Dean, I have reviewed your thread and your webpage etc. A 30 second conversation with you would guarantee that you would tell me I absolutely need to replace the cross-overs in my Khorns (also need to replace something in my KSP's as they went up in smoke and my sub no longer works, but I digress.) My problem is this... these are such works of art, I would put them in glass on top of my KHorns and my existing cross-overs would continue to need replaced. I haven't figured out how to justify buying 2 sets of cross-overs just yet.

Craig, You may have covered this elsewhere and I missed it, but what is the difference between the "record" output jacks and the "main" output jacks? Also, the two sets of "main" outputs were intended for what purpose?

Common ground! When I got my first tube amp - an Eico integrated - and used it with a set of Heresies, I put on Jewel (my other reference is Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms). I was blown away. The detail, the soundstage, and the presence was unbelievable. When I hooked the Eico to the Klipshorns, all of those qualities became larger and more intimate. The Eico suffers from a lack of power and can't quite drive the volume levels I like so it was relegated back to the Heresies for a two-channel bedroom system. I replaced it on the Khorns with a Consonance Integrated which could drive the system to ridiculous volumes and life was good albeit the Consonance was not as airy as the Eico. When I first got the Dynaco's, it was 6 on one hand, half a dozen on the other. I would have been satisfied with either and frequently substituted them but neither really matched that presence of the Eico. When I upgraded the Dynaco's with the new board and the power supply, the bass became tighter, separation increased a bit, and you could almost taste Jewel. The upgraded Dynaco's have never been "switched" and I completely lost the upgrade bug.

You want them to sound their best? Easiest thing to do is send them to Craig at Nosvalves and have him upgrade them. Wanna do it yourself and have the necessary soldering skills and patience? Look on here for info related to power supply upgrades and driver boards. Fun stuff to do and a number of possibilities. Myself, I upgraded the driver board with a Poseidon driver board and upgraded the power supply to use an SDS board with appropriate values. You can find threads on this and Craigs approach to upgrades on here as well (his leverage an even larger power supply). What you will hear almost universally is to replace the stock can with either a new version with increased capacity or bypass it altogether and put in your own power supply.

Hi Audible, Thanks for the post and explanation. As I said, given your assessment of them I will have to get a quad of the KT88SC. As Craig said, I haven't found anyone other than Dougs tubes or Penta themselves who sells them. Penta does not show them making a KT88-98. See product list here. However, Dougs tubes sells a Penta labeled KT88-98 they say is the Shuguang KT88-98 which Craig apparently disputes. You can find the Shuguang labeled version at multiple places but the Penta labeled version I have only seen (no actual image however) at Dougs. To complicate things, Penta does admit way back when that when they ran out of stock of SC's, they substituted the 88-98 for the SC's for a short while so maybe this is where Dougs got them. So much rebranding going on, who knows. After the label disputes and branding and purchase of branding rights, it boils down to Chinese or Russian primarily and which Chinese or Russian tube after that. I will try the Penta solid plates though and probably the Tung-Sol's. As you said, these 88-98's are ok - they were always stable in my amps - but they don't blow my mind. I know some others who run the Genelex and they all talk about the pretty blue glow of the tube... I have read that is a gaseous tube or some such thing and you mentioning them going up in smoke on you in a pretty blue lightshow isn't very reassuring for $200+/quad. I am still interested in seeing if anyone leans on Craig to boost the VRD's to 150 watts a channel using the Tung-Sol 120's. Niche market there. 150 watt tube monoblocks to power a home theater. Sell 7 at a time. Big money.

Oh, yes, there is some innovation going on with tubes. Tung-Sol has come out with the KT120 - a pair of which can deliver up to 150 watts. I wonder when we will see VRD's modified to run that tube at its performance level. I know there are folks already working on modifying Dynaco amps to take advantage of that tube. Nothing built yet, just prototypes being evaluated.

