I have the following tube books on my bookshelf. Tube Curcuits for Audio Amplifiers -Mullard The Vacuum Tube Logic Book -David Manley Tube Substitution Handbook -Wm Smith & Barry Buchanan RCA Receiving Tube Manual -RCA

For all practical purposes the KG5.5 and the KM-6 are the same speaker. Why the different model line designation?

Time to bump this thread up into the New Year.

Radio Shack, You got questions, we got blank stares. The only thing they seem to be able to do now is sell cellular phones. When I do go in to find a part for something I am working on I usually end up leaving empty handed because they no longer carry the part or by the odd chance they still do the wait to check out is 15-20 minutes because they are too busy with cell phones. Cellular Shack, You want a phone, we have a long wait.

Thanks Mike and Lynn. My motto is "If it isn't Broken don't fix it" Or is it "If it isn't Broken fix it til it is." ? As I said the only thing I plan to do to the speakers is refinish the cabinets, new grills, and maybe replace the batting inside. What is the material Klipsch used in early 1960s speakers? As for the Eico I fixed that real good when I first got it around 1992. My first attempt to re wire it for 6L6 tubes ended with burned wires and 600 volts blazing through yours truly! I have it working again but need to restore it proper. Thanks to this forum and links I can now do it right with the proper 7591 tubes. A little background on this equipment. My grandfather built both the speakers and amp from 1959 to 1963 from the dates penciled inside the pieces. Sadly he passed away in 1971 at 57. Way too young. My grandmother gave away all his stereo and camera and darkroom equipment after his death. Fast forward to 1992. I pay a visit to grandma and she asks me to move grandpa's old stereo cabinet to the other side of the room. I lift one end and it is pretty light. I go to move the other end, HEAVY! I ask her what is in it. She replies it is his old amp. Having been totally infected with the audiophile bug while in the army a few years before I knew this meant TUBES! Sure enough, Eico ST-70. I told her that I thought she had given away all his stuff when he passed away. She replied that she had, except his amp and speakers. Speakers? Where? Down in the basement wrapped in plastic trash bags since 1971. I got my inheritance home that night and hooked it up to my Rotel 855 CD player. (Sorry no turntable). I never hooked up the Carver/Polk stuff I had again. I have gone through several pieces of equipment since then but still come back to the "family gear".

Here are a couple of pics of speakers my grandfather built around 1959-1962. Jensen horn tweeter and midrange. Lafayette woofer and crossover. About the only thing I can think of doing is refinishing the wood outside and new grills. Maybe replace the batting inside? They sound excellent as is right now hooked to his old Eico ST-70.

The SB-1 uses the K-109-A 1" (2.54cm) Polymer dome compression driver for its tweeter. The SB-2 uses the K-101-S 1" (2.54cm) Aluminum dome compression driver. I dont know how much space you have but try to swing the SF-2 speakers at least.

Have you thought about some Klipsch KSB 1.1s on their sides? DIMENSIONS (H x W x D): 11.125" (28.3cm) x 6.875" (17.5cm) x 6.375" (16.2cm) All over eBay at around $75/pair buy it now. Oh and they have front ports.

You have 2 sets of main speaker terminals on the back of the DR-C500. A & B. So you should be able to control both sets of speakers. Now all we have to do is replace those Bo$e 'speakers'. __________________________________ I reserve the right to bash Bose as I am a victim...I mean former owner.

Thanks for the link Tom! I have an Eico ST-70 that was my grandfathers from the late 50s/early 60s. I have been wanting to restore it, but i would also like to rebuild the output tube stage so i can use a more common type of tube than the 7591. Has anyone done this?

Thanks Shapeshifter. I am pursuing some R3 original speakers and wanted to make sure there was no major difference.

What is the difference between the original R3 series speakers and the newer R3II series? So far the only thing I can find is the newer R3II series are wired with Monster Z cable.

The Onkyo model number you listed is actually an HK model. I think most people here will tell you to get the HK AV 520 though. As for the 4 ohm speakers with it, a 520 owner will have to answer that.
