  1. I see here that some people are saying that SET amps are for 80 or 85 db listening levels. Doesn't it matter a whole lot where exactly the listener is sitting in relation to the speakers? Doesn't it matter a whole lot the efficiency of the speakers? If my Khorns are 104db/1 watt/1 meter, then 3 watts ought to be getting pretty close to 108 db/1 meter. Back up a few feet and I'm still enjoying a fairly brisk volume level. Certainly more than 85db. As my ears get older, the toll of high volume listening over the years is showing more and more. I can't tolerate much more than what my SET/Khorn combo is producing right now for volume. The only needs for more power at this point is headroom, the occasional spurt of higher volume listening, and to push boosted bass frequencies . . . . But how to do that without giving up the wonderful SET sound that I'm so enjoying right now? Of course, I've only tried a few different tube amps, it may be that I'd be just as happy with the sound quality from a nice PP amp or integrated, especially with a little more power. I didn't go from PP to SET as so many other did, my only extended experience with tubes is SET. Thanks to this forum, even with the childish bantering, there is an overwhelming amount of information available, and the possibities for experimenting seem endless. Greg
  2. I've dealt with UPS quite a few times for damage. First, UPS will want to determine if the item was packaged properly. They will come to your house to see the speaker and ALL the packing material it was in. If they determine that the speaker was packaged correctly and damage is their fault, then they will put a claim through their insurance company for the damage. All payments go to the seller, so it's important that you have a good relationship with the seller if you plan to keep the speaker. You might consider shipping them back to the seller and let the seller collect on the insurance. If the damage is determined to be UPS' fault, then they'll cover the shipping cost back to the seller. But it's important to realize that if you keep the speakers, you'll be relying solely on the seller to pay you the damages. This is a process, and you may find that the seller is very cooperative now, but may not be after going through this process. If UPS determines that the speaker was damaged because it was not packed properly, then I would definately send them back to the seller and demand a refund, including shipping. Good luck! I do think that you're better off having dealt with someone from the forum. Be patient and understanding, you and the seller are both going to be on edge about this, and it's going to be real easy to push the wrong button. If UPS puts a claim through, the seller will get a form to fill out. They will ask if the unit can be repaired or replaced. They don't offer a cash settlement on the form, but I've had some luck working with a representative from UPS who works a little higher up than the people at the 1-800 number, to work out a settlement. That is, paying the seller for damage without a repair estimate, and without replacing the speaker. The seller needs to remember to put the cost of shipping in with the estimate on the form. There's more to it than I'm explaining, but that's all I can think of right now. If you have specific questions or are having problems, email me glroberts@prexar.com Unfortunately I've had quite a bit of experience dealing with stuff that was questionably packed and then damaged in shipping. Greg
  3. I used 10 guage solid copper wire with large gold plated spade ends crimped on. These bend in tight and secure under the banana plugs, making it possible to still use the plug in connectors. I even used red wire on the positive terminal and black on the negative terminal. Greg
  4. I have a KLF-C7 for sale, black, good condition, has scratches, but not terrible. One just sold on ebay for $395. Due to condition, I'd sell this one for only $300 plus shipping from Maine. It'll be packed well. email glroberts@prexar.com Greg
  5. Dee, my advice is to keep the 2 channel system as separated as possible from the HT. I liked your idea of switching the speaker wires to the LS. I'd like separate speakers even better. I did real well with a used Onkyo digital 5.1 receiver for about $250. They're even cheaper now. Do get the digital. I have found that I only watch movies a couple of times a month, if that, and we never listen very loud. I can't believe these guys that have a Heritage setup for their HT, it's just too much. I can't imagine listening to a Heritage system at anything more than 25% of what it's capable of for HT. I find movies irritating at high volumes, theres too much change in the volume from a car chase scene to dialogue, and the overall tone usually leaves a lot to be desired. It's impressive, but doesn't need to be 110db. I use KSB 3.1's all around with a KSW-12 subwoofer and KLF-30 center, completely separate from my 2 channel system. Greg

  7. Yes, "Everything Must Go". Anyone who has been in business for themselves will get a kick out of the lyrics in the song "Going Out Of Business". Enjoy. A few months ago, I began buying MFSL cd's in hopes of finding some really nice sounding music to play. I have now learned that the engineering done on the cd is infinately more important to the quality of the sound than the way it is mastered. I now have quite a few MFSL cd's that have a wonderfully mastered crappy sound. I should have known this, as I spent 14 years of my life behind a sound board. I agree about the Dave Mathews Band cd's being well recorded, but I find them to be a bit harsh sounding at times. Greg
  8. I've been cranking this new cd for the last couple of days and it is very impressive. I actually turned down the 30hz on my McIntosh preamp! Yes, I'm listening with a SET amp and I turned down the bass! Seriously though, a very well engineered recording. "Going Out Of Business" has my idea of the perfect drum kit sound. I'm having a blast with my system right now. This is the best sounding audio system I've ever heard, and it's in my living room! DAC, TUBES, AND KHORNS!! Greg
  9. Keep em Gary, they're going to become even more rare. Besides, you may decide to use them in an entirely different system some day! Time to change your signature. Greg
  10. I had the same kind of experience as minn_male42, in that I went from a 200 wpc McIntosh to a 3 wpc SET tube amp and noticed a big difference in midrange sound quality, smoothness, and detail. I still switch wires around and crank the McIntosh though. Why not keep both sets of speakers and put the SS amp on the Revels, and a tube amp on the horns? One can never have too much of this great gear, can they? Greg
  11. The one on ebay that sold for $266 seemed to be in better shape cosmetically, and they said it worked fine. I haven't tried mine. Somehow I doubt the 4 orange caps? with duct tape around them is original. Greg
  12. I live less than 1 hour from Lewiston. Come on up and visit sometime, we'll crank up the Khorns, Cornwalls, Acoustats, KLF30's, Heresy's, AR-9's, Ar-90's, JBL L19's, La Scalas . . . . I've attached a picture of the Fisher 800, more to come . .
