  1. Wow, that looks fantastic! What is the display for in the upper right?
  2. I had a minor accident concerning my RC-64 when I was trying to move some things around to test my RC-62 before I sold it. I had it in my hand and my thumb slipped and I pushed on the woofer, and it made a fairly minor dent in the woofer. I sent a picture off to klipsch tech support, and they claimed it should have no impact on the sound quality now, or in the future, and I can not hear any different in sound which is good. However, I am very disapointed with myself and a little upset with what I did, so I also asked the Klipsch Tech Support about selling me a woofer, and they do have replacement woofers available. For someone who has never replaced one of these, or even opened up a speaker, would you guys consider it worth my while to buy the woofer and replace it myself? Also if anyone has any advice or an article on undertaking a project like this, that would be helpful as well
  3. You should still check the places like audiogon. A lot of times, people still have stuff that is new and never opened. It can never hurt.
  4. I enjoyed how the website had a retail price of 0.00 for the RF-82 system that was crossed out, with the 510 right under it. I would rather take the 0.00 price . I have have been getting lucky, because in the last few months, I have bought used speakers from three different people, and each time has been just a fantastic experience talking with others. And the amount I paid for these speakers is ridiculously low compared to what I would have spent had I bought new, from anywhere. I would keep an eye on Audiogon and try and be patient. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a pair of RF-7ii's for just a few hundred more than you would spend on a pair of RF-82ii's or even a pair of used RF-83's would usually run you about the same as a pair of new RF-82ii's and both are a lot more speaker. And if you are feeling lucky, people have found some amazing deals on Craigslist. Sometimes people don't know the worth of what they have, so they put a steal up. I am inclined to agree with Subxero as well on the seperates. Just keep an eye out and consider going used, as you will most definitely get a lot more bang for your buck. The $3,000 you wanted to spend could very easily turn into a $6,000 system and would be much more future proof and save even more money in the future, not to mention keeping you from getting the upgrade fever and the "what if's". I say it all the time, and it would have saved me a ton of money if I did it first, but you should spend some time at a brick-and-mortar store and listen to the speakers enough till you know what you are looking for, and keep an eye out for deals on used stuff. Keep an eye on your local craigslist ads. The Garage Sale thread on this forum usually has some very good prices in it. Audiogon.com has a ton of stuff. There are some forums at avsforum.com for selling and buying. And I have also been keeping an eye on the Emporium forum at Emotiva.com, they seem to have some pretty good stuff there. If it's been a while and you still can't find anything, post a wanted ad on the garage sale thread here. I just put a wanted up for some RS-62s, was quickly contacted by celsoguim who had some new in box at an excellent price, and he has been an absolute pleasure to deal with. I think you will be surprised at what you can find with a little patience.
  5. Haha yeah, I would get the audio rack fixed as well! That thing goes down, and you are going to be in the market for a lot more than an avr/sub upgrade.
  6. This thread should be renamed to speaker porn
  7. I would grab a pair of RF-82ii's. They might be about 40$ above your price range, but your center would match them great.
  8. Oh man, I forgot about Shoot em Up. That movie is over the top ridiculous, but in a good way.
  9. Shake, i think I will be contacting you when you get your XMC to see what you are offering
  10. That would have been a ridiculously good deal! Someone got lucky
  11. Yes and thanks. That is what I was hoping to hear. I really wish there was more 7.1 content so we can't start worrying about things like the front wides and front height channels instead. There is always new stuff to consider.
  12. When the XMC-1 starts hitting the shelves, do you guys think the market will be flooded with cheap UMC-1s, because of the huge discount being offered to current UMC-1 owners? Like all others, I am considering getting a UMC-1 and will probably keep it NIB just so I can get the 40% discount off the XMC-1. With the discount , I am looking at 899$ for the XMC-1. If I can manage to sell the UMC-1 for 399.99 because of the fact that it is still new in box and factory sealed, I am then looking at 500$ for the XMC-1.
  13. I may have missed it, and if I did, I missed it twice, but what's it called? And what is the website?
  14. I am wondering how Dolby PLIIz works from a source that is DTS-MA. Or does it change depending on the AVR or pre/pro? Or even how PLIIx would work on a source that is DTS-MA, or even DolbyHD for that matter? If it transcodes it, is the audio still considered lossless? If the AVR is downmixing the audio to stereo and then duplicating the left and right channels to left and right surrounds and heights, it seems like there would be a huge loss of audio quality and it technically wouldn't be "true surround". This question I guess is pretty technical, but I think it has the ability to effect a lot of home theater enthusiasts. Edit: I found one thread on AVS that had the same question, but it turned into a Front Heights vs Front Wides vs Rear Surrounds thread and I don't believe the original question ever got answered. There was one person who claimed PLIIz can piggy back on a DTS-MA or DolbyHD signal and use algorythms to determine what will be sent to the front heights and/or rear surrounds. Maybe I'll have to give Dolby a call to confirm.
