  1. I've read about this before but it's really true. My HK receiver and Emotiva amp are sounding much better than when I first bought them. I didn't use them regularly at first. Now I leave them on a few hours a day and they're finally developing a deeper, more full sound quality. I was finally able to get a nice sound stage by adjusting the various preamp volume settings. I thought I needed a different receiver but all I needed was patience.
  2. It's still a nice thought that your speakers are good enough to accurately reproduce distortion! I was just playing a crazy jazz album called "Free Jazz"--Ornette Coleman--and I hear a buzzing sound that was so realistic I thought it was coming from another room. I finally realized someone was making the sound on the album with some kind of instrument.
  3. I just received a record that was broken in half. It was packed in a stiff box so it must have required a good deal of force to do that kind of damage. The seller had a hard time believing me until I sent him a photo. I can't speculate about the cause because it leads me to ugly thoughts about intentional destruction.
  4. It has nothing to do with the phone or minutes. You're just using its memory to hold and play music files. The same thing can be done with an iPod or any media player that uses flash memory.
  5. I found a special 180 gram vinyl release of L. A. Woman on Amazon. These new releases were made from the master tapes using analogue equipment and the sound quality is unbelievable. I bought the first Doors album yesterday. I never heard it sound so good.--Deep bass and clean highs.
  6. I just played the album again. It's 180 gram vinyl. It must be a special release. Amazon may have it. It's strange because the songs were made from a compilation of 45s and are short. They're rereleasing many classic jazz recordings in 180 gram vinyl. I really like it. No warps and much harder to scratch. They're also coming down in price. Amazon has a large vinyl department with more jazz than I expected.
  7. I went to the main Best Buy in Fresno today. To my surprise, they closed down their "high end" rooms and sold off all the audio equipment in a liquidation sale. They also closed their instrument section where they sold electric guitars and amplifiers. As usual, the place was practically empty--few customers. This could be a local thing because the central valley of CA has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. I hope the store doesn't close because it's the last audio place in town. Circuit City went out as did Comp USA. Although, I couldn never figure how they were able to stay in business this long with Amazon selling the same items for a significant discount. I used to bring in my Iphone and check Amazon prices on units they had on sale. I did it today with a low end Pioneer multimedia receiver. Best buy sale price was about $550.00, Amazon price $100 less with free shipping. Their extended warranties are inflated in price. You can buy a Square Trade Warranty for much less. Their so called Geek squad is a joke. I brought a computer in to them a while ago and it wasn't repaired correctly. I brought it back three times until I gave up. A friend of mine knows computers very well and he told me that these Geek Squads are incompetent.
  8. It says "Limited Edition" on the album, whatever that means. I bought it at a place called Rasputen's. Rasputen took over Tower Records in the bay area of CA when they went out of business. Their San Francisco store has a better selection of jazz but you may be able to find it on their web site.
  9. When I lived near NYC, I used to go to the clubs like the Village Vanguard. Many new clubs have opened up over the years. It's a real experience to be so close to a good group. I remember a particular McCoy Tyner concert. He started playing and it sounded great, then the whole group started up, which included Reggie Workman on Bass. It's hard to describe the experience. I felt like my whole being just expanded. It's such a mystical thing, the way these guys can improvise and stay so tight. NYC has the best variety of jazz clubs. Some of them are cheap. I really miss that. Every time I visit, I try to hit a jazz club.
  10. Oh no. I'm hanging around.I still have much to learn. I want to be able to solder. I found a place that sells a cheap kit where you can put together a simple circuit. I've read up on soldering and it seems like somethings that takes years of practice to master. The thing you want to avoid is a "cold joint." I think the master technicians must be very proficient.
  11. I just picked up a new 2 record jazz set called Leapin' and Lopin' with Sonny Clark, Tommy Turrentine, Charlie Rouse, Butch Warren and Billy Higgens on Blue Note records. Incredible session with perfect fidelity. It was so realistic, I felt like I was at a jazz club. Brand new album on sale for $35. Words can't describe the genius of these musicians. Anyone into jazz? I like my KLF-30s more and more every day.
  12. I had a similar issue with one particular CD but it only happened for a few seconds. When I tried it on a completely different system, I heard the same distortion. So I attributed it to the particular pressing. When I play the same song on a record, I can hear the distortion if I listen hard, but it's much more subdued--it could easily be missed. The ironic thing is that the CD causing the problem is an expensive SHM.
