  1. i am seriously thinking about getting a projector for my ht. can anyone suggest how to go about finding the right one. has anyone ever used one in a home environment. how is the picture quality. at school we got the big NEC projectors (they are hanging from the ceilings of every classroom so i can't see the mdel number) and they seem to do great job. but i'm pretty sure those would be too expensive. i've looked at some specs from companies like sony, viewsonic, NEC, 3M, that seem to be in my price range. oh, if i did buy one i was going to spend around 4K canadian, maybe up to 5k. how are projectors at this price range. the size of the screen would not be over 70 inches, if that makes any difference and it would only be used to watch dvd's so it would also be dark in the room. i was just wondering if it would be worth it. i kinda understand how to read the specs but i have never seen a projector at work other than in a movie theater.
  2. i have dipole surrounds and have them about a foot behind the listenning position about one or two feet above me. i also have a rear center which is placed below the listening position. they work really well together, the dipoles really create a sound envellope and do not stick out at all. meaning you never get the need to turn around even though they produce alot of sound.
  3. man, i can't wait for this thing to be release. and have any of you seen the new trailor for the two towers. unbelievable. not to get my hopes up but it looks like it's going to be better than the first movie. i'm currently reading the fellowship book. and man is it different. i'm almost done with it, and all in all i liked the movie better.
  4. haven't seen it but if you want to see a scary movie i would strongly recommend the ring.
  5. i had this problem when using the ati dvd player but then i started using the interactual dvd player and the problem was gone. i think it was because the graphics card's drivers weren't working probably, which made the hardware decoding rough. try using a different program. the interactual one is free. if you still have a problem i think updating you graphics card drivers might work also. the other thing is if you don't enough system resources available to play smoothly. but other recommendations already made should help with that.
  6. saw this movie last week, and it is one of the scariest movies i have seen after the age of ten (it was so easy to get scared back then). right in the first five minutes it has you in the edge of your seat. a few morons in the front row started laughing at the beginning, which is always annoying when people laugh at the scary parts, but the movie quickly shut them up. the little boy has these weird eyes, as if he doesn't have retinas. very dark eyes, gives the movie some extra weirdness. it's also a loud movie, which doesn't let divert your attention during the scary parts. this is a must see for anyone who wants to get a good scare.
  7. wel there is dd ex and dts es which is 6.1 discrete. also if you have 6.1 or 7.1 as i do, your receiver usually does a pretty good job at making that extra channel. i have yamaha rxv1200 which is a 6.1 receiver and whenver watching a dvd i always make it matrix that extra channel. after almost four months of testing i can say that with this receiver it is definetely better with the sixth channel on rather than off. and on top is is pretty discrete. my recieve does not have the dd ex symbol on it but when i play the thx optimizer thing that come with thx certified movies, the program recognizes the rear center channel and that sound only comes out of the rear center channel. also anyboy who has a yamaha receiver ( i'm on my second one) loves the 5 or 6 channel stereo for music and putting a rear center makes it sound better. i just wanted to say that even if most dvd only have 5.1 sound tracks there are many reasons to get a 6.1 of 7.1 setup.
  8. i bought this movie on tuesday and have seen a couple of times already. the audio quality is great and the picture is also amazing, although its not monsters inc type quality since its not computer animated but looks like a cartoon. this was one of my favorite movies when it first came out even if i was in my early teens back then, i think. obviously the best part of the movie is the music. they've put in some good effects.
  9. i actually rented that movie last week and you just reminded me that its already late about two days. i watched it after work when i was really tired. i raaly keeps your mind occupied. trying to remember what exactly happened before to understand the significance of what is going on right now. while i was watching i kept real close attention at every detail so that i wouldn't miss anyhting. unfortunetely i was really tired and fell asleep. i missed about ten minutes of the movie and when i woke up i was pissed cause i thought there was no way i would be able to get the rest of the movie. but at the end everything unravels and everything makes sence even if you really weren't paying attention to all the details in the middle of the movie. me falling asleep doesn't reflect negatively on a movie. working thirteen hour shifts gets the best of you at whatever volume you're watching a movie. this movie is by no means boring in my opinion, and an excellent rental. on another note i bought the new forty licks rolling stones greatest hits cd this week and the old stuff (pre 1970) is some of the worst audio recording i have ever heard. some of the instruments sound weird making weird reverberations at some points ( i don't know if that makes any sence ), and the vocals are not loud enough, they always seem to be in the backround.
  10. i saw red dragon last night and i regret it. don't get me wrong, it was great and all but i think i would have enjoyed it more at home. the greatest thing about the movie was that it had two psychos in it. hannibal was his usual frightening yet likeable self, while the other guy was very scary and as the movie goes on i couldn't believe how psycho he really was. actually i think i will enjoy it more the second time, when i buy it on dvd. its not a big screen movie. its a stay at home, close the lights, and let yourself be taken in their world kind of movie. i can't remember silence of the lambs. actually i am not even sure if i ever really ever saw it, but i think it (RED DRAGON) was better than hannibal.
  11. are the factory refurbished models available on this site avaible for people in Cadada. i already have 4.1s but asking for a friend of mind who wouldn't want to pay regular price.
  12. i have only my front speakers to small but not the rear ones. i find it better that way. my sub is in the corner surrounded on three sides so bass is not nondirectionnal like it should be. are you telling me that i really do not need the x-20 in my current setup? actually i will try setting the sub out control to lfe and mains. couldn't i keep the x20 just as a remote control of sorts cause the same knobs on the sub are found on the box? or does it in some way do harm?
