  1. Chuck, I have been through the exact same thing a number of times. When I first exchanged my Cornwall crossovers for Dean's mega-expensive Super B's, I was disappointed. I had the EXACT first impression you had. I decided to listen for 2 weeks then swap back to my originals. I'm not sure if it was break-in or just my ears adjusting, but when I swapped back in the originals 2 weeks later, I couldn't imagine ever listening with those horrible, bright and distorted original crossovers. I would give them some time, then put back the originals and see what you think before spending any more money. I was never a big fan of changing the Klipsch sound so I kept my original drivers. Please keep us posted. Gary
  2. I have 2 SACD players and don't use either for multi-channel playback. Like Dave said, the number of layers in meaningless. I play my SACDs in stereo and they sound terrific, some better than others of course. I used to play multi-channel but it meant using my HT receiver instead of my old tube amp. No comparison. 2-channel (SACD mode or not) on a good 60 year old tube amp blew away multi-channel on a modern HT receiver.
  3. Josh is the winner of the Decorator Description Discussion! Very confusing and I certainly understand why Noah thought he was correct after reading Andy's old post. Josh, you rock dude!! You have an excellent memory. Great info posted by Andy many moons ago. It seems all CBRs of a certain vintage were really decorator models.
  4. All the RCAs (left and right/top and bottom) in my old Scott amps touch because they just didn't space them very far apart in the old days. The only problem I encounter is when this causes the inside of the jacks to touch (inside the unit - not sure what the technical term for that part of the jack is) and then it's a matter of one or both channels cutting out. Nothing ever blows up if that's your worry. As long as there's no movement inside the unit, I don't think you should have a problem. The shielding should be more than adequate on the cable ends. That's my experience anyway. You might want to wait for someone who actually knows what they're talking about.
  5. Nah. I had my Basis set up by the guy I bought it from. My TD124 was set up by me and Thebes. Both could probably use a little tweaking at this point.
  6. Yeah. They'll send you as many replacements as it takes but they aren't always nice about it, particularly a guy named Cody who is responsible for returns. Elusive Disc is better to deal with. They actually appreciate your business. AS owns Analogue Productions which are usually excellent pressings so sometimes you just have to bite the bullet or pass on a good title.
  7. Ditto! Sorry to hear about all the problems, but thanks for posting them. Dennie Don't overreact because of one bad experience. I have about 12 or more Clarity Vinyl box sets and I've yet to be disappointed. They are some of the best sounding albums I own. My copy of "SO" is dead quiet and sounds amazing. It sounds like Art just got a bad run. I've also had run-ins with the folks at AS and they always seem to cop an attitude and come back with comments like, "Oh, I better write down in your file that you want perfect covers." Damm right I do when I'm spending $50 for an album! With just one or two exceptions, the Clarity Vinyl LPs have been extremely quiet in my experience. I had one record in a 4 record set that I sent back. The one I got in return was even worse than the first so it seems when they have a bad batch, they're all bad. I bought mine when they were first offered at AS for $50. Now, some are selling for as much as $200. I don't regret buying any of them.
  8. I stand corrected. I highly recommend the first. Beyond that, I'm through recommending anything for a while!
  9. Gregg - I think the separates are only 33 1/3 so I have no idea.
  10. OK. I guess I should have listened to all the LPs before posting my thoughts. I spent this morning listening to ALL the tracks. There were 3 LPs I had yet to hear when I initially posted. All 3 of those have what Steve Hoffman calls very narrow stereo, which actually sounds more like mono. The midrange is WAY forward on those LPs. Horrible. (sorry rigma) The first 2 LPs I played when I got the set were the bonus LP and the self-titled LP with Suzie Q and I Put A Spell On You. I listened at fairly high volume (for me anyway) and was blown away. I thought they sounded amazing, still do. My wife then came down to work on the computer and I listened to the next few LPs at low volume. Still, I thought they sounded really good. I have the midrange dialed way back on Dean's ALK Jrs. I was saving a few songs for a time I could crank it up a bit. I wanted to hear Heard It Through The Grapevine loud so that was one I didn't play until today. Well, that was an eye-opener! The drums are so in-your-face forward, they just dominate the track. I don't think I could listen to that other than extremely low volume. Same with the other 2 LPs I'd yet to hear. It was the last 3 LPs in the set that were the worst IMO.....Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum and Mardi Gras. For those of you who have yet to receive their sets, play the bonus LP and the self-titled LP first. Post your thoughts. Then play the last 3 LPs. I apologize for jumping the gun. I've never heard a bigger difference between LPs in a box set before, especially a set done by Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray and Chad Kassem!
