  1. I currently have set up Cornwall IIs with the Carver M1.0t amp. The sound is very good. I assume you have the amp you want or are at least looking at one; PM me if you are interested in a Carver m1.0t as I have another one or two I could sell. The other amps I set up with the Cornwalls to compare were HK, McIntosh 2205, and a Denon receiver.
  2. You stole them from a priest while wearing a ski mask? That's terrible []
  3. This thread is making me really anxious. Very, very nice speakers and I'm enjoying reading your thread. I have a pair of '78s that I purchased and haven't been able to hook up yet. They are my winter project, and I have other projects that have to be completed first. SWMBO says I have a couple pair of speakers need to find a new home before these are brought in. Does anybody here think 4 pair of Heresy's and pair of Cornwalls is too much?
  4. Congrats on the new additions, they look awesome. The veneer has a nice grain, and they look to be in excellent shape. What do you run for amp and pre?
  5. I did see a smurfs record at Goodwill a few weeks back. Why o why didn't I get it? Then I could have actively participated in this thread.... Last time I went, it was gone along with the other kids records, I'm surprised people buy these. Oh yeah, Congrats on the score!
  6. To close the story, I tried a Marantz CD5003, which had an issue reading the CD so it was returned. I also didn't think it sounded any better than an old Sony cheapy I had laying around. I ended up taking the play to Chicago to the Denon certified repair shop and for $100 I have my player back, as good as new. I am happy with the player and not to have had to spend more money.
  7. Below are a couple pictures of a Walnut Veneered Heresey with pretty severe water damage. The damage came from having a wet towel left wrapped around the speaker during transport. I'm guessing it was left on for more than a day. The first picture is from 6 weeks ago, a few days after the damage was done. The damage is severe on one side, it carries over to the top as you can see a little in the second picture. The second picture is from yesterday, during the start of the "repair attempt". It is after wiping the side and top down with plenty of mineral spirits on a clean cheese cloth, then a cotton rag with a few quick wipes of laquer thinner. The laquer thinner took off more stain, but it also whiten the water stained areas a little, keeping the difference in color about the same - not really what I was hoping for. After letting it dry for a couple hours, it was obvious this was not going to be easy. I then considered a few options, including light sanding, more mineral spirits wiping, reveneering (not really considered very long), oxalic acid (lots of work)and then decided to do more of an internet search. This provided the next option, which I decided to try this morning. I realize now, maybe I should have started this thread BEFORE the second "fix" to solicit ideas, but it is too late. I admit - I'm impatient! I found a lot of "interesting" ideas about how to treat water stains. I decided to try out this old wives tale: Mix ashes with mayonnaise into a paste and rub onto the wood with the grain, while applying heat. I like trees, I have ashes in my fireplace, I also like burning things, mayonnaise is good.... must be a good idea. Full Disclosure: I'm an engineer, and this really strikes me as kind of wierd, but I like the idea. The last picture is the "test plot" done at the bottom of the speaker where there is both white damage and a black stain from the water. The picture is taken after about 10 minutes of rubbing the area with the paste. I'm going to try to be patient and let it sit for a day or two and see how it looks as the area dries. Right now it doesn't look bad. Here are a few of my concerns / thoughts: 1. Not much will happen, it will dry and still look crappy 2. It will look better, and balance will be restored to the world. If this actually works, we'll have to give the speakers a new name, some combination of Heresy and Mayonnaise. 3. My real concern is that the oil in the mayonnaise will make restaining the speakers difficult 4. If all else fails, then oxalic acid may get the nod. I'm trying to avoid this right now. This is just after wiping with mineral spirits on a clean rag. Then a couple quick wipes with laquer thinner. The bottom 5" is the "test area" for the woodashmayonnaiseheat treatment. This is the part of the speaker that emits scent - I'm going to market this as a new technology the caters to your sense of smell as well as hearing. If anybody has any input I'm certainly open to ideas. As you can guess from the mayonnaise experiment, I probably won't listen to your ideas, but I will consider them. I will follow up and let you know how this turns out so others can either try what I did, or know enough to avoid it.