  15. I usually prefer to do a bitstream on the source, and set the AVR to Direct. Then I make sure on the disc settings to select the highest quality transfer, usually DolbyHD or DTS-MA for Blu-Ray. That way I am hearing the audio exactly as I am supposed to be hearing it according to the mixing engineers, or whatever their official job title is. I've tried pure direct on the avr, but that bypasses the speaker settings I setup in the AVR, and I don't think it sounds quite as good because of the slightly differing sensitivities and distances of the speakers. It also gives me some peace of mind that I am hearing the correct audio track because the display on my AVR actually says DolbyHD or DTS-MA. If memory serves me correctly, all PLIIx should be doing is simulating a 5.1 channel setup based off the 2 channels of sound it is getting from the source. In a 5.1 setup, it duplicates the two surrounds into the rear surrounds to create a full 7.1 ch environment. Depending on your AVR, multichannel may just be duplicating the fronts and copying them to the surround and rear surrounds if you have them with no extra processing, so essentially, all speakers are playing the exact same thing, depending if they are on the left or right. I would imagine that would be better for listening to music, but for movies that are in stereo, I would think PLIIx would be your best bet. However, as I said before, having DolbyHD or DTS-MA (or Dolby Digital, Dolby+, etc...) would still be better yet for movies, as every speaker would be doing something different. Long story short, I suggest using Dolby PLIIx only for movies that are being played in stereo. I may be wrong completely though, this is from memory and I would love to hear from someone who has a bit more knowledge on the subject, so I can get my facts straight, especially concerning how Dolby PLIIx would work in a 7.1 channel system with a source being played in stereo.
  16. I thought I seen an option on the blu-ray player for smartphone apps. I watched the Dark Knight last night, and in the very opening shot when it is zooming in on the first building, there is another whiter building to the left. I used to get extremely bad jitters/jaggies on that building for some reason. For a while I thought it was the AutoMotion Plus on the TV doing it, and I never really bothered to fix it, but with the new player, that seems to all worked out, so I am a very happy camper. For a while I was having a lot of problems with the Share Hub. It would always say there was an update needed and it would go to the update screen indefinitely. It would also keep telling me I had no network connection, but the network status said everything was fine. When that happened, the only way to fix it was to turn the unit on and off again, but since, I have reset the unit back to factory settings and reconfigured everything and now it works flawlessly. Only wish is they had more music apps. I am not a huge fan of Pandorah. I have recently taken a liking to iHeartRadio, their Classic Rock station is amazing. For those having problems with the unit though, just hold down the stop button on the player for about 8 seconds and it will reset itself. It was extremely helpful.
  17. Just upgraded my Magnavox NB500MG9. I think this was the cheap entry model of the entry models or the first line of blu-ray players released. I went to Best Buy to, unsuccessfully I might add, find a set of speaker wall mounts and seen a Samsung BD-D6500 open item for 99$. Was able to talk them down to 60$ due to it having a lack of a remote. I figured with a little luck, through Samsung's AnyNet, my TV remote would better serve as a blu-ray remote anyway and it did. Anyway, onto the point. Because of the huge upgrade from my old one, obviously I am extremely happy with it, though I realize it isn't an Oppo. I just couldn't pass up a chance to see what I could get the Samsung for. I still would eventually like an Oppo BDP-93. I am wondering if anyone around here has any experience with this or the 6700 model. This seems like a pretty good blu-ray player I could live with, but if there are more leaps and bounds to be had with the Oppo, I think I can still fit it into my budge sometime soon. I cant afford it now but I see a BDP-93 for 405$ shipped over at AVS. Seems like a pretty good deal.
  18. Love Serenity! I think I am going to have a Firefly marathon once I get my surrounds in now.
  19. Really, I will definitely have to buy those. 16$ is well worth the money if it means they stay in better. I swear there is something wrong with my ear canals as I can't get anything to stay. We have some extremely annoying yappy dogs that come pretty close to losing their lives every night because of the non-stop barking and I can't get any ear plugs to stay in either. They just fall out the second I move.
