  1. If you get a chance to watch “One Night with Blue Note” check out Freddie in Art Blakey’s “Moanin”. Great solo on his own but pay close attention to Freddie’s face, (in the background) during Johnny Griffin’s solo. Griffin makes a pretty funny sound and Freddie’s expression is priceless. Seriously, if you like Freddie and this music you gotta see this DVD! Here's the link again. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6657183&style=movie
  2. Sad news indeed. He was my favorite and I regret that I never saw or heard him play live. I recommend this music DVD to anyone. There's a lot of Freddie in it. Worth every penny and then some! http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6384855&style=movie I was just spinnin' this one about an hour ago. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1230607 Here's some info: http://www.ballerstatus.com/article/news/2009/01/6065/
  3. James - LPs are packaged and ready to go. Thanks!
  4. For all you vinyl and jazz enthusiasts – please see Holiday Jazz LP thread in the garage section.
  5. Seti - I went to Barnes & Noble and picked up a couple CDs. They didn't have the DVD, Gaelic Storm - Live in Chicago, but I can get it at CD Universe, The young lady at Barnes & Noble said it was one of her favorites and that they always come to Milwaukee for Irish Fest. She also said they have had a couple different fiddle players. One got pregnant I guess. I played the CD on the way home and enjoyed it. Thanks for the help!
  6. My only concern is that the fiddle player, (in the pictures of Galeac Storm) appears to be blond and the one we saw was brunete. Of course that's an easy change. The lead singer and drummer look right. At any rate, we only caught the last four numbers so we're looking forward to seeing the whole concert. They featured several dancers on a couple of the numbers and my wife really enjoyed that part of te show. I'll check out a couple of those other bands that you guys suggested as well. Thanks again!
  7. I’m not 100% sure but I think the group is Gaelic Storm and the performance was Gaelic Storm - Live In Chicago. I see there is a DVD of the concert and I hope to check it out tomorrow. If that’s it, thanks for the help. I appreciate it. If it isn’t, I’ll keep looking. JJ – I scanned every day in Oct. I guess it was not on PBS. With U-Verse we have so many channels I don’t know if I’m coming or going sometimes.
  8. Nope! I don't recall a piano but thanks Bill. I listened to a little on the site and found it enjoyable though! This band sang quite a few "drinking" songs! I figure they like their beer!
  9. It was a weekend, about 3 ago) and my wife thinks it was a PBS station. I've looked through pictures of a lot of groups but nothing looks familiar.
  10. No, I'm afraid I don't recognize any of them.
  11. I think the drummer had several drums like that and they did have pipes. Not much with bag pipes, (just a few selections) but they had a large and long pipe that was used often. The female fiddle player was dark haired, attractive and really good!
  12. I don't think that's it Amy. This group had at least a couple guitars, base and drums, (the drummer played mostly with his hands on drums similar to bongos) the female fiddle player and few other "different" instruments.
  13. I saw a band on TV last week and never got the name. Maybe Celtic maybe not. They had several guitars, a woman fiddle player and the drummer played mostly with his hands. I think the performance I saw was in Chicago. Anybody know of this group? Tks.
  14. Trey - Do you get a HD picture with the component vidio set up?
  15. We just had U-Verse installed and although learning the channels is a PITA the picture and sound quality are exceptional. The only problem we have is that the tech wasn’t sure how to hook the U-Verse box up so that the HD signal would get to the projector. I think he ran an HDMI cable into the receiver (Yamaha V-2600) from the U-Verse box. The Panasonic projector is linked to the receiver via component video cable. The light indicating HD reception will not light up and of course there is no HD reception. Anybody have an idea what might be wrong with the hook-up?
