  1. Just purchased the new Abbey Road which includes an Atmos mix. I'm itching to hear it. I currently have a pair of La Scala II as my front speakers, some B&W bookshelves for surrounds, and two Rythmik subs.

If I were to add 2 or 4 Atmos speakers, what would you recommend?

I'm also open to replacing the B&W surrounds to better "match" whatever Atmos speakers i choose. So, a surround recommendation would be appreciated as well.

    Thanks!

  2. I use my La Scala speakers as the main speakers in a 4.2 surround sound setup with a Denon AVR and Emotiva 5-channel amp. I'm wondering...

    1. Is it possible (advisable) to use a separate amp for the FR/FL speakers and continue using either the Denon's internal amps or the Emotiva amp for the surround speakers?

    2. Is there a tube amp, maybe in the $1,000 or less range that would be an upgrade over what I'm using now?

    Thanks!

  3. No input sensitivitcontrol on my amp. But I do have a test disk and SPL meter handy so I’m going to mess around with that tomorrow.

FYI, the Audyssey FAQ describes the same two options you did. It doesn’t really seem to recommend one or the other.

BTW, after my first run of Audyssey + pulling out a few absorption panels things are already sounding much better - even without yet getting speaker levels fixed. Where it was sounding like the music was coming from two different speakers, I now have a soundstage that had me thinking I had a center channel again.

    Forward progresss!

  4. Thanks for that detailed explanation @GaryC

Is this the type of attenuator you were referring to: https://www.parts-express.com/harrison-labs-12-db-rca-line-level-audio-attenuator-pair--266-244. And I would need 6 pairs of these (2 fronts, 2 rears, 2 subs)?

What, if any, is the advantage to option #1 vs #2? I pretty much blew my budget on the LaScalas, so option #2 is definitely more appealing than option #1.

Also, pardon my ignorance but what is DEQ?

  5. Just starting to get a new pair of LaScala II speakers setup in my system. I have a Denon X3400H which has Audyssey XT32. No Center. Two Rythmik subs. Pair of small Boston Acoustic bookshelves for my surrounds. Primary listening is music (lots of 5.1 surround SACD and DVD-A). Main listening area is about 18’ x 22’ with a few nooks and a staircase up to the second floor.

First run of audyssey set fronts and rears to small with 60Hz crossover for the LaScala and 40Hz for the surrounds. Needless to say, this surprised me.

I’ve always been kind of disappointed in the amount of “midbass slam” from my system. I’m hoping for a bit more from the LaScala and curious what folks might recommend for bass management settings?

    Large or small?

    If small, what crossover level?

    LFE  + Main?

LPF for LFE at 120Hz or higher?

I also just bought the Audyssey app, so I can mess around with the curve. I’ve never done this before though. Any thoughts on settings here?

BTW, I attached the first try at correction results for the front left speaker.

Klipsch speakers [especially La Scalas and Khorns] are so efficient, that Audyssey may set them at a trim of -12 dB, the limit, and you won't know whether it would have set them even lower, if it could.  There are a couple of ways around that, so let me know if that happens to you, and I'll help.

    Hi @GaryC,

I finally got my LaScalas set up and just ran Audyssey for the first time. It did as you suggested it might and set the trim at -12 dB for each. Can you help?

    Thanks!

  7. I want to thank everyone that has weighed in with feedback. You all have given me so much (too much, really! 😁) to think about! Some things I have learned...

If I am willing to buy used, there are a lot of Klipsch heritage speakers in my price range.

Used KHorns would be an option for me if I were willing and able to either shrink OR expand my projector screen, and build a fake corner. Unfortunately, unless I want to be a single guy, I think this option is at least a few years in the future. 😁

I could afford brand new Forte III and still be within budget based on the amazing prices that @MetropolisLakeOutfittershas to offer.

LaScala are the next best thing - or maybe even better according to some - than the KHorn. They don't quite fit my space, but I could either (1) toe them in and out depending on how serious I plan to be in my listening OR (2) get creative with Audyssey XT32 per @garyrc

There is a Cornscala speaker option that is within my budget, and maybe sits somewhere between a Forte and a LaScala - both in size and sound? It kind of feels like I'm "cheating" if I go this route though. 😁

There is an awesome community of Klipsch fans that I will join once I pull the trigger on one of these options!! 🙂

  8. So, I thought I was sold on the idea of finding a pair of used LaScalas. However, when I approximated their size, I realized that if I toe them in at all, they end up blocking a fair amount of my screen. See images below.

From all I've, read it's pretty important to toe them in. Correct?

I suppose for movie watching I could point them straight and toe them in for serious music listening. A bit of a hassle, but maybe worth it?!

    Thoughts?

Cornscala's may just be the right fit for your budget. Bass may not be as tight but will go deeper anyways I often think bass is way over rated. Midrange is where music lives. You will have to finish them yourself but when you finished you will even more proud of them. If I wanted a big pair of speakers and did not have LaScala's I would seriously consider them or at least being a diy'er build a pair. https://critesspeakers.com/cornscala.html  Especially the 2 way pair with the big 2" driver.

I'm not too concerned about "deep bass." I have two subs that can handle that.

How would these Cornscala's mate with a pair of Rythmik sealed subs?

Do you happen to know the dimensions of the Cornscala?

Any other observations about the Cornscala sounds compared to the LaScala?

    Thanks!!
