  1. So what do you think about the KSS monoblocks? I am obviously new to the tube game. I see that a lot of people reccomend a scott tube receiver. I could use that for the K horns, and run my turntable and DBX 3BX on that, then use the Denon 5800 for digital sources. But then it still seems like the SS "problem" is still there. Quite honestly, the new receiver and K-horns sound great, I am just wondering if there is another level that I am missing. I have one more question. Because the new Denon 5800 receiver has no provision for moving coil phono, I was considering getting rid of my Denon DF33 Turntable and 3bx. Compared to the digital sources, the records sound "flat," even when expanded. (right now I am running the turntable through an older Denon receiver so that the MC phono works). Should I hang on to it? Chris
  2. I have a set of K-horns that I am running with a Denon 5800 receiver. I have 4 heresy's that will be used for surround when I finally get them hooked up. I keep hearing how great tubes and/or parasound equipemnt is and was wondering if adding some equipment would lead to an improvement for 2 channel listening. my receiver has a "direct mode" for stereo listening that basically bypasses everything. it also has pre-outs. the following equipemnt is available locally: KSS 100's Mono amps, 105 class A watts each. All new tubes. Teflon wiring, extra tubes. Mint. New $10,000 pair. Sell $1250 pair. HIGH END-AUDIOPHILE Parasound Halo pre-amp & amp, Sony ES CD, PSB Image towers & sub, Monster powercenter & cables, 3 months old. $4600 list; sell $2600. I was wondering if the KSS amps would make a difference since the signal going to it is still being processed through the SS Denon. The imaging and headroom that I have now is fantastic, and the denon seems quiet, even with speakers this efficient. The denon with the K-horns also seems to have infinite power but I keep hearing how good the tubes are from all of you guys. If not, is the parasound worth it for the price if I use it in conjunction with my Denon? I really don't want to spend the money right now, but if the KSS amps are something that I will have for 20 years, it is worth it. Any thoughts? Chris
  3. Here is an ad from our local paper today: SURROUND SOUND STEREO EQUIPMENT SYS. 100 watt. $350. (702)893-3320 I have no idea what it is, but you are probably looking at $200 to $250, so even if they don't have a DVD, you will have money left over to get one. Here is another ad: Speaker Surround Sound System, 4 kef series speakers &Infinity center channel speaker, Paid over $1000, $275 OBO 896-6963. The speakers sounded decent, but were extremely pale in comparison to the Heresy that I brought with me. But, in your budget, these are excellent speakers. before I get attacked by everyone, my personal reccomendation with a $350 budget is get a set of heresy's, and enjoy polishing them every day until you can afford a decent receiver. That being said, this guy has had these for sale for a few months and would probably take $200 or maybe less for the five speakers. Anyway, check your local newspaper classifieds. You should be able to access them online. ad them to your "favorites" and brouse every day. In any case, it is interesting to see how much things go for, and the prices after negotiation are always less than ebay (too many buyers at any time on ebay drives the price up, and you don't get to audition first plus there is that whole shipping thing and pay before you buy, etc...). Happy hunting!! Chris
  4. There is a whole world that you have not explored that will solve your problem. at the price that you are talking about, look into used equipmenet in your local classifieds. There are a lot of people out there that upgrade every year and sell pristine equipment for 30% or less of new price. here are the results taht I got: a friend of mine has a huge house that can support a full on theater room upstairs and surround sound downstairs. for $600 I got her a top of the line sony receiver (last years model), a yamaha 5.1 surround receiver, 5 yamaha mini speakers and matching sub, and a panasonic 5 disc dvd player. The guy had everything but the DVD listed in 2 ads for $385 each ($770 total) When I said that I wanted the whole lot, he mentioned the dvd. he had used it 2 times then realized that he needed a progressive scan. the plastic bags were not even broken. Anyway, he threw it in and the whoel package was $600. In a different transaction, for her upstairs I got her a Set of RF7's, a 12" sub, center and 2 rears and stands (all Klipsch - I forgot the other model numbers)for $1600. This stuff was all 6 months old. By the way in the same transaction, I got a Denon 5800 receiver (1 year old) for $1100 for myself. He didn't have it listed, but I chated with him for a while and he mentioned that he would not mind upgrading. The guy was so happy to get the $2700 total, that he threw in a JBL 12 powered sub, a kenwood car amp and a bandpass box to get them out of his garage. The moral here is that in this budget, you really can't get anything decent new. Find a guy that has a receiver and speakers that he is itching to part with and you can probably stay in your budget and get them something that will not hurt your ears when you visit (and you will be their hero). One last thing, if someone has some nice stuff for sale, call and ask if they have anything else, that is how I got my second set of heresy's for surround. Just a thought, Chris
  5. Chris, Thanks!! I am out of town right now, but I just need enough to re-do a set of Heresy's. I will measure when I get home. please drop me an email. Chris I've got tons ... Tell me how much you need and I'll clip it and send it along. Just pay the shipping. It's Thanksgiving and I'm in the "giving" mood. Random acts of kindness. Got any NOS?
