  1. Well, maybe not...Bad day in Japan. Sounds like they had a bit of a hydrogen cloud problem -- that ignited. Sorry to see it happened. Time to update their plants? Chris I guess it would take a while to examine the buildings for breaks after 8.9. So the wreaking-ball might be used. Yes its going to cost Japan a lot to get the mess sorted out. Its not like they where asking for it to happen it just unexpectedly happened.
  2. It could be placed in the wrong location or is in the right location yet the seating is in the wrong location and between you and sub is Mr. Null himself! You have possible null smooth shallow dip between part of the sub bass frequency range and you have the sub up TOO high against the LCRS and the level is bottoming! Id place an SPL db meter close to each LCRS balance the level with wideband pink noise on Dolby/dts test CD DVD until the level is the same. You should use RTA but you might not have one. Okay now place the SPL near the sub and set the level to the same close as possible level. Now play the films that you forget to mention and it should sound different yes different smoother softer quieter yes! Unless you stick another sub in of the same make next to the sub and set the level to the same as the first sub, the frequency response will slowly change from worse to good but you need something to analyzer youre room. But for now give it try the sub shouldnt totally overwhelm the LCRS if you looked on matching 31band RTA with each LCRS and LFE.1 you shouldnt see the LFE.1 going (over the top). Smaller speakers will sound bright somewhere in the mid to high range forcing you too play the sub WAY TO HIGH The bass in LCRS should be give a huge shake as it extends down lower than the sub LFE.1 and try not to use bass management let the LCRS play as they are, you might need extra subs for those channels so you can tuck the subs out of sight and still give shaking rattling rumbling impact. You might be thinking whats the point of all this and you know, youre right. But theres very little you can do to get around it one sub cant do the tango without two or more subs to tackle Mr. Null, who is mean life sub sucking bugger. And dont forget to send the bill to Mr. Null who owes you $1200 because I guess thats want another sub will cost.
  3. Im not heartless I feel for the victims and yet find the whole earthquake issue interesting and strangely I play earthquake on DVD. I remember the 1989 earthquake in news. The picture of the freeway was used on back cover Earthquake on re-issue widescreen laserdisc. I think youre post puts it into proper content good memory for recall I guess it stuck in your memory firmly. Its like me shaking a filing cabinet its going to sound loud! But on the outside say in field I know you, werent anywhere near to field as it would sound different. I think sub should be fixed into walls to create a mild level not high get too carried away until something breaks! I think the room above the basement should be used and the basement to house 18 subs stacked in the room with few inches for the port to breath and use the whole floor and then stack the same cluster on top of the ones stacked on the floor with matching amps to each sub and crossover and PEQ for each sub and master PEQ for the single LFE.1 output. I think that would do it! At softer level with WTF scare the wits out of you. Peter Fonda! The drunk Earthquake As for stacking subs in huge clusters it might rattle the floorboards something silly! Im surprised the film still gets 70mm screenings at special SenSurround cinema house in England and Germany. But 4 screenings for me left its mark me. I prefer a lesser level today at home and there are those (shakers) so subs need only to be at lesser level which means less hearing loss issues. Films arent that realistic otherwise it would level the cinema in less than 1min. I wonder what they used to balance the sound system for sensurround? I know Dolby employed EQ into the CP processors to get better response from the loudspeakers so what did sensurround use back in 1974 and slightly onwards till it was retired.
  4. Yes, George Lucas will find a away to keep that money making machine rolling. I predict this. Hell release Phantom Menace next year and do we need to see Jar, Jar sticking his, tongue in out, (in our faces)! I think not. Within a month hell have Attack of Clones with ultra wooden 3D effects to accompany the total wooden dialogue that not even a THX sound system can fix. Then hell bring out Revenge of the Sith a month later then A New Hopeless 3D to try and impress the hell out of all us original STAR WARS fans after thats finished hell bring out The Empire Strikes 3D with Wampa in faces to scare the living crap out of the audience sending children crying and pissing theyre trousers before they can reach toilets. Then finally the madness will end with Return of Jedi while we stand gazed in amazement as two logs sandwich an At-At and we go wow that was the best 3D in the whole film series! Im not going to the cinema to see it, Ill wait until its all finished and the greedy sly bugger re-releases STAR WARS bluray 3D to scam more money into the triple chin. Hes like a hamster! He just doesnt know when to STOP milking! Ive had enough of him.