  13. I want to thank everyone in this community. It has been a real education for me and everyone has been very generous sharing their knowledge. If I could name one thing I've learned that has had the most significance on my education, it would be the importance of the amplifier or receiver to the sound quality of Klipsch speakers. When I joined the forum, I knew nothing about this. You can't just hook up any crap amplifier to a speaker and expect the sound to be good. In fact, I've found that the better speakers are even more sensitive to an amplifier's shortcomings. All The Best, Seth
  14. Hello All, I'm a French film buff and am looking for a film called "Weekend" by Jean-Luc Godard on a Criterion pressing. Criterion makes high quality transfers of foreign and American films that have cultural or artistic significance. The New Yorker transfer in the following link is the only one available and is not close to the quality of the Criterion. (A used copy would be fine as long as it is in good shape.) Thanks for any help. http://tinyurl.com/grlff [Open in new window]
  15. I've had no experience with this service but a woman told me that "Satellite Direct" is excellent. I plan to try it soon and I'll let you know how it is. It's easy now to connect your computer to your TV. Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/4ygbjrv [Open in new window]
  16. When I look up equipment highly regarded my some forum members, they all have the same characteristic: A "tube like sound." It seems obvious that the "tube sound" goes very well with horn speakers. So I've gone in a circle and have to raise the question for myself: why not just but a tube Amp?
  17. This has probably been addressed before but I know several people in the community have a high regard for Luxman. I've never heard one and noticed that new models cost more than Mcintosh. So do they really sound better than Mcintosh? I could only afford a vintage Luxman which means adding several hundred to the already high selling price for refurbishing. I know it's subjective, but could someone describe the particular sound of a Luxman that makes it special?
  18. That's funny. Don't forget staying up all night doing that stuff because you have only have "one more thing" to do--wife yelling, "When are you coming to bed." Me yelling back, "If you didn't stay up so late, you wouldn't know I wasn't in bed." That's why I'm divorced. But seriously, I played The Allman Brothers Live at The Fillmore East yesterday. That album is a perfect example of how good records can get. No CD that I've ever heard can reproduce the full sound on the vinyl recording. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is a masterpiece of improvisation, IMHO. Imagine being there for that concert!
  19. That's a deal if I ever saw one. Congratulations! What a wonderful speaker. I was thinking yesterday how nice it would be if Klipsch would bring back some of their classic speakers like the KG line, and the KLFs. There's obviously a demand for them or they wouldn't be bid up so high on eBay. But in times like this, we're lucky to have what we have.
  20. That's my favorite also. It's beautiful.
  21. Yea, there was a time when girls were really into good rock music. I guess some still are. There's a Roy Harper interview in which he describes how all the girls in the audience were crying at a Led Zeppelin concert. I think it's on Youtube. http://tinyurl.com/3greqzd [Open in new window]
  22. "Presence" is an often overlooked and underrated album, IMHO. John Bonham's playing goes beyond words. It is probably their most personal album, written after a series of tragedies. The vinyl is a superb analogue recording. Get a good used copy, unless money is no object. The SHM CD is also excellent.
  23. Rick, On a second and third listening, I would go with a good used copy. The music sounds too much like a CD. It's good, but not worth the price. IMHO, you can get the same sound quality for a $10 Amazon CD. The record may have been pressed from a digitally remastered CD. It doesn't say anything on the album. I've really become skeptical these days. Unless it says pressed directly in analogue from the master tapes, I'm staying with old copies. This 200 gram vinyl craze is a new way to rip off the audiophile. We've got to stick together and demand analogue pressings. Seth
  24. That's amazing. The ARs aren't that efficient are they? When I was younger, my dream was to buy a pair of AR3As. But they were way out of my financial means. I bought a pair of KLH 6s instead which were still nice sounding bookshelf speakers.
  25. Here's my secret if you want to save money. Get the best CDs, (SHM if affordable) download them to iTunes in RAW format on your computer. (It uses more memory but the sound quality is worth it, IMHO.) Synch your iPhone to your computer. Get a Y wire from Radio shack--2 RCA connected to a 1/8 in. headphone jack. Plug it in to your iPhone or whatever you use. Play it through any input on your receiver. (I use tape input because my integrated amp. is vintage Sansui.) Very convenient and you never have to look for a missing or lost CD.
