  1. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... Horns are honky and we don't want the 402 to get the reputation that it's a good sounding horn. So many people even professional reviews make way too many judgements with their eyes: yeah, horns honk. And change the material of a cartridge body to wood, and all of a sudden it's 'warm and natural' sounding. Metal done tweeters are 'cold and hard'. I closed my eyes you two hours last night and 'watched' the music move around the room. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. The 402s are really putting on a show here tonight. Soundstage and placement is mind bending. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Custom Belle-bottoms. Over built the outter baffle, added braces, and alerted the joinery at the front slightly. Bass reflex bins are in the shop waiting for port tubes... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. I would spend a lot more on the table to begin with. Carts add flavor. I like having a few decent ones around. In this era of DIY a robust used network, those old price ratios are out of step. I'd spend $2500 on a used table and start with a good high end mm cart. Part of the fun is figuring out what you like. There is no 'right' with cart sounds. I like the higher end audio technica carts. They're not out of place on a $10k table. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Old Age

My mother referred to herself as middle aged last month. I had to remind her that she's in her 70s. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. good work. A little oil rub once a year will keep them amazing for a long time.
  9. I knew that was coming..... I debated going that way or making a Police Academy reference. Everyone's got to make a living.
  10. Do you find that the 'Walnut' colours darken the veneer somewhat? I always tend to use a natural (uncoloured) oil just to bring back the depth the the grain...
  11. the veneer is pretty thin. I would recommend a light 'sanding' with very fine steel wool and a fresh rub of Danish Oil. Anything heavier and you will run through the wood veneer. This will get the scratches out and will lessen the contrast for the cup ring. I fear anything further is a complete strip and re-veneer.
  12. looking at air speed at the port: one 4" will not be appropriate and could introduce noise.
  13. I use a small veneer trimmer. It is like a small scale router that counter top guys use for laminate. Alternately, a sharp knife and good substrate and only cut on the pull stroke with the veneer facing up to avoid splintering.
  14. Just wondering. Perhaps using just one 4" diameter port at 4" would give a little more punch to the low-end. 4" should still provide enough area to not whistle.
  15. that's quite the jump with eq. Interesting comment on the sealing of the unit.
  16. If this is a road you want to go down (vinyl playback), I would start with a decent and modern entry level turntable. You will save yourself money and headache in the long run. I've been venial only place back for the past 15 years now. It's rewarding and frustrating.
  17. Email Bob Crites. He will work it out for you.
  18. does it happen when the stylus is not touching the record? does it happen when the record is spinning, and what about not spinning?
  19. It would be interesting to see the sealed plots.
  20. Thanks, I read through your DIY thread. It is interesting, I am in nearly the same boat as you, with the same woofers. The numbers I am getting through simulation show that a slightly smaller volume 4 cu ft. with a 35-40 hz tuning seems best. I was planning to mock up a reflex box that had ports snap similar to a Cornwall. That said, I don't think you will ever get big bass from EDm or some hip hop as you mentioned.
  21. Nice job. What size ports and what internal volume are you using?
  22. Chris, thank you for that explanation. Also, thanks everyone for the thoughts.
  23. so, how much better is the 402 compared to the 510 for music in a living room?
