  1. Personally, I think the 103 (or some variation) would do a nice job with your 240 and 110 (I used that exact Mac combo for a while). The Macs provide a very lush sound and I think the detail from the 103 would compliment them nicely. I would start with the 103 (without the Zu Mods) or 103R. And yes, that is a nice starter system.[Y]
  2. Well Art, they must have 2 cutting machines because mine is outstanding. There is a little noise but no more than an average 200 gram LP and it totally disappears when the music is playing. Also, it seems about average on the volume knob so no S/N issues on my system. Very odd. I did notice a little too much sssss on the vocals but nothing outrageous. I'm not a huge Gabriel fan and I only bought the LP because it's on Clarity. I still have an original pressing from the 80s so maybe I'll throw it on to see how it compares. Sorry you got a lemon. If you don't trust a trade-in, see if they'll swap it for this one: http://store.acousticsounds.com/d/61182/Lorna_Hunt-All_In_One_Day-45_RPM_Vinyl_LP I guarantee you will enjoy Lorna!
  3. That's hysterical. I'm going to give mine a spin. I'll be back shortly.
  4. I initially had my 124 set up in a mono only system using a Ortofon Mono SPU and it was a fantastic match. The 124 and the SPUs were made for each other and they have built-in step up transformers in the headshell. I only swapped it for the 103R because I couldn't live without my stereo LPs once I moved the table to my beach house. I can tell you first hand that Charles gave you excellent suggestions!
  5. Here's another review: So posted on 01/26/2010 5 Stars I am a man of few words... So here goes OUTSTANDING In every way!!!!!! Maybe this guy is using his old Fisher Price record player.
  6. I think I knew that Art.[] You should here Norah Jones on Clarity! BTW - Here's a review from Acoustic Sounds site: I say No to this issue of So posted on 02/17/2010 1 Stars Reviewer: Mike N. I was expecting a really clean sounding record, but all four discs have very annoying ticks throughout. Many of my standard issue records don't even have this problem. As far as the mastering, it seems like the highs and lows have both been boosted, often resulting in muddy bass and distorted treble. The latter makes for some very bad sibilance on many of the songs. Often so bad, that it makes me wince...like fingers on a chalkboard! In my opinion, this is bad mastering, and a bad pressing. The packaging is good... nice gatefold jacket and nice box. The sleeves are high quality, but unfortunately they're just a tad too small, so getting the record back in the sleeve is a challenge. The music is great, this being my favorite Peter Gabriel album, but the quality of this issue is unacceptable at this price.
  7. I have a ZU 103R on my 124/SME 3009 and it sounds wonderful. You can try the 103 without the ZU mods first to see if it suits you. They're very inexpensive. FYI: The 103 is a low output moving coil and you will need a step-up assuming you don't already have one. I used to own an MX110 but can't remember if it had that option. Probably not considering the age of the unit.
  8. Wow. I just got mine too but haven't listened yet. Now I'll have to give it a spin. I assume you're going to send it back? I have about 10 Clarity LPs now and they're almost all exceptional. Just look how the prices have gone up! Sometimes the QC at Classic isn't great but so far I haven't noticed any problems with the Clarity series. I hope yours is just an aberration.
  9. Now that was much funnier than my lame attempt at humor![]
  10. I beg to differ. The definitive answer is..............maybe.[]
  11. I'm sure there are certain designs that handle vibration better than others but I doubt it has anything to do with MM vs MC. If you have a loose stylus or cantelever, my guess is the cart would be more prone to vibration problems. But hey, what do I know? That's just a guess.
  12. What a shot from the straw at 13!! I thought he would have played it safe with the lead. That was amazing!
  13. LOL. So did I when I was younger. At 50, I can't risk it anymore. Now I use a nice pair of wire strippers like those shown above! Much easier!! I used to use a razor blade to get it started before finishing with my molars! [:#]
  14. It drives me nuts when people attempt to sound intelligent using "I" when "me" is correct. "John took Mom and I to the store." Take out Mom and listen to the sentence. It's very easy. How about further and farther? Simple rule: Use farther for distance and further for everything else. Keep it simple! Eliminate unnecessary words! My first sentence: It really drives me nuts when people attempt to sound intelligent by using "I" when "me" is the correct word. Fill out a government employment application and you will quickly understand the importance of eliminating unnecessary words!
  15. Discdoc.com Get the brushes and fluid from him. Call him and he'll tell you what you need. Don't let him talk you into buying too much stuff. Just get the concentrate and two brushes, one for cleaner and one for distilled water. Keep them separated. You can also buy cheap replacement pads for both your machine and your brushes. That will save you a ton of money down the road. They are self-stick pads and work as well as the originals.
