  1. the definitive collection louis armstrong 2006 label: hip-o/verve
  2. Hi All I have an opportunity to pick up a audion sterling amp. Im curious if anyone here might have any insight, knowledge or experience with this amp. I auditioned it and thought it sounded really really nice. Its not a brand I am familiar with, though I have found a few good reviews for it. I'd be interested in hearing if any of you are familiar with audion. This would be my first tube amp. I'll be running it to a pair of cornwall II's with a emotiva umc- 1 in front of it. I listen almost exclusively through airplay/apple tv I stream a lot through MOG. Im curious if there will be noticeable improvement with tubes given my current set up. At some point Ill add a good cd player and maybe a turntable. For now though its hard to beat the ease and economy of this set up. Thanks in advance for your reply
  3. I was on your site this week. Nicely done! I am really interested in your amps. As a new owner of a pair of vintage Cornwalls Im dying to get some tubes in my set up. Best of luck
  4. Well I hear what you're saying..... I've decided to send them into Bob. I'd really like to give it a shot myself and gain the experience and skill but at the same point I don't really want to mess em up and end up having to buy a new set either. Thanks for your input I would have dove in with out and very likely would have regretted it.
  5. Happy monday Just wanted to see if any members might have any recommends on a good shop? Im familiar with saturday audio exchange but wanted to see if there were any other shops worth checking out? Im really interested in buying a tube amp and would be cool with looking at used. I work downtown but live west of the city in the fox valley area, Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia, Aurora, Naperville...... I was in Peoria over thanksgiving and visited a great shop, EDI. The guys were really cool and had a lot of great gear to audition. They had a great vibe going, I stopped in on a saturday and guys were coming in chilling, enjoying a scotch and great tunes. Got me thinking that there has to be such a place somewhere in my neck of the woods. If anyone has any leads on a cool shop out my way let me know, curious to know.
  6. so I opened up the CW IIs last weekend to take a peek at which crossover is in there, i guess the II's came with 2 different versions. Bob said he would need to know which were present to be able to supply me with correct parts for a rebuild kit. I discovered I have the covers that mount to the back of the input cup. I also discovered there is no fiberglass or dampening material present. Is that to be expected? Anyway I contacted Bob to order the rebuild kit at which time I asked him if the parts would come with any kind of instruction. Answer is no and he did let me know that it is possible to ruin the pc boards if one isn't careful while soldering. I am by no means an expert with a soldering iron. So I am looking for a bit of insight and advise from those that have done a crossover rebuild. Can anyone point me to a source for instructions on removing/disconnecting the xovers? As well as how to execute the rebuild itself? My other thought is to just send Bob the crossovers for an extra $50 bucks and not stress about the chance of frying the boards. But with 4 kids, an anniversary in a week and the holidays approaching $50 bucks has a bit more value than normal. I think I might have Bob replace the tweeter diaphragms while he's at it. Figure if the corn walls are down I may as well make it count. I hate to have them sitting there inoperable though parly why I wanted to attempt the surgery myself..... less down time. anyways thanks for your time, consideration and input. cheers
  7. Were these in your cornscalas? or your cornwalls? I thought you just got your cornscalas. How are you digging em btw?
  8. thanks for the music fidelity tip..... I'll look into them.
  9. it kind of depends on what Ive ingested and the amount but on most days the answer is...... maybe
  10. so how big of a project am I looking at to get inside these guys, remove the original crossovers for the rebuild? How about switching the tweeters diaphrams to the titanium? Did Shakey get his new crossovers in play yet? How do they sound? Happy Thanksgiving all
  11. Haha Dean .... Um ahhh ..... I mean sorry Pete Awkward
  12. Pete have you done any mods on your II's? (Sorry, if you already mentioned in this thread) I'd love to build a pair of cornscala's down the road.
  13. a lot of great food for thought..... Rhig thanks for sharing the info on the little 6 watt like I said I'm going to look into it sounds like a really fun experiment. Pete thanks for the fastrac info. I thought I saw somewhere that they would work with II's. I have noticed some discussions about placing the mids and tweeters on top of the cabinets which does seem interesting to me from an isolation stand point but my only question there is on what effect does this have on the imaging, time alinement, coherence and phasing? In my mind I assume that the original size, placement of drivers and speakers along with spacial relationships were all carefully considered when PWK designed the speakers. This is one reason that I have always been really interested in Bob's cornscala design. Seems like a improvement on what was by combining the best characteristics of two tried and true designs as opposed to a complete redesign. Anyone heard a pair of CW with mids and tweeters on top? My favorite speakers that I own are a pair of Tannoy super red monitors. They too have 15" woofers but they have a coaxial design with the tweeters placed in the center of the woofer. I've always thought that was where their magic came from. I have these at my studio and I credit them as to what lead me to pursuing the cornwalls at my home. Though they are different beasts I felt like the CW's might come close to offering what I like about the tannoys and I'd say they are close. Finally Dean thanks for your responses. I really appreciate your thoughts on listening to music, very cool. This is a cool community, thanks to everyone that has taken the time to chime in with their thoughts and experiences. I've enjoyed the discussion. Can't think of another place where I can discuss my obsession without being dismissed as an obsessive? Know what I mean.....
  14. Dean, I have to say that is great advice on how to approach the crossover! I think I'll do that...... buy the rebuild kit from crites to start with and follow with a ALK design and get to hear both.
