  1. lol, tell me the fridge has got speakers in it too...then it would be complete
  2. ok first off, im not that stupid (or i'd like to think not)...there were no direct shorts...the speaker i was testing was just like any other speaker, just built outta normal household stuff (which meant the wire was a bit thicker, and thus less resistance and all that good stuff). but it still worked on the old butt 20w amp...anyways, i don't think it was the amps that blew because the volume knob was turned all the way down and it hadn't enough time to juice up (because it blew up when i pressed the power button)...the mere fact that the chassis was charged leads me to believe something inside came lose, and the short circuit through the chassis is what caused the sparks and smoke. i took the lid off to peak inside, and noticed a couple of them small black cylinder things had exploded. and just for the record, once i build a speaker that puts out something more than 20db, im gonna start building my own amps! but like that other guy said, u learn through failure...im on my 6th attempt with the speaker concept, and im already at 20db! 54 more speakers to go and i should have 200db, right? (and who cares about sound quality when the "best" in the house is bose?) lol so ya, where might i find transistors or watever it's called that makes solid state amps work? or where do i get the parts to build one? i think for my first try, im not gonna work with stuff plugged into the wall though i've been hit by 240v circuits before, but this one was worse for some reason...wouldn't wanna experience that again (unless it meant new equipment)
  3. it's not that easy though...im not trying to bash bose or anything, cause honestly they don't sound that bad...but they don't compare at all to some of the other stuff out there. at the moment, there's currently a pair of marantz 940's (old speaker from like the 70's) that my dad claims he can't hear the difference between them and the bose! and i would hold these speakers up against my friend's RF-3's! anyways, gotta take baby steps with the old man...at least he lets me stay at home while i finish up school if i played tennis with his bose, he's play it with the 940's! (and these things weigh 80lbs each) lol
  4. haha, yesterday afternoon i was building a speaker for a school project and i was experimenting with alternative ways to produce sound. well i finally got it all built and then decided to try and build another more conventional speaker (with a voice coil and all that good stuff...). well, i was doing all of my expermentation on an old tuntable/tape player thing from the 70's that puts out 20w or so...anyways, i decided why not hook up this cool speaker to my dad's Sony STR-AV1000 (that puts out 250w per channel into 4ohms)...so i plug in this speaker thing and press the power button to my amp (yes i had the volume all the way down and i knew i was prob less than 4ohms so i was gonna do a quick check so as not to burn the amps). well upon pressing the power button, the entire chassis built up an electrical charge and gave me an exciting shock (sending me back a few feet) and then sparks continued to fly everywhere and the smoke was thick enough to make me cough for an hour. so i unplug my "conventional" speaker (hehe, i knew it wasn't the cause, but no need to let the parents even think it was...), and then unplug everything and let my dad know the thing fried. ok here's the best part, that nite...my dad gets home right before i leave to go to my night class (where i would be showing off my speaker), and he asks me real quick like, "so, what are your suggestions on a new reciever?" haha, so im like go denon or HK (mentioned a few model numbers). when i got home from school, i was greeted with a brand new denon 1803 anyways, all that to say...i finally converted my dad off the sony tangent! now all i got left is to get him to get rid of his crappy bose4.2 speakers im tempted to 'accidently' blow them with the new reciever, but i'll need a creative excuse (besides my hand slipped on the volume knob...if indeed those ineffecient pieces of crap are capable of being blown) anyways, just one baby step closer to audio bliss...now all we need is some klipsch at home and then i'll be satisfied for a little while and then find something else to upgrade (like the PS2 dvd player)
  5. very cool...i live in aurora, right near naperville which means like a 20 minute drive at the most. i'll do some talking with the family and get back to you on this (im a bit excited because this would be my first klipsch purchase for my own personal use at home)
  6. whereabouts you located? i might be interested (more so the closer you are)
  7. so how much did it cost you? i've been looking at that exact same system for a while now.