  13. I wanted to bring this thread back to the top and let everyone know that unfortunately, I won't be able to buy these amplifiers right now. Bad timing, slow economy, business is not doing well, and I've been buying too da*n much equipment this year! I hope someone on the forum is in a position to buy these, I think they would get a wonderful pair of amps at a relatively reasonable price. Greg
  14. Does that mean we should all stop selling equipment on the forum? Greg
  15. KLF30's One has 4 or 5 little scratches on the top, 1" to 2" long and just barely into the surface, and the other has a couple of little indents (1/8") and a few tiny (1/4" long) scratches on top. All in all, not very noticeable. I suppose the tops could be refinished, but the scratches are very light. The other sides and grilles are perfect. These are a very beautiful mahogany finish, but it's too bad you don't see much of the wood while you're sitting in front of them listening. I don't have the manual or extra feet, and the bi-amp connectors were missing, so I made some myself. I need to get $1000 for them. Local demo and pickup encouraged! Local demo encouraged! Fischer 800, I've not plugged it in, it's filthy, I don't know much about this unit, one recently sold on ebay for $266, make a reasonable offer. AR-9's??!! In their day, quite a nice speaker. These have new grill cloth and new surrounds. They sound nice. Cabinets have some knicks, some scratches, and one large chip that's behind the grill cloth so it's not noticeable unless the grill is off. These were going to be projects of mine someday to refinish like I did to my AR-90's. If you're serious, I'll take some pictures. Beautiful dark walnut. Speaker connectors need work. A pair just sold for $810 on ebay. The B&K is on ebay: Well, I just went to copy the link to put it here, and it just sold! I'll be . . . . .thinking about more SET. Greg
  16. His name is Bill and his email is billd@midmaine.com I asked, and he would love to receive emails about his amps. I hope someone here with knowledge of tube amp construction contacts him and gets the scoop. If I remember correctly, he said something about a transmitting tube. Greg
  17. Chris, are these the same amps as yours? Greg
  18. I'm using a McIntosh SS preamp with a SET tube amp and I'm enjoying the sound quite a bit. I'd like to try my Dynaco PAS-3 preamp on my system, but I've got to get it serviced first. I'd be giving up the remote control though. Also, my preamp has a built-in 5 band E.Q. that comes in handy. I've found this E.Q. doesn't seem to take away from the sound quality like outboard E.Q.'s that I've tried do. I still have yet to hook up my McIntosh MQ107. I bought that and a spectrum analyzer pink noise generator and microphone about 4 months ago and still haven't found time to play with it. I know I'm going to need a full day and I just can't seem to get to it. Is there a company that makes a new tube preamp with a remote volume control and some tone control? Greg
  19. The Dynaco PAS-3 works, but is a little weak in one channel. I would bet it's a bad Tube. Cosmetically it is dirty, but in excellent condition on the front. The rear sticker that shows what the inputs and outputs are has been replaced with a homemade one that is written neatly in magic marker. I need to get $125 for it. It should be serviced and at least have the filter caps replaced prior to using it. If you're serious about buying it, I'll take some pictures. Greg
  20. I've attached a smaller sized picture of the amps. I'm interested. Can you give me a little history on the amps? What is the wattage output with 300b's vs 2A3's? Asking price? email me glroberts@prexar.com Greg
  21. Sound and Vision is just doing what they have to in order to keep the advertising dollars rolling in. Bose never would publish specs. How do you publish the highest distortion specs in the industry, sharp frequency roll off below 100 hz. and still claim to provide better sound through research? I have a t-shirt that I used to wear 25 years ago that says "I Own Klipsch" on the front, and "Beware of Bose, Distortion Kills" on the back. I got kicked out of my local Bose dealership so many times it was a riot. Greg
  22. There is no ad or description. These are just pictures he has on his "about me" page on ebay. I'll see if I can get some more info. Greg
