  1. So how is it that the Pioneer 912 got loads of good reviews? Would you say that the HK 125 is better? It seems hard to go wrong for $180. In terms of loudness, I'm assuming that any of these will go as loud as I'll be wanting since it's my living room and I have a 4 year old who's sleeping while I watch most of my movies and TV. Clean and accurate sound is what I want.
  2. Thanks Burt, Looks like I could get the HK 125 from them for about $180 which is about the cheapest of all the models I'm considering. I think I'm leaning toward the Pioneer 812 or 912 though. Any reasons I shouldn't be?
  3. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Here's where I'm at. I ruled out the Panasonic. Can't get past the speaker clips and I'm not sure there are enough connections on the back for me, plus availability seems iffy right now. Here are my finalists and the approximate prices I've found: Pioneer VSX-D812 - $200 refurb, $245 new Pioneer VSX-D912 - $280 refurb, $325 new Pioneer Elite VSX-41 - $350 new Onkyo TX-SR501 - about $275 new HK 125 - about $210 refurb HK 130 - $270 new This still isn't a small list, so any help in narrowing it down will be appreciated. Any known issues/benefits to a particular receiver? The refurbs are all from the manufacturers, so I feel pretty comfortable with them. Thanks!
  4. Any suggestions on how to identify those models? ---------------- On 2/7/2004 8:43:34 PM ccsakura wrote: Some people found out that the lower end Pioneer(not elite series) recievers are made to some OEM's in radioshack like KLH. They are much cheaper than the original one which has Pioneer's tag on(like someone saw same as VSX-812K oem for $150). If you can find the OEM's one, they are great choices, otherwise it's just a little lost for buying them(u have to know what do they exactly have and what do they look like, this line are all sharing very similar looking than each other). ----------------
  5. Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming. ProDJ It's the receiver not the remote. I thought otherwise when it first happened and Kenwood sent me a new one. Still happened so I bought a universal. Duh! I eventually figured out (about 3 months after the warranty expired) that it was the receiver. One of the guys here suggested the tap on the top method, which worked for a long time, but it don't no more.
  6. I've got a Kenwood receiver (100x6) that has not responded to the remote for WAY too long. It used to be that I could tap the top and it would work for a few days at a time, now it just doesn't. I actually stand and walk across the room to adjust volume, which is simply not acceptable in this day and age. I've looked into repairs and discovered that it's bound to cost at least $100 and take 2+ weeks without my receiver at home. Anyway, I would like suggestions on a basic 5.1 receiver with all of the expected processing capabilities. I'm looking to spend no more than $300, which I realize is very little, but that's all I can justify since it's really just to keep me from standing to adjust volume.
  7. I've been away for ages, nice to see a lot of familar names! Cool to see what they mean. Mine is simply a nickname given to me as a fraternity pledge in college. They started with Eiffel (as in the tower) since I'm quite tall at 6'7". That was universally seen to be a lame nickname, so Tripod was born during a night of youthful exuberance. Yay, I used a big word!

  9. Why don't you have someone else store or use one pair for a couple of years. I know this sounds crazy, but if you wait a little while the kids will be old enough that you won't have to worry about them sharing space with the speakers.

  12. Justin points out that hifi.com is a storefront, but it should be noted that bose.com is as well. It's not as obvious, but they sell directly from their site too. Count me in the 75% who tried to lick their elbow. I'll bet the number is even higher among our biased sample.
  13. You're right about Philly, excellent street vendors. I'm sure other cities have good stuff as well, but I'm only familiar with Philly. I used to get Chinese food made to order for about $4, then a huge fresh fruit salad for about $2. Yum As far as wacky foods. I like chicken parm subs, with cheese lettuce and olives.
  14. Nice job Ranger, especially considering 15 minutes!

  16. Ranger, you have WAY too much time on your hands. But that is a great job and pretty funny. Where's Bin Laden in any of those pictures? Oh that's right, we're not supposed to ask that any more. must focus on Iraq must focus on Iraq
  17. John's hit the nail on the head with "stupid tax". They just got me with this scam too. I say scam because they clearly lead people to use credit cards knowing full well that our accounts don't handle it without an upgrade. Here's the kicker that you may not yet be aware of. Once you upgrade your account, they charge you the same damn fee even if the buyer uses a bank account to send you the money!!!! Paypal will let you upgrade and then downgrade your account one time for the lifetime of the account. I tried what you described and learned this. I recently wrapped up what I anticipate to be my last PayPal transaction. I'm sorry, but 2.9% is way too high, at least when checks are free.

That's a large chunk of metal.
  19. Tweeter is hopeless by me, and deserves to be dropped by Klipsch. I tend to visit during lunch breaks or after work, which means I'm wearing business dress clothes (shirt & tie, slacks, and lately, salt-encrusted dress shoes ). I'm 6'7", 30 years old, well-dressed and the dolts still ignore me. My typical response is to walk into the demo rooms and start up the systems myself. They hate that. To be honest, I actually prefer them to leave me alone most times since most of the guys have no idea what they are selling.
  20. Hey Justin, Glad to hear you're doing better and posting again. The panic room sounds cool, love that you can watch movies from it! Check out this link. I'd love to install one of these in our house, but our current place is small and there really aren't any appropriate entrances. Might be a cool entrance to your theater, make it harder for the bad guys to find you. Hidden Doors
  21. Moon, I've had several boats in my life, the most fitting names were POS (piece of ****) and PITA (pain in the ***). I love boats and will own others in the future, but man are they frustrating and expensive. The best was the day when I was walking down the beach and saw another boat named PITA. The owner and I had a great laugh. I aspire to own a Harley Fatboy in the future. Although I'm not really into guns, the Barrett .50 caliber rifles are appealing to me. I'll pick one up ($7500) after I win the lottery and can build my own 1000 yard range. Accuracy at 1000 yards?! That's insane! Other dreams include a personal luxury submarine. 22. I have the center channel from my Kenwood HTIB if you're interested. It sounds fine and fits the description you posted above. I also have the bookshelf fronts if you want to use them for surrounds. All three speakers are shielded. I'm still using the Kenwood surrounds with my current Klipsch center and fronts. I'll take pictures over the weekend and email them from work on Monday if you're interested. How about $50 for all three?
  23. They're supposed to be available some time in March. I'm sure reviews will be out shortly after that.
