  1. I'm using a Panamax 1500. Due to wife's insistance on bundling cables (for looks), I'm always fighting hum problems. The Panamax has greatly reduced this situation. Regards, Chris PS Anyone else have bundled cables? If so, what are your experiences? ------------------ click below to see my rig http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html
  2. jazman, Recently, I found myself in very similar situation to yours. Long story short, I went with a Benz Micro Ace (red) because of the upgrade path availability. The Ace comes in three output levels to accomodate just about any phono stage. Listened to quite a few carts before realizing no cart was going to sound in my system like it sounded at audition. You're so close to both Musical Surroundings and Sumiko maybe they could offer some direction. Vinyl equipment choices in Southern California can be scarce. Most of the high end vinyl boys down here want you to make an appointment and probably charge a "co-payment". However, they do offer a cold beverage and free rolfing while listening. 3. dndphishin, I used Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish on the knobs and faceplate (use small amounts). Came out spotless. Can't say enough about Masa at Accutech. He probably isn't the one to talk to about modifications, but knows these units inside and out. Mine improved noticeably after he serviced it. Good Luck, Chris ------------------ click below to see my rig http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html
  4. Since acquiring the vinyl habit, I've been going to some of the higher end audio "salons" in my area looking for various supplies (record cleaning fluid, rice paper sleeves, outer sleeves, strobe disc, etc.). Not to mention yesterday I was in the warehouse/offices of Classic Records picking up an order. Every place I've been to, the conversation inevitably turns to "What's your rig?". When I get to the Cornwall part, there is always a kind of surprised, "what?" look on the faces. At a few of the places I've even taken the time to listen to a some setups. I have to admit, some of the stuff I've listened to sounds very sweet. Quiet, yet loud, big soundstage, lots of depth, etc. Most of this stuff is fairly high dollar equipment. B&W, Avalon, Vandersteen, Dunlavy, Meadowlark speakers powered by ARC, Krell, Levinson, etc. Most of them hooked up with fairly exotic and I'm sure expensive cabling. Anyway, just about everyone tells me "Klipsch are great, but..." followed by a statement that usually includes "too forward", "too bright", "hurts my ears", "PA like" or something along those lines. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Cornwalls. But...are there other ways to skin this audio cat? Some of the rigs I've heard are much more delicate than mine and somewhat more effortless to listen to. What would I miss if I defected to the dark side? Am I just falling for audio "salon" BS? Let me know what you think. Regards, Chris PS Don't beat me up, I'm not trying to stir the pot. Just curious. ------------------ click below to see my rig http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html
  5. There's a mail order place out of Arizona that has been selling them for $239.00 on eBay for almost a year now. Take look and give them a call. I got mine for $239.00, tax and freight included. They sound great. Chris ------------------ click below to see my rig http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html
  6. dndphishin, You're gonna love the T-101. Like many have said, to get the best reception you need a good (not necessarily expensive) antenna. I've had the best results with a $10.00 Radio Shack set of TV "Rabbit Ears". I tried a MD Signal Sleuth, various cheaper signal amplifiers (Radio Shack, Terk, etc.) and none has done the job like the ears. You might want to have it serviced as it is almost 30 years old. The only US Accuphase authorized service center is Accutech in Gardena, CA. It happens to be 10 minutes from were I live and I've been there a few times. It's run by an ex long time Accuphase builder from Japan (Masa) and his son. In fact the odds are Masa likely built your unit. It'll probably cost $60.00-70.00 to have him completely go through your unit. Anyway, there are many top notch service guys out there like Mike Z. and a few others. 7. Ray, Thanks for the tip. And I apologize for making it appear in my post that I only noticed this bass situation while using my tuner. I've also noticed it with my tt and cdp. Anyway, after receiving a record I had ordered (LA 4, "Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte", Nautilus pressing), I tried your suggestion. Sure enough, you were right. Bass response does change substantially as I change location. Now I know where to be when I want to best hear ol' Ray Brown do his thing. BTW, this album is a fantastic recording. 8. Yesterday I was listening to my tuner and noticed something that puzzled me. The jazz station (KLON Long Beach, CA) was playing some quartet music. When it was time for the bass run it seemed as though some notes were more audible than others. The sound was strong on lower notes, then seemed to weaken as the player went up the scale, to a point again farther up the scale where the sound seemed to get stronger again. Was I hearing "boom" on the lower notes? Is this some sort of "hole" in my system. What gives? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Chris PS You can check my system by clicking the link below. ------------------ http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html This message has been edited by cjk1026 on 06-27-2002 at 10:45 AM
