  1. Nothing nicer on a cold night than the warm glow of a tube amp with great music. It's also literally nice to have the heat. On the extreme end, I avoid using my Scott 222c, with its very hot rectifier, when its warm outside as it tends to trigger the AC more often. In the winter it helps keep the furnace from cycling on as often.Has anyone used cooling for tube amps?
  2. Please share your experiance with the horn and fullranger. Or a thread if there was one. I am stuck in a very dull meeting and was wondering what that would sound like.
  3. My in at AK Fest flew the coup, too bad I was looking forward to it. The Full range driver is an Audio Nirvana Super 10, the woofers are Eminence Alpha 15A's The crossover on the Full ranger is a 1st order, the bass section is 3rd order. Dave Dave has asked me to make a change to the crossovers that he made for Justin and try them again. I will do that, but for now I am using the active crossover controls in Pure Music to make some observations. First the bass section will apparently go higher than 200 hz therefore the 3rd order filter makes sense to this amateur. The Audio Nirvana sounds almost the same with a 1st order as it does with a 4th order filter. I need to find out where it naturally rolls off. I listened to the AN straight for several songs and was impressed. But when you add the two 15s the low end is very detailed even where the harmonics extend to the AN. Tonight I listened to Beach Boys Pet Sounds. I knew that album was recorded with a wide array of instruments, everything from kettle drums to bassoons. Never before had I so easily picked put the sounds of these classical instruments that Brian used to create the tapestry which was laid down before the band returned from the road to add the vocals. These speakers are amazing and I haven't optimized their placement yet.

    DAMN!

Did somebody say capacitors? I know that subject could get the juices rolling.
  5. Back doing some after dinner listening and I am struck with the thought of how cohesive many instruments sound. So many of the harmonics seem to all emanate from the AN driver. Dave did you notice the side distance from the photo? I really don't have anywhere to stash the jub cabs so the placement was the best I could do. I tried them closer together but settled on a distance that seemed to give me a better image. Do you remember what the impedance of the AN driver and of the 2 15s? It took me 3 songs to write this, I am mesmerized.
  6. Well the Yields have arrived and unexpectedly I had time to fool with them today. I purchased a pair from Justin Weber complete with crossovers. I have drooled over these since this thread began. I had heard from the builder of my Jubilee clone cabs that full range drivers were the bomb. He thought so much so he abandoned a pair of Jub clone's in mid project and swore he would never finish them. Then this thread showed up. I didn't think I would own a pair this soon but when Justin offered to sell I jumped on it. Got them crated and shipped to Nashville and today I discovered I will not be disappointed. Bass galore, imaging, sparkle and that Audio Nirvana midrange. Looking forward to positioning and active crossover tweaking.
  7. It's usually the other way around. Damping factor seems to be one difference. SS generally have more for better bass. I think.
  8. it's always a poignant topic though After all some of us may have missed it and the newbies need to learn and understand.
  9. Ok, now you have gone and done it. Everyone knows there is no difference in salad forks. Bread plates on the other hand have been shown to have significant size differences given their diameter. IMHO
  10. Forget about it! Completely normal. In my book if you have put your ear up to the speaker to hear it your system is quiet. Having fought these battles I would chime in that if you cannot hear the noise floor from your listening position its quiet enough and whatever is there that you cannot hear is not going to have an impact on SQ. My setup got so quiet that the tape hiss from the masters began to be noticeable, but as soon as the band began you never again noticed it, even during parts when the band was playing very softly. When the song ended and the next one started I would again notice the tape noise because the tape hiss went away briefly before the next song started.
  11. Mustang Guy, Thanks again for your schematic. I found these to use http://www.parts-express.com/banana-5-way-speaker-wire-binding-post-terminal--260-301 So I will use one pair out to speakers, then three more for the amps. The rotary switch will work out fine. I love the isolation feature of not accidently having two amps on at the same time.
  12. Thanks. I think this could work except I would be switching speaker signals from the amps so I would need banana female terminals instead of RCAs
  13. Thanks for the attempted aid to my problem. But I may have misled you and maybe others. Let me try again. The amps sources can stay static and I can make them quiet from the sound card. The Niles SPK-1 is really a good solution that limits me to ABX two amps and that's ok. I will just use it in reverse.
  14. One - I probably posted this in the wrong forum. Two - Yours is a great idea. Do you get any pops or clicks when switching? Thanks I have switched "under power" as I have always had it programmed with delays.Sorry, I have NEVER switched under power Thanks. But this now begs the question can you leave an amp on with no speakers connected? I have been using banana plugs and plugging and unplugging the speakers to make the change while leaving them powered on. I was hoping to find a solution that would allow me to fast switch back and forth. fortunately the amps have their sources fed in parallel from the sound card so no amp source switching is needed.

  16. How could I adapt this for my amp source selector connected to one pair of speakers? Thanks
  17. Thanks! But as I think about this I realize its more complicated than I thought. I have three pair of stereo outfuts from the sound card where I have trimmed the levels so there is no SPL difference from the speakers when I switch between the three amps. So what I need to be able to do is switch between the amp outputs to one set of speakers. I apologize to all that have read this thread. I should have thought it out before I posted the question.
  18. Oh boy. What da think? http://www.ackthud.net/shawnfogg/pics/temp/ABX_manual.pdf
  19. I had a thought that a speaker selector switch could be used in reverse. Crazy?
  20. How much of what we pay goes toward bubble wrap?
  21. I took my Jubilee two way offline for a while until my Yields arrive. My KEF monitors are delightful but now I am running passive and as such my sound card has six channels of output so I could drive three amps. I adjusted the trims and now my three amps AVA Synegy 220, ampsandsound, com Stereo 15, and Manley GY50 can be compared with no gain differences. But I would like a high quality switch so that I could quickly go between the amps to hear differences. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.
  22. For what its worth I would maintain that buy it Made in the USA. There are some great builders here and a couple are forum members. They are highly motivated to make you happy and their quality is fine. Also, don't think that you won't want to swap, upgrade or change for the fun of it. As my wife put it, its cheaper than a exotic sports car and better than a mistress. So no guilt here. All pleasure. Enjoy,
  23. Why not use a pair and trim. Or trim of one is too large.