  20. It probably defeats the purpose of going FLAC, but I use a program called TVersity. It is free and open source and seems to work very well. What it does is it acts like a server on your home network, and it pretty much sets itself up. All you have to do is install. Once installed, it transcodes pretty much any format of music or video into something usable depending on what device you are using to play it. I use a Xbox 360 to play it and it seems to work out extremely well. It can also be played with a PS3 and Wii, and a ton of others They are also currently working on integrating an open-source version of AirPlay. Not sure if it will be backwards-compatible with AirPlay, but definitely something very interesting. I run it on my laptop and once I installed it, I pretty much forgot about it. It automatically searches whatever folders you want it to for music and videos. Check it out here It obviously won't be as good as getting a BDP-95, but for it being free, you won't have anything to lose for trying it out. There are also devices that you can buy that plug into a USB port on your computer and act as a really nice soundcard you might be interested in as well. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the company that makes them, but I am sure someone around here can remember. I just seen it about a week ago in another thread. Be sure to check out these RF-82ii as well. That is the same seller I bought my speakers from and he was a super nice guy. He says there is a ding on them about the size of a bb, but for that price, I think I could look past that.
  21. Welcome to the forums! What you have sounds great, though I would put more serious consideration into deciding between the RF-7ii and RF-82ii. You should start off by visiting a klipsch dealer if there is one around you, and having a good listen. Judging from your prices, you are planning on paying retail (or close to it) for everything. I think you would be happier to wait it out and see what kind of deals come up for the RF-7ii. You may end up only paying 300-400 more and get a much better pair of speakers. The only problem is you really should get the RC-64ii to match the RF-7ii, but again, you could probably get one for close to the price you were planning on spending on the RC-62ii. You should also look more into the receiver. It's rated at 140w per channel, but that usually isn't the case. I think you would be happier with something like http://app.audiogon.com/listings/onkyo-tx-sr876-thx-ultra-plus-ii and spend the extra 1000$ you save on an amp like the Emotiva XPA-3 to get your 3 fronts going for now which is what will need the extra power the most. Depending on where you go with the fronts, I know the RF-7ii's will really enjoy the extra power you can get form an amp. My RF-83s did for sure, and they are a pretty comparable speaker to the RF-7ii. That is really just an example, but what you should know and consider is buying things new at retail. Awesome deals can be had if you can wait it out and keep checking audiogon.com. You could potentially turn a 4,000$ system you paid 4,000$ for into an 8,000$ system you paid 4,000$ for. Just gotta keep an eye out. And a lot of people here are very happy to help out on the search. I wish you the best of luck with your home theater stuff! Edit: I am still seeing a PAIR of RF-82ii's on audiogon.com for 650$. Another Edit: A member on this forum is selling the RC-62ii for 300$ in the Garage Sale thread, though it may have already been sold.
  22. Congrats on the new TV! That was a hell of a deal you got on that! I have always been a huge fan of Samsung. I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to their plasma stuff, but from what I seen at BB, I do know what you are talking about when you say fluid. The refresh rate on them is crazy! I have an LN46A650 I got about 3 years ago and I gotta say I have been most impressed with Samsung TVs. The colors just seem more vibrant and the ToC Red I think goes fairly well with Cherry speakers. When is movie night? I just got a new popcorn popper I need to test out.
  23. I have heard they really need a good burn-in. You will probably need to go as far as having the volume at 75% for about 40 hours. I would just hook them up, turn the volume up on whatever you have them hooked up to, and leave them on overnight. Let me know if this helps. I have the image s4 which are pretty good for a 100$ pair of ear buds, but I find myself constantly readjusting when I am running, so I have considered buying the Mode40.
  24. Good luck! Let me know how you like going from the AVR to the UMC-1. I am currently on the fence about that as well. For now, my Pioneer is getting by. I think it was one of their first model that had support for Dolby HD and DTS MA so it probably is about time for an upgrade. It sounds like you got a pretty good deal on that. I am thinking you might have to do some tinkering with the UMC-1 when you do get everything hooked up. With that much more power running to your center, it might just put everything else you have to shame. I know when I first got mine and before I recalibrated the AVR, it was all I could hear. Also, we wanna see some pictures when you get it setup!
  25. That would be a very good way of trying to sell the idea of having a home theater and justifying lots of speaker purchases to the Mrs. Un/fortunately I am Mrs-less or I probably wouldn't be here right now I would love to see it, but now my HT funds are running low. Have a car insurance and more student loans then usual this month to pay. Hopefully will be back in action by the end of next month. Maybe sooner if I can figure out a way to sell these Icons. I know they aren't great speakers, but I have been getting some crazy low-ball offers. Someone said he would give me 50$ for them, but didn't have a way to pick them up. By the time I got to where he lived, I would have spent more money in gas. I don't think these people really realize what they are asking sometimes If you do find that picture, I would love to see!
