  1. One can only aspire to live with the diversity of voices that I deal with - I have made depression an Art Form friend Marty... As I wallow in my despair, I hear in the background a sonorous musical voice singing 'Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection'. Just who opened the Doors and let that out?.....
  2. I respectfully disagree with not needing a subwoofer, but my desire for elevation probably makes the need more dramatic.
  3. As I write this I am an exhausted shell of my former self.... This past Saturday as I was resting from a quite wonderful night of being kissed by every woman I met (It was my voice Ryan - a santuaried member of the IRA that I let out every March 17th) I had the Fisher fired up and was mellowing out with Jean Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean. It took me back to my flashback days and I was lost in a dream that was somewhere between Peyote and LSD. I was shocked back to reality by the sudden and simultaneous ring of the doorbell and the ring of the phone. I shouted toward the front door that I would be there soon and answered the telephone. My friend Marty was calling and he appeared to be in shock. I verbally slapped him to bring him to his senses. I have had this conversation with many men - only a woman can get us to this point. He was able to, between sobs, tell me the story of his girlfriends having left him the night before and that he had hoped to have heard from them by now. Very soon he wandered back to the safety of shock - the best I could tell he was telling me that he was sitting in a chair on a glider (I, for one, thought that sail planes came with their own seats, but what do I know). Knowing there was nothing I could do for him at the moment I reminded him that all women reveled in making us cry and that he would get over it in time for a trip to the singles bars this next weekend. With that I promised to call later, hung up and headed to the front door. When I opened the door I was met by two very beautiful women in the middle of an Austin Power's movie. Then one removed the short blonde wig and I smiled, kissed her lightly on the lips and said "Hello Tickles, it has been a long time." I suddenly felt something wrap around my arm and just as I was able to note that it was a motorcycle chain it was used to spin me around. As if by magic my lips met another's and we maintained that pose for a couple of minutes. When I was allowed to catch my breath I said "Well Tawny, you never were one for small talk." Well folks, let me tell you - Spending time with scorned girls that are on a rebound mission can be quite exhausting. By Monday we were making love in parts of the house I had not visited in 5 years. By Tuesday I wasn't having to fake a voice when I called in sick - The folks at work were very concerned and told me to get some rest and come in as soon as I could. I was quite sure that Wednesday would be the day that they would finally be spent and Thursday (today) would be a day of rest. I went the limit yesterday and I and the girls went places I had never been to. Exhausted and unable to go any further I collapsed in a heap on the floor under the dining table. I distinctly heard Tickles say to Tawny "You are right, he is nowhere near as viral or vital as our lover. Other than the fact he has a full head of hair, he can't hold up to our Marty." As I lay on the floor in a near stupor the name 'Marty' caught my attention. All of a sudden I realized that these were the girls that had broken Marty's heart. Men have a committment ot each other that does not include being with their girl(s). As I was recovering I practiced my speech to the twins - something that would let them down gently and get them on the road back to Marty. With renewed energy I got up and headed to the twins room. Much to my surprise they were standing by the front door with packed bags. Tawny said she had a swell time but that both she and Tickles had to get back home where they belong. She told me to not take it personnaly and to call a cab. As I recovered today and replenished my electrolytes I began to have a new found respect for friend Marty. He is one heluva man to have these two wanting to come back. So Marty, they should be home no later than tomorrow morning. I love ya man.... Uncle Henry
  4. I have always had them sturdily monted, on a shelf or independently suspended and haven't had a rattle problem. I have little quarrel with MDF - My DIY MDF speaker boxes sound great. It is just a really dusty pain to work with. As to LAcquer - I don't know if the BLO treatment does real well - there is limited porosity (OK, it may not pass as a legal word in scrabble, but you catch the drift). I hope I haven't ruined the twins for you.....
  5. Hello Marty - I always like to chime in on Heresy conversations - They are my favorite versatile speaker. You sub set up seems fine to this country boy and I agree that a sub and heresy's make for very fine listening. Having said all that - after nearly thirty years of heresy listening I always end up liking them best when they are off the floor and in corners. In the ceiling corners is very pleasing to my ears. To each his own... BTW - thanks for sending the twins over - They left after a couple of days and were quite bedraggled. I was so glad to find a couple of women that could last long enough to satisfy me.....