  16. Keith Emerson told a really long story about being strapped to that piano. They didn't quite have it working right one night and he almost broke both of his legs during the show. It was a 9 foot grand, his legs strapped to the piano going one direction (back flips) while his body was trying to go in the opposite direction. All the time, he had to continue playing these extremely amazing and difficult songs. Turns out he was just badly bruised, adjustments were made and the tour continued. My first ELP show was during the Trilogy tour in the mid-70s. Let's just say it was a mind-altering experience at Cole Field House, the home of the Maryland Terrapins at the time. They played the entire Trilogy album. I remember Carl Palmer doing things that night that did not seem humanly possible!
  17. He's smiling at the crowd, been signing autographs all week, very un-Tiger-like. He looks pretty good so far but I don't think he'll finish in the top 10. Maybe the top 20 but there are too many guys out there in top form. We shall see. Anything's possible. Last I checked he birdied three to go one under. I hope Tom Watson can keep it up for 4 days! At 60, he'll be the oldest to lead a major at the end of the day since WWII if nobody catches him.
  18. You know how we all feel Michael. Klipsch was lucky to have you.........Well, that's the understatement of the year. They should have been doing jumping jacks every day you showed up! Don't do their job for them but still post. It's nice having you around and your comments are always great, whether or not they are support related. It is definitely noticable when you take a leave of absence. That's coming from a guy who needs no technical support! Maybe a little moral support every once in a while..............[]
  19. BTW - They played, "I Talk To The Wind" from The Court Of The Crimson King. It reminded me of seeing Pink Floyd back in the late 80s when they opened with Astronomy Domine. I was going nuts and the rest of the crowd was dead silent because all they knew was DSOTM and beyond. However, this was a much more sophisticated ELP crowd. They knew King Crimson very well. At intermission (after 3 songs LOL!), the ladies were joking because it was the first time anyone could remember the line to the men's room being longer than the line to the ladies room. The joke was (and probably true) that the average age of those attending was probably mid-50s and the men all had enlarged prostates.[]
  20. The sound was amazing. He had his original touring moog. Lake was coming off a throat infection and sounded a little harsh but much better than I expected. They opened with a story then went into From The Beginning. Sounded fabulous. More stories.......Take A Pebble. Keith talked about strumming the piano strings in the original version but since he had no grand piano on stage, he just played a nice intro. I always thought it sounded like an autoharp. More stories. Meeting Leonard Bernstein. Keith joking about Bernstein always having 2 young men by his side while Greg insisting he had NOTHING to do with that particular story except that Bernstein liked Keith's leather pants. Many laughs. Greg talked about getting his first guitar when he was 12. He also wrote Lucky Man that same year at 12. They were a few minutes short on tracks when recording their 1st album so Greg said he had a short song he wrote when he was 12. Keith said, yeah right, and walked away. He came back and his new moog had just arrived. He was testing its range while they secretly recorded him. Turns out that particular range fit in perfectly at the end of Lucky Man which is how that synthesizer ending came about. Like I said in a prior post, they asked if anyone in the audience had questions. I thought that was incredibly generous of them. Seemed they enjoyed telling stories every bit as much as playing music. For me, it was a once in a lifetime experience. It's not every day two of your favorite musicians are 10 feet away telling stories, playing incredible music and answering your questions. BTW - When Greg hit those deep bass notes, I thought the place was going to fall apart. The entire building was rattling! After he hit the first one, a huge smile lit up his face and he said, "Yeah baby," kind of Austin Powers-like.
  21. I have sugar maple buds all over my back patio at the moment. For the next few weeks I'll be using the blower at least twice a day so it isn't tracked through the house. Then come the helicopters! On windy days in April, it sometimes looks like it's snowing. I used to think we had a mole problem in our yard but I'm now convinced it's a few million maple seedlings trying to take root. We have taken down 6 very large maple trees in our yard for various reasons. You don't want them anywhere near your foundation or driveway/sidewalks because of their shallow/surface root systems. On the plus side, they grow very quickly (except Japanese maples) and make great shade/climbing trees.
  22. Amazing time last night with two thirds of my favorite three-man band. My brother-in-law took me to the show as a birthday gift. Ram's Head Live in Annapolis is a very intimate setting and we were about 10 feet from Keith Emerson. They spent almost as much time telling stories as they did playing. They even took questions from the audience. One guy asked if they had ever played "Benny And The Bouncer" live. They honestly couldn't remember and after a couple tries, they finally sync'd up, found the right key and gave it their best shot. Greg Lake couldn't remember half of the words but he hummed and laughed his was through those lyrics. It was just so amazing for those like me who know every note from every song they have ever released. They even threw in a couple early King Crimson songs. A good time was had by all! Apparently Carl Palmer is touring with Asia but they insist they will all be together soon for a reunion of some sort.
  23. Looks like a red maple but I'm just an ameteur. All maples leave a mess in the Spring. If it is a maple, those seedlings will turn into little helicopters and spin with the wind, straight into your gutters. []
  24. And this is my green screen just taken (lelands):
