  2. So the magnetic tape could be playing a previous "take" of the artist when the engineer is using the same spot on the tape and recording over it? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  3. Yea, just sharing the internet is all I'm after. I'm using a Dell XPS-T600 P-III and she has a Dell XPS-T450 P-II that I pulled out of the garbage of a lawyer in my building. Heck! He was throwing it out, how could I go wrong!? I just wanted to get the memory out of it. But then I hooked it up with my monitor, keyboard and mouse at my desk at work. Holy cow!! It still works! The only thing wrong was that it said it had a scuzzy file that was corrupt or missing. Easy enough, I brought it home, deleted the only SCSI driver in it (ZIP100 drive), downloaded a new one from IOMEGA and boom! Two years of flawless service. It was only six months old! For now she's on the dial-up service from the same ISP as my DSL. The lawyer, who's about 90 years old, later found out I have the computer he threw away tried to accuse me of "Reading" his hard drive. Like I really care what a probate attorney has to say on a machine he doesn't understand. The only thing else wrong is a scratch on the side of the cabinet where I ripped it out of the big gray trash bin. He shouldn't take it too hard though, my girlfriend is a divorced mother of two who can barely make the house payment. She uses it for her work and her college studies. She's a teacher at a high school of children with multiple disabilities, has her Masters and is under Emergency Certification till she can get her Disablities Teaching Certificate. Most of her students have Down's Syndrome. If he's still mad at me/her if/when I tell him that then I think he's got a real problem. Since then I rounded up for her an old (now rebuilt) HP III Laser Printer (free) and an extra 512 megs of memory (my old boards since I bought 3 Crucial 256 meg boards. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 09-05-2002 at 11:17 PM
  4. After having so much trouble with the Linksys the first time I was able to return it to the store. I could by it again I'm sure. My operating system is Windows 98SE (at work it's just plain 98) but the next machine will probably have XP or whatever's next. The NIC card in my machine is indeed a 3COM 3C905C-TXM 10/100 Remote Wake Up. My girlfriend's ex-husband wired up one end of the CAT5 and left the other end for me to do. I wish he left me a picture of what color wire went where. The one he made (going to an RJ45 jack plate) is for going to my girlfriend's computer. Mine is just gonna be connected by a pre-wired CAT5 / RJ-45 line just a couple of feet away. Her machine is at least 30-40 ft worth of wire away. One thing that does really appeal to me is a static IP. AT work I just boot the thing up and its already logged on. At home I have The Weather Channel updating itself every 12 minutes so it doesn't time out to log off. We never turn off the router at work but we do at home, it's plugged into my UPS (APC 650Pro). Believe me I am definitely going to print all this and save it when I get the funds to get this thing rollin' again. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  5. Man, if there were such a thing as a "Klipschy Award" you'd definitely get one. I guess I should have given a little more info about what we have. It's an always-on ADSL from the phone company. When we had a (outside the phone company) company come out and install all the drops (wall outlets to plug each node into) and install and configure the software. Like many other similar companies since then they've gone belly up. Now we have no tech support to fall back on. We have an unlimited user license and they gave us a somewhat impressive looking 24-port hub. From there we're using a Cisco 675 ADSL Modem. The program was something like $600 and each drop was another $100 plus labor of $125/hour. I'm not really sure what a DHCP is so please forgive me for being "old". The more I think about it I may only have to configure one other computer (desktop) other than mine (desktop also). I just want a definite plan for when the time comes to replace the computers that we have. It could be six months from now or three years. Knowing my luck another three or four Windows operating systems will be introduced and made obsolete in that time. Speaking of Linksys, I tried to get our two home computers both on the same type of ADSL connection as the office. I ran all the CAT5 needed. I then bought a BEFSR41 router with a four-port switch. Followed the instructions as best I could and my computer still would not recognize the router much less the Internet. After trying to work things out for a couple weeks I finally called Linksys' tech support. After talking to tech whose first language is definitely NOT English (I have a hard time understanding broken English with heavy accents) he asked me what a Cisco 675 was (that struck me weird) and shortly after that he said that Cisco was not compatible with Linksys. Maybe I just need a $20 hub. I then thought of just calling my ISP and have them do what's left to be done. We'll see. BTW- If your ever in Cincy the first Nudie BAr is on me (what am I saying there's probably nude beaches all over where you are. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  6. I guess the ever money generating lottery is now toast. Get this, I heard on the radio a few days ago that Target (I think) is no longer gonna carry sports jerseys or ball caps with the number 88 on them (??). According to some wacked out people the 8th number in the German alphabet is "H". So, obviously tis represents the letters "HH" together which obviously stands for "Heil Hitler"!! If I were Lynn Swann I would be livid. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  7. Justin! Do you know anything about WinProxy (Ver. 2.1R2g)? I have this at work and I'm kinda in charge of it. No troubles now but when the time comes to get new computers it will have to be installed on the new machines. I would like to know if there is a way to back-up all the settings that can be imported once the new machines are here. So I could just pop in a disk in each node and import the data/settings. I sent an e-mail to Ositis also to see if they can help. Thanks a ton (again!!) ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  8. Ya mean I can't even play Solitair on my PC from the factory with Windows? I would eally like to know the REAL reason for this one and not what US politicians tell their people here. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 09-04-2002 at 01:59 PM

