  1. I've had the HD600's for about 2 years now. I love them. The sound is crystal claar and they are extremely comfortable. $250 is a good price for them. I had a pair of the closed Sony's and didn't like them. They made my head sweat and they gave up the ghost in about one year! One replacement driver was about $120! You can get replacement everyting for Sennheiser phones...even the OLD ones! I have a pair of HD400's from '83 that are still working just a good as the day I bought them and I can STILL get replacement ear cushions for cheap on the Sennheiser web site. Ed
  2. It's easy to hook them up in series. The first wire goes from the amp + to the first speaker +. The second wire goes from the first speaker - to the second speaker +. The third wire goes from the second speaker - to the amp -. If the speakers are the same model, they will receive the same voltage and product the same amount of sound. Ed
  3. You know, if you really want an improvement, try ripping out the power supplies in your components and run them with BATTERIES! Get yourself a bunch of lead-acid batteries and run them in series so you have the correct DC voltage and connect them with jumper cables (gold plated) to your components bypassing the AC/DC power supplies. I bet you would hear a huge difference! Ed
  4. Seriously now. BobG, can we get copies of Dope from Hope posted on the web site? Ed
  5. B&W speakers are NOT horn loaded. They use the "horn" (really a tapered transmission line) BEHIND the drivers to absorb all sound coming from the back of the drivers. I heard the 801's hooked up to one of those 1000 watt amps and jumper-cables. They sounded completely FLAT. A piano sounded like one of those little things kids play. I'll take my 'scalas with my 60 watt/channel tube/MOSFET integrated amp any day over that pool-room setup! Sure, the B%W's are pretty. My 'scalas are ugly as hell but they SOUND GREAT! I like to listen to them in the dark anyway. Ed
  6. You can buy new diaphrams directly from EV (800.392.3497) for $21 + shipping each. They are quite easy to replace. Ed
  7. The break-in period on the Copper Cones is when a half-moon crease appears around the dust cap on the cone (like I saw on one of the woofers in the store). Then the woofer is completely broken in! Webmaster, could you start a "wild Claims" section? I think we need one here! Ed
  8. I hate to pour water on the fire, but. If the plastic basket is soooooo good, why aren't they used on pro model speakers? 1) Metal baskets resonate at high frequencies. Not at the frequencies that the driver operates at. At what frequencies do the plastic baskets resonate? 2) Metal baskets are much more labor and investment intesnive to manufacture. One-stop injection molding is much faster and cheaper than making a cast metal or stamped metal basket. 3) Aluminium cones are much simpler to manufacture. Just stamp them out from a roll of Al sheet and then whip them in the anodize bath for 1/2 hour. Manufacturing a good paper or Kevlar cone is much more involved. Aluminium cone/ plastic basket drivers make sense for very large production runs. They work well enough for the type of loudspeaker they are intended for. Ed
  9. Oh god! Rosewood! They will look good with or without the lights on! Ed
  10. Commenting on the article. That guy never met my wife! She owns more CDs than I do! She listens to the Music more than I. She doesn't know much about electronics but, DON'T TRY TO TAKE THE LASACLAS AWAY FROM HER! You will probably lose at least an arm! Ed
  11. well, I got my 901's home and I'm trying to set them up just like they had them in the store. I put them in the corners like the salesman told me to but, I'm having problems putting the equalizer that comes with them BEHIND my wall so no one can see how I have it set. I'll have to move the 901's into the hallway since I have them on an OUTSIDE wall right now. Oh well, guess there goes that great "imaging" I was told about in the store! Ed
  12. Cerametallic -- GIVE ME A BREAK! What a lot of BS! I wish I had one of those little buttons right about now! PWK, could you send me one PLEASE. Plastic ANYTHING on a speaker except for wire-wraps -- NOT! So, if you drive them hard, do we exceed the glass transition temperature and does the magnet fall on the floor? What about shielding? Those extra rainbow colors on my TV kinda look neat (like my copper-tone woofers). My 1978 LaScalas were owned by a person who thought they were 1000 Watt (that's right one thousand watt) speakers. They survived him and are still going strong. The only way you are going to get quality in a speaker any more is DIY! Ed This message has been edited by oosting on 07-13-2001 at 08:38 PM