  8. the only question i would ask is how are they blown? if the only problem is the speaker surrounds, there's plenty of DIY speaker surround repair kits available online (and they even provide clear directions and the tools necessary). but if it's something where they would need to be reconed or the drivers have been shot out, i would send it in to to klipsch or something like that.
  9. thrifting, eh? do people actually sell electronics at garage sales? cause if that's the case, im gonna hitch up with my mom or grandma and some of their friends when they go garage sale shopping so, any of you guys got tips in regards to the whole thrifting thing? it sounds like this might be something fun to do
  10. a friend of mine has come across a pair of speakers that he now wants to use with his pc/ht...the problem is he needs an amp to power them and isn't willing to spend much money on it (like under $50). anyways, i was wondering if any of u bright ppl on this forum knew of some places that might sell the raw parts necessary for building an amp (preferably solid state) or if any of y'all know of any cheap amps that cost that little. it would really only need to put out around 15-30 watts as these speakers are fairly sensitive and he doesn't listen to music loud anyway. i know something like this must exist because u can buy entire computer speaker sets for like $10 and they have 3 watt amplifiers in them. i've done a moderate amount of searching on ebay and on various electronic sites as well as in various electronics stores, but have found nothing. anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated!
  11. uh-oh...do i sense a fellow doctor who fan? hehe, sorry...im obsessed with that show (tom baker rocks! in fact, i got every episode with him on videotape). and just for the record, though i claim there's no difference in sound, i still end up using the same length cables. it just sits better in my head that way
  12. when i mentioned that sound goes like 3km/sec i was thinking about lightning striking and every 3 seconds is 1 mile (close to 1km)...but i did my math wrong cause 1km/3seconds = 333 m/s like you said what can i say? i was in the middle of a lecture and had to look like i was paying attention... anyways, lynm brings up a good point about a difference in resistance...i don't think it's a big issue here (as long as we're not using extremely thin wire), but it's something i never thought about. (hah, that's why i like this forum, every1 looks at stuff differently)
  13. since light travels at like 300,000 km/sec and electricity isn't that much slower...i don't think you will be able to notice a difference in the sound, especially considering that sound travels a mere 3km/sec. that means that a difference in length of cable would mean your speaker placement would have to be 18/100,000 feet closer for the sound to arrive at the same time. (this is all speculation, but i think it works out that way) anyways, all that to say, go ahead and use the shorter cable. but im sure others would tell ya otherwise.
  14. Aurora, Illinois...45 minute drive for me i think
  15. any suggestions on any particular models? i've listened to hundreds (well maybe just under a dozen) of "car-audio" speakers and they just don't cut it for me...i guess im a bit biased about speakers being horn loaded. great idea, i'll make my own speakers would i be able to buy "replacement" stuff from klipsch and just build them into my own boxes? dang it klipsch, come out with a car-audio line! i mean come on, they even got dvd's and stuff like that in cars now...
  16. are they still for sale? if so how much you asking for them?
  17. well since im in my car more often than im at home, i guess you could consider my car to be my home...and thus it makes sense to put home audio in my car but seriously, i think it's worth the risk...i was just hoping to hopefully get some helpful feedback from others in the klipsch world. guess i'll just give it a go and let y'all know how it turns out oh btw, i also thought about putting the promedia speakers or even the quintets, but i'm leaning towards the in-wall/in-cieling stuff cause of the lower frequency response...(hoping i won't need a sub, cause as far as im concerned subs in a car are just noise makers, but that's a diff topic). what ya think justin? i know you got like hundreds of promedia speakers, you think they would sound good in a car? (also, would it be too dificult to skip over the amp in the PM bass thing and power it's sub with a different amp. i don't have wall outlets in my car, nor a 120v power source) well while im at it, any1 know if the promedias drop the voltage to like around 12V inside the amp thing? i know all my pc speakers at home all use an external ac adapter thing and it puts out 12V for the speakers to use. cause if the promedias do this on the inside, then i might possibly be able to use the amps in em. i have some pro-audio speakers (the KP-2002) which is basically a 15" woofer with a big 'ol horn that i connected inside my parents mini-van...the band was doing a gig far away and it was a long drive...since the van don't have a cd player, i hooked up an amp to the cigarrete lighter and powered these bad boys with it so ya, all that to say i know klipsch sounds awesome in cars (bummer i didn't have more power for em though). ya, i thought about that when u mentioned putting some khorns in the back once i get outta college i plan on putting together a car thing where the sides fold out to create a stage and have all the cool stuff (like speakers) ready to go and powered by 120V...i saw this done in germany for the love parade, DJ's would just pull up, unfold, and it goes from there sorry for the long post, i tend to get giddy when i think about klipsch in my car, cause it'd just be so cool (or so i hope).
