  1. Done. I was a little surprised to see the factory cut outs weren't slightly bigger or even the same size as the motor board openings. Tackling either the fabric or walnut veneer next weekend. Mixing two things I enjoy: my CWs and woodworking.
  2. I am refinishing my cw1. I used the old grilles as a template for new ones rather than the motor board. I believe the grilles to be original. However, when lining up the old and subsequently the newly routed grilles, the tweeter and sqawker holes partially obstruct the motor board cut outs. I plan on fixing this but realistically what kind of impact does this have on the sound? I assume minimal as this came from klipsch this way. Thanks.
  3. I took pre and amp and hooked up a single channel to a speaker. Played music and then switched channels. No problems there either. Power down sound thru the speakers though. Speakers used during this test were not my kg4. Problem noted with those only.
  4. Adcom Gtp600. Not sure where the problem lies. Looking for a starting point to rule something's in or out.
  5. I was excited to hook this up to my KG4s while I'm refinishing my Cornwalls. Paired with Adcom GTP 600 preamp. Make all necessary connections and order of events: 1. Sound out of one channel immediately and nothing on the other. 2. Not long after start up other channel kicks in. 3. Same channel shuts off again a few mins later 4. When attempting to power down amp, switch didn't shut power off. 5. Power down sound thru speakers as amp shut off turning off power strip. I don't have other amps or pre-amps to do swap outs with. Just a denon avr 3801. Any ideas on what to look for? Thanks
  6. I was recently picking up materials to do new Cornwall grills and could pull up on my phone. Great resource for materials and steps to complete.
  7. I wonder if I have enough personal mass to be pressed into a 200 gram record and sent for MFSL treatment after my untimely passing...
  8. That said I think you would probably still get good results but have to stay away from 19 feet, just to be safe.
  9. From Arto's Klipschorn room build- First things first. Ideally.you need a room with the proper proportions to achieve uniform distribution of eigentons (low frequency room modes). The ratio is 1: 1.26: 1.59 (called the Golden Mean) (see Klipsch Dope From Hope newsletter Vol9, No1 Feb 1968). It doesnt have to be exact. And rooms outside of these proportions have been known to sound good. Use the long wall for the stage. It makes a dramatic difference & you may even find that you dont have to turn-it-up as loud. Another trick you can use is the Half-Room Principal (Room Dimensions for Optimum Listening and the Half Room Principal, IRE Transactions on Audio, Vol AU-6, No1 Jan-Feb 1958, pp 14-15). For instance, my room is 27 wide. A 42Hz note has a wavelength of aprox. 27. So based on the longest dimension of the room, the room will accurately convey the full wavelength of a 42 Hz tone. But based on the Half Room Principal, you can expect a reasonably flat room response down to 21Hz (21Hz=54 wavelength. 54/2 (one-half of the wavelength)=27. If you take this one step further & use the diagonal dimension (which you can do with K-horns because of their corner placement & 45 degree angle toe in) it works even better. My room has a diagonal dimension of 32 which ½is one-half of 64. 64 puts you at about 17-18Hz. My system has measured down only 9Db below 20Hz with no electronic EQ. Not bad for folded horn-loaded speaker of this size. And in fact, that puts the K-horns at about 95Db/watt below 20Hz. Much better efficiency than any of the sub-woofers or so-called flat audiophile speakers out there. A dimension you want to avoid is 19 (or multiples & fractions) thereof as it is the wavelength of 60Hz (electrical hum).
  10. No matter what the surface is going to have to be prepped with some light sanding and I would imagine if the scratches are deep enough, filled. They look black but I'm guessing I'm wrong.
  11. Update your system list!
  12. I'm in the process of moving across country and my corns were just loaded on a truck. Before they were, I noticed that one of the speaker wire terminals on back was slightly loose. Since I can't take off the back and look, at the moment, is this a relatively easy fix? What is the connection on the inside like? Also, am running a Denon AVR 3801 and am considering an amp instead. I've only heard one other set of corns run before and that was with an adcom set up. I would really like to maximize their potential and am ok with pre/amp set up if need be. Strong and dependable is key. What is a good set up for corns? Finally, have walnut veneer, new caps, and grille material as a summer project. May hold the caps for a bit until I am able to really use the speakers. But that veneer will happen as soon as I can. Thanks in advance.
  13. Way back in 1990 I paid between 600-700 in 1990 for my 1990 OO KG4 pair. That included tax. What are they worth today? I think you should see and hear them to see if 250 is worth it.
  14. I bought my KG4s senior year of high school and they went immediately to college with me. They were obnoxious in the dorm or apartment (room size to sound) and were great at the house for all uses. They were small enough to move around as needed and served well for sporting events and music. Still have them 23 years later and they still sound and look great. My Cornwalls are in the garage right now as I recap and veneer the cabinets. I would start with the KG4 and keep an eye out on Craigslist or similar for Cornwalls. I got mine under $500 so there are plenty of finds out there.
  15. I contacted the seller before. He has 2 pair last I knew. 73 and 76 if I remember. Price was also 2495 when I emailed a couple weeks ago. One birch and one walnut based on his pics of the stickers.
  16. The speaker wire connections in the back are screw in. Is there a good option to connect the speaker wire without swapping in banana clip? 14G wire seems like it could make better contact with something.
  17. I've opened up the backs and taken a look at the components and noted that the inside of the cabinets were very clean. Neither speaker has the sticker on the back anymore but I can read some of the details in the adhesive that remains. I've got a veneering project in my future as some of the original birch veneer is missing and there are a couple dings that will ultimately bother me. Let's see if the pic is added. Day 1 CW next to KG4.
  18. My new to me Cornwalls (1980) are in my living room and hooked up to a Denon AVR-3801. Aside from enjoying them, what are the first things a new owner of vintage CWs should do? What are the signs of needing to replace caps or crossovers?
  19. K-33-E K-55-V K-77-M S/n is stamped as well as USA. On the left side BF is also stamped.
  20. Just got them home and hooked up them up. It goes without saying that the sound is different than my KG4s. I spun George Gershwin An American in Paris and War Pigs by Sabbath on vinyl. I like. I'm going to pull the backs to see what is going on inside. The stickers are both missing off the back. Only thing I have are 2 consecutive s/n indicating 1980. Finally, while the cabinets do have some nicks that don't matter to me, I'm thinking about either a cherry or walnut veneer job in the near future. Finally a project to work on!
  21. Agreed. Bring others with but the bug isn't going away.
  22. My wife doesn't understand and while that doesn't surprise me... But the bigger house is probably what it's going to take. I've got 2 sets of vintage klipsch speakers on my hands. What a conundrum!
  23. Might consider woodworking scrapers. Rocker sells them in a set I believe. Might still be a tight reach but quicker than hand sanding with a foam block or paper.
  24. Well that was quick. Bought the Cornwalls in Phx. They sounded awesome and the nicks are nothing. I have been known to do some woodworking including veneer so I've already begun thinking about that process. In the meantime I will enjoy the sweet sounds. Seems to me that a pair of Cornwalls for $4xx can't really be beat.
  25. I will definitely look at them. What are the odds of buyers remorse getting Cornwall and then hearing khorns? That is the question for many I suppose.