  13. I heard a pair of LaScala's at an appliance store in 1978. Nothing ever came close to Klipsch since. I got a used pair of LaScala's (made in 1978) in 1999! It's like Chocolate. Once you taste it.... Ed
  14. BTW, My "other" speakers are 1985 Realistic Mach II's. 95 dB@1m1w 160 w continuous 25-50,000 response Ed
  15. JDMcCall, Gush? Please! Where's my big wooden spoon when I need to gag myself?! No, the copper color is a DYE, not real copper! Don't be deceived by the color. It is not functional in any way. The cones are Aluminium that is annodized and then dyed to look pretty (oh baby!). BTW, from my experience with Aluminium annodizing, a thin film of Aluminium Oxide does not make the cone any more rigid. I don't know how they come up with their claims. Show me the data! The cone is annodized and dyed for cosmetic purposes only. Otherwise, you would get that nasty white corrosion as the cone ages. I'm with John. I love what Klipsch did in the past but I'm not impressed in any way with the new stuff. They don't sound any better than my "other" speakers. 16. wired1, Why don't you get a pair off Ebay? You can pick them up for around $1000 and you won't have to wait! Ed
  17. Get them reconed. Probably for around $50 each. Check out http://www.newfoam.com/. Ed This message has been edited by oosting on 06-06-2001 at 05:01 PM
  18. B&O only does electronics well. I listened to their latest speakers and was not impressed. High distortion, NO dynamics, little bass very low effeciency. The salesman tried to impress me by telling me that the maximum output of their speaker was 103 dB! That's 103 dB at FULL POWER! My old Radio Shack Mach II's are better! Ed
  19. Yeah, I can sympathize with you guys that complain about your wives. I used to have a wife like (worse than) yours and stomach problems bordering on an ulcer. She thought I was spending too much when I bought some Radio Shack speakers! Well, I got rid of my stomach problems I divorced the Bee-with-an-itch! At 40, I had enough sense to know when I found a keeper (my new wife). She loves what I love and hates what I hate (and vice-versa). She loves the old beat-up LaScalas (that we took a road trip together to buyman, that pissed off the X ). Im working on a huge (5X8X1.5 foot) horn loaded subwoofer project and she has no problem with it. Yes, we are going to put it in the living room. So, hang in there. Orget rid of her and your ulcer! Ed
  20. I feel sory for most of you guys! My wife is the best! She is very enthusiastic about audio. Our dream is to live in a shack in the woods. Just us and the chipmunks! She says she wants to thke three things along. Our LaScala's, her cello and ME! Ed BTW: marriage is not give and take. It is give, GIVE, GIVE. (The more hou give, the more you get).
  21. Keith, Maybe you should involve your wife in the decision making process earlier. I'm sure she is not stupid...she married you. It's a real opportunity to teach her about your favorite hobby! You never know, she may have some good ideas of her own. Ed
  22. The equation: 1.73(F/Fc)I/100 implies that the distortion level is inversely proportional to the throat diameter. If a .9 inch throat produces 7% distortion, you would need a 6.3 inch throat to keep the distortion below 1%. A 2 inch throat will produce 3.3% distortion. Does anyone know if this is consistant with measurments of the K55V driver? Ed
  23. The speed of sound statement was in reply to : "f the throat were larger and the length the same (with a small increase in mouth size, perhaps) would the cut-off rise to an unacceptable frequency? Specifically, what does the small throat do to sound (velocity too high?)? " Is this non-linear effect larger than the non-linearity of the compression driver at high power levels? If not, you wouldn't hear it. Ed
  24. OK, what exactly is an air compression instability? BTW, the speed of sound in air at a given temperature, pressure and humidity is a CONSTANT. Ed
  25. lascalawife, You can get new diaphrams for the tweeter from Electrovoice: Electro-Voice 12000 Portland Ave. S. Burnsville, MN 55337 USA Telephone: 952/884-4051 Fax: 952/887-5588 Toll Free: 800.392.3497 You need diaphrams for the T-35 from them. You can get the woofer re-coned at a place like http://www.newfoam.com/ . Do a google.com search on "speaker recone" for more people who do reconing. Klipsch doesn't have an exact replacement for the 20+ year old woofer. Ed
