  1. The manual reads like this, and I don't think this will help much. Input sensitivity for THX reference level is 2 V rms for the analog inputs. I wish McIntosh would offer more features on their AV/processors. The Parasound stuff is also some what limited, but you can program front effect channels with the C1 and C2 , like with your Yamaha. I used my Yamaha as a pre-pro for quite a while.
  2. Now this is interesting. Over the years I tried to discribe the sonic changes I heard everytime I modified my LaScalas and Klipschorns. I did so by using a lot of the same adjectives that you guys are using to discribe what you heard when listening to speakers A & B. Now I know that you don't have a clue as to what my mods sound like. You hear and like different things, and the same adjective means one thing to one person and the opposite of that meaning to another person. I really enjoyed reading your impressions of this speaker comparison, and how your opinions varied. It really gives me an idea as to what sound you like without even hearing the speakers that you listened to. Part of this is to to the fact that I know what speakers you own and how you discribed their sound in the past. Too bad speaker A & B wern't at least level matched. Louder is almost always perceived as sounding better. I may have to get off of my butt and make the Klipsch trip next time.
  3. Craig, Thanks for explaining the situation in more detail. Then we don't know how well the subs keep up with LaScalas and Klipschorns yet.
  4. 120 db with the LaScalas. Were you using the subs when you measured the 120db? If the subs wern't bottoming out at that level and were still blending in well with the LaScalas, then they might be able to keep up with LaScalas and Klipschorns. J.4knee, thanks for the input. You had to bring up that garage door thing.
  5. Do as Michael said. Auto body filler is about the easiest thing to use under veneer, foil, and formica. No waiting for it to dry and it sands faster and smoother then the wood type fillers. This method is a trick of the trade the cabinet business. Remember, the bondo type body filler is going under the veneer,it won't be seen.
  6. In that case,I'll add a little more. I got into this game with a Yamaha RX-V2092 5.1 Dolby Digital receiver with two extra channels for front effect speakers and a pair of LaScalas. Two or three years went by and I spent all my time trying different speakers for the center, surounds, and front effect channels. I liked how that receiver sounded with Klipsch. Then out came DTS, DVD-Audio, SACD so I needed a new receiver to support the new formats. Trere was no question about it, I wanted another Yamaha so I bought the RX-V3000. Remember that I like the Yamaha sound, and wanted to continue to have Front Effect channels. The speakers were now Klipschorns and more LaScalas all around. Two or three more years slipped by and I spent that time building and modifying speakers and networks with the aid of a few Forum members. I finally make the Klipschorn be all that it can be, to my taste anyway, so I moved to the amps. I now used the RX-V3000 as a processor to seperate power amps. I finally ended up with 10 channels powered my Mcintosh amps. Big improvement over the Yamaha amps. They sound really nice powering the modified Klipschorns. Now PLIIx is out and I want to see what a seperate processor will do to improve the sound. I looked at the Anthem AVM-30,and the Parasound Halo C-1 & C-2 the hardest out of about 6 others. While I was making up my mind on which processor to buy I decided to buy an Outlaw 950 to hold me over. It had better surround steering then the Yamaha. The center channel is much better then the Yamaha. Bass is slightly weaker then the Yamaha. The Yamaha didn't have as much air, but it had a slightly warmer sound. The 950 should serve most people well, and like I said, the 990 is supposed to sound better then the 950. I sent it back before the 30 days were up. I'm looking for, or want a different sound. I went with the Parasound Halo C-1. Why? Remember those front effect channels that I was talking about? The Parasound has them, and I'm told that it's a notch above the AVM-30 in sound quality. Time will tell, it's on order.
  7. Look on the AVS forum under amps receivers and processors. There are a few discussions about the 990. I've read that it sounds better then the 950, but not as good as the big boys. For the money you can't beat it. That's what Outlaw is all about, the biggest bang for the buck.
  8. I use the Altec 290-16K and L midrange drivers and the Altec 311-90 horns with my Klipschorn bottoms and JBL 2404-H tweeters. These are 300Hz drivers and horns, more suited for use with Klipschorns then the 500 Hz. stuff. The good thing about this combination is that there is a special network already designed for this combination. You can have John Warren build them for you. The other good thing is that this mod is much nicer sounding then the 511 mod. The bad thing is that the drivers and horns are hard to find and the horns go for about $900.00 a pair.