  9. HDBRbuilder, Is it possible that, "First...there IS NO SUCH THING AS A HERESY I.... just Heresy, and Heresy II...LOL!", is a tad bit harsh? C'mon, many people here refer to Cornwall's manufactured (very beautifully by you and your coworkers I might add) before the advent of the Cornwall II as the Cornwall I. I think we all know what NOS440 is referring to when he writes of a Heresy I. The fact that you have contributed massively (And I do mean massively.) to this board does get you some slack, but give a guy a break. Please dont flame me Chris ------------------ http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html
  10. dndphishin, There's plenty of info available on tuners. Try - Tuner Info Page It's a great source of information on tuners, new and old. I've tried many different units (Mac, Yamaha, Fisher, Sony, Magnum, etc.) and so far my favorite is a 20 something year old Accuphase T-101. I paid $16.00 for it at a swap meet and had it tuned up by Accutech for another $60.00. My friends have a/b'd it against some pretty expensive competition (Mac MR78 & 80, MD Etude, Marantz 2130 to name a few.) and it sounds better than them all. I also have a 1968 Sony 5000FW that is very nice too. Both of these units would cost many thousands of dollars today if built with the same quality and workmanship. Good Luck Chris ------------------ http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html
  11. Midwest Hornies, You're going to really enjoy spending time with Dr. Edgar. His patience and knowlege are a rare treat. If he brings "Subzilla", you are really in for it. We in Southern California are fortunate to have him in residence here. Dr. Edgar is a perfect example of Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation". BTW I have many cousins in the Chicago area who for years talked about the sound made by the organ at the old Chicago Stadium. Are pipes similar to horns for sound reproduction? Can someone explain the priciples? This organ was a beast. Here is a link to it: Chicago Stadium Barton Organ ------------------ http://cgi.AudioAsylum.com/systems/2235.html This message has been edited by cjk1026 on 06-18-2002 at 08:23 AM
  12. Rowoo, I had a MMF1.2 for a couple of weeks and noticed the felt mat problem (sticking to records) you spoke of. I zapped the mat with a Zerostat gun I use on my records and it stopped happening. Some of the above posts talk about antistatic devices. You might want to try one. Although I must admit feeling kinda stupid using an antistatic gun. Standing there, pointing the "gun", nothing visual happening and my 8 year old son asks, "Dad, what are you doing?". I reply, "Going off the deep end son.". 14. As far as setup/stylus care is concerned, Turntable Basics was a big help for me. http://www.turntablebasics.com/ Supposedly, record cleaning is only necessary when a record is dirty. I know that sounds simplistic, but most knowlegeable people I have talked with tell me that playing a record is the best way of keeping it clean. And so far, it seems to be right on. A few of the older/dirty records that I have cleaned (I bought a used Nitty Gritty), greatly improved after repeated playing on my tt. However, I do use a carbon fiber record brush and a Zerostat anti static gun. 15. Kelly, The Clearaudio mods to the RB250st include: stem - stainless steel instead of stock plastic (same thing for fasteners) arm - stainless steel instead of stock metal wiring - "Six Stream" German made internal and external (about $550 per meter retail for the interconnects) Counterweight - upgraded stainles steel w/offset center hole with adjustment Supposedly, and I'm sure I couldn't tell, this arm is way hot. Long story how I ended up with it. Was supposed to get a RB300 with "Quint Wiring". The distributor was closed for almost a month (They went to a hifi show in Germany, then to factory visits at Clearaudio and Benz.) without telling the retailer the RB300 was back ordered. In order to keep me happy, when they returned I was offered the RB250st they had brought back from Germany. It sounds pretty good to me. BTW, I got a clear plinth (WAF). Regards, Chris PS The main difference between the 250 & 300 is the spring adjustment in the 300. Some people say the 250 is better off without it. All other parts of my 250st are 300 quality or better. 16. Kelly, I got the basic Champion. I had my choice of a Rega RB300 or a hopped up RB250ST arm (Six Stream wiring internal and external, new counterweight, rear stub and fastening device). I chose the 250ST after reading up on arms. It seems you can tweak up the 250 to quite a high level of performance. Some people think higher than a RB300, 600, or 900 can go. Take look at the link I pasted at the bottom of this message. Clearaudio incorporates many of the same principles in their upgraded Rega arms. I plan on upgrading to Champion level 1 or 2 as soon as my wife and budget allow. 