  16. Best wishes for you and your family Fini. My thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow and Thursday.
  17. Rammstein was awesome! When I got home I gave my wife a taste by watching a U-Tube performance. She is now convinced I’ve lost my mind! Thanks to Damon for an entertaining evening. Good friends, good food, an abundance of audio/video knowledge and excellent music reproduction. It was also great to see young Al! CDs and specific tracks I used to demo the P-39s: Kenny Burrell, “Stolen Moments”, Tin Tin Dio John Patitucci, “Line by Line”, The Root Lee Ritenour, “Overtime”, Boss City David Grisman, “Dawg’s Groove”, Limestones Pepe Romero, “Concierto De Aranjuez” Palladium P-39 Speakers – Huge speakers, physically very attractive, sporting excellent workmanship and fantastic sound. I brought my Rega Apollo CD Player figuring this would be a reasonably good way to compare the P-39s to other Klipsch Speakers I’ve mated it to. Although it is difficult to compare without the benefit of having all speakers in the same room at the same time there was no question the P-39s are something special. As Larry stated: Very accurate with all tone qualities. I somewhat disagree with Larry that they lacked dramatic bass punch but quite frankly I don’t know if the sub was hooked up or not. Occasionally I beat on a set of drums. I’m not a drummer but I appreciate those who are and what they do. I have never heard the sound of drum sticks on the closed hi-hat sound so real and I’d bet Zildjan cymbals were used for the recording, (David Grisman, “Dawgs Groove”). The snare was absolutely crisp and as “live” as I’ve ever heard one through speakers. All percussion, including the cymbals sounded great with realistic resonance. Next I wanted to listen to “Concierto De Aranjuez because I’ve heard the recording on my Cornwalls, Forte IIs, a pair of B&W 801Ds and Klipschorns. This is a difficult because all but the P-39s were powered by tube amps and pre-amps, (my BAT gear and even higher end BAT gear with the 801Ds). For under $500 the Forte IIs hold their own, especially with the Cornwalls but overall I prefer Klipschorns to all including the P-39s. It’s not that the P-39s were lacking. They were accurate, detailed and not overly bight. A better assessment will be made when and if I can get my BAT gear over to Damon’s. The 801Ds were also spectacular and combined with BAT amps and a Rega Apollo CD player only the Klipschorns seemed more enjoyable. My jazz selection, Kenny Burrell’s Stolen Moments, “Tin Tin Dio” sounded excellent but I like it as well with my Cornwalls. I can’t put my finger on it but I may prefer the Cornwall bass, at least on this CD. Again, the snare was crisp and accurate through the P-39s. On John Patitucci’s, Line by Line, “The Root” and Lee Ritenour’s, Overtime, “Boss City” the P-39s really stood out. The bass lines in both were reproduced exceptionally well and I was amazed at the exactness of sound throughout the recording. Soundstage: Similar to Cornwalls and 801Ds. Imaging: As good as I’ve ever heard. We listened to Sarah Mclaughlin and Steely Dan for vocals and again the P-39s performed exceptionally well. I suspect tube gear might improve an already quality reproduction of voice. I don’t believe Klipschorns or B&W 801Ds are better than Damon’s P-39s. Each is different and each is a spectacular product. Please note that I’m an antique buff and that alone may influence my opinion when it comes to audio gear. I must say that the absolute best system I’ve ever heard is Garymd’s. (76 Klipschorns, NosValves VRDs, Blueberry Xtreme, Basis Turntable with Vector Tone Arm and Transfiguration Temper Cart). Maybe it’s the room![] Anyway, with $20K in hand I would buy a pair of Klipschorns, re-veneer them in curly maple, buy a Basis Turn Table, (with the G-man and Larry’s Arm and Cart recommendations) and maybe up grade my BAT Amps. I’d keep the Rega Apollo in the system and I’d probably have a good bit of change. Does that mean I think Damon spent too much money for the P-39s? Absolutely not! His audio ears are better than mine and we have different tastes. It’s unlikely I would ever turn down an invitation to go listen to music, watch a movie or play games at Damon’s place and I can’t wait to try my BAT gear out with his new speakers. Besides, the kid makes the best brats I’ve ever had!
  18. Suffice to say I had a great time at Damon’s and I was very impressed with the P-39Fs. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide more on the visit by sometime this evening.
  19. I just saw this thread and am very happy to hear Amy is doing well. One of the young ladies on my tennis team had similar surgery a few months ago and she’s already getting ready for the season. Thank God for the medical professionals that perform these miracles.
  20. If I had a rack of blue metered Macs I’d have to think hard about that deal. Wait a minute! I do have a rack of blue metered Macs.[]
  21. I really enjoyed William F Buckley; his books, shows, debates and forums. The thing I loved best about Mr. Buckley was that he was smarter than all the people I figured were smarter than me! I just heard Mara Liasson say that conservatives could use about 10 more WFBs about now. Ain’t that the truth!
  22. I would really enjoy attending the Auduikarma event but May is not a good month for me to get away. We’re right in the middle of the tennis season and I have matches scheduled every Saturday in the month. John – that southern route isn’t bad. If I can’t time the pass through Chicago and I’m going southeast, I take it.
  23. The cold may have bothered the old QB. It sure looked like he had time to pass and I kept wondering what was up with the receivers. It’s surprising that the commentators didn’t pick up on that and at least show us what was going on down field. When the kids got home, (at 2AM & frozen) I asked about the receivers and they said guys were open. Now my kid is a tennis player and not a student of football but his two buddies played at the college level and both came away thinking it was time for Favre to retire. They thought he missed way too many opportunities. I guess the atmosphere was pretty sullen on the way out of the stadium. The kids said it was like a funeral procession; but with the loss and the cold I guess that’s what you’d expect!
  24. The younger QB was the star today. Favre never should have thrown the two balls that were intercepted but then that’s always been his downfall. Ya gotta take the good with the bad and today he was no match for Ely! I do have to agree with oldtimer. This was a terribly slow moving game. I’m sure glad I wasn’t sitting in the stands for all the down time and that dragging is one reason I normally skip games not involving the Packers. Thank God for the remote and the Australian Open during this one. Congratulations to the Giants. They finished the season great!
  25. A couple things about that Chicago game: It didn’t mean much for the Packers and then there is the old stand by…………If you have a lousy season but manage to beat the Packers; there is fulfillment. It works both ways, of course! Also, it was an extremely windy down in Chicago that day. The game today won’t be a cake walk for the Packers but I think the better team wins at home, 27 to 17. The kids just left Oshkosh to go up early and tailgate. I guess one of their friends has a good size ice fishing tent, (with heat) so the party will start early in Green Bay! It must be a sign I’m getting old because, although I’m excited for them to go, I’m not all that envious. Well, maybe just a little! Go Pack!