  9. Seadog, Keep your son involved in these projects of yours. Kids have great ears and can be a big help if you A/B mods and changes. Your son will also tell you the truth about what he hears. He won't tell you what he thinks you want to hear. My kids learned a lot and had a little fun doing so.

Are you coming over to help me set it up? ---------------- Congrats!! I guess we finally convinced you, eh? Sure, I can offer some assistance, although I'm not sure if you live in LA. I won't count my chickens before they're hatched, but my guess is you'll be mighty pleased with it's sonic performance. ---------------- I was kidding about coming over. I know that you live in California, and I'm in Florida. There is a chance that you will see me asking questions on the HTGuide forum. If so, I'll expect to hear from you . I do use a PS Audio 4.7 Power Director. I'm just telling you this since you seem to like some PS Audio stuff. I have it set up to turn on the equipment in a time delayed sequence.
  11. ---------------- Parasound HALO C1 and A51. Q I hope you got your C1 from our forum buddy... Regards, Mike I almost did, but I ordered it from a local dealer instead. This way if I need any help with furture updates, or set up issues I'll have someone near by.
  12. I have to agree with Frzinvt. I have a McIntosh multi channel amp and McIntosh two channel amps. The two channel amps do a much better job.
  13. Nicholti, I ordered a C-1 yesterday, because of you guys on the Home Theater Guide. Now I'll see if it sounds as good as everyone says it does. I also bought it because it is the only processor out there that has two channels that I can program to use for my front effect speakers. Are you coming over to help me set it up?
  14. The AL-3 is a network worth keeping. I did an A/B with them and the ALK for some people a couple of years ago. The opinion was that the AL-3 wasn't worth changing. If you have the AL or AL-2 then I would change to the ALK, or the AA that John Warren builds. I've had both. I sold the ALK's and still have a pair of J.W's AA.
  15. You received good advice as usual. Birch looks a little like maple and cherry. So those types of stains will look best on birch. Cherry is really a light colored wood with a mixture of light and dark colors. Most people don't know what cherry really looks like because it is always stained a dark color. As said above, use a minwax wood conditioners first or the stain will come out blotchy and dull. The stain color that you picked is a good choice. Keep the stain color light. You can also use golden oak, or a light cherry stain. Have fun in the dog house
  16. I've heard good things about Bryston, but not Krell. On other forums Krell is said to be too bright and harsh with the Klipsch Heritage speakers.
  17. I'm partial to McIntosh, but then arn't we all partial to our own gear? I have the MC206 six channel power amp, but I also have some MC202 two channel power amps in my system. The two channel amps are a big improvement over the multi channel amps. I will probably be selling the MC206 one of these days. I first need to buy more McIntosh two channel amps.
  18. I like the newer McIntosh SS amps. I need a min. of 200 watts per channel in my room for the low bass in some CD's and movies. I can bury the needles with those explosions. Thank God for the power guard circuit (anti clipping).
  19. They were just revamped. Just promote the darn things. Once they are in the main stream again offer them with with better midrange drivers, horns and tweeters as an option.
  20. I prefer the LaScala over the Belle. The Belle was another compromise in sound to make a better looking speaker. The LaScala is a better match with the Klipschorn if your looking for a center channel.
  21. If you are able to make the switch, do it. The AK-3 Klipschorn is better sounding and to me the B-style is much better looking then the C. If you keep yours, get rid of the woofer mounting board. That alone makes an improvement. You can also turn yours into the B-style with a little work.
  22. What kind of percentage could you expect from a sale? You would need something for bringing some nut into your home and wasting your time. If you had a store, it would be one thing. Do you really want strangers to come to your home? Why do you have a need to show off your stuff? Can't you just be satisfied with it?
  23. As said above, you may need to pry them up and off. There is nothing elce holding them down.

As much as I like smooth sound I have got to have bottom end along with it. Gary, if you ever get the chance to listen to the 19s I think you would be pleasently plesaed with them. I have never heard the model 17 but the specs. are the same. Horns however are different. ---------------- That is why I use the Altec midrange with the Klipschorn bass horn. They make a nice combo.
