  1. Did it myself on my KG4s and it was worth it. But what a pain getting those bigger (especially the Solen caps) components onto that PC board). Hope the board on the F/C/Q's is bigger!
  2. Im gegenteil, mein Kumpel! I just poured myself some more apple schnapps!
  3. Upgraded the caps and inductors on my KG4s and they sound much better, especially with challenging material. Sure was a b#$@h getting those big Solens on that little PC board, though! If I had a set of Forte's or Chorus' (how the hell am I gonna find them in Korea, the Land of Not Quite Right) the first thing I would do is upgrade the crossover components.
  4. Count your blessings GMan! Wait 'til baby is 15 years old and wants to date "wonderboy" with pierced eyebrows and everywhere else! Now, since you have a daughter, I'll let you in on a little secret! Continue being a great dad to her, and later (maybe even sooner) you will have a tremendous ally in the house. I changed my daughter's diapers in the middle of the night and her first words were "Dada". I've got two buddies who have similarly laden care and affection and their daughters and these girls NEVER fail to take Dad's side in a dispute with mom. Daughters aren't only great themselves, they can be priceless allies! Persevere, and she'll be asking you to crank up the Brahms. Fail in this and, you will never, ever be able to listen to your Klipsches again!
  5. No, hemi's are always right! Friends don't let friends drive Chevy's!
  6. Yes, I am the official poster boy for PGBWS: "Post Germany Beer Withdrawal Syndrome".
  7. Thanks for the warning! I almost bought the DVD! If you want to meet convincing vampire women, come visit me in korea and I'll introduce you to a few (hundred)
  8. Sorry for 3 posts. My internet connection is acting up on me. As far as amps go, a "Van Alstine" modified Dynaco ST70 driving KT88's might have the sound you're looking for, within budget. Problem with the stock ST70 is that the bass is often flabby. Jolida makes some KT88 amps for reasonable money, any of you guys have an opinion? Never owned a Scott amp, but I think the guys here are recommending it with good reason. Own lots of Fisher, and it's great stuff. However, when I study photo's of Scott stuff I've seen online, I get the impression they might be a little bit better built than the Fisher.
  9. Think a main difference between a Forte and ForteII is that the Forte has a 12" passive radiator and the ForteII's is 15" Pretty sure the Chorus is bass-reflex via front firing tubes while the ChorusII uses a rear-mounted passive radiator.
  10. Natgun, 100% agree with maxg's recommendations, especially concerning the Forte's. I'd like to get my hands on a set of Forte II's or ChorusII's myself. Several years ago in Korea, I shared a barracks suite with a dude who threw a party one Saturday night. He was blasting a song with the lyrics "I'm a baaaaad maaaan" throughout the whole dorm with his Fortes, while everyone was downing a greenish-white concoction called "White Dog" out of a cooler jug. I thought the concrete was gonna crack, the Forte's power was so freaking outrageous!! We all woke up with hangovers to the fact that whether we were "bad men" or not, we were certainly HURTING men. A KT-88 amp is absolutely the way to go for cranking up rock, I'm gonna rebuild my Dyna's this way. However, should you decide for some reason to go solid state, give an old (pre-1980) Marantz amp or receiver a listen. You'd probably want to go 70wpc or more. I can assure you the bass from my 2385 receiver is prodigious with my little KG4's. Paired with Forte's or Choruses, it would be absolutely brutal!... (my Marantz 2385 cost me $280)
  11. Now you did it! You posted the link to www.mcmelectronics.com, and I can see i'll be there for days! I've just got to add some more have finished projects to my junk room! I love the smell of solder in the morning, it's the smell of victory!
  12. Hey, this thread has potential, totally off topic in less than one page! Folks, we could be witnessing the birth of the next "Hofy's" here......