  5. Count me out, Im not going to be so hasty and rush out and blow some £50.00 on a bluray STAR WARS unless it contains the theatrical releases in original Dolby stereo digital TrueHD with mono surrounds as they were mixed with mono surrounds very few blow-up releases made for 70mm had stereo surrounds. I prefer films preserved (perseveration) I read that Lucas attended board many years ago and was strongly behind film perseveration. What a total hypocrite. He doesnt know of word original he couldnt find it English dictionary book. So Ill be looking at DVDBever site for screen capture AB comparisons and a few words like Dolby TrueHD because after all the film was mixed in Dolby and released in Dolby which gave the films that extra few million at the box-office no doubt. Ill bet it would end up with dtshd master audio with no consumer option of Dolby TrueHD mark my words. Once bitten twice shy. I know what the crafty bugger is up to, we all do, only time will tell just before September.

Its just a part of what mixes do part of the art that they hope some audiences can hear in their mixes theyve created over many hours month of labour. As for Willis DIE HARD thats action classic for sound effects panning and even the kitchen sink was thrown in but, miss and bounced out the widow and landed on the police car in the uncut version, LOL its got a lot going that one has. Often I look at the imdb for sound department oh, Andy Nelson (sound re-recording mixer) THE A-TEAM (2010) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/fullcredits#cast He's done a few good Dolby mixes in the past! X-Files had few scenes with dialogue panning in corn crop fields when the helicopters was chancing Sully and Mulder. Ive seen the trailer to The-A Team so the helicopter pans should be exacting and interesting to listen to.
  7. Looking at the rear of the Marantz it has pre-RCA inputs and outputs up to 8channles I dont think you can to wrong. Id look and look until you see it going for less than what its going for then buy! It might take a few months for the price to drop and you can save a few, bob. Separates add on later matching amps good brands out there from Behringer you cant go too wrong. Make the speakers active run them with electronically crossover network system Behringer DCX249, and more just run the Marantz as processor to most of the decoding for past and current new Dolby dts decoding. It wont happen overnight unless you won small few grand on, the lottery that you can put towards the sound system? Most new low budget AVR today dont come with pre-RCA inputs/outputs you have to aim for mid price budget or higher because I think the manufactures is aware that most are not going to use the internal amps in the AVR. Im looking at Onkyo when I get around to it, my system is running fine for now but would like a new AVR as its just over or getting on for 11 years.
  8. Oh that's wrong LOL[] oh look assorted smiles for sleep and full moooon [mo] Not a chance at seeing the moon tonight. I have telescope but its hopelessly cloudy and yes one of these is required [um] lol
  9. ^^^Wow that was detailed very thorough post. So no need for alarm is what youre saying. Management has it contained and under control. I hope so for their sakes.
  10. shake777 you asked about dialogue panning. I guess the text is jumbled up into a huge cluster! sigh is there button that puts the text into correct order? Its like reading the telephone directory when drunk. [] I have only around just over 1 thousand films on laserdisc DVD and bluray thats nothing compared with all the film titles internationally from around the world which is well over the 8 or 9million by now. Id have to keep going back and forth to the bed to write down all the titles that mostly have dialogue panning just from looking at the title the sound is stored in my memory but I dont want to overload my mind tonight. LOL It really started I guess with Fantasia (1940) but I dont have that on DVD I think the newer version for bluray 7.1 is wrong if the original mix and other mixes arent accompanied with it as it went though didnt release prints for cinemas over years with different re-mixes. The 1950s saw magnetic sound on 35mm with up to 4channles of true discrete sound. Later on 70mm pushed sound further with up 6 magnetic tracks of high-fidelity audio this employed 5 sets of matching loudspeakers placed around large deep curved screens to span the sound out along with an actors voice sound in the same location as they where on screen. It wasnt prefect it had solo voice placed on all five and slight volume adjustments in level to create these unique mixes of the time. It lasted till about mid 70s where most films called the Road Show 70mm rarely came about, most of what audiences heard was 35mm mono or stereo optical. I think Dolby made great improvements over what Todd-AO started with its one of the recognizable names in show business back in its hay days. Today its very, very rare one would hear dialogue panning in new Dolby film mix? Not many directors care to use it I guess not many mixers have the bulls to push for it. It does make the film a bit more entertaining and seem believable. South Pacific The Sound of Music 2001: A space odyssey (first edition region1 DVD only) or laserdiscs! Later versions of DVD and bluray which is the same as the DVD have been poorly re-mixed with no care to preserving the original theatrical mix. Most of the dialogue panning has been condensed down and sent to centre front. Only a few original hard to half dialogue pans exits on the later DVD/bluray its not worth buying. The Towering Inferno Lawrence of Arabia Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom Indiana Jones and Last Crusade West Side Story Terminator 2 Backdraft Hook Dances with Wolves Avatar Titanic SALT Top Gun Alien Aliens Alien 3 Toy Story Toy Story 2 (Im not sure about Toy Story3 I havent listened to it yet) We Were Soldiers Mission To Mars The list will take me days months but to put together new films coming out each week as well, even thou I dont go to the cinema no more. I havent been in well over year and half maybe 2 years now. I can always come back and re-edit the list

I did an unusual search I didnt expect to get much from (dialogue panning in films) and this link was top of the page on page 1. http://socialsounddesign.com/questions/5454/reference-movies-for-dialog-panning Mmm, its not a bad link reading though it. Maybe A to Z list of all films with dialogue panning a kinder of thread the list would take months to compile the data months there are literally (off the top of my Id say a few good decent several hundred) and I only have small portion of the classic ones.