  6. FYI - includes a tester: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/ele/144343306.html
  7. Yo boomer - I have a very similar setup as yours and I settled on a 50" plasma (Pioneer). I spent quite a bit of time checking my primary seats and viewing angles. It was by far the winner as folks got closer to the screen and had to view from the sides. I replaced an older RPTV that was lacking in the side view capabilities. I also found that a much larger screen was only good for the primary viewing seats in a smaller room. With the plasma I do believe I could have gone to 60" and been fine, but DLP and LCD projection for the larger screens really did not give the viewing angle clarity as advertised (IMHO). I am very pleased that I have the brighter Plasma - this makes my regular TV viewing during the day quite easy on the eyes and brings a clarity to HD broadcasts that can be astounding. good luck
  8. I have built a zobel filter before and it can have some value - especially as a cheap stand alone (mostly standalone - impedence matching may require some sort of padding) way to make a reasonable Xover on a two way where the woofer has a pretty high extension in the higher frequencies. In my experience, to use a zobel you need a couple of speakers that are pretty darn close on where they start and stop. Also, a zobel is most effective on the lower freq driver - it manages to give you a flatter impedence as you get to the higher frequencies thus allowing those higher freqs to be reproduced without such a dramatic fall off. In many respects my dirty little filter solution is a 'crossoverless' design and can be done quite pleasingly if you spend time on getting the right drivers. However, a zobel solution by itself is a very limited thing. In a real crossover solution you may use it as part of the network, but most folks get drivers to match in a way that they already work strong in a 1/2 to whole octave above/below their chosen crossover point. This limits the overall value of a zobel focused solution. As to the horn stuff, I suggest you go here: http://www.pvconsultants.com/audio/frdgroup.htm And take a look at some of the calculation programs and see if something can help. I thought they had hornres, but my first glance doesn't see it. To design your crossover you will need to find out how the horn shape influences the response. That is probably why folks get into bunches of mumbo jumbo when talking about the networks for two horns. good luck
  9. You guys are too much fun!!! This is another thread to add to my favorites. Kerant - there is good information throughout this and thanks to all for posting the links. Look past the arguments and you will find good stuff on both sides (if you read closely I think there are four sides, but that is another thread). I, for one, do not think you will find a 'Holy Grail' of crossover that serves a universal purpose. In all but my first crossover modification attempt (which by pure luck worked very well - it was a bit like catching the River in Holdem) I have chosen the drivers I wanted based on performance, sound and frequency response and built the boxes first. I then have them professionally measured one driver at a time before I start thinking of what I want my crossovers to accomplish. Most often the decision is based on how dramatic a slope I want when blending two drivers. That said, I always vette my calculations through knowledgable folks and I have not, as yet, had any of my designs go into service without someone that knows much more than me managing the final tweaks. I find that whilst these folks like to argue they tend to take their passion to helping folks like you and I - the uneducated masses. Good luck.
  10. I am one of those that thinks the best thing about the older heresy is the K-55v and the horn lens - this is the same calcs used on the other heritage horns and I really like the mid sound. In most ways it matches my 2425/2370A JBL concoction. Those more in the know may also tell you that you may be in need of further crossover tuning - especially if you change the horn and get different response charateristics.
  11. One of the resident experts should talk about Comb stuff, but I will give it the first go. What happens here is that the same signal is in some way delayed (electronically, distance from source to ear, yada, yada) and the end effect is something akin to phase cancellation. From what I have heard and modeled the real world effect can range from an accentuation in the Low freqs to a cancellation in the high freqs. I think that is what happened in my center channel project and required me to angle the two outside mid woofs toward the middle - a counter intuitive option.
  12. The best solution if you are concerned about lightning strikes would be a pure grounding of the speaker system - this is usually quite difficult without the speaker being line powered. It is something that is somewhat common in outdoor stadiums, but may not be as easy with your setup. I agree with Coulter - use something else as a lightning rod. Even with good grounding, the electrical surge from a lightning strike is tremendous and any in line attempt to bleed that surge to ground will only have a percentage of success.
