  1. I think that the Dynaco st-70 is not that good and does'nt have real LF+HF extention just nice midrange that is lacking real depth.I guess I'll prefer the Mac.
  2. Rune, Nice to hear that you like them.I'm never going to replace my type A with anything else. Regards Guy
  3. I have once left my precious Marantz 8B power amp on,and had left for an hour. When I came back it was toasted and burned the output transformer and few other parts. I recommend not to leave vintage tube amps unattended.Mine became worthless and I could never enjoy it again. Tubes have heaters and reach their optimal operation in less than an hour.Transistors don't have heaters and reach their optimal operation in 3 days.
  4. Mike, There's a guy in Audioweb that is looking for a AES PH1.
  5. dblue, I would go for a used turntable.A Rega planner 3 with rb300 tonearm or a Thorens td160 or td150. The Thorens tt's can be found quite cheap and they have excellent quality, are very reliable and sound superb. The only thing that they might need is a new belt. Their sound is much better than anything else costing less than 750$.
  6. For that price, his grandsons will probably inherit them.
  7. C&S, The made in germany with the faded <> mark are not real Telefunkens. They were manufactured in the EI factory in Yugoslavia in the 80's and some were manufactured by Siemens. The fake telefunkens also have better quality logos printed on the tubes that don't wear and fade like the original ones. I can describe the sound of the ribbed plates as more accurate (hifi)than the flat plates but with less midrange magic. The bass is still a little boomy.
  8. I owned an original Austin Cooper S and a 1967 Pegeot 404 cabriolet.My father own a real nice 1971 3.5 litre Mercedes-Benz 280se low grill coupe.
  9. Q-man, I envy your woodworking/technical skills. Which of the speakers do you like best?the LaScalas,University Classic or Imperial? Guy
  10. Jim, I will be selling my ALK crossovers soon. You can email me if you might be interested in them.\ Regards, Guy
  11. When buyng tlefunken tubes, always look for the diamond <> mark on the bottom.Only real teles has got them and apparently there were many telefunken fakes with flat plates and telefunken logos(most were manufactured by tesla during the 70's)but didn't have the diamond mark and didn't sound as good.
  12. Ed, If you do have more than one spare pair of SA-HF,or if Chris does'nt need them,I think that I will be interested in a pair.It would be interesting to compare them to the k55v. Thanks
  13. Well,I live in a nice city near the beach,5 miles north of Tel-Aviv.It is unbelievable that 50 miles away, there are fighting. We are thinking twice before going into crowded places(because of suicide bombers),but we do hang out and go to the beach and restaurants(each place has a guard in the entrance). This is a new routine and we got used to it and hope that it won't last much longer and we'll have peace eventually. In the mean time I enjoy lsteninig to my system a tweaking it a bit. I will take your word on the SET's since we share similar opinions about equipment and will try to have a listen to a lower power SET amp but the choice is very small around here.
  14. Mobile, I wish that you could come and listen to my Marantz model 2's(I can bring a pair of Unison Research 845 amps for comparison). I think that are equally good or even better than most single ended amps out there.
  15. Hello everyone, Did you ever hear about Pareto's law(or 80/20law)? Pareto experimented and came to a conclusion that in order to get 80% of the performance you need to to spend 20% of an amount, and in order to get that extra desireable 20%,you'll need to expend another 80%(4 times as much). That is correct for almost everything in life and it is likewise so in audio. Craig, I guess that you have spent the first 20% in a wise way but in order to get a better result you will probably need to spend nearly 4 times more.If you are happy with your sound-you can stop here and have a bigger saving account and if not(like most of us),the improvement will be very small but they'll cost a fortune.
  16. Q-man, Was the cutting point of the woofer(500hz)is chosen because the 805 is a 500hz horn?can the 288 go lower than that? I will experiment with the 311-90 and it is a 300hz horn. What is the mid/tweeter frequency cutoff point? Thanks
  17. The tonearm on this turntable is a rebranded Lustre tonearm.Altough it is nice is not as good as Rega's own RB250. The Lustre tonearm(R200) was found on early P2's so this unit is quite vintage.
  18. Mike, Don't hesitate to buy good tested mullard/amperex GZ-34/5AR4 they can last a life time.Look at the getter and if it is full and shiney, they are probably in a good condition. I have a used pair that are working in my father's office system for 9 hours a day and he's been using them for more than four years now.
  19. Mike, I seem to agree with Allan about the cv4004 box plate ecc83's.I have replaced the telefunken flat plate ecc83's input tube in my Marantz model 2 with these and prefer them to the telefunkens.I did the same in my VTL Ultimate preamp. The telefunken has excellent midrange but the bass is too uncontrolled. The mullard has tighter bass and better definition and is cheaper too.
  20. Q-man, The guy with the same sutup is Mark F and he is probably been enjoying his system since he have'nt visited the forum for a while. Does the 288's go down to 400hz?
  21. Q-man, Can you describe the difference in sound/caracter between the Altec 288/805 and Klipsch k55/400? I find the k55v quite satisfactory and thinking of mating it to the Altec 311-90 with an adapter.Did anyone ever tried that? Thanks
  22. Rune, I have few pairs of 311-90,a pair of 311-60 and 803b multicell. I couldn't find a decent driver like the 288 here and experimented with the 290E which was normally used for paging and has more limited frequency than the K55v. I did'nt feel that it was an improvement and I am about to try the K55v with the 311-90 in the near future. Guy
  23. Nice pictures, jazman. 2 channel is the only way to go.A lot of people think that the common, tiny center channel loudspeaker can create a bigger soundstage.I guess that they do not listen to a balanced, simple and nice system like yours and they are not calculating all the distortion between channels inside the H/T processor chips, extra cables, amps etc.A good 2 channel system can sound as good as almost any of the very expensive H/T systems most of the time.
  24. Trader, The original type A is indeed a true 1st order crossover.