  13. While at heart I'm a tubehead, I'd like to toss in my vote for vintage Marantz SS. Was running my KG4's with a 2220b 2x20wpc which provide great detail, but the receiver was obviously working hard at high listening levels. Swapped it out a few months back for a Marantz 2385 2x185wpc and what a difference! The 2385 takes over the situation like a 900 lb. gorilla! Handles everything without breathing hard and never sounds harsh. A previous poster mentioned Dynaco ST-70's. The stock ST-70's bass gets a little flabby at times. I would not purchase a Dyna without anticipating going through the unit completely. By the time you've done that, you'll realize some upgrades are in order. There are a myriad of mod's for and opinions about the Dyna ST-70 out there, so prepare to be confused. It's helpful to remember that it was designed to a price point (unlike the Fisher 400 I own) and thus possesses some compromises. Haven't touched a thing with the 2385, though, totally plug and play!
  14. $800! I've seen LaScala's go for less than that on Ebay!
  15. Actually, we celebrated with the JW Blue because the divorce was rough, REAL rough! She (a Korean national, btw) caused him to spend 23 days in the lock-up by writing hot checks behind his back. She also made his life a living hell for him during their last year "together" by getting all the korean locals to spy on him and rat him out. I never saw a rougher divorce, truly movie material! Anyway, he's back in the States and she emails him from Korea now asking if she can come be his "roommate". Yeah Right! I've got a korean fiancee right now, but I always keep an eye out for the long knives....
  16. If you like Bach, this set is unbeatable for the price, the performances are decent, and from what I've listened to so far, well mastered. http://fibermaven.zoovy.com/product/BR160BACH $160 for all of Bach, Das Gesamtwerk! That's $1 per CD!
  17. That was the NCO club at Zaragoza AB, Spain. I was too drunk to remember the particular incident. Never had a better sippin' whiskey than Johnny Walker Blue Label. My buddy and I finished off a bottle one night. He bought to it celebrate his divorce. Man, was that smooth!
  18. I drink scotch because I learned that noone would steal my drink. I also enjoy the faces women make when they take a whiff
  19. I'm a retired USAF Master Sergeant (old school). While deployed to France in support of NATO operations in Bosnia ('95-96), I was at times referred to as "that crusty old *&%@ Master Sergeant" (strangely enough, to the French, I was a Warrant Officer, since they don't have senior NCO's)
  20. Yup, everyone's got an opinion. My 2 cents: I'm only running 2 channels, but the bass on my 1970's vintage Marantz 2385 is prodigious and the music is warm.
  21. I've got a friend also who used to love Bose. After listening to my Marantz 2220b driving KG4's the only thing he said was something like "Shouldn't have too much trouble getting rid of my Boses...." He's running Suse Linux 8.0. This reply was was written with Mandrake Linux 9.0. Friends don't let friends run Bose.... (However, I do own a Bose Acoustic Wave Radio, a great instant-party-box. Maybe I have Multiple Personality Disorder)
  22. On the personal front, my 2 cents is take your time. It's been seven years since since I started my divorce, but my fiancee is a wonderful girl and has been worth every minute of the wait. Good hunting!
  23. Sorry to hear about the divorce, went through mine 5 years ago. Wholeheartedly agree with Greg concerning building the 2-channel system first. Sounds like going to tubes might be a little much for you right now. Short definitions, SET=Single Ended Triode; great, pure sound, low power. PP=Push-Pull More power, a bit more distortion then SET due to more complex circuit design. If you decide to go solid-state I suggest pre-1980 Marantz equipment. Well built and reasonably priced these days. Vintage Marantz receivers are noted for their musicality, warm sound and conservative power rating. The last three numbers of a Marantz indicate the rated watts per channel. 2220=20 watts, 2270=70 watts, 2385=185 watts, etc. Quad receivers were also made such as the 4420, 4440, etc. Auditioning various models with your speakers would be best, but my guess that something close to a 2270 would work well with Cornwalls or Heresies. Someone else on the forum with a Marantz/Klipsch setup might have better educated suggestions. I'm driving my KG4's with a 2385 and it's a very musical combination.
  24. Sorry, about the multiple replies, I'm having trouble with my internet connection and pushed the "submit" button too many times. Don't seem to have the option to delete a post. Have you considered the Forte, Quartet or Chorus? They've got a pretty big sound and I suspect the lawyers are going to make sure you don't have the cash for Heresies or Cornwalls lying around. I could have bought a set of Khorns with the money I spent on my divorce.
