  1. If you want it done right, often times you have to do it yourself. I can barely solder, unfortunately, and will be trying to remedy that someday. I hounded a friend to solder in my new Solen caps, and I was able to resolder wires on the transformer taps. I hope to upgrade the wire on the crossover someday when I'm feeling brave and or bored.
  2. Thanks for all the pictures and posts. Fully well agree Heresy suitable alternative to LaScala, especially if given a little help and TLC.
  3. I highly recommend replacing internal speaker wiring to the same as external speaker wiring. I noticed total internal wiring crossover to 3 drivers of my speakers is about 10 feet, the same as the length of my external speaker wiring. I find a change of one or both of these lengths to make a significant difference in the tonal quality of the sound and and the image quality.
  4. Best of luck with your project, hope they start squawking soon. I remember when I had LaScalas with K55Vs. One of the mid drivers kind of went bad: It made a distorted sound, but only on one particular song, always at the same point. It put me on edge, was always listening for the noise. Had the Heresy 1.5 sitting around unused, picked them up and never plugged them in because LaScala. So I think, hey there should be K55Vs in there, let's look. Well the Heresy 1.5 was a transition year from I to II, and had the K52, plastic horn. Boy was I disappointed. Later, when I started using the Heresy 1.5, grew to appreciate the K52, it was not as hot or in your face as the K55V, as others here have noted.
  5. Fully well agree with Chris and others room acoustics so very important to the sound and very often overlooked or addressed at all for casual listeners. Also agree set up can take some time to dial in, it seems every week I reset my speakers, then start nudging them around depending on how I hear that day. Could be earwax, though. I hear the secret word this week is bass traps, look for it.
  6. Agree, that is certainly a risk, or more like a certainty for Chinese manufacturing. On the other side, almost all manufacturing has migrated to China, and they are innovating at a very high pace most threatening to everyone else. I for one am grateful for this, recently picked up a Topping E30 DAC, amazed at both the high quality and very reasonable price. I shudder to think what the price of this caliber of DAC was in 1990s, or even currently domestically (looking at you, PS Audio).
  7. I believe this may true, generally. Better to keep a tight lid and make others work and reverse engineer rather than full disclosure that is seldom protected by legal recourse. There may be a middle ground to keep some things close, and disclose and patent others for "protection" and licensing.
  8. Schweet, this is the stuff I'm talkin' about, thanks.
  9. This sounds like a most interesting idea and to me would be more desirable and far easier to implement than other schemes to time align the drivers. Not even sure the effect or if it is necessary, so I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  10. This is a great thread I'm just starting to follow. My 1981 LaScala was similar, then the next year, Klipsch switched the mid driver. He then circled back to the K55. I had the opportunity to ask about the mid driver change, and he simply replied "Quality control" Any further insight on the continual transition (and non transition) of the drivers I find interesting. Best of luck with the project, very interesting.
  11. Fully well recognize you have a little, lot to say on the subject, no need to delete anything. I'm new to this forum game, but well amazed how hard it is to stay on topic or maintain a logical progression in the discussion. There always seems to be a fair amount of thread jacking, unrelated personal side discussions, and some that continually turn any conversation into a story about their favorite topic. I have no control over this, but wish things could stay a little more focused sometimes.
  12. No, we should combine with some other threads on semi related tangents
  13. Respectfully disagree. My main interests in gathering information on this forum was improving the sound of my Heresy 1.5 in my room. I've also had a lot of experience with the LaScala. I think the tangent to digital active crossovers and biamping or triamping is interesting, but not a tangent I'm particularly interested in. I am far more interested in the views on voicing the Heritage line in one's particular room or application. For me this has evolved over the years from blissfull ignorance and no changes to, wait, there's a reason I'm eq'ing the crap out of my sound now ? Upon realization of this, I thought it would be desireable to have the speaker voiced more to my liking in my room so I could use far less eq or none at all. I found it very interesting I was promptly castigated by one for this "sin". So I far one welcome a return to this angle rather than an unrelated tangent in active crossovers and multiamps well covered elsewhere in the forum.
  14. Thanks, dwilawyer. I found them (the tube traps) very superior to all the Sonex 2" foam squares I had overpopulating my room before. Then the Sonex disentigrated. If I may, I'll open up a thread next week with an explanation, plan, and pictures. Thanks again for your interest.
  15. And Hey, I really appreciate the changed tenor of this thread and discussion, you guys are the best, and I have a lot to learn and possibly share.
  16. Yes, I understand the desire for pictures to remove all doubt and all that and I have been responsive best I can to prior requests. But respectfully decline to share pictures of my inner sanctum. I believe my description is sufficient, enjoy fabricating my own stuff if possible to save U money. I'll encourage tube traps to those that can stand their towering presence, I believe there is no better way to control, delineate your bass, although room treatments are of course as varied as rooms.
  17. Well, I find component selection to be very personal and varied. I've never seen anyone with similar components. Preferred not be judged there on my preferences and selection. Fully well recognize the speakers, wires, amps must form a synergistic relationship, not sure what that means or exactly how it is employed, more just a random selection of cool gear one is drawn to.
  18. I'll share a brief description of my room treatment: 20' of homemade tube traps 17" diameter deployed in a sideways 8 pattern along the front wall. Something like this I = I = I. There is a floppy plastic diffuser in the tube traps to reflect back some high frequency energy. The tube traps provide superior bass resonance control, superior bass delineation. Otherwise a room just tends to be a large bass resonance chamber.
  19. Thanks for your interest. Of course I have a system and have shared a few pertinent details in my posts, but I prefer to avoid the system list thing.
  20. Um, Racer X is Speed Racer's estranged older brother Rex Racer. Wikipedia is an excellent source for stuff like this.
  21. And yes, I have carefully tuned my speaker placement and room treatments. I do not have the confidence to share, not sure how my experience here would help anyone else.
