Attention @Oicu812:  You did an nice job of listing pics and I like you shared the easy way to post pics in your signature.  FYI those jpg images do not display in Firefox for some reason.  I see the full .jpg file name but I can't click to open and I can't see them.  I can see them with Chrome and MS Edge.

That's odd, because I primarily use Firefox myself, and haven't seen that issue.  Do the images work in IE for you?  I guess that you probably don't use IE any more, since Edge has been auto inserted as the new replacement.

Good, if you do exactly what you say, then your test setup is pretty sound, pun intended. Then, please post your impressions and/or measured results on the original Super Heresy thread. I, and many others, would appreciate it. I believe that any audible differences will be subtle and hard to detect, but I leave that up to you.

BTW, I used to have KG4's in my car, back in the day. LOL. Back then, my wife had Heresy's in the dining room and my son, (then 12), had Heresy's in his bedroom, while my first daughter had Heresys in hers. My son still has them and so does my Ex Wife. LOL. Hoever, my baby girl married an audiophile, and they have 50 speakers in their house and outdoors (also an 11.4 Atmos HT). What's even funnier is my baby girl, having grown up with Klipsch PRO stuff, like MWM's in the basement thinks that their living room speaker are way to small!! That makes me a proud papa, eh??

Now that earned an actual "Laugh Out Loud" from me.  That's fantastic!

As far as my test impressions go, take any opinion I have with a liberal block of salt.  Having tinnitus has ruined my "critical listening" ability, unfortunately.  I was a pro audio guy back in the day, but having a motorcycle tire blow up inches from my head put an end to all of that.  Nowadays, sound pressure levels trump most everything, with plenty of headroom coming in a close second.

  3. I am using a Bryston 4B NRB (Latest edition) to drive the Heresies, any opinion on this amp?

    https://www.stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/592bryston/index.html

This is the system for my office, where I am running digital SPDIF out to an Onkyo TX-SR700 7.1, and using the pre-outs to the Bryston.  If I want to do 2.1, I can turn off all the other speakers and only run the Heresies.  Most of the time, I listen to everything in surround mode:

    Front L&R:  KG4's.

Center: Two Quintets into the same center channel, on either side of the monitor angled 45 degrees inward.  They make an awesome "virtual" center.

    Mid L&R: KSF 8.5's.

Back L&R: The Heresies on a pre-out to the Bryston.

Sub: Cheap powered Polk.  I am looking for a reasonably priced Klipsch offering

I plan to do one Heresy first, and do a compare with the unaltered version.  It would not take too much more effort to swap polarities on the modded side to see if there is a difference.

Are these the ones your ordered instead?? If so, as PWK used to say: "There's not a dime's worth of difference."  Okay, so maybe a penny, but that's all. No need to get the ones in the original Super Heresy recipe for success.

Those are the exact ones that I ordered.  Thank you for the heads up, I wasn't too sure if the flared version would make any measurable difference in performance.

But just for clarity, you ARE planning on building a Type B network for your Super H's....correct?

Correct, a Cornwall "B", as a matter of fact.  I used those two networks to simply illustrate my question.  Woofers are ordered, along with all the caps, wire, and assorted goodies I need.  They are out of stock on the 4" flared tubes, so I picked up the other style of 4" to hold me over until they get more in stock.

  6. 9 minutes ago, ClaudeJ1 said:

Actually it's both. since, acoustically, the distance between drivers is uneven. Klipsch did measurements and they found it measured and sounded better with mid and tweet in reverse polarity as a better compromise.

Thanks for the answer.  I guess I am used to seeing capacitors and resistors on the positive / uphill side of the functional device, and it struck me as “wrong” when tracing from the device back to the origination point.  I will keep reading as much as I can find on the subject.

