  1. Looking early into to the new year we hope to have a new or at least refreshed set of AA's. I have been very impressed with the 45yr old OEM xovers and anxious to hear what a new set of caps can do - even though we will be using entry level caps at this point.
  2. The power rating differences should not be a factor unless you are trying to entertain your neighborhood. Have you considered going to the a55g mid range driver offered by Crites? I was very pleased when I did this in a pair of klf-30s.
  3. Thanks gents, kind of figured that the 400Hz “sub” was to high and would have been too easy to pin point its location. Unfortunately a “third LS” as a center is just out of the question – real estate & the woman ya know. So it looks that the klf-30s & klf-c7 will have to stay in place for the HT duty's with the LS sit on the ends dedicated to 2-channel.
  4. Just thinking out loud. Has anyone put any thought in making a center channel out of effectively the “top hat” of an LS? In other words build a stand alone top half of an LS with just a k77/k400*? Not sure how much information is used on a center below 400Hz though. Maybe use a passive pair of 8“s or so in a sub for the bottom end that could be placed elsewhere? *k77/k400 would be matching what ever you have in your LS mains of course.
  5. On the chance your heart may had stopped when you read the prices of some of caps in the previous post there is still hope. There are less costly caps that can be used to replace the OEM pieces like Dayton, Solen & Audyn Q4s and others. But by no means am I suggesting that these less expensive caps will sound as good or better than their higher priced counterparts. But they can still make a major improvement of the old stock caps.
  6. I would be careful with adding weight to the passive radiators. A few years back against Crites warnings I did this “mod” to a set of forte IIs. In the end as Crites told me what could happen did - and I had to have both passives re coned.
  7. IMHO – you have the xover covered so the only thing I would consider doing is to pull all of the drivers and re seal them & install Crites Ti tweeter diaphragms. The stock mid driver rarely needs any attention.
  8. Yes Scott & I spent about two hours yesterday together listening to the LS. We really like the more natural & open sound they have. But (for me) it seems to be missing some information in the lower register(s?) of the mid range and/or maybe the top part of the woofer. With the material we listened to we both agreed that a sub is not an app salute necessity that some have described. Being in a medium'ish 14' x 20' x 8.75' room may have something to do with it?
  9. These are your speakers of course but I believe we need to get the xovers back to “normal” condition before we start comparing different pieces of hardware. I agree there will most likely going to be improvements over the avr setup that is currently being used.
  10. Yea, been down now for a bit over a week and have set up the LS. I appreciate your reply as that is the kind of feed back I was hoping for. But as it looks at the moment the best that can be done is to just stay with an AA. We are currently torn between a simple re-cap or scratch build of the AA. And even at that we will only be able to use Dayton, Solen or Audyn Q4 caps.
  11. DizRotus, yes I have SS amps that are all 100wpc minimum - but there is no chance of ever pushing anything close to the proverbial 11 o'clock dial position. And thank you for the offers for diodes gents but I think we will go without like many of you suggested. If we do anything we would put a 1.25a fuse in line.
  12. Thanks for the link @Marvel We are still mulling over what exactly the next step will be, I feel Scott needs to listen to the LS first though.
  13. DHA2S ? I have seen it mentioned here on the board a few times but don't recall ever seeing a schematic of it.
  14. Curios, on inspection it appears that these grills are not intended to be removable. Is this the case? Wouldn't wast to mess them up if not.
  15. Finally have the LS hooked up to a Denon avr-x3200w used in 2-channel mode for right now. When we have either the Denon poa-4400s/dap-2500 or Emotiva gear down here that is the best on hand. So after a few hours of listening it is obvious that there is great promise here but there is some attention needed. Maybe Scott will swing by this weened and check them out. All drivers appear to work so I suspect the OEM xovers are in need of a refreshing, so for the moment Scott & I are debating what to do next. One train of thought would be to just re cap the OEMs and the other thought was to preserve the OEM xovers and I would just build a set of AAs from scratch. This is Scott's money so it would be his call as which way we go of course. But my vote is to just start over and save the originals – to be fair I like to build crossovers
  16. My 2 cents. Having tried bi-wiring and there is nothing to be gained unless there is a deficiency in the single set of cables. Have tried this with many different type/brands of cables over the years. But as of yet there has been no discernible difference from a single cable system. Now if we were talking about say 18ga wire and a 20 ft run......
  17. Thanks but my woman would have her feathers ruffled if we were to work on them this early. It will be something later in the day.
  18. We will see how the body feels today, maybe the Martin Logon reQuests can be moved out of the way.
  19. That will never happen, his woman would kill him if he ever did that.
  20. The first set of Klipsch I had ever listened to was a brand new set of forte IIs on loan in my house ~1992 Then I bought a new set of Quartets have since bought used: forte IIs Tangent 5000s klf-30s klf-c7 kg-4.5s 1975 La Scala* *stored in my living room for a friend
  21. Awesome, we got it straight from the horses mouth.
  22. Yep, Crites told me the k75s & k79s were identical other than the ferrofluid in the k79s.
  23. They sure look nice now.
