  1. i'm running RF-5's and an RC-7, about 20+ feet, on 8 twisted strands (4 for each +/-) of 24AWG, or 18AWG per post. I hear nothing but blissful dynamics at all and nothing is melting downor imploding. are you noticing any issues or poor sound? If not, i can't imagine any scenario where changing the wires in your setup is justified.
  2. i grew up in the 80's with one of these and now just do the microwave thing with some freshly melted butter to pour over top..
  3. Kid: "yes, please, take those old pieces of crap ..hmmm, price? Well, I need enough to cover Modern Warfare 3 - how about $65?"
  4. i'm aware of the kits and their actual usage - they are not critical to the success of the speaker installation. They are only used during new construction so that the guys hanging drywall know where to cut out holes for the speakers that will be eventually installed. the architectural speakers come in the box as a single unit. you cut the hole in your existing wall, run wire, connect to speaker terminals, insert entire unit into the hole, and then tigthen the 4 screws in each corner that pivot and tighten the rubber feet which sandwich the drywall between frame and feet.
  5. huh? no you don't.. did your speakers not come with the grille frame assembly (usually white and surrounding the speaker) which is inserted into the cutout hole with feet for tightening against the drywall via screws?
  6. came across this little item today while researching some sub details. Might prove useful for you as well.. http://www.amazon.com/Ebtech-Hum-Voltage-Filter/dp/B0002E4YI8
  7. ah, was giving you a hard time because it said "last updated on 4/8/11" at the bottom.
  8. *starts picking at RF-5 veneers to look for any weak spots*
  9. Sub - i followed your sig link and your website has been under construction for 8 months. when you going to start bubbling up all this A/V excitement into website content?
  10. i'd suggest sitting on your cash and start researching what options you think you want - then track down a couple of members that will let you audtion those models for an hour or two. THEN start looking for the speaker deals on which you've got your heart set on.
  11. i honestly dont remember what the re-release sold for per pair. You'd probably be safe offering $1000/pari and adapting to his reactions from there..
  12. I'm assuming you like them, everything I keep reading is about how great they are and supposedly better than the newer reference lines... what are your personal feelings about them? i really do .. they lack the harshness of rf-7's and, to me, are more musical. I've been running them as full range with an rc-7 and no sub for the last year and the walls still rattle - so they put out some sound waves. now, they don't generate those low 20hz frequencies (which is why i'm in the middle of acquiring a sub), but their size to performance ratio is phenominal and they really are just a great all-around speaker.
  13. I bought a mint pair with boxes for $600 about 2 years ago.
  14. what are your trim levels set to? within +/- 3db? Is it possible those are set too high and over magnifying the issue?
  15. i literally JUST made 3 cables out of cat6 I had laying around. Roughly 16-20ft each ..I did one cable per speaker, 4 wires per post. It's more than enough to handle the power. Before these, I was running magnet wire in a bi-wire setup - 18ga for the LF posts and 22ga for the HF posts. Never an issue.
  16. i believe the joke is that 7 years later you're still trying to figure it out.
  17. i could argue all of the points mentioned here in favor of the 18-200, but seeing as how I'm a prime snob I would say I am a bit biased. The 55-200 is an excellent shooter, the range is good, the price is good, and for the intended shooter the situation is ideal. No point in making the young lady paranoid to hold her expensive gear, let alone use it. Having restriction in her attached focal range will teach her to work within her gear's limitations to acheive a particular composition, etc. Once she gets some time and practice under her belt, she will learn what she prefers to shoot and her style - and will start gravitating towards cameras/glass to fit that need. I used to chase after all sorts of glass until i started shooting weddings, which dramatically altered my needs. 11-16, 50, 55, 70-200. All fast glass and all for a specific use, and i learned to switch glass in advance of the need or to make a shot work with what i had attached. Quit doing weddings and now i have a little micro 4/3rds with a single 20mm.
  18. I disagree .. i've seen plenty of examples in my car, photography, and A/V forums where members local to me don't want to deal with shipping or drawing national/international attention to gear they want to offload. they only want local transactions and so they only think to post on craigslist or email their co-workers to pass the word around. obviously you glazed over what I wrote; my definition of lurker aligns with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurker . So we said the same thing and have the same criteria. no offense taken. i just see a whole lot of assumptions in this thread and wish to point out that there are alternative possibilities. I also feel strongly about protecting the credibility of what i consider to be this forum's "members".
  19. for the intended recipient and likely usage, not a single thing wrong with that. it will give her good versatility and very decent performance for quite a long while. protect your investment and spend another $16 on one of these so that she keeps the lens dust and smudge free without scratching anything. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546023-REG/Nikon_8228_Lens_Pen_Pro_Kit.html
  20. ha..forgot about those. I thought they had been phased out a la 3D technology. I guess we know who buys the greeting cards in my family...
  21. wasn't directed at just you, as there were a couple of comments along that thought. if anyone spends even a little bit of time around here getting to know its members (and not just debate completely pointless audio philosophies or "facts") they would be more cautious with accusations of shady actions. i wouldn't hesitate to invite a single member (by member, i mean people who aren't lurkers or simply create an account to offload gear) from this community into my home for a day of food, exposure to my family, or a thorough experience with my gear. I've had members do the same in return, we've had hundreds of dollars worth of cable go from member to member through the mail for testing, and so on. I can't say that for AVSforums or any of my other forums (except maybe my bmw 2002 group). i just found it odd that we skipped completely over the possibility that the guy went online while he had time to think about things and instead went straight to nefarious plans of an enterprising member who alerted him and offered to buy the gear instead.
  22. i'm certain aliens tipped him off. or maybe he figured he would use the time between audition and cash delivery to use that new fangled thing called the internet to see if his discount of $1000 was really warranted or not ..he likely came back to the klipsch forums he had long forgotten about, started browsing around, and noticed your post near the top of the lists. without any proof, i'd be careful how far you go accusing this group of such shady tactics. sure, it's possible, but my experience has shown these forum members to be highly credible people that self-police and ostracize those that do what you've described. if you do have concrete evidence of what you describe, please share it so that we can self-police and ostracize the ******.
  23. gotcha - new lens market is pretty much set when it comes to price. you can probably negotiate with a local shop, otherwise your best bet will be amazon, b&h, adorama, and ebay. if i recall, that model does NOT have an in-body focus motor, so you will need to buy lenses which contain the focus motor if she is to have AF capability. this should give you all you need to know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nikon_F-mount_lenses_with_integrated_autofocus_motors
  24. paper has innate electrical power capabilities?