  6. I'm sure that this has been asked before. Where can I get some black grill cloth for a pair of heresy's? Klipsch no longer carries it. Thanks, Chris
  7. Is that the same stuff that they use on teh Heresys and K Horns?? I am looking for enough to re-cloth a set of Heresys. Chris
  8. Thanks for the info. I see that even WXGA does not have enough resolution at 1366 x 768. I guess the wait will be longer than I expected. Chris
  9. Does anyone khow what an HDTV signal's native resolution is (in computer resolution)? I have a Sharp SVGA projector (800 x 600). I want to upgrade, but want to buy something that won't become outdated too quickly. The XGA's are pretty affordable right now, but I want to buy something that has more pixels than the HDTV signal. Do I need to go to SXGA or WXGA to get more pixels than the HDTV signal? I know that projectors can compress the signal well (Epson and NEC are supposed to be really good at this). But the way that computer products depreciate, I would like to know what the HDTV's signal resolution is, then wait for the proper projector to come down in price so that I only have to buy once. By the way, everyone should appreciate this. Here is how I conviced myself that I "needed" a projector. There was a used set of Heresy's in the paper. Considering what a new set of Heresy's cost, I had to buy the used ones, It would cost me money not to!! (even though I really wasn't even in the market for another set of speakers) OK, now I've got there Heresy's and need to figure out what to do with them. They would make a great center channel. But wait, they are not magnetically shielded. OK, this is easy to fix, replace the TV with a projector, then shielding would not be a problem. To quote a line from The Big Chill, "rationalizations are more important than sex, did you ever try to go more than a day without a rationalization?" Anyway, any help with the resolution question would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris
  10. oh yea, I forgot to add that you can get a 300" picture. if you have 14' from the projector, you can get over 100". also, the projector does not have to be centered. you can hang it high up and a correction system makes the pic square on the wall. for a screen, you can project on the wall (kind of tacky), buy a screen, or mount some painted drywall with a fancy wood frame (if you are good at fabricating) Chris
  11. let me try to steer you into a different direction. go to presentingsolutions.com and look at the NEC45vt (or vt45??) projector. It is HDTV ready, and supposed to be an excellent projector for the price. at 1200 lumens, daytime viewing is not a problem. the unit is svgs (800 x 600) but compresses higher resolution really well. the only caution that I have is that the bulbs in projectors last abotu 1500 to 3000 hours depending on the model that you pick and replacement is about $400. otherwise, the coolness factor is there. A friend of mine has an old sharp professional unit that he puts in his backyard for fights. We watch on a kingsized sheet stretched around a wood frame. (about a 13' screen) The NEC unit is small enough to put wherever you want to move it to. the last thing is that you will need a surround receiver and a separate tuner (cable box, dish, or a vcr with a built in tuner) but this stuff should not be a problem. anyway, this is an option to think about. I have been researching it for a while. Chris
  12. I just picked up a set of k-horns in "tigerwood." Is this the same as zebrawood. The serial number tags are ripped so I cannot tell what the original wood was called. Thanks, chris
  13. what am I looking at for the heresy's delivered to zip 89123? what kind of shape are they in and do you have pics? chris
  14. I am a big Denon fan. I have heard that for the money (about $400 to $500) the 1600 (single disc unit) is hard to beat. I was interested in the 3800 and the salesman, a hardcore fanatic, kept steering me toward the 1600, saying that for the $$, it could not be beat. It is progressive scan, with all of the bells and whistles, but unlike lower models, does not use Panasonic guts. He said that the 3800 was overpriced for what it does, and the top of the line unit is awesome, but at $3K+, kind of excessive. Sorry that I cannot help you on the technical side, but I am just getting into video after playing with audio for 15 years. Chris
