I think this is more of a novelty than anything. Every tube amplifier I've owned that had this functionality never sounded better in triode. Yes, you get a lusher midrange, but at the expense of everything else. The only way to do triode is with a triode tube. Not a pentode.

The real problem I see is the difficulty designing for both modes since finer tuning is different for triode and ultralinear, it takes more than just a simple switch between the tube and OPTs.

FWIW I had a Line Magnetic LM216IA that I preferred in triode.

At my listening levels in my system there was no difference between 22 watts and 38.

Is Mr Helmholzs work discredited ???

Yes when AS came into existence. 😉

Before Novak and later Thiele and Small knowing a box could be used as resonator didn't automatically mean good sound.

Open baffle/panel speakers have existed for a very long time, probably all the way back to 1924? and the first moving coil loudspeaker.

It would be "putting Gold Hubcaps on a Volkswagen" ...

I assume most members here are like me and given the choice between a crappy non musical subwoofer or no subwoofer the choice would be no subwoofer.

So maybe more like putting large spongy wheels on a VW.

I haven't.  But funny thing, I just saw your message and also just this second sat down to the PC to start looking for a good sub.  My DAC/preamp has a pair of balanced outputs available; or I would have to use a splitter on the RCA's to connect to a subwoofer.   Please share any thoughts you have about how it should/would/might work.  Thanx. Rob

Not a lot of XLR subwoofers so xlr to rca cables for sub, rca for both with Y cables, or subwoofers with speaker level inputs.

Besides the tubes, does anyone know what modifications are in the Horn Mono's that make them more suitable for horn speakers?  That would be good info to have to teach me more about horn speakers and what I have with the  H-IV's.  I

DIY but should be able to find someone build it for you if needed. Built amps often come up for sale.

Victor might be able to help: https://www.vkmusic.ca/

Dennis Had Inspire (search on Ebay) will build one of his for you.

He is retired after starting several successful businesses including Cary Audio.

It is also possible that someone may have at one time glued the access cover closed on some speakers, causing grief for the next person that wanted to get in.

I had to make new ones after I destroyed the original panels because they had been glued.

The guy that did it was a wood worker/finisher and obviously not a speaker guy.

He put the 17? screws back in and fortunately only used a little glue near the edges so I was able to get it off without damaging the wood inside.

  8. In REL's own words:

"While it might trade off a touch of the speed, clarity, and deepest bass that our standard models, like the T/9x, are known for,......"

^ Would cause me* to pass and get a different model to pair with La Scalas.