  13. My vote is with djk in theory, but I think you would want to measure and see which way the baffle should angle for the outside cones. I had a similar situation with a center and low and behold angling the outside speakers toward the center slightly provided the best results for off axis listening. 2 cents
  14. My 2 cents - I have the SA2 and I am darn pleased. They sit inside a screened porch on the open gable end and broadcast out to the yard/pool. The porch does something unexpected and pleasing - the LF is very full and rich. It is much richer than when it was at the corner eaves. Without any real data, it must be something regarding the reinforcement from the volume of the big box formed by the porch. Not sure why, but it is very pleasing.
  15. Some folks whose opinion I really trust (Michael C.) for one have spoken up here and probably have more experience with these units. However - when I read the specs on the HK I have a hard time seeing a real problem. At 75 Watts per channel you should be able to go near where your ears would ring for a week. That said - I am not a fan of new HK stuff - they seem to be 'less' than a similar rated Denon to my ear and I quite simply don't like the touches they put on the sound. I don't know how to verbalize it, but there is a stark difference between my Denon and my HK avr downstairs - in favor of the Denon.
  16. Well - I think the boys kind of got it right - something has turned into an AM reciever and it is picking the signal up someplace in the chain with enough umph to amplify (if even slightly). Finding this place can be a bear. I don't have any great advice, but I had asimilar experience with an amplified subwoofer. In my case it was a new station so I first called the FCC. It turns out the folks at the new transmitter (about 1 mile from the house) were running very hot. I got a return call from the FCC that it was fixed and checked it out - no more AM. Good luck
  17. D-Man's answer has my vote on what to try. If it is a hump, you may get enough effect to make a difference (although I wonder if you can). Who's comment on the 80hz possible problem really makes some sense to me as well - the longer it sits in my head the more sense it makes. It would be a pretty good thing to check out. I am thinking that a noticable hump at 40hz on a Cornwall would be pretty hard to make happen. Good luck and let us know.
  18. Gil - If I remember an article that Dr. Edgar did on PWK interview he noted that the K-700 was derived from something he picked up from Jensen's trash heap and that it was the original design that was used as a basis for the larger versions of the horn - K 400, 500 and 600.
  19. I don't know if this is a good fit in two channel, but I saw this interesting piece for sale in St. Louis http://stlouis.craigslist.org/ele/126654701.html Since Fini is my console man, thought I would try to catch his eye.
  20. Ran across this page on the web - thought all might like the independent testing results and comments: http://www.belgaudio.com/kcmap.htmhttp://www.belgaudio.com/kcmeasurements3.htm'>
  21. I would think the sonic benefits would be barely (if at all) audible. That said, much like you I find the coolness factor off the scale. I envision the speaker builder's logo on the back plate. When seen through the opening it would be a bit 3D. Very, very cool.
  22. The 2 db baffles me - I think Rick has it right, must be the resistor or an anomaly created by air escaping from the throat. Otherwise I think the would be some sort of garbage sound mentioned.....
  23. Wuzzzer is a winnner! You want the component monitor connection if your monitor can handle it. RGB is very much something for a computer monitor or a computer connection.
  24. I often ask folks what they want from the loudspeaker first. For instance, are you trying to improve on a sound that you like. In my most recent build I was looking to build a 'bigger' sound akin to a Cornwall - this meant that I am a fan of the three way with crossover points similar to the cornwall and I wanted a bit more depth in the low frequencies. I ended up going both lower and higher in my all JBL configuration and I am quite pleased. I have a couple of suggestions - First look to see if you can find some JBL networks that match your speaker preferences - it will be a challenge in a 4 way. Second - think about going for a JBL high Frequency that will have prebuilt crossovers that match. I like the K-77 but it is a rather limited top end. Lastly - you have an opportunity to build boxes within a box which goes quite a ways toward keeping your calculations simple and accurate - that is to say you can house your mids in separate boxes specific to the FR you desire and simply put them inside your larger woofer enclosure. 2 cents and good luck.
