  1. Yes the obvious reply to that would be-Sounds like it plugged into a regular line-level jack to me instead of a phono input or possiby mismatched cartridge types on a phono preamp(doubtful). ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  2. Just I know where to get a pair of Heresys in town here(Austin) for $290. You should REALLY look into those. That would be a great place to start and would be a great improvement over either the Sony or Yamaha speakers. With the other $200 left over from a $500 sale you could grab a pretty decent CD player. I was thinking about grabbing those Heresys and use them in my HT setup with my KG 4.2s but wouldn't be sure which to use as my mains and which for surrounds. Any suggestions guys. Still thinking about getting them for myself. 3. Just a little trick I'm sure a lot of you vinyl junkies know about but for those of you who don't here goes. I know everyone has at least a few slabs o' wax that is in perfect shape except the fact that it's so warped you can put a piece of Scotch tape on the hole and eat a bowl of Cheerios out of it. Or you find that stack of cream in your pants vinyl somewhere but it looks like someone left it in the trunk of their car for a few weeks here's a solution. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy 2 panes of thin glass cut to a 14" square each. When you get them home be sure to clean the glass well to get rid of any sand or anyhting abrasive that may be attached to the glass. Put your cereal bowl between the glass and get out the hair dryer that you used to tease your hair with while listening to Dokken's Back for The Attack in 1987. Anyway just apply heat to the glass and keep it moving for quite a while. I usually do this for 10 minutes or so then stack a huge stack of art books(about 30 lbs worth) on top and let it sit for a while. People don't do this with some priceless LP but with ones that are good for nothing except the trashcan. I've fixed at least 20 or so this way and have never had a problem. It may take some persistence but I've been able to flatten out every single LP I've tried it with and can at least listen to them now. I've also heard of people leaving the glass setup out in the sun for the same effect as the hair dryer but I've tried that method. Good Luck. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  4. Just wanted to throw in that I've never NOT been into vinyl. Been collecting since I was a kid. Just never had anything but DJ decks like Technics 1200s & Vestax. I just never really had a turntable for strictly listening and not mixing/scratching that's why I bought the Rega. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire This message has been edited by synthfreek on 02-14-2002 at 07:12 PM
  5. How do you mean "not what I'm looking for"? I think I touched on nearly every style of playing except for straight jazz(Mark Whitfield, Joe Pass, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery), blues(Albert King, SRV, Albert Collins, almost anyone that records on Alligator Records) & country(Chet Atkins, Junior Brown, & Merle Haggard RIP). Maybe it's because you don't recognize any of these guys except for the "metal" guys. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  6. Any guitarists out there? For sheer tecnicality: Al Dimeola(he's good and all but I wish he could play faster) Michael Brook(buy Cobalt Blue and be schooled) Steve Hillage(the most underated/unheard guitarist of the 70's) Frank Zappa(another underated genius of the guitar) Randy Rhoads(Ozzy) Jimi Hendrix Paco de Lucia Vinnie Moore(Time Odyssey was the best of that entire crop of "neo-classical" guitar instrumental albums IMO) Yngwie J. Malmsteen(not to be confused with all the other Yngwie Malmsteen's out there) Me Jeff Beck(recent "how could I forget him! Knew I'd have to edit" addition...aaargh. Blow By Blow is one of the best guitar albums PERIOD. Especially Cause We've Ended As Lovers) For songs: Jimmy Page(The Firm hahaha) Jon Spencer/Judah Bauer(Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) Steve Albini(Big Black/Shellac/uber-producer) Joey Santiago(The Pixies) Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein(Sleater Kinney) Nick Drake David Gilmour Me ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire This message has been edited by synthfreek on 02-14-2002 at 01:39 AM
  7. Well if Samuel Barber's-Adagio for Strings doesn't get to you emotionally you're probably listening to Bose. I'd recommend the CD(I just looked for 30 minutes and couldn't find it but the CD is a compilation of ambient classical works that is incredible-I'll post the exact name when I find it) & the newer Telarc version of Holst-The Planets with Levi conducting. Telarc's-Wagner-Ring Without Words is great as well. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire

  9. I bought my Rega Planar 3 for $450 in minty mint shape(with original box and unused lid) and sprung for the Rega Super Elys cartridge. All for under $800. Even the $100 entry level phono preamps are gonna smoke any receiver's phono stage so you hafta opt for that. I've been super-pleased with the Parasound I bought. I compared it against the Creek and the NAD and to me it had more defined/smoother bass. It only cost $145 or so if I remember correctly. As far as cleaning I guess I'm an outcast since that's all I use is a very very smooth piece of cotton cloth. I was one of the unfortunate Discwasher users of the 80's and every one of my LPs I've used them on have a coating that creates a lot of surface noise and I've been unable to get rid of it. I'm also a Goodwill, thrift-store & record store $1 bin scavenger. I've pulled hundreds of gems from the $1 bin. Always on the lookout for a copy of Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band or anything by David Axelrod. One day...one day. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  10. I haven't checked this forum in a while. I LOVE my Grado SR-125s! The only reason that I was hesitant to buy them at first was all the reviews of how uncomfortable they were. Guess what people? The headband is flexible. You CAN bend it to shape your head no matter how weird you head is shaped. My head is kinda shaped like a pear and they fit fine. Want a good "headphone disc"? Try UFOrb by the band The Orb. Fantastic! You WILL get dizzy listening all the way through. Imagine Pink Floyd meeting King Tubby with Steve Hillage on guitar making a soundtrack for interstellar exploration with a bit of UFO conspiracy thrown in for good measure. Plus there's a Marcus Garvey joke and a refence to Woody Allen's Sleeper and that's always a good thing. 13. Don't forget...it doesn't matter what the auction closed at if it ended early. There was very well some sort of agreement on price(it could've been $1000) and that bidder just needed to be the high bidder at the time of ending the auction. This is a common thing as I've done the same thing myself both as a seller and a buyer. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  14. Well here's my 2 cents for all it's worth. I just had to say something about the Subaru. Come on now guys you have to admit that's a rockin' little ride. I'm not at all into those Fast & the Furious type cars. In fact anytime my girlfriend or I see a car that even remotely resmembles any from F&F we both laugh and say "Fast & the Furious". My auto tastes range from classic American's like the '57 Nomad to my favorite car of all time the Porsche 911. I love Italians for their styling and performance. I love my '93 Celica cuz it'll last forever. I have too many other hobbies that interest me to sink time and money into cars. When it comes down to it that's all it does is get you from one place to another. I find the people with F&F cars are only trying to get laid or have a substitute for their boring lives. I'm getting outta line here so back to the WRX. I give it props for looking like a Nissan Sentra or Geo Metro but literally almost as quick as a '65 AC Cobra. A true wolf in sheep's clothing. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  15. So I probably shouldn't blow compressed air into the open tray huh? Maybe I will take the cover off and give the lens a check. I'd suggest Metavoid or Stalker as your next Lustmord purchase. I was turned on to Lustmord with Heresey. Stalker is a matchup with Robert Rich and Metavoid is pretty new(last 6 months or so) and is in a slightly different direction. There are actually beats here and there. One of my personal favorites of the year. Steve Roach's newest is damn fine too. 17. For the first 2 minutes of Atlantis the audio drops out completely exactly every 4 seconds for about 2 seconds. After that it pretty much does the same thing but occasionally will play for about 10 seconds before doing the 4 second/2 second thing again for a while. This is the second one I've tried & they both do exactly the same thing. I'm 15 minutes into this one and it's still doing it. Also my Outlaw's Digital connection light(above the DTS light) turns off right after the silence starts and comes back on a second later. I'm sure it's my DVD player. It also would not play ANY copies of Jeepers Creepers(I tried 6 copies). Anyone have the Toshiba 3109? I thought the 3108 was the one plagued with problems. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire

  20. Yes that infomercial has been shown for several years. I can't believe a musician the caliber of Herbie Hancock can make the statements he did with a straight face. I'd love to see the Bose Bloopers. The one part I liked was"This is what a regular stereo sounds like"--picture Herbie tinkering on a TOY piano(seriously a child's $20 Walmart piano)--"Now this is what Bose sounds like"--now he walks over to his $30,000 Steinway and starts playing. Hilarious. I found myself getting hopelessly frustrated though and I have to turn it off each time before it's over. They kept harping about "Who wants big ole speakers(ME!) when you can get better...blah blah blah..from the patented Acoustimas system". Klipsch should have an infomercial with someone saying "This is what Bose sounds like--at this point a big greasy sphincter should be shown opening up and letting out a horrific fart--"Now this is what Klipsch sounds like--extreme close-up of some thumping Klipsch woofers moving some serious air". That's just my opinion. I could be wrong. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire

  22. With the kind of bass you're striving for I would not even think about pushing a sub with the juice from your receiver. You need a dedicated amp for your sub. 24. I'm not really sure what you mean by "be able to run stereo cds of of all 4 satalite speakers ". Do you want the same exact thing to be coming out of both the front and rear speakers & not the mains(front) primarily playing with the rears filling in with spatial effects?