Im pulling your leg or joking. When I play a film Im listening for lots of things I hope are in (a well done film mix). The Expendables from what I understand is released in 7.1 8channles with 4 channel surround, rather then the usual common 2. Ive been tempted to buying it but there are two bluray sets. Id like to have one where it showcase the film as theatrical and option 2 extended edition without buy to versions (because I know where its leading) Milking! lol Okay Ill take a chance on it. I was hugely disappointed with Inception (2010) it could have far more going in LCR mix but most of it was centred with drowned left/right making centre mix useless, what Im saying is I dont want enough crap bluray in my small collection. Thunderbirds was the same it could have been shot in scope and used lots of crazy wild dialogue panning, but not many mixers push for that now its centre, centre. I bet the colours are flawless You must have classics like Indiana Jones temple of doom/last crusade or The Towering Inferno Star Trek V okay it wasnt the best but it had the most dilaouge panning going with off-screen to on-screen pans, not a great deal of, just enough. So, if I see a decent low price on play.com for next week Ill order it. I liked enjoyed the TV show during early 80s. What was the show or was it the pilot where military police are chancing the A-team crew and crash their car in William Shatners office or bedroom? LOL Its a long time ago.
  13. Ive head that one before. I dont have torch with wide to narrow beam only mobile phone with LED light that has come in useful in some cases. Ive heard about using a mirror placed on wall but thats for reflections and placement of defuses and I need mate to move a mirror up and down the wall while Im looking for the refection of the loudspeaker. Id prefer 12SR if I could get my paws on four of them in good condition. I thought the control 5 looked like some of Klipsch the smaller bookshelf models is it 51 and up for 6.5 with small radial horn. B&W DM601 sound good for small rooms my mate as pair that have done well for over 10 years. Ill buy a cheap flashlight of ebay next week unless I see on in the cheap high street stores. Cheers anyway
  14. Ill take some new readings monitor it on the RTA wideband pink noise and move shift the left and right up and down platform. As for sweating it no I have no worries about just a natural, curiosity about it. Theres a still lot to learn about the hobby. I should have gotten into in early 70s rather than late 80s. Ive have them toed in before in the past. At present there just all lined up facing forwards. Cheers
  15. I just looked at the news. [] That plant is condemned for the wreaking-ball its unsafe now! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12720219
  16. Kinder like when going fishing on boat, yeah! Make house of cards on boat it will fall down time and time again. The waves seismic wave must be busting water drainage and (gas pipes) up buckling twisting and bend them up! Billions of yen to fix all that over the years! And theyll still get the odd smaller earthquake thats going to mess up there work! SIGH
  17. My apologies if the text is all clustered together I cant figure out, why? I thought Id keep this one separate from the yesterdays earthquake that stuck Japan that subject is different matter. For years Ive had this, fascination about earthquakes. Ive experienced Universals 1974 disaster flick EARTHQUAKE that was exhibited in several types of Sensurround I think the one in the uk was 70mm six-track mag with those huge Cerwin-Vega stacked somewhere behind the screen at the local ABC Bournemouth screen 1. It was monster of sound system and to tell the truth I wasnt into cinema sound systems back then, but I could remember looking to left and right sides as parts of the eerier sounds of river dam sliding away near the last half the film. The Big One was nuts when it kicked in! I thought the ceiling would give way it was LOUD! Loud enough to tempt me to come back a few days later and a few more times some 4 times at 79pence a cinema ticket for BIG SOUND! I was unaware that it might cause mild tinnitus which I noticed some years later around 1978. I was 8 when I saw EARTHQUAKE and if I knew of the sound pressure risks I would have used earplugs!! So, I have mild tinnitus. I can still hear up to about 16KHz but the tone is very distant small narrow wavelength the rest of the tones below it get louder as their easier to hear. Anyhow point of thread what is the REAL SPL db of an EARTHQUAKE I find it hard to believe 120db! Sure the ground moves side to side and forwards and backwards swaying around and around till it STOPS! Im sure its an unpleasant experience! I doubt many would care to get an SPL db metre out when an EARTHQUAKE