  8. Thanks GLA51. Any other suggestions from Klipschland?
  9. My trusty Denon DVM-4800 broke yesterday [:'(] and I need to find a replacement. I don't own a blue ray player, I've considered the OPPO since everybody recommends it. However, I'm really not wanting to spend a whole lot of money. I looked at Craig's List and don't see anything locally that is better than a $100 player from walmart. I use the player with a 56" rear projection TV with DVDs 10% of the time and for two channel listening of CDs 90% of the time. I mix around components, but usually, there is a Denon AVR-2802 pushing a pair of Heresy speakers, and a sunfire sub with movies. Otherwise, I switch out and use it with a pair of Cornwall IIs. I've never watched a movie on Blue Ray but I'm guessing it might be time to move in that direction. Here are the options I'm considering: 1. $300, Denon DBP-2010CI,Reference Blu-ray/DVD/CD Player, it doesn't seem to play DVD audio; I only have (3) DVD-A anyway http://usa.denon.com/DBP-2010CI_Lit609.pdf Does anybody have any reasons not to get this, or maybe some suggestions on getting something different. 2. For $300, Oppo BDP-80, but it says it is not recommended for big screen TVs and it doesn't have a dedicated two channel output 3. For $500, Oppo BDP-83, sounds like the way to go, but you can see I'm hesitating on the $$$ Opinions, please?
  10. Wow, you were right, this thread has taken a little turn! I also had a nice pair of 901 series VI, that I did like quite a bit. I can confirm after changing from 200 watts / channel to 460 w/ch the speakers do indeed sound better with more power. Placement is also important. Even though they were much smaller, the WAF was not high at my house because they had to "stick out" 18" from the wall, and the stands weren't liked either. They were replaced with my current set of Cornwalls downstairs and a pair of KP201s upstairs. When comparing the Klipsch and the Bose, to my ears the Klipsch have a more defined sound, with the Bose being pretty good, and the Klipsch being excellent. However, that is just my ears and my tastes. I never make fun of the 901s. They are a great speaker, especially for the price you can pick up a used pair in good shape.
  11. I have the Sunfire Symphonic Reference Preamp. It is an excellent preamp - dead silent, and the music comes through sounding awesome. I also have a Carver C1 which is a very good pre, however the phono stage is not as good as the Sunfire, and mine is not as quiet as the Sunfire, probably due to age. I've used both with Heresy and Cornwalls - good stuff! Another nice thing about the Sunfire is having a remote.
  12. I have a few pair of Heresy's (I & 2) along with a pair of cornwalls. I also have a Sunfire True Signature subwoofer that I have upstairs hooked up and I occasionally use it with the Heresy II's. I do NOT use the sub very often when listening to music, but when watching movies and I want "effects", ie. really low bass. I know the GLA51 already covered the Heresy basics above, but to reiterate, these speakers set up right sound awesome. Putting them on the floor, close to the wall (I have them in corners) they are not shy of bass. They sound awesome. Yes, I like the Cornwalls better, but the Heresy are awesome as well. In addition to making the purchase that fits your budget, the size of the speakers also need to fit work for you. I don't know your situation, but I have another besides myself I have to please when it come to decorating. When she is happy, I'm happy, and right now and can't complain with the speakers I have and the car (see avatar above) taking up space in our garage. The Sunfire subs are similar to the Heresy speakers in one way - bang for your buck.
  13. CD's (200) 60% Radio, 30% LPs - about 150, 10% Loud, as much as I can! The radio would be less, but it is upstairs with the Heresy's which is where we normally are. The LPs are only in the basement with some oof the CDs and the Cornwalls. Maybe someday, they'll get moved upstairs, the WAF is slowly rising.
  14. Yura - is that a real add? Those white speakers look pretty cool. Sunburnwilly - I like your idea, pretty cool. Could look pretty neat, and like you mentioned, if not, just sand and paint over.
