  1. "made in america" used to mean something 100 years ago. I've seen plenty of shitty products made in america with a hefty price tag attached to them. lighten up francis..
  2. bottom of the first post in this thread. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1329971
  3. it's also cool to see the reaction when I tell people that I've only met Carl once before, and that he lives 6 hours away. The concept that he'd do this for me and that I'd trust him enough with my investment boggles their minds. or that Don would invite me over for a couple hours to enjoy his system as I play sherpa with speakers that he picked up for Carl. a testament, in my opinion, to the type of community atmosphere klipsch and this forum try to foster.
  4. ha, it's been just as much fun talking this project up on facebook and watching the jealous husbands fawn over the idea of a 5ft sub, while their wives scoff with sour faces. i'll be coming home saturday night, calibrating and tweaking sunday morning, and premiering Tron: Legacy for some new friends on sunday evening. In a few weeks I'll be painting the sub itself. Since it's inside, i think i'm going with a bedliner product from rustoleum - not a favorite for actual outside truck solutions, but it has a very even and fine texture to it that will integrate well into a house without screaming "industrial". Final results, as well as pictures of it integrated into the final home will of course be posted.
  5. i really don't, which can be said for so many life events i'm embarking upon right now.
  6. [Y] i'm hoping to get somewhere close to this...
  7. I believe the tune of the horn is 20Hz. It will go lower, but distortion starts to really go up. The amp that Michael is going to use has a selectable high pass filter that cam be set to 20Hz. As with any sub, in room extension is better than ground plane. I'll bet he gets solid performance in room to 17 or 18 Hz. even if i don't, it will be far better than what my RF-5's put out on their own.
  8. this box was built and modeled around a specific driver that had very distinct power, xmax, and excursion limits and so it was tuned to 20hz to maintain loud but safe operation. that driver is NLA, however the driver I am using is a happy accident in that it seems to work just as well in the enclosure, with very similar characteristics. Solid output down to 20hz is all i need, so this particular build and driver fit my vision and budget. obviously, if you need 15hz or lower, there are different or better builds to suit that i was originally contemplating a SVS pc-13 ultra in order to get that subsonic performance down to 16hz or so. For a quarter of the cost and a slightly larger footprint i'm getting the 'meat' of my LFE channel and missing out on only a bit without having to wait a year or more to scrape together an SVS budget (as stated previously, i have "new" old house renovations, new baby coming in march, and so on).
  9. have fun.. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1329971
  10. ah, yes, that is indeed. i'd still like someone local to come out and help me measure room nulls and such to help me figure out my EQ needs.
  11. Rudy - I'm hoping to have a dfw horn heads at my place once life settles down, and would love it if someone with the tools and knowledge could do exactly this and help me tweak to my room.
  12. OK .. Wenches & Chambermaids.. Try sending an email to the incorrect addess and see if it goes through or bounces back. If the address isn't associated with a paypal account, paypal sends an email which basically says "hey, someone sent you money ..go here to setup an account and get it". If the e-mail address doesn't actually exist, then you're good to go and the funds transfer should never take place. Otherwise, you should be able to file a claim with paypal indicating that a typo/error took place and that the money should be refunded.
  13. oh i hope you're not talking to me. while that is MY sub, i'm a crappy carpenter and have no clue what goes into designing a subwoofer - so I outsourced it. if you're in the mood to drink from the fire hydrant of knowledge, go here and dig in: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=155
  14. all of this positive attention makes me that much happier to be the recipient.
  15. OK, you have made a statement that seems like pocket screwing is a lesser method; so explain if you would please.
  16. please make sure you sign and date the sub, somewhere inside the driver compartment (since I won't be painting in there).
  17. i believe that's what i would be using. A buddy of mine recently found a DIY spray in liner around that same price and has been using it with great results. I plan to do my Ranger bed and would buy enough to do the sub as well.
  18. you're probably right and it would BECOME my coffin if Morgan found out how much was spent to give it that finish.
  19. mdf takes paint very well. i'm contemplating a bed-liner type of coating, or possibly painting it to match my black wainscoting. I've even considered contacting an acquaintance of mine who does body work to see if he can help create a piano finish. the sub will be used in raw form until i can spend some time with it in its space and make up my mind. with all of the work carl is putting into the construction and finish details, i don't want to just haphazardly slap some paint on it. :/
  20. ha, if only you guys could see the 14 page PM thread covering this project and its evolution. Carl has been great to work with and is making this piece of my system possible far sooner and in far better shape than I could have. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go down to Beaumont (from Dallas) and listen to all the gear he's added since I stole his RF-5's. The sub will still be available for auditions after the 18th, you will just have to travel up to the DFW area.
  21. that too. he's also rounding all the edges for me, which is just a little bit easier in mdf. for what it's worth - there are a whole lot of OEM sub makers that use mdf and charge a ton of money to do so.
  22. the mdf isn't necessary. it was carl's preferred material over plywood and i figured the extra weight would just give some piece of mind against tipping and such. most, if not all, of these builds that i've seen on AVS are using plywood.
