  1. What about 60 year old movies being THX certified???!!! I mean Sleeping Beauty is classic but is the sound quality good enough to be THX approved? ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  2. I agree completely. Letterboxed is how the director(artist) created his work so why should anyone watch it any other way? I work in a video store and you guys would not believe how naive people are when it comes to this. They think the opposite is true. They think the black bars are cutting off the top and bottom of the picture. They call and ask how to get rid of them. They return the movies and say something is wrong with them. I've heard it all. I've never watched a movie from inside of a pill box. That's pretty cool that it's letter-boxed from in there. :-) ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire

  9. I have an AWESOME DVD called CHRONOS by the director Ron Fricke(famous for Baraka & Koyaanisqatsi). It is a visual treat with no dialog. Experimental camera techniques such as high-speed exposures being the main technique used. My Outlaw 1050 A/V receiver recognizes the 96mhs format fine. Another must-own DVD is Baraka. Beautiful stuff and a great soundtrack by Michael Stearns(who also recorded Chronos). ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  10. The Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver rules and is a good compromise for both music and HT listening. I run a pair of Klipsch KG 4.2s with it and the matchup is superb. We have similar tastes in music too. Today I listened to: DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Enya-Watermark, Nick Drake, Union Jack, Barber's Adagio for Strings & Holst-The Planets. Everything sounded great. How far are you from Austin? ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  11. Anytime I've seen anyone even remotely thinking about purchasing the Outlaw 1050 I've been chiming in with a resounding "Just do it!". A loudness button?! The bass management on the Outlaw is great. 6 X-Over settings. Just use the bass level setting to simulate a loudness button. As far as their power ratings it goes like this. Where as a lot of other companies just bolt out a 1mhz blast and push it to the acceptable distortion threshold to get their maximum wattage rating Outlaw uses a real-life full audible range of 20Hz-20Mhz. Don't be surprised if Sears doesn't honor that ad either. You are correct with the Video outputs though. I go directly to my RGB ins on my TV though so it's not really a prolem for me. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire

    Poll Question

You punch in the Termination Date and an extra version shows up on the main menu. Have you guys seen the "Easter Egg" website that shows all the extra hidden features on DVDs? I'll try to find it again and post the URL. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire

    96mhz?

Actually the fantastic film Chronos uses 96mhz audio and my Outlaw recognizes it fine. When I first played it I saw the "96" in the display and double-checked the case to see what that was all about. Chronos is a journey through visuals from like 50 or so different locals all over the world. Just visuals and a fantastic score by Michael Stearns. One for film lovers only. In the style of Baraka & Koyaanisqatsi. You should be able to get it for like $10. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  14. God I thought this movie "licked da tip"! The dinos looked like crap! They looked better 10 years ago. The DTS soundtrack was really good though. Especially the scene where the airplane fuselage was being rolled around. I got a little dizzy there. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  15. I second Jim except for the fact that when I switch from DVD to CD without the sub it remembers my settings. Don't know what I did for it to do that though. I've got the crossover on my sub at 100 & 80 on the outlaw so anything 80Hz or below gets sent to the sub. I have the X-over set just a bit over 80Hz to compensate for the Hz that may be lost right at or about 80Hz. 16. This brings up a little topic I've always wondered about. Can you guys believe some of the merchandise offered on eBay without pictures???!!! I mean come on. I see CARS on eBay without pics. Go buy a $50 digital camera for Christ's sake. I rarely if ever buy anything without a pic and I buy a lot of stuff from eBay. 17. I used a Yamaha HTR-5130 with my Klipsch KG 4.2s up until about 2 months ago and never had a problem with humming. It also was a match made in heaven as far as sound quality goes. The only time I've had problems with humming it's been interference between power cords and interconnects. Try to keep them as separate as possible. As far as a new receiver I can honestly say I've never had good Kenwood ANYTHING. Avoid like Realistic. I've moved up to the Outlaw 1050 like many posters on this board and can't praise it enough. The Denon 2803 or 3802 were second on my list though. 19. I run a video store and would be happy to give you first impressions of yet to be released movies if interested. Although this movie is total Hollywood cheese-fluff it does have some great(and LOUD) sound effects. It's also the first DVD I've run across with a Dolby Headphone Soundtrack(although I've yet to listen). THX certified with a DTS soundtrack(which I listened to). If you can get through the first hour of filler you're in for a treat. There was a great scene that jumped from the very loud explosions and gunfire to a quiet interior shot. Then the bullets were pinging metal left and right...up and down. You could hear them whizzing around in the room. I've made it to a little over the 2hr mark now and the last 45 minutes or so have been non-stop action. The score by Hans Zimmer is a let-down. Yuckorama. Totally sappy compared to his collaboration with Lisa Gerrard(of Dead Can Dance-a fantastic ethereal band that I for some reason never hear mentioned from audiophiles) for the Gladiator score. Another problem this flick suffers from are the subtitles. These are possibly the worst I've ever seen. I have a 36" TV and was struggling to see the subtitles from 6-8 feet away. Horrible! This is one of those to own just to impress HT newbies and maybe laugh at some of the inane dialog between Affleck and his love interest. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  20. I am in love with the Boltz brand of racks. Very high-tech although they are not drawer types of storage. Don't you wanna show off your goods? That would drive me insane to have to open up drawers/files to find that one CD. Check out their website. They're modular so you can attach another as your collection grows. My problem? I have almost 4000 CDs so we're talkin' a few grand to store them all. ------------------ Outlaw 1050 A/V Receiver Rega P3 Turntable AMC CD8b CD Player Toshiba 3108 DVD Player Klipsch KG 4.2s(main) 2 Dynaco A-10/V IIs(centers) Cerwin Vega E-706s(rears) Cerwin Vega LW-12(sub) Parasound PPH-100 Phono Preamp Vampire Wire Digital Interconnects & Speaker Wire
  21. I am using a Y-splitter on the sub out of my Outlaw 1050 to feed my powered sub. There are stereo RCA inputs on the sub. Is this typical for a sub with only one driver? Should I only use one of the sub input jacks? If so which one? It's a Cerwin Vega with a 12" driver(I forget the model).
  22. I would ditch the sub & buy a powered one. Your center would be getting robbed of precious watts after the signal is passed through the unpowered sub. Buying a 200 watt power amp for your sub may be a more cost-friendly alternative but may be a bit awkward. You wouldn't be able to control the sub volume unless you found a remote control amp. Do they exist?
  23. What about us "weird folks" who listen to more demanding music than Billy Joel & James Taylor? The straight-up CD format will be THE format for more underground music for a long time. Until they release ufORB by The Orb or 76:14 by Global Communication on a superior format than vinyl or CD I'm not budging. Jeez what next .38 Special on SACD? You know what? People will buy it. As the wise elder Beavis once said "You can't polish a turd.".
  24. Actually I see Denon's 3802 for less than $700. Shop around.
  25. Thanks guys but I've got some sad news. Upon close inspection the actual grills have become damaged so I will actually need to replace those too. That will be impossible to do I'm sure. Not sure what else I can do but keep a lookout. Eric