17. Eq Shadimar, I recently took delivery of a somewhat expensive (For my budget anyway.) TT. While I was waiting for it to arrive from the distributor, my retailer gave me a Music Hall MMF1.2 as a loaner. I very nearly canceled my order for the $2,000+ Clearaudio. No BS. The MMF sounded fabulous. Way better than my $1,000 cdp when compared A/B using identical selections. Not to mention it was a fairly beat up floor demo. The Clearaudio does however, take it to another level. $2,000 higher, I'm not so sure. Supposedly you can find a MMF1.2 for less than $200.00. I say, go for it. 18. KRB, From what I'm told, things have gotten worse since 1984. Much more use of synthesized musical instruments, digital recording, etc., etc. Don't get me wrong, I've got some buckage invested in cd's, my player, and interconnects, and I still listen to them. It's just that, ever since I got my tt, the superior sound of vinyl has been undeniable. I agree the author of the "paper" is on a little bit of a rant. However, there is some logic hidden in there. 19. Interesting you should bring up their statement about live music. This weekend I was at my 8 year old son's piano recital. It happened to be held at the home of the dirty rotten scoundrel that first introduced me to the realm of audiophilia. While we were listening to the performances (do re mi, Puff The Magic Dragon, etc.), he commented to me "...nothing like live music...". And damn, if he wasn't right! It occured to me right then that I was more interested in the sound quality than the musical performance. 20. While surfing through various Yahoo audio groups, I stumbled on the following link: http://www.anstendig.org/CDandDig.html It's a fairly heavy handed paper on why (the author feels) cd is inferior in audio quality to analog. There are other informational papers available on the home page, located here: http://anstendig.org/ Can somebody read, digest, and comment on this? 21. I'm having so much fun with my tt, a thought popped in to my mind about reel to reel tape decks. Some questions: 1. Are reel to reel tape decks still being manufactured? If so, who's making them? 2. Who's are the best quality? Who's are the best buy? Where to look? 3. Can you easily record vinyl to tape? If so, generally speaking, how does it sound? How 'bout compared to cd? What equipment do you need to do this? 4. Last question...Am I totally losing it? Is this what OCD looks like? Why can't I just throw in some cd's and be done with it? 22. DeanG, As I stated in my first post on this thread, my loaner tt was a $200.00 Music Hall. It sounded wonderful. Way better than my $1,000 cdp. With your listed rig all you'd need is a decent tt, like phono stage, and some reasonable cable. You'd be on your way. I bet you could get a real good taste of vinyl for less than $300-400 tops. Just remember what has been stated here and everywhere else, the records need to be clean, quality recordings. And lastly, be careful, vinyl can ruin you for cd listening. I find myself more concerned in the sound quality than the actual musical performance...help me....... 23. C&S, I'm guessing the human ear will not decipher between the exact same sound produced either digitally or otherwise. However, I also believe there is more to this issue. For example, when I first got the computer I'm using now, I was pretty happy with the video display. Then a friend of mine who is far more knowledgeable in such things adjusted the refresh rate of my monitor. Wow, what a difference. The display looked exactly the same, but somehow it was much more pleasing to look at. It seemed to help my eyes relax. There was less eyestrain. He explained that there was now more video information being utilized than before. Is it possible that an analog recording has more information? Are there compromises made when reproducing a musical performance digitally? Are there limits to digital reproduction and playback that analog does not share? I really don't know, but I kinda think so. It sure sounds like it. 24. MD - You brought up some excellent points. I could easily agrue with either side on this issue. (analog/digital) It's just that I've experienced the diferences now. I have to say, from what I've heard so far, analog sounds more like a accurate reproduction of a musical performance than does digital. That being said, just like there is a market for "... an artist who had taken great color photographs of the area's charm and then ran them through a PhotoShop watercolor filter and printed them out on watercolor paper...", there's nothing wrong with liking digital sound better. In fact, my wife's grandfather was a semi-famous artist who would paint 4'x5' photo negatives and then develop them for sale. They looked great. Were they accurate reproductions of the original subjects? Of course not. They were never supposed to be. I guess for me, it just comes back to an accurate as possible reproduction of a musical performance. I think it's the grooves. Isn't digital, by definition, finite? Whereas analog is not?