Thankfully I'm only 18lbs. heavier than high-school years (127 to 145lbs.). As far as Justin's family wealth goes, I hav eno trouble with anyone that has that much money and spends it regularly. It puts people to work and the economy moving. I feel that money is no good unless it's spent. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit

  11. Thanks a bunch guys! I'm just waitin' for Justin to send me those plane tickets to the Caymans. No real presents to speak of. A few nice gestures from people I work with and a wonderful home cooked dinner from the little woman. There was a hell of a party however. Last night, a local FM rock station ( WEBN 102.7 ) had there annual Labor Day Riverfest Celebration. This is where 450,000 people go to banks of the Ohio River and watch over 7,000 shells of fireworks launched from four coal barges on the river in two close proximity locations. It's kind of the last bash of the summer around here. Go to www.webn.com . The 'EBN Frog' is their mascott. I even had the honors of putting on the "Frog Suit" a few times for promotions at work (previous job). 12. And with that, in the linguistics of Monty Python- "I'm 37, I'm not old!" ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  13. Somebody at Goog Guys, if they were on the ball and cared about the business, would compare the serial numbers on the cabinets (if any) to the ones on the boxes. However, when I registered my KLF-20's I did it on line and I don't remember having to produce a copy of the receipt. It pretty much relied on the honor system. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  14. A couple years after high school I met up with someone I graduated with. He said he was working for the local Metropolitan Sewer District.......counting turds. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  15. I've got a pair of HD-540's from about 12 or 13 years ago. They sound fine but, like yours, the vinyl on the cups peals off every time I use(d) them. this started about three years after I bought them. I would take them off my head and the vinyl would stick to my jaw! ick... They've bin in storage four about five years now. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  16. boa- About a year ago I was visiting family in Michigan (Flint). On the way back I was on Rt.23(S) doin' about 85mph. Then the next "wave" of traffic catches up from behind doin', say, 95-100mph. And these were big SUV's and Geo Metro's alike. When they passed (there was more than one wave) my rental car did that sideways sway the same as when a semi- passes you oncoming. To think I was worried about getting a ticket doin' 10mph over the limit! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 08-30-2002 at 08:53 PM
  17. Audiophiles have the right to snob off ANYONE that spends less on their system than he/she did. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  18. If your wanting to stay with the same Mac SS units and the same motiff then you amay want to look at a C28. For a little more versatility then take a look at a C31V. The C28, I'm told by Klipsch, was the preamp used while testing the KLF Legend speakers. A used one in pretty decent shape from Audio Classics is going for $700 but their grading scale fairs on understating the condidtion (it's in better shape than they say). Audio Classics may be a little expensive but it coems with a limited warranty and it's gone over pretty well. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit

  20. Damn!! She didn't make the cut. I'm still gonna get that picture up on here though. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  21. Yup, I just came from there picking up some Erik Satie and Claude DeBussy cd's and thought I would really amuse myself by dropping in the sound room (can't bring myself to call it a music room). After hearing that garbage I most certainly lament over the stuff Mr. Lansing put out in the 60's and 70's. My kingdom for another pair of L200's or even better L300's. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 09-02-2002 at 02:18 PM

  23. You'll get a cleaner video picture with the component video angle. The colors will look less "snowy" and teh edges will be sharper. In order of quality of cables (and this assuming that you would use the same brand and model/series of cable) is RG cable (coaxial), composite RCA cable, S-video, Tos link (light) and then composite. Hope this helps! Good luck, ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  24. Thanks a lot guys! Ed- I'll see if I can get a snapshot of the both of us. She works for one of my clients. If anyone is curious, her name is pronounced with the "i" sounding of a long "e" and with emphasis on that letter. The last name, I think, sounds like "arayhola". Hope thats right. We'll when I get some film for the camera. I know, I'm such a low life not having a digital. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  25. I wouldn't go so far as to say I was jipped on my Monster HTS-5000 but I would have to think long and hard brfore I would pay the $600 retail for it. I paid $360 at a Dutch Auction on E-Bay. An audible difference? None, as far as I'm hearin'. But sometimes I like to see how steady and how much current is coming into the system. A rock steady 120v is optimum. Mine tends to sway between 108v and 125v. May it's mental but I "think" the sound isn't as good when the voltage is under that 120 mark. If anything it's one hell of a surge protector/outlet strip. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 08-22-2002 at 08:55 PM