I am confused by this statement above but perhaps I am reading it incorrectly. I know some tube dealers make claims that the Penta is exclusive or is somehow different but given the company says they are the same tubes and in fact advertises "Penta/Shuguang" as the name brand... I don't see how a PENTA branded KT88SC can be any better than the Shuguang marked one. Now if you are comparing a KT88SC to a KT88-98, ok, but that is architecture not name, correct? Lots of reviews claiming the KT88-98 is at the top of the heap while others heap praise on the KT88SC. I have had the KT88-98's for a while (and have no real gripes about them but they don't make me leap for joy either) but I guess I will get a quad of the KT88SC's to listen to as well based on your assessment. Maybe even try the Tung-Sol reissues or the Genelex reissues. May as well have a few spares. Everything else is NIB NOS on these amps but I will not spend huge bucks on output tubes.

I spent a year reading and reviewing players. I desperately wanted to avoid buying a PS3. In the end, I bought a PS3 Slim. Why? Upconversion is fantastic. Instantly compatible with any blu rays released - no waiting on a firmware update; the blu ray disk contains patches on it just for the PS3 to ensure the best possible experience. The load time is unbeatable. It will be upgraded to 3D this summer to take advantage of the new movies and tv's coming out. As someone else mentioned, its ability to connect to media servers is fantasic as well. I run Tversity and can stream music, dvd's, or whatever else I like to it. Oh, yeah, and I hear it plays games too.

I totally agree. Simply no problems whatsoever from my PS3. Load times are very fast, never really felt that I was "waiting" for it to load. Yes, I have done some reading on this as to why the PS3 always works well with new discs. What I found was the discs contain patches that are automatically loaded for the PS3 (take a look at a couple discs). I am certainly contemplating this route but hesitate due to the audio limitations and slightly reduced pq. Pick your poison right.

Hi Bill, I have the 3950. I bought the HD-A2 off ebay after Toshiba announced they were vacating the business. It has a fantastic upscaler and will do 720P or in my case 1080i. As a DVD player (or if you grab some hd-dvd's) it is fantastic. I have almost pulled the gun a dozen times on a blu ray player... they just aren't good enough yet and have too many issues with SD's and even the blu ray disks themselves. Read around and you will find discussions on them taking up to three seconds to do a layer change on SD... many of the new titles end up requiring a firmware update to play a movie and the load times are just this side of ridiculous. I will wait until the next generation and even then am not sure - using Java as the basis was a huge mistake.

Wrong on every point. Drinking over a certain arbritary limit is illegal. That limit is adjusted based on revenue stream. Speeding itself demonstrates nothing. 100 MPH through Montanta is perfectly fine but 57MPH on a local 55MPH highway is poor judgement? Nonsense. Speed itself is certainly not a reckless activity. They are convicted on technicalities but you object to the defense being based on a technicality? The facts are he could have been doing 1 MPH over the speed limit due to a poorly calibrated speedometer, the cops speedometer or radar gun could have been off, and the room may have recently been painted where he was given the breathalyzer. The original post gave virtually NO information to make ANY judgements on yet in the land where everyone is innocent til proven guilty, you guys have bought into MADD's marketing so badly, you are ready to send a guy to forced rehab and/or prison the rest of his life. Drunk driving is a problem but judgmental people are worse. EVERY person I have known demonstrates the exact same knee-jerk reaction and opinion... until they are caught and realize it ain't some evil element doing the deed but themselves. Those 1 or 2 beers you have... under the right circumstances will land YOU in jail. Have two beers and get in a car accident where YOU are hit; in many states, you are guilty. Please elaborate. The rules state you can vote once a day. So, in fact, each of "his" friends could vote 24+ times without any ethical issue. Secondly, there is little question that the contest as designed is not a cutest baby contest (although Max is the cutest baby and I have other pictures which demonstrate that more than the whimsical one my daughter put on there) but a contest on who gets the most votes and that contest allows ballot stuffing by design. Thirdly, Max is 15 months old. He doesn't even know there is a contest. This is an opportunity for my wife to be able to forget about Max's health issues and gain some small measure of joy. Frankly, she has been thrilled by the Klipschters voting for Max and gets great delight when I tell her about the support and posts made by various members here. Obviously, I won't be sharing this one with her. Will I be happy if Max win's or finishes in the top ten? Yes. I will be happy and will relish in the support that was offered by my Klipsch family. I would also take advantage of the sitution if the opportunity affords itself, to use his "win" to spread the word about cystic fibrosis and promote others to help fund a cure.