  18. or if you're lazy your local tweeter will build you speaker box things (for a hefty sum though)...mine cost $100 for 4 small boxes
  19. why not go with some hardcore hornloaded subs? i don't know of any, but they must exist. i can't remember where i saw it, but i saw a pic of a horn loaded sub that shaped the entire wall as a huge horn. it was loaded with a 30" driver being pushed with a couple thousand watts...cause if money ain't an issue, why don't you go overkill? i will try to locate that picture/site, it was so hardcore.
  20. i looked into the in-wall speakers but they seemed too large? what i really need is to find someone to let me try mounting them in my car and if it doesn't work to let me return them...y'all suppose tweeter would do that? (do they even carry the in-wall/in-ceiling line? the website doesn't) i don't think excessive heat will be as big a factor as the lower temperatures in the winter because i park outside. the bigger issue im worried about though is encasing the speakers...obviously they are designed to be mounted in a wall or ceiling. do they recquire that installation kit thing or can they just be attached to a speaker box like any other speaker?
  21. hey, i was wondering if any of y'all out there might be able to provide any insight or ideas concerning using the klipsch in-ceiling speakers inside a car. here's some questions i have: 1) if i built boxes for the speakers to mount them on my dashboard, would they need to be ported to maintain the frequency response? (like how exactly does the infinite baffel thing work?) 2) would i need to buy the installation kits? 3) would they be "aimed" correctly? 4) would weather conditions be an issue? i live near chicago which means weather hits all the extremes. 5) any1 know how good they sound? well that's all for now, im sure to have more questions later...i just wanted to get some imput before i go out and buy speakers and then have them not work.
  22. well i've been searching the internet for a couple hours now and have found no info regarding the old marantz 940 speakers. some mystery person has literally left a pair of them at my door to be used for whatever, but i know absolutely nothing about them. they seem like home theater type speakers, but the note i found on them suggested use in a sound reinforcement setting. i figured some of u audio freaks out there might know something about them or guide me elsewhere on the internet. i haven't tried pumping any volume through them yet (cause all my amps use 1/4" connections and these speakers use binding posts). i do know that these speakers be oldschool: 1) they're butt ugly brown, and 2) the woofers have dry rotted and have been blow madstyle. they gots cool knobs to adjust the volume of each of the speakers (woofer, mid range and 2 diff tweeters). the only thing i can think to do with this speakers is to take all them cool x-overs and slap some klipsch on 'em instead anyways, any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. oh ya, i did manage to find one crappy website that had a picture and some specs, but no interesting info: http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/0940.html i just reread what i wrote and realized i was a bit scatterbrained and im too lazy to rewrite...basically what im looking for is some1 who knows anything about these speakers or if they can give me some other resources to check out. thx!
  23. so did u have like a spare speaker/amp laying around or something? or did u just feed the "center" channel into both the left and right speakers?
  24. ya, wrong forum but what the heck does the cmss actually do? (i already know it adds the center channel, but it changes the sound too or something) to me, it sounds like carp, but then again so are my pc speakers so i guess it's better to say it sounds like worse carp.
  25. lol, i've had that picture (the first one) as my pc's desktop ever since ya made your post justin everyday it's there to remind me of something i really want to get, but probably never will
