  1. I've seen other KLF 20 cabinets where there have been factory internal bracing. I've also heard other had 30s without it (mine had them). I suppose there must have been some running changes along the way. These 20s are on the early side of production, I think. I suppose it would be a good idea to put in some bracing. I was hoping this was going to be easy ):
  2. Loved the train derailment scene audio effects. I watched the BluRay version and was really impressed!
  3. Both front/rear baffles loose on these otherwise mint KLF 20s. I'm surprised by the lack of reinforcement/internal bracing. Pretty much the same as a KG 2.5 when it comes to baffle/cabinet contact area - even the little KGs are at least secured with screws. My KLF 30s had an internal bridge bracing the sides and rear - these are simply a hollow structure. The only thing holding onto the baffles are the top and bottom 1x1s in the corner. I see the glue line on the side piece and it totally missed the small little brace by the upper woofer.. I doubt these were ever secure right from the factory.
  4. I think the Kv2 is just fine for a center with that system. Yes, you can find quite a few used subs in the $200 range or maybe even less. The KSW12 comes to mind. I see them all the time - might be able to ****** a like new one up for $150 or less. I prefer the older SW12 or SW12II, but I rarely ever seem them available at a good price. These were the ones available when your KG speakers were purchased new. As for new, that Newegg deal posted above that expires Wed looks like a fantastic KILLER deal. I'd jump on that quickly if I were you.
  5. Yea, but then he would have been possibly upset and wouldn't have sold me the KSP-S6 surrounds for only $50 to go with the KLF 30s, C7 and KSW15 he sold me for $650! Some times, a good deal is simply good enough. In this case, a GREAT DEAL
  6. Plenty of refurbished Denon (complete with warranty) available on ecost at your budget.
  7. Yes, I think on the rear wall, but FLUSH against the wall. No need for an arm mount - will only make the situation worse. Another idea is to use ceiling mount/in ceiling speakers above the couch? I would play around with locations before finishing your walls/buring the wire.
  8. Ain't that the truth! To further rant about CL a bit, I had an offer to buy a whole set of speakers from a seller for his full asking price. Before I left to pick them up, he contacted me stating another party offered to pay MORE than his asking price, but felt the need to let me know and give me an opportunity to pay the new higher price. I politely refused - stating I'm not playing into a bidding war and agreed to the original terms which HE/NOT ME asked for. 3 days later, he told me to get the gear at the original price. I did, and when I asked him what happened to the other guy with the "higher offer", he told me he failed to show up to close the deal.
  9. You know.....there are many needing to sell their gear because they are in desperate need. I'm not a fan of people playing mind games or takign advantage of people on CL when it comes to negotiation. Either you want it or you don't. Either it's a good deal, or it's not. There is no good in trying to devalue somebody's stuff when you are negotiating just to get the price down unless there are issues with it that weren't disclosed before viewing them. It really isn't necessary and it really aggrivates the seller and makes the whole thing potentially hostile. My most recent CL score came about NOT because I was the first one to contact the seller, and NOT because I offered to pay more than the guy ahead of me, but because my communication was clear and honest. The seller told me I wasn't the first to respond, but she liked my email the best! By the way, that was the score of the century. $150 for a complete 5.1 system I later reluctantly resold for a tidy profit (to some clown that insisted on trying to talk me down on price, which was a game I didn't want to play and I didn't allow it). Just my opinion -
  10. Saw these on CL today - somebody already trying to make a buck ):
  11. Wow. What a wreck! Great sound effects and LFE.
  12. Moray, Any good ideas what material to use to block the rear ports if I relocate them? FYI: I have 1-2 feet between my speakers and back wall (even though the photos don't show this).
  13. Thanks for the tips. I actually pulled one of the top woofers to look inside. I was surprised at the lack of any internal bracing. The 30s do have an internal bridge in the middle part of the cabinet. It would be hard for me to break apart this mint set and modify it at this point. Sure, the Ti tweeters are an easy/reversable mod, but breaking out the baffles and relocating the ports? Perhaps if I find I have issues with the cabinet later on (: My KG 5.5s had a front port. I fail to understand why Klipsch insists on rear porting these types of speakers instead of locating them on the front. Does the air movement stretch out the fabric on the grills or something??? I never noticed any movement or trouble with my 5.5s in this regard. Is there some other benefit of having the ports in the rear????
