  1. Throw some Montovani on the turn table and you've got chick melting ambiance.[H] Uhmm...better change that to Peter Cetera .... I'm showing my age[:S]
  2. I was trying to get an impression of the corner to reproduce, but it fell through. I started to work on a Google Sketch rendering to take to a machine shop. I had talked to them informally and had the impression that they could be reproduced at a price that would be affordable and resellable. They didn't flinch at the price per that I suggested, so I was hopeful. Life just caught up and I've been busy at other ventures. Someday, someone will put it all together.
  3. Playing "keep up with the Jones' " can be dangerous[] I think you were looking at the Quintets if I got to the right page you were referencing. I have them in my kitchen/family room and with a sub-woofer (absolutely get one), I'm pretty happy with them in that setting (I'm lucky to have a dedicated HT also). The back of the room (I assume the kitchen) is not as critical as the front. You also do not have a dedicated theater, so concede that it won't meet your brother's criteria. Many times the breakup of the waves in the rear is welcome. Just go with it. Find a receiver/amp, disk player first is my recommendation. Buy quality, but last year's model and save a bundle. If a TV is in that budget then I really recommend finding the Quintets on ebay used. I got mine there and they were less than 1/2 retail. For a family room setting, I think $1500 will still get you a room that you will enjoy. The Quintets will always re-sale, so you can re-engage the neighbor arms race at a convenient time.
  4. I'm just sorta meandering through this, then dtel mentions SA and I had to think what I'd do if they shut down. Now I won't be able to sleep for a week. [^o)]
  5. Very nice. Have fun with a great tool.
  6. That's how it starts. Pretty soon you'll have those cute little cubes in your living room instead of those big ugly speakers Too funny. That's how I ended up with Quintet IIIs upstairs.[8-)] Fortunately the Lascalas live downstairs in the HT now.[]
  7. My room is a little wider than yours. Some pics can be seen at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1259060 I built the center Lascala and since you do wood work you could do the same. My rears are Academys. One heritage and one built from components I picked up over several months of patient looking and bidding/buying. bob
  8. I used to jump rope to Hollywood Nights by Bob Seger. Required a good cool down before ramping up again.
  9. You can find lit signs on ebay made in China. Not sure if they're authorized. They take about 3 weeks to recieve.
  10. I actually regretted having to bid early, but I'm generally commutting about the time the three ended. As it turned out I was just getting home as it ended and I doubt if my bid would have been much different. I didn't think of screwing a forum member out of a decent price, so you have a good point there. It's just the nature of ebay. Good luck on your project. I'm sure you'll keep us posted. bob
  11. It would have been good to somehow communicate and save one of us some money[H] I posted my maximum bid and I guess you slowly walked your way up. I've got a pair of Lascala tops that I want to build bottoms for, but from what you're saying the 44s may not be the best solution. Thanks for the reply. bob
  12. Where are these used and are they close to K-43s? I lost out on some 43s as I just didn't want to break the bank bidding on them. Anyone on this forum win them?
  13. Great tip. I've used the thin double stick tape in the past with good results. Your results look excellent.
  14. Uhmm...... I let the staff go. Gotta mow my own lawn, wash my own car. Have to actually drive myself to work. Buy the Johnny Walker Black instead of Blue. Just trying to make ends meet. Yup, No longer rich according to the Administrations standards. []
  15. I run my quartets that i have in my living room on an older sony. nothing special at all except that it does have the 5.1 surround. you will need a sub as the previous poster advised. for the size, i'm quite satisfied with them for everyday tv and was using them for movies until i got my ht set up
  16. Are you sure you didn't have a dbx recording without using a dbx decoder???[]
  17. ME!!!. Still use my Technics TT and just re-acquired a DBX pre-amp for the dozen or so DBX recorded albums I have. Also, I'm in the finishing stages of my HT and built 3 new shelves to house my records. Most had been in storage for 12 or more years. What's old is new again.
  18. OMG!!![Y] Makes my Steel City look like a toy and I've got a 53" extension. [:'(] It's gotta make cutting large sheets very easy. [H]

    War Movies

Anybody remember the short lived series "Space: Above and Beyond". Maybe it was mentioned. It was real graphic in the depiction of battlefield death and dying. I remember just having been married and both my new wife and her mother were appalled by how painful it was to watch. Pretty hard stuff for TV.

    War Movies

Based on the OP quote, there are many movies suggested here that don't make that grade.

    War Movies

Really??? I'd be interested in your criteria. I think that the character development was excellent, the detailed look at particular situations such as the artillary barrage, and the unique film style of the action scenes all made for an excellent series. I would argue that some of the 'war movies' mentioned are borderline as far as 'war' goes. But scifi action is very engaging and I guess does meet some minimum criteria. The OP inclusion of The Postman comes to mind. This is more a post apocalyptic movie. Spy movies are also somewhat borderline in my opinion. YMMV. bob
  22. I have the German mm drawing. All you needed was to ask:)
  23. Might as well use that as buy new. Any 14 to 16 guage wire will work fine. There's nothing magical to the brand.
