  1. I don't know what I am going to do with it yet. It is all so pretty that I will probably find a spot for all of it in my house. But I may decide to sell it. I will take some more pics later. I have never seen insides so clean. The chrome is all perfect and all of the RCA's have no discolorization at all. This was a pretty rare find. All of the equipment was just serviced too. It is worth more than what I paid, but not a landslide more. I still need to listen to it on some of my speakers. I will probably keep all of it though. For an audio guy this is the same as my wife putting pretty flowers and vases around the house. Its all really nice to look at too.
  2. I just picked up a mint Mac 1900 that I may sell but 45 wpc may not be enough for 88 db speakers. Depends on the size of the room. Edit: Oops, 5100, wrong Mac.
  3. You have to be kidding. The muscle car had to be killed before it killed us. I have owned 6 muscle cars and don't miss them at all. You can now buy a 500 HP (rear wheel, not flywheel) Corvette that gets 30 mpg and pollutes less while driving than a muscle car did just sitting there. A Nissan Maxima has more power than a 69 Camaro SS 350. What exactly do you miss? The american auto industry had to be slapped into shape. They eventually learned that if you burn as much of the fuel as possible and capture as much heat energy as possible, you will make way more power and beter mileage. Now, saving the kinetic energy (hybred) is the big thing. It will only get better. If you live in one of the valleys out west and cannot see the mountains on certain days you would understand. A big part of my job is water and environmental law. If properly managed, we all need these regs.
  4. I went skiing and stopped by a local record store that I always visit. My wife gets her hair done nearby and I complained that she should try to make an appointment at the location in the nicer part of town. Well, I went to the record store to blow a few hours and pick up soem CD's. Older place and a little run down but very neat and clean. Lots of character and a fun place to visit. I never expect to find anything equipment wise. Well, I went in this weekend and there are some vintage Mcintosh. I speak to the owner and there is a "tube" amp in back. It turns out to be SS, but hey, how can I compalin. I told my wife about it but that I was hesitating. She said that if I kept thinking about it I should go back and buy all of it. I honestly have never seen vintage equipment this clean. I had to buy it all. I wound up with a C26 preamp, a 2100 power amp and a 5100 integrated amp. The innards are perfect and shiny new. Everything just serviced by a local tech too. I need to rethink a few rooms here but I am very happy with this score.
  5. I am about to re-cap a pair of speakers and need 7 uF and 9 uF caps. I was going to use 6.8 uf and 9.1's because that is what is available. Because fo the loose tolerances in Caps (5%, 10%) I am assuming that this will not be a problem.
  6. I am looking at getting some higher end planars. If you want to experiment with ribbons I have a mint pair of maggies that I wil sell for $300.
  7. That's not good. I figure the "390" is Great Plains in-house improvement of a "290" and that's why they named it so. What driver can go to 300 safely and still make it to above 6000?
  8. I have a coupel of them but for $100 or so each I want to hang on to them for now. I have a mint Crown D75 that I will let go. Do you need 2 channels or three?
  9. 4000 hz is kind of low isn't it? I read that 5700 (as in he big heritage) is kind of low to cross over. The Great Plains part is the 390. 300 to 8000 Phenolic, 1.4" throat, 120 watts $325 each.
  10. Hey, They go for $35,000 in Japan. Read the ad. This is a bargain. I want to start exporting K Horns to Japan. My ticket to retirement.
  11. Your caps shoudl be fine, but a few 2 uF Sonicaps are cheap. I mount circuitboard to a piece of wood and then solder jumpers to solderign lugs. I attached a photo of soem JBL crossovers that I re-capped.
  12. I installed a low velocity Panaflow fan and it cannoe be heard at all. They sell them at Digikey.
  13. Great Plains makes a 1.4" throat driver that goes down to 300Hz and has phenolic diaphragms. You need to call them because its not on their site. They are $325 each. If you buy a pair, please report back.
  14. Ki, You have a fine example of each format there. You have sparked my curiosity. I have all of the parts to put together a pair of "super K Horns" using JBL drivers and a speakerlab bass bin. I'll have to pursue that project.
  15. I do almost all of my listening at about 75 db or so and do not find a loss of detail. You have both speakers, so you can do a direct comparison, but I have found the B&W's to retreive way more info than my K Horns ever did. One way that I can tell is that I had a piece of equipment in my audio chain that sounded just great with the K Horns and my Belles. When I hooked that same piece of equipment to my B&W's, I realized that I had to get rid of it because I could hear so much hiss and noise that I had never heard before. I found this very interesting because the K Horns are about 12 db more efficient. Maybe it was the K77 tweeters.
  16. That's funny. I have never had the urge to upgrade from the N series, mostly because a $6,000 bump for tweeters, which may or may not make a difference, is excessive. Here is what I think is so funny. On the B&W forum, the latest product and whatever the salesman says is the ticket is the rule. Every manufacturer is so lucky because their products just keep gettign better and they never take a step backwards! How lucky is that, especially for the marketing folks. I've got a bunch of crappy equipment from about 2000 to 2003. I really need to update 'cuz teh new stuff is always much better. Here a few funny topics there. I am refurbishing crossovers on an older pair of B&W's and wanted to know what kind of caps B&W uses now. I was informed that caps can change the speakers sound and that I really should keep my 22 year old caps. Next one, just today someone mentioned that they use a Conrad Johnson preamp with a Krell amp and it works great because the Conrad tames the Krell's highs. He was warned that you shopuld never mix BRANDS between preamps and power amps. Not even tubes and SS, but BRANDS!! This is clearly fear of what they do not understand.
  17. Nice assortment of speakers! You have quite a choice there. I do not listen loud, but I run Bryston 7B ST's and they do not get very hot with the N801's. I run a Behringer EQ for room correction. It is funny, I ran the pink noise and use the curve that was obtained. There is a pretty big imporvement in midrange, which I assume is my room. A definate improvement in clarity. I never noticed a shortcomming, and I ususlly forget if I have it on, but when I switch it on, there is a definite and immediate improvement. Give one a try.
