word. In my yout, I was pretty anal with regard to my albums. I handled them like nitroglycerin, kept them insanely clean, used the disc washer every play, always rotated the sleves 90 degrees etc, etc ,etc. But when I listen to them now, I am supremely bummed when I hear them snap and crackle. I am also annoyed that I have to get up and flip the record over to listen to the other side! I am afraid that I have been successfully seduced by the CD and digital music. Man, what a wuss I have become in my old age. I just wish they were cleaner. But, I have a ton of them and many aren't on disc. I love the artwork and reading the liner notes while I listen. My 17 year old daughter is fascinated by them. I'll pull out an old original recording, say Hank WIlliams "Lonesome Whistle" and then start playing her the covers up through the years. Eventually I'll get to the Little Feat version which just kicks the hell out of all of them so she can see how the music has changed and morphed into what we hear today. So, I still enjoy having them around. It's fun to listen to something great you had completely forgotten about. I have an old Denon TT, nothing special and I don't plan on replacing it unless I find an absolute steal on a classic. I also admit that I still enjoy the look of my old vintage stuff. I found a matching tuner for my amp just so I could have a stack of matching components! I guess that makes me a geek. Seeing all those lights and the TT sitting there just makes me want to blow the grills off my Klipsch. I wish I still had my old Teac Reel to Reel!
  23. Holy crap! I have no idea what the majority of that stuff is, other than it's unbelievably expensive audio gear. I'm so glad that my inexpensive, lousy gear makes me smile. My $65 vintage sansui sounds freakin awesome through my Fortes. I never want to visit any of your homes for fear that I will instantly hate my stuff and go insane replacing it. In fact, my stuff is such absolute rubbish that I get away with using the AC current coming out of the wall to power it. Man, I am such a loser! Well, maybe I could listen to systems below 10 grand. Are there any?
  24. "white by birth, trash by choice" That is hilarious, do you mind if I borry it? I promise that I will acknowledge it's genesis in your general direction.