  15. OK, I've been re-thinking this. First, I saw a Terratec DMX6Fire card on ebay starting at $200. If this thing goes for close to that, is this a good deal? Next, I was going to buy a Denon DVD player. After thinking about it, if I can build a good computer that has great sound and video cards, with a DVD and CDR I may be ahead of the game. What do you reccomend? I don't mind spending some $$, but I don't want to have to keep upgrading (same rationalle behind buying the Klipsch speakers) I am using a projector and need component video out. Thanks, Chris
  16. Thanks for the advice. I have a Pentium II 233 MHZ that I really don't use. The motherboard has a 66 mhz bus and the system has 64 sdram. I think that the hard drive is a 6.4 gig. This computer will be used just for music to my stereo. If I add RAM up to the 512 that the board can handle and maybe get a 300 MHZ chip (this is the most that the board can handle with the 66 mhz bus - this might not be worth it), can I put one of the sound cards that you reccomend and get good results. As with any computer, I would rather upgrade the whole system later b/c of the way prices drop. Thanks, Chris
  17. I was worried about my 170 WPC Denon for my K-horns and Heresys. Don't worry. If the equipment has other features that you like, just figure that you have more dynamic headroom. Your receiver probably has a limiter to restrict power to the speakers. With the Klipsch, your amp will probably barely get warm, which is kind of nice. Chris
  18. I want to set up a computer with MP3's that I can hook it up to my Denon 5800 receiver. I would like to send a direct digital signal to the receiver, then let it do the conversion. I think that a fiber optic output or at least a digital phono cord output will be necessary. Additionally, to record my CD's in MP3 format (onto the computer hard drive), I would like to use my denon CD player through the receiver and then into the sound card because I doubt that I can find a computer CD that is comparabe for a reasonable price. I think that an extremely high signal to noise ratio is necessary b/c the Kliposch speakers are so efficient, but what else should I look for? Can anyone reccomend a card that will work well for this that is not too expensive (I just looked at one that was $3K--ouch, I was thinking a couple hundered bucks for a card). I plan on having a dedicated pc system for the stereo. I also want to know what other specs that I should look for (processor speed, etc) Any help would be appreciated. Thnaks Chris
  19. I had a set of KLF 30 for about 2 months before trading them in. I swore that they were too harsh in the mids and went back to my JBL L60's. I recently bought some Heresys and and had the same problem wirth the mid being too bright (although not harsh like the KLF's). I was really disappointed and ready to sell them when I finally heard the heresy's on a different amp. They were increadible, the vocals were so clear and lifelike. The receiver that I was running is a 13 year old Denon AVR-95A. The moral, hook them up to a better amp and they should sound better. I do have one question, did you buy them new?? If so, take them back and buy a used set of K horns. I just bought a set and they are fantastic. (they are also hooked up to Denon 5800 receiver that 2 sets of Heresys will be surround speakers for). The K horns even sounded great on the older receiver, although a little bright. Just make sure that you have corners to place them in and a big room. If you bought the KLF's used, sell them and buy a set of used Heresy's. You should have enough $$ left over for a powered sub and you will have a set of speakers that you can use for a lifetime and fantastic sound. Anyway, I hope this helps.
  20. About the no reserve ebay auction, I had a guy selling video projectors, no resereve, pull two auctions within 1/2 hour of close. I sent an email to ebay and they could care less. Their response was that a seller can pull an auction if they want. By the way, this is my first post to this website. In the last 2 months, I have added a set of Khorns and 2 pair of Heresys to my system. It's great to live a childhood dream and own these. This was my first upgrade in 15 years. Has anyone ever heard of Tigerwood as an optional finish on teh Khorns. They look great.
