  1. Id be interested in any experience and/or advice regarding a system for music playback in a high school band room. The band director has asked for my advice. Unfortunately, I do not yet know his budget. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> My thought is <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cornwall, La Scala or Heresy so that large amounts of clean volume will be available without the need for large amounts of expensive power. I thought I had purchased a set of Cornwalls from a Forum member that I would donate to the cause, but thats another story. A band practice room is far from an ideal space for speakers. The large space, high ceilings and lack of carpet, drapes, etc. are a challenge. The sound in the empty room would not be the same as when 200 kids are seated. The attached photo shows Cornwalls protruding from high on the walls of a practice room at the University of Hawaii. The director, Grant Okamura, told me that they are awful in that location as the highs fire over the first rows of the tiered space, only to be heard by the percussion in the back/top row. He informed me that someone else did that installation without his blessing. Another pair of Cornwalls in a practice room sounds much better. Any input would be appreciated.
  2. I appreciate the confirmation of my suspicion. Am I just getting senile, or did it used to be possible to search completed auctions for several months back?
  3. Is there a way to do an eBay search of completed auctions beyond a week or so?
  4. I have an appointment to go see it this afternoon. If it appears to be solid, Ill be tempted to make an offer. I have warehouse space where it could sit until I, or another Forum member, have the time and money to return it to service. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> It seems like its worth $195.00 just to avoid constructing a DIY bass bin. Whats it worth intact (without drivers)? Id be reluctant to further part it out if someone could use it to match a similar older model. What Im trying to articulate, is that Id consider tying up $195.00 if theres a probability that another Forum member could later take it off my hands (out of the warehouse) or that I could incorporate it into a DIY project as a bass bin only. What should I do?
  5. I'm considering this only as a bass bin, therefore, I'm not concerned about the cost of all of the components (other than woofer). Is there anything about the fact that it was made in 1956 that should concern me? Thanks for any input.
  6. Craig, Would it be possible for you to post some photos? I know someone who might be interested, but photos would be helpful.
  7. colterphoto/Michael: "....what's the yen/dollar exchange rate?" As of 10/11, one Yen = $.0087558, or $1.00 = 114.21 Yen.
  8. These are interesting, but pricey, if my math is correct. As of 10/11, one Yen = $.0087558, or $1.00 = 114.21 Yen.
  9. These appear, from the outside to be well made. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5815570493&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1
  10. They probably sound very good, but, IMHO, not $2,200 good. Fot that kind of money I'd get a good used pair of Khorns or use the $ to build something even better.

  14. The name "Wharfedale" goes way back in British audio. They were known for sand filled cabinets. Products are still made under that name, http://www.wharfedale.co.uk/company.php. Much more, e.g., age, drivers, etc. needs to be known before they could be evaluated anywhere from doorstops to hi-fidelity.
  15. After seeing the photos of D-Mans Jubilee project and after building Khorns, Im not sure if I agree with the easier part. More important, what does D-Man say? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Irrespective of the relative difficulty, reviewing the Jubilee posts has me seriously considering going that route, unless D-man talks me out of it.
  16. Im grateful to everyone for the valuable input regarding the relative merits of the T35 vs. the Beyma CP25 in the thread, Beyma CP25 . <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Also in that thread there was some discussion regarding squawker drivers for a wooden Trachorn. That too was useful. Its now my plan to eventually again make Klipsch type bass bins (I built Speakerlab SKs thirty years ago), unless I can obtain a pair of suitable existing bass bins. I know that Al K. has recommended using the Klipsch bass bins and drivers as they are. Can someone direct me to the specifications of the K33 so that I can consider an Eminence or similar equivalent? To further complicate the matter, I plan to make <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cornwall style cabinets as an interim measure until I am able to complete or obtain the folded horn enclosures. I intend to follow the advice of Dean and Al and use the Trachorn driven by the K55 crossed at 300 Hz with the Cornwall-type enclosures and eventually the folded horns. Again, your insights and advice are welcomed. Thanks,
  17. All of the input is appreciated. I'd be interested in more discussion about the relative merits of compression drivers for the squawker horn, Atlas, Altec, JBL, TAD, etc. If I go to the trouble to use a Trachorn, which drivers should I consider, and why? Perhaps this deserves a separate thread. Thanks,
  18. I see that Al Klappenberger supplies the CP25 with his lovely wooden squawker horn, i.e., I assume that it's comparable to, or better than, the K-77/T-35. Any input regarding the relative merits of the two units, (including input from A.K. himself) would be appreciated. My ultimate plan is to mate wooden squawker horns (Al's or a homemade version) with Khorn bass bins. The X-overs would be AK or similar. I have T-35s and K-55s. Would the Beyma CP25 be an improvement over the T-35?
  19. I agree with Michael. A graphic representation is better than the meaningless phrases. I disagree with dropping the number of posts; combined with the length of membership it's of some use in evaluating the quality of the post. We've all seen cases of individuals who have an abundance of free time and flood the forum with inane posts. Thankfully, most of them have relatively short attention spans and move on to annoy others elsewhere.
  20. Is anyone interested in attending Dave Brubecks (free) performance tomorrow evening? It seems wrong to miss an opportunityperhaps my lastto see and hear an eighty-five-year-old jazz legend. For some reason, I can't get my wife excited about it. If you're interested, contact me at nkdisney@comcast.net.
  21. The attached file shows the front and back of the drivers in question. It now appears to me that these are a version of T-35; not the larger T-350.
  22. Duh? The above post was made before the caffeine kicked in. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Using my DMM they each show 6.2 ohms of resistance.
  23. Bob, Thanks for the reply. I doubt that the speakers that have fallen into my hands are "real alnico." They have rectangular magnets that are approximately 3.0" x 2.75". I know that real alnico magnets have a mystique about them and command higher prices, but I recall reading that the ceramic or "mud" magnets perform as well. Any information or links to information, such as EV's specifications of the T-35 and its several variations, would be appreciated. Is there an easy way using a DMM to determine the impedance of these?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  24. What are the differences between the EV T-35 and T-350?
  25. The Dynaco FM-3 I got off eBay came with a manual, but not the plastic hexagonal tool that the manual describes as necessary to align the unit. Do I need that tool? If so, where can I get one? If not, what are the alternatives?