  7. I was looking at different crossover networks in preparation for building @ClaudeJ1 type "Super Heresys", and I'm not understanding something.  Below is the Heresy type E network, which shows a positive path for the woofer through an inductor, and into the speaker's positive terminal.  But then it shows the positive input being fed into a capacitor, and then through the autoformer to the negative side of the squawker and tweeter.  The second network diagram shows a type AA, where the positive path always goes to the positive terminals.

Why the difference?  (I apologize if this is something so normal that I should know the answer, but I haven't run into the answer in my reading as of yet.)  If there is a beginner primer covering this, I would appreciate any links or feedback.  Thank you in advance!

  8. Congratulations on both of you picking up the H1’s. I myself bought a beater pair on the cheap, with a thought of performing the @ClaudeJ1 upgrades, making them into an inexpensive set of mini Cornwall’s.  If I’ve learned one thing while reading his thread, it’s to follow his recipe exactly.

The Heresies are beat up, with some delamination of the plywood, and a couple of small strips missing on the outside of one.  This has helped me to decide to turn these into Road Warriors.  Re-glue and stabilize any layers of the ply that need it, metal corners and edge trim, Duratex coating applied, no grille covers, and a heavy duty grate style dome over the woofer. My wife is a professional musician, and I have a bit of experience with road gear, so this should be a lot of fun!

The mods themselves don’t look to be that difficult to perform.  New Delta Pro 12a woofers, new caps in the new values, move some wiring around, and port the back panel. Some sound deadening, and you are off to the races.  The only thing I am “adding” to the design is a fuse holder and 1amp fast blows inline.  Just to be safe.

  9. I don't have the relationship currency to spend right now on these, I wish I could.  I would make the 12 hour round trip for this pair!    $1,250.

  10. Here's an update:  I got the Heresy pair wired into the Bryston 4b, and they really DO blow the Bose 901's out of the water.  The sound is loud, crisp and fairly well focused.  Not bad for 40 year old speakers with the original crossovers, drivers, etc.

I had completely forgotten that I had another pair of Klipsch in my storage closet.  I will be adding in the KSF 8.5's to make the office a true 7.1 system.

Now I just need to find a pair of KG1's or 1.2's to replace the "ghost" center channel.  I had set up a pair of Bose cubes on stands, both wired to the same center channel.  Each of those are set up on either side of my monitor, angled inward.  It makes a good center speaker without setting anything directly in front of the monitor itself.  I would like to get the KG1's because they look like miniature versions of the KG4 front left and right.  I will then sell the cubes and stands on eBay, I think.

    Haha ... here's mine ... smaller, 12" woofer :D  Seriously thinking about a new box :)

That's a beautiful setup, Emile!  I bet it sounds very nice!

I would catch some serious wife aggro if I tried that in the living room.  *<;o)

  12. Can you turn the Yamaha over?  That should give you enough cable to run it behind the other speaker on the right side...

Never mind, that would leave the Yamaha logo upside down. Unless it could be flipped too...?

I tried to convince my wife that the Cornwalls would make great rear speakers.  She said we don't have the room.

My wife thinks that we will soon have to play hopscotch across the tops of our speakers to be able to get to the recliners.  She seems to think I buy a lot of audio equipment.

When were they built?  The builders and sanders started being required to stamp their builder/sander codes into the speakers rear in the mid-1970's so that the QC folks knew who to take it back to for "fixing" if needed.  I have no idea if they still do that or not...probably NOT.  But al the builders and sanders had alphabetical codes when I worked there from 76-83.  I am pretty sure, though, that once they transitioned to MDF panels for speakers, they stopped doing it, simply because of what happens when you try to stamp into MDF...it swells the panel at that particular point of the stamping.

This pair has a "T" code in the third position of the serial, so I am guessing 1979.

I probably built them...face the rear of one and to your left, follow the rear edge of that side panel up towards its miter-joint.  About an inch below the joint if you see the letter "A", then they were built by me.

I looked at the Heresy pair I picked up yesterday, and it looks like a number 8 in that spot on both speakers, does this signify someone specific?