  11. At least you never used too!!! Dennie No Dennie, I still feel these are special. It's Rigma who doesn't. Let's wait for the others to get their sets before a final determination is made. I'm heading downstairs right now to listen again. BTW - I thought Mothership was absolutely unlistenable on my system but many others liked it. Go figure.....
  12. Wow. Even the wide stereo mix LP? I don't listen at loud volumes. I'll try these a little louder and see if that makes a difference. I thought the separation of instruments was pretty amazing. I have one on SACD and thought this was much better. Sorry to give bad recommendations, especially with such an expensive set.[] Now I'm very curious to hear what other Khorn owner's think. I never post LP recs unless I feel it's something special.
  13. I have the box set (traded with Fini) and it's awesome! Not only do the LPs sound great but the inserts are very nice too. It's a really nice set and you won't be disappointed. The only way you could do better is if they released it on 45rpm. I doubt that will happen any time soon since this set was just released. Go for it!!
  14. There is one LP in the set that is labeled "wide stereo mix." That one is by far the best of the bunch although they're all fantastic. I can't wait until the weekend when I have time to do more listening. There's still one LP I haven't played. It's always fun to experience one of those audio moments when you say to yourself, "so this is what that song is supposed to sound like." Mike - You're going to love this set!! Please post once you have a chance to listen. BTW - It's an 8 LP set. I believe the wide stereo mix LP is a bonus. Yeah it's a bit pricey which is why the full box set sold out so quickly. For $50 more you could get the complete albums.
  15. If money was no object, I could see myself playing nothing but 45 rpm LPs in 5 years. As it is, I'm guessing my belt is set to 45 more often than not these days. I'm not even a big CCR fan but after reading the reviews on the new box set, I treated myself to the "Absolute Originals" which is sort of a greatest hits version of the complete box set. http://store.acousticsounds.com/d/14666/Creedence_Clearwater_Revival-The_CCR_Box_Set_-_Absolute_Originals-Vinyl_Box_Sets They claim this one sounds better because they had more groove space to work with. OMG! These LPs are unfrigginbelievable!! These are songs everyone has heard a hundred plus times over the years but you would swear you were listening for the first time. We have all said this when swapping speakers or preamps but this one is special. If you're a CCR fanatic or just like a few of their songs OR you want a really nice box set to show off your system, this is the one!
  16. I've been in touch recently. He's alright. Just a lot going on in his life right now. I'll let him know he's missed.
  17. My brother gave me a loaded hard drive about 4 months ago from the website. I still haven't brought it in from the car. I suppose I still have about 500 or more tapes in the basement. I also lost interest in obtaining live shows many years ago (with the exception of Dick's Picks) after spending so many years collecting, trading, etc. I spent the 70s, 80s and much of the 90s listening to not much else. Now I go on occasional Dead binges but also sometimes go months without listening to any. And no, it has nothing to do with drugs.
  18. Wow. Google that turntable and you get a 4 year old thread from a speaker forum. They must be selling like hotcakes.[]
  19. If I had to explain, you wouldn't understand. Jerry Garcia once said on a rare Tonight Show?? appearance in 1981 (I remember watching like it was yesterday), “Our audience is like people who like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.”
  20. I'll sleep with one eye open tonight.[] Not sure the buckster was much of a Grateful Dead fan so that probably makes us even.
  21. Thanks for all the support regarding the Rolling Stones! You people got class!! Forgot to mention Springsteen. I like the song Born To Run but that's about it. Fini - Point taken. NRBQ is the exception to the rule during the 80s.[]
  22. Anything from the 80s. Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx and a few others. I'm convinced they're all the same band. They just produced albums under different names to make more money. AC/DC. Never understood what all the hoopla was about. Same with KISS. Rolling Stones - most overrated band in history. Glad to get that off my chest.
  23. $3 is way too much to pay for a yard sale CD, particularly Chicago 19![]
  24. I found one of the Harry James Sheffield Labs LPs at the thrift store for a buck. Outstanding for a buck.[] Not quite as good as many of my MFSLs (also half-speed) or newer reissues but I'm guessing it's way better than the original. I do listen to it once a year or so when I'm in a big band kind of mood!
  25. Or you can buy a step-up transformer to boost the output. I use a Denon 103R (Zu Modified) with a 299 and a step-up. It sounds terrific but it is an added cost. Buy it once and you'll never have to worry about it again. You can get something pretty darn good for a couple hundred bucks or so.