  15. Now - that's an idea she would love. She bought a twilight LP in the mall - the only LP she owns! Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming. I like the "sock" idea, I would just need to figure out how to make that stay in place. I agree that white speakers don't look too good, or painted in general, no offense to the smurfs! Although it is an option, and she may like the idea of getting to be creative herself with them.
  16. I'm trying to get some ideas together for a pair of decorator Heresey speakers I have that are fairly old, standard unfished plywood. They currently look like what they are - 35 year old speakers, small chips, one more sun faded than the other.... I don't want to wreck the speakers, so I'm not going to glue fabric onto them, but am open to fun ideas. For her 17th b-day and maybe Christmas, I would like to build a small music system for her based on using the speakers, and of course will need to be able to utilize an ipod (what else did you expect?). I have time. I'll need some ideas for getting the ipod music to the speakers, I'm sure I can find an inexpensive used stereo locally on Craigslist. I don't really know the best way to get the music from an ipod to a stereo, I'm a CD and vinyl guy. She has a laptop, so if that is easy, its an option. One of my main goals is to do something fun with the speakers. Here is where I need the most help - creativity, please! The only idea I can come up with is long, fuzzy pink fabric. No idea how to attach without trashing the speaker. I realize in 2 years she'll be taking these to college and I (she'll) need to be able to redo the look if it isn't deemed cool. I think she'll be open to anything fun and appreciate my efforts. She likes pink & gray, orange, dark (royal) purple, silver, and teal. Fun textures are fine. Her room currently has mostly black and silver items (picture frames, end table, keyboard & stand), but I really don't want to make these black - too borin, and matching her current set-up isn't really important since tastes change. Your ideas and help will be appreciated! Here is a pic of what I have to start with.
  17. Just curious on what a pair of Klipschorns sold for back in the day. Any original owners out there that remember?
  18. Nice thread. Here is a pic of a different KP-201 than normally seen. I'd really like to see a spec sheet & brochure for these speakers if somebody has one. Ignore the upside down grill....
  19. Thanks for the tip; I'd like to do this, but don't know what you are talking about. Can you give me a more detailed description of how to do this? What is the result with ohm meter if bad, and if good? Thanks! Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm sure it is quite simple, I just don't have experience with this yet.
  20. I'm looking at a pair of La Scalas that need to be reconed, refinished (from a bar, water stains included), and recapped due to age. They have the AL crossovers, and have a owner applied stained wood finish. What would be a fair price for these? I know I'll need to have the crossovers recapped, woofers either replaced or reconed - they were pushed too hard; they will need grill cloth, and I can refinish them myself. They are from the mid 1980s. Sorry, I don't have photos, but you have all seen rough looking La Scalas before. They are a little beat up, but not bad. Water marks from drinks being sat on them is mostly it. Any opinions will be appreciated. I'd like to get them if the deal is right, but I don't want to buy a money pit either. If you have any suggestions for other potential problems to look, that would be appreciated as well.
  21. I sign a purchase agreement with the local propane compay so I'm paying about 1.40 / gallon for this year, regardless of the month. My 1,000 tank is down to 30% so, I'm about to get hit with big invoice. However, I'm heating a very large space. I run a Woodstock Soapstone wood stove 24/7 for 5 months of the year. It has lowered our propane usage by about $2k / year. Wow, I could buy some nice speakers with that, couldn't I?
  22. I basically did the same with my new to me, Cornwall II's and they look very nice. "Ada Boy", you did a great job!
  23. OK, After the 3rd daily application of BLO, I must not have wiped the excess well enough. I rubbed the BLO in with my hand and wiped them down with cheesecloth after 15 mins. In some of the hard to reach areas I now have little gummy "rubber balls" forming when I wipe over the veneer. Do I just wipe this off and all is well; or do I need to do anything more drastic? I'm guessing since I have a little extra buildup now, I'll quit the daily applications and wait a week before apply the BLO again. Since these are new to me I have no idea if the previous owner oil them or not. They do look good. The sun faded area is better, but not matching. For now I'm content to listen to them! If the faded area still bothers me this summer, I'll wipe them down and start fresh as suggested above when I can open windows and get some ventilation or do it in the garage. Getting cold in Iowa!