strikes for a few seconds? Its not one would do, (rather than get the hell of out of the house straight-away)! I know sound can pass though walls, shhh these walls have ears! Weve all heard that expression and yes its true some walls depending on how their made will transmit some sound though at given SPL db level and frequency varies, you might hear a muffed voices in the somewhere 500Hz to 2KHz or less when placing the ear against the wall. I dont think real EARTHQUAKES make 120db it was needed for cinema to get the sound pressure of frequencies pounding in audiences faces! But it has risks of hearing damage! So what if the cinema wants to cause a bit of structural damage that can be fixed! Tinnitus however cant be fixed! Last time I played EARTHQUAKE on DVD was a few years go chapter 8 and had the level up to 120dbc it was unpleasant to say the least! Unpleasant because I can since/feel that muffled like sound on the ear afterwards, its done no different I hope to what Ive been hearing ON and OFF over the years, but again it was unpleasant!! I just dont think a real quake will output in open air outside away from buildings 120dbc! I think its less and its the motion that one would feel.
  18. I guess some have seen Earthquake (1974) sensurround where the BIG ONE levels Los Angels! The film depicts it lasting just under 10mins! I thought that was Hollywood nonsense! Till I did a search and found under Answers an earthquake lasting 8mins! STUFF THAT!
  19. don't speak too soon. just saw this: LATEST UPDATE: Japan issues a state of emergency at a second nuclear power plant after its cooling system failed as thousands evacuate from the area near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant with radiation levels surging to 1,000 times their normal levels. There in lies the problem..... 1000 times their normal levels is still less than what you will get with a transcontinental flight. The limits imposed on nuclear facilities are less than many buildings. Grand Central Station in New York City would fail if they applied for a nuclear permit because the building emits too much radiation (Granite) How was I to know? Is there a higher power at work here? Havent they already gone though a enough! [] Isnt anyone thinking this Nostradamus 2012 might just come true now? I surely hope not. I have no idea what else is in store maybe California would sink into the ocean after 10.0 on the Richter scale hits lasting 5mins? Get out of California now why you can save yourselves I have strong gut feeling the BIG ONE IS COMING!
  20. Ive seen several broadcasts on BBC news yesterday morning and other news network channels at the pub during the afternoon. The horror of seeing water tons of water washing over Japan after devastating earthquake as tsunami consumes the lives of people and their homes swept away off there foundations as if they were made of wooden models, what a sad loss of life yesterday.[] Its a force of nature something we, can not control nor should we even make any attempts to control it! Its not the natural order of life! When an earthquake strikes get out of the way of it, straight away head for high grounds! Its a good thing the nuclear reactors shut-down otherwise it would be a total disaster with radiation fall out.
  21. I had to look in (my documents) as I couldnt find the original specs charts. I have the file saved but it only has the normal graph response charts. No polar response. They need to update the chats on their site. Cheers anyway
  22. What if I have hard understand of grasping how to follower the pattern, Ill just ask then. Okay Ill go and try and find one for what Im using. cheers
  23. Yeah to a degree its helped, Im kinder moving my fingers around while chewing on the pulsing sphere concept. cheers.
  24. I dont know much about paint expect there is oil based paint and water based paint. Water-based paint should come off easily with warm water and gentle rubbing. Oil-based I think you might have to break out the white-sprits! If its on plaster the paint should remove easily if water-based if its oil-based it might take a while. Id find out what paint you used last in the home. Water-based or oil-based! Chances are it might be water-based you used. Good luck
  25. Yes but the sensitivity of the K-horns must be high so the less power to reach within (you're listening distance) is acceptable at given SPL db until you want more and need a bigger amp to supply the power that's required for K-horns. "Less is more" [] I use maybe 6watts out the 150watt for the bass mid on my control 5 they have low 89db sen. I understand the higher the better which means the speaker might be bigger in size but I have small living room I don't need huge power for high SPL db just as long as tones are audible in the room.