  15. Hmmmmm at $6 what the heck..... Pass on the info sounds like fun. How did you modify it? Yeah the adcom is old and basically it was a donation as well. I just have to figure out what I move to next. As i said earlier Im a fan of Mr. Pass but even on the used market his stuff is a bit out of my price range probably. Ive had my eye on a couple emotive mono blocks in my area. I've been happy with my umc-1 from them.
  16. Hey Muel, I've recently seen the fastrac horns mentioned. Im fairly certain that they can be put into the II's. Have you heard them? Im real curious if they would make a noticeable difference.
  17. Hey guys, thanks for all your responses. Im fairly certain that the first mods I'll make are the tweeters and crossovers. I did have some correspondence with Bob Crites, whom I do consider an expert, he did say that the crossovers were good for about 20 years. That said I'm probably a bit overdue. I am curious if anyone with experience with or that has heard both the crites and the ALK crossovers had any insights. As far as the amp goes, Ive been pretty happy with the adcom gfa 2535 but it too is getting along in years. I originally went through 2 newer yamaha avr's with my RF 82's before settling on the Adcom, it was night and day. The yamaha's were really fatiguing to the point where my ears just hurt. I know that the tube vs ss is a hot topic but I believe the GFA 2535 was one of the amps that Nelson Pass designed for adcom and I've really enjoyed getting to know about his approach and views on music production, to me it makes sense. I would love to hear the Cornwalls matched up with some tubes though, I'd love to hear the difference. The buzz/hiss I mentioned is present within in one meter but not from my listening position but it does make me wonder if Im losing anything in quality. If anyone knows of any good info on cleaning older ss amps please pass along or if you've had experience with the gfa 2535 or other adcom amps of this era i'd love to hear from you. Again Im loving these guys! If anyone in the chicago area would be interested in a really nice pair of RF 82's Im thinking about letting mine go.
  18. So after a year in the Klipsch family I made what I am considering an upgrade. I finally came across a pair of Cornwalls that were both, in really nice condition and at what I thought was a fair, perhaps even, a good deal. The only downside would be that they are II's from 86. From my understanding the build quality on the II's internal networks were a bit less than the I's. That said however thus far I am Really happy with them! I cant get over how well they image, with the right material they are halographic. I am currently running them with a adcom gfa 2535 at 60w per side and a emotiva umc-1. The room is a good size 15' x 21' speakers are placed on the short wall about 9' apart from center to center. listening position is at about 14'. Anyway I wanted to see if anyone had thoughts or opinions on a couple of things...... 1st) I am getting a slight buzz from the tweeters when the amp is on with no signal. Is this a dirty pot? Just what to expect with cornwalls? Cornwalls and ss amps? 2nd) I am planning to replace the crossovers any thoughts on either the crites or ALK crossovers are welcomed. I've read that the crites are replacements where as the ALK's are upgrades. Anyone with experience getting inside a pair of II's with any tips or words of wisdom please share. 3rd) i am also planning to replace the tweeter diaphrams with new titanium ones from crites. Have any of you done this? Impressions? and how difficult was the operation? Any tips? Overall I am really really happy with these speakers I am anxious to see what they are really capable of.
  19. I'VE BEEN SKEPTICAL ABOUT THE HD TRACKS STUFF BUT WOW! best five bucks I've spent in a long time. Im really impressed. Look up David Chesky he's the guy behind Chesky records whose label provided all the recordings for the sampler. Interesting guy.
  20. nice!!! I've been on the hunt for a pair for a while now. I just missed out on a pair for $500, which I thought was a good deal but $300is amazing!! Anyways Im curiousto hear how you would compare the Lascalas and the Cornwalls to one another? I am somewhat torn between which of the two I'd prefer having never heard either myself but I like the big cabinet and woofer of the cornwall. Interested in your impression. Also if you are in the chicagoland area and want to sell the cornwalls....... well you know who to call. Congrats again
  21. Hi Opusk2k9 Im interested in your lascalas....... are you in Plainfield or fort wayne? Im in Batavia IL so if you're in Plainfield maybe I could make the drive over. Also do you have any pictures? Thanks and good luck with the sale
  22. I've been keeping an eye on the used mkt. as Im always curious to see whats out there and what the mkt prices are on things. One thing I've noticed is, not surprising, that its fairly common to see older speakers with dust caps that are pushed in or creased or some other oddity. Often the seller claims that the performance is perfect. Im curious what the general concensus is among the forum. I realize each case will be different but generally speaking what is the thought? I ve recently come across a pair of cornwalls that appear to have the centers of the woofers pushed in and Iam trying to decide if its worth my while to make the hour drive to audition them. Also trying to figure out how to negoiate a fair deal in the event I decide to go for it. As always I appreciate any thoughts or insights. Thanks for your time.
  23. So I spoke with the seller again today and he admitted that he had attempted to refinish these speakers and in doing so pretty much ruined their appearence. I am more interested in how they sound but even with that being true I would plan to put them in my family room and they are fairly large. So at this point my question is how much work is involved with refinishing the cabinets? Im thinking if the price is right and acknowledges the fact that they are in project condition I could be tempted to take them on. However they are pretty old and I am wondering if I should hold out for a pair that don't require extra work. Right now there are two pairs in my general area the pictured pair, which the seller has mentioned he'd like to try and get $700 for, and another pair which I believe are 80's and in better condition asking $1000 or best offer. Any advice or thoughts to a noob is welcomed. Cheers
  24. curious how would you compare your rf 7's tothe cornwalls?
  25. hi here are the pics that were posted.......not so great.