  14. Did some A/B testing. At first, the 20s sounded terrible, but then I swapped their locations in my room, and the 20's sounded better than the 30s. In the end, I had to remove the 2nd pair from the room for the listening tests, so no A-B comparisons without some time in between (: I think I like the 30s better for that "slam" factor, but I really like the 20s, too. I am keeping the 20s simply because they are quite a bit smaller and fit in my room better. They are also in absolute PERFECT MINT condition (nicest speakers I've ever owned), and my 30s are not quite as nice. Wish I could keep them both, but can't do it. Getting these 20's was like purchasing new speakers - They even came in the original plastic, foam, and mint boxes!!!!
  15. Interesting.... I just acquired a nice pair of 20s but haven't listened to them yet. Only 1 pair can stay, so either these or my 30s have to go.
  16. I seem to remember some around here give preference to the KLF 20 over the larger KLF 30. Why would that be? Something about the crossover differences?
  17. I will dissagree to a point. If you don't have a sub, keep the KGs. If you do have a quality sub, you might like the HIIs, but they likely won't fit in the same place as your KG. You will maybe need to budget for some stands? I had my KG 5.5s setup for many years and always liked them. My buddy brought over a pair of HIIs to screw around with a left them for a week. I did not care for them compared to the KG. I did a lot of A/B testing and I would not have traded my KGs for them. When I found my Quartets, I changed my mind and ended up selling the KG 5.5 in favor of the Quartets. All the good that the HIIs had, and they have excellent bass, too! Not to mention the price is cheaper than HIIs.
  18. +1 Then when you are ready to upgrade, move your nice bookshelves to the rear or in that 7.1 placement you are looking for in the future.
  19. Saw that - seemed like a good deal to me, too. Since you now have sold off your SVS sub, you are right to keep your Forte' IIs. Those pics make it seem like the Lascalas take up the footprint of 2 Forte' speakers. Yikes! It would be cool to have a set of Lascalas......The WTF look on people's face when they visit and notice those things must be fun.
  20. One of the coolest demos is the Paramount logo splash at the start of the movie. Nice pan through all 7 channels. Very cool to hear the difference when toggling the 5.1/7.1 I can't speak about the DVD as I only watched the BluRay. Not sure how anybody could be underwhelmed with a proper setup. Tron was very heavy in the bass (which I very much enjoyed), and T3 was more about a great mix in all the available channels and not just a loud score. At one point, I walked around my room and could hear all the different things pumped into the sides and rear surrounds - very discrete info coming out of all those different speakers. The dialogue out the center channel was also superb. I will also say that the picture quality was beyond amazing. Those alien robots looked real throughout the whole movie. I never once felt like I was watching a CGI movie unlike many others that are so distracting.
  21. Watched this last night - by far the best sound I've ever heard out of my HT. I thought Tron was good, this is way better!!! I watched several parts in both 5.1 and 7.1. This is truly an amazing soundtrack and the 7.1 is very nicely done. If you were on the fence about doing a 7.1 system, this Bluray will make you want one.
  22. Is this for 2 channel or HT? Sub or no sub in the system? On that size shelf, I would suggest a KG 2.5 or 2.2 but since I imagine these will be high off the floor, a sub will help - especially for HT. I built my dad a KG system similar to this, and the WTW design lends itself nicely to horizontal placement and the grill badges are easy to relocate as well. They are ported in the rear, so they should still have enough room to breathe on a 2' deep shelf. You can get these speakers cheap and try them out? As for Forte I vs Forte II, I'd go with the Forte II every time (surprised you are finding them cheap). I only see Forte I available around here for some reason. Too big / heavy for putting on a shelf, I think. The Quartets without riser bases may work for you if you have to go bigger than the KG series. The 3.2 and 4.2 / 5.2 are also a shallow depth speaker, both with front passive radiators that may be able to do the job for you easier than the Quartet/Forte series.
  23. Heavy duty anchors? What about your sheetrock - it could still tear out? I don't think I would mount RB-75s - suspended without some sort of bracing to wood studs. You are asking for trouble, my friend.
  24. You can expect your wife to freak out when she sees these huge beasts! You can expect to be told to turn it down. You can expect that she will want to go buy something for herself to get back at you. You can expect to run out of storage space for your HIIs that you won't want to part with, but won't sound as good as your KLFs.