  13. boa, i read your thread in the other section but i think that is a little to complicated for me. actually i have a pw2200 and since in your other post you mentionned you have an x30 i should add that i have the x20. i bought the x20 for two reasons: one is to simply not have to go behind the sub to change the controls (to get access to those knobs i have stand on my sub then get on my knees on the sub and lean forward to stick my head between the back of the sub and the wall) and second is since it has two sub outs in the future i could very easily add a second sub without having to use the speaker inputs and outputs with my mains. also the salesman told me that it somehow makes the sub sound better but i seriously doubt that. anyways right now i use the sub pre out on my yamaha rxv1200 to connect to the lfe input of the x20 and then run the lfe output to my sub. i keep playing with controls but seems like a hopeless cause because it seems like different material requires different settings. some material has too much base so i like to turn it down and others have too much so i turn it up. also other material just has bad base and i try to make it sound better by adjusting the cut off frequency and the phase. so back to my original question, should i, on the x 20 put the cut off frequency and the maximum of 150 hz or something lower. any advice about the phase alignment would also be welcome. (or completely changing my current setup, i'd be willing to try anything if it means improving things)
  14. wait a minute, if one is using a sub/lfe out of his reciever then he shouldn't use the cut off frequency on the sub?
  15. one thing i have to say is that disney always puts great soundtracks on all their dvds. usually they make them thx certified and almost always add a dts sountrack. i own "remember the titans" and although there isn't much to work with, i must say that it has a great soundtrack. i'm probably going to buy beauty and the beast on dvd and i'm sure that's going to be great also. i loved that movie when it came out, sure it's my favorite animated movie.
  16. i have one but i live in montreal, and am not selling it. nope that thing is here to stay. are you looking for one for your ht, or what?
  17. i don't get how an equalizer will solve my problem? and where would the duct tape go. they're sliding windows (left to right and vie versa). i think it sound like the windows thenselves are making the noise and vibrate. i'm actually going right now to look at what exactly is making the sound.
  18. i own a paradigm pw2200 which i have placed on the right side of my right main speaker, and is stuck in the corner of the room. a wall is directly behind it where the top half of the wall is a window. also on the far right of the same wall the is a door. my problem is that at certain times the window starts to shake which makes an annoying sound, and at others the door start to shake. the problem is that it doesn't seem to take much to shake any of these, although they never shake at the same time but i believe at different frequencies. the door was pretty to fix by putting rubber pads on the corners but the windows are sliding windows and i don't see how i could stop them from shaking without preventing them form opening. any advice?
  19. i rented this one yesterday and i must say it has some of the strongest bass i've heard. the sound effects are pretty awesome too. i love that thx beginning with the cows. its the first time i heard it at home (usually only get it in theaters). i still can't get over the bass though, especially when the giant monster crosses the street. also in some instances there are great thumps that you feel hitting your chest like a sledgehammer. this is a must buy, especially if i have friends over that are not into the action packed movies which make up 99% of my dvd collection.
  20. well, i took the plunge this weel and bought the pw2200 on monday. my dealer did not carry the sub in store so they gotta order it from the company. they said it could take up to two weeks. i'm already trying to figure out where to put this thing and how i can shorten the breakin period for this sub. i'm thinking about maybe using the lfe test thing on my yamaha rxv1200 receiver, it can procuce a tone down to 33hz. maybe if i leave that on for a couple of hours, that should do the trick? or do i need to play a lot bassy music so that the sub gets a taste of more frequecies. How did you guys break in your subs? i read that some people it takes up to a month to properly break this thing in!!! anyways if you guys have any suggestions on how you set up a sub for the best results they will be greatly appreciated.
  21. i think i wrote that post in a moment of pure stingyness where i was only thinking of the possible $$$ i would be saving, but after really thinking about it there is no way that i am going to settle for a pdr or even a ksw. Especially after all the great things you guys saud in the other post about the pw2200 i would be stupid to settle for anything else Anyways, thanks for putting me in my place.
  22. unbelievable, first cats climbing into subwoofer ports, now this. how you guys can live with these animals is beyond me, but if the sub doesn't sound any different then it doesn't really matter. if you ask me it's surprising you don't hear a difference. if it doesn't seem broke than don't fix it. this whole cat thing is becoming hilarious.
  23. i recently started another thread asking for the cheapest acceptable sub, and the best solutions were either a pw2200 or a ksw12. i was sort of convinced about getting the pw2200 except now i realize that i do not have the biggest of ht systems and that maybe that 250w rms is a little too much for my setup. the ksw12 would obviously be a better fit for this reason as many people did suggest that sub, but i was wondering maybe going with another paradigm sub the pdr12. its the biggest of the pdr series without going into the hated ps series. How does this sub compare to the ksw12? i think i should include that my main speakers are paradigm mini monitors and my center is the cc370. i think that these speakers would get KO'ed by the pw2200. Also i like the fact that the pdr is front firing cause i don't think the downfiring ksw will shale the cement under my basement floor. i would rather get horizontal firepower rather than vertical.
  24. i recently upgraded my main speakers and noticed how i now enjoyed listening to music more with the center and surrounds off. i thought this was due to the fact that my centre was of less quality than my mains. i went to the store i bought my mains from and the salesman told me that in his opinion music will always sound better with only two speakers because cds are intended to be listened to from only two speakers (i don't mean multi channel cds/dvds of course). Does this make any sense to you guys? although he also pointed out that if i put my amp to 5 channel stereo mode it should sound just as good.
  25. can you give approximate canadian prices of what the ksw 12 would cost and how much the pw2200 would cost here in montreal, if i bought them new, of course.
