  1. Buy her a new house. Tell her you love her. Find a deal that is so ridiculous that she tells you to drive 16 hours to pick up a set of Khorns. Buy schedule insurance, have the basement flood and trash a set of La Scalas, and hand her the entire settlement check. She won't say a thing. The speakers will be banned to the basement, also
  2. That's it, Fini! You don't know your adz from a mole in the ground! That's cappacino frosting with a cream cheese/marzipan base, and walnut sprinkles. You've been nipping too much Napa down in the cellar, and I'm CALLING YOU OUT. Happy holidays
  3. Jim, like a vestal virgin, it is still intact. The plastic wrap has not been removed. The only ritual we do is to remove the tin top, weigh it, and send it on its merry way. Fini, in keeping with the family tradition, last night I convinced my lovely wife that we should gift it to my oldest nephew's fiancee as one of her wedding shower presents two days after Christmas. My nephew has really found a prize - she is gorgeous, intelligent, resourceful, and has a great wit. It comes with growing up on a farm near Mason City, Iowa. Wonder what she will use the ten pound circular brick for in their house for the next year My audio engineer bud is upset, however. He ran some algorithms and insisted the fruitcake would be better at isolating your feedback/hum situation than the balls on a platter you are trying! Sheesh, engineers!
  4. This forum is an advertisement and a solicitation for business, if you did not notice. It is funded by money we spend on new and replacement Klipsch gear. Whether people who are on the board shilling their services or advice, as long as it is good or a good value, more power to them. It helps Klipsch. People are taking a little too much on themselves slinging this much guana around the sandbox. It is splattering all over many of us who might initially have been entertained and amused. As the Noted Greek philosopher Deflato Finial once said, "This much wasted mental flagellation can only lead to massive trade imbalances with China and a huge influx of cheap knock off preamps. The ultimate ascendency of Atwater Kent breadboard receivers shall give rise to a more efficient form of horn speaker than the cave; And all will be happy, save for those Freudian interlopers who shall always argue about the importance of size." I say, nonbelievers, look at the flames. Tapedecks - none. Turntables - none. Speakers - none. Preamps - none. Eight tracks - none. CD players - a few. Amps - aw sheet... Really, y'all got your woodpecker stuck in the zipper.
  5. I am the lucky holder of a treasured family heirloom - one of those harder than a brick fruitcakes made by some indentured Benedictine monks living in some cave down in Kentucky. It was a gift to our Dad from a grateful patient, Dad sent it to me, I gave it to my sister for the following Christmas, and soon it was making annual sojourns cross country and around the world. It has been gifted to over thirty different people! Last year my aunt sent it to China, where my cousin received it two weeks and three days later. Then she brought it carefully home and returned it to me. It has been donated to charities, taken to numerous Skrew your neighbor parties, raffled off, moved to eleven new houses, and we still can't get rid of it. Who is a brave soul on this site? Speak now or forever be dreaming of a luscious bourbon soaked fruitcake lovingly baked by holy monks working for the greater glory of God...
  6. Craig, I'd tell you to sit on some tubes, but you can't tell who's going up or down the chimney for the next week or so.
  7. "Strong liberal politics" has little in common with my world, CWM. I am in engineering, safety, and on the nuclear side of things. Performance is number one, two, three, and four. It is not uncommon to dismiss a contrary position as one held by a person of a certain political ideology. I have donated more money to conservative officeholders than you have voted for, unless you recently moved to Canada from Chicago, where your Republican ballot wasn't counted anyway Please don't confuse me with a bleeding heart liberal that you so despise. I have yet to see your reply to the "Boys behaving badly" rejoinder, but don't worry too much. It's really hard to argue about felony statistics committed by and/or against memebrs of a country's military members. Most conservatives don't want to admit that "aggressive" male behaviour is not "prudent" behaviour, whether it be practiced in a civilian or wartime milieu. It is probably best to admit that we grew up in different generations- you grew up following a male hierarchy and I cut my teeth leading a mixed cultural and mixed sex division. Different times, different paradigms, different leaders. I won't talk too myself any more - enjoy the hockey season up yonder!
  8. Gary, I've been cranking on the new house/old house switcheroo and have only had time to stick them in my tube cabinet shrine. I'm sending my original 299c to Craig tomorrow, and then I have a LK72 and Dee's 299c for him to check out also. I got the back yard mowed today with the temps in the 60s this afternoon. Tomorrow I need to buy a saw and air hammer so I can get 180 linear feet of oak baseboard installed upstairs. My wife's uncle might be loaning me his mitre saw, but only if I let him listen to the Khorns while I do all the work I'll be attending next month's antique radio club meeting in St. Louis - a couple guys have already mentioned they are interested in any Atwater tubes$$$$$. Right now I'm listening to the MX110 dialed in to KMOX. It's a blast, listening to the original 50,000 watt clear channel am station west of the Mississippi, on vintage equipment born within a couple years of my natal
  9. 36 inches is about as large as I want to go. Anything larger will be a significant safety hazard for my sister-in-law who has CP. This TV will be upstairs in the living room and should not eat up tremendous space. I think I am looking for the misnamed "HDTV ready," the tv that needs the HDTV receiver. Are the HDTVs also 16x9 capable, or is that the next price break up? I feel like a brontosaurus in a den of T rexes when I head for the superstores in St. Louis. It is a combat zone in these zoos!
  10. Thanks Allan, I couldn't remember which Mac had the 7591s vs 6L6s. Craig's bud in Chicago has the 7591a quad for about $80, and GaryMD has a real good source for vintage as well. Not a dime a dozen, but not exorbinant either. It looks like a no brainer, Josh!
  11. Josh, my wife has to pick up her two cases of free suds once a month from where the horses lift their tails What do you do? We live just off 55S and Lindbergh, e-mail me and we can hook up at Vintage or pound suds at the house. If they just replaced the tubes, ask that they retain the old ones. The vintage Mac output tubes generally were not rode hard and hung to dry wet, so the seller may be trying to make more $$$. A quad of Mac labeled outputs can range from $120 to 250, depending on how they test and how stupid a deep pocketed collector is. Shot tubes make great lights for stockings, too!
  12. Hey guys, I'm new to HT - looking for a HDTV for under $1500 if possible. I'm trying to get up to speed, so thought I would ask a few questions here. I want to run audio outs through my HK 630 to some Heresys, bypassing all the nasty TV speakers. What would be some possible brands and models to consider, and is there a good pack of connections that is the bare minimum to allow for future expansion? I hit Ultimate today and got steered to the 4K sets and promptly left. They are more interested in selling than answering questions
  13. Josh, In St. Louis circles, the MC225 is the most highly prized, even more exalted than the MC 30s. Some think the higher powered Macs get away from the preferred Mac sound. I feel that most Macs are a little chesty, but at $1,000, you are flying about $4-500 below the market for a great shape MC225. The only caveats I would add is 1)check that the tubes are good and 2)make sure it is not a MacKit; though I haven't heard of one, there are new things with vintage Macs I see every month! A good example is the Mac MC40, which has one on Ebay now. Good luck on closing what sounds like a great deal.
  14. Guy, You probably had a sweet high-revving Mini Cooper that could kick the snot out of everything that crossed its path on any serious winding road. They are great little beasts, and when you drop a Stage 2 or 3 engine in along with poly bushings and handling kit, watch out! It's a shame you didn't send it to the Midwest for sale - you could have pulled down another 60% if you maintained it like I think you would I almost pulled the trigger on a $950 Scott 299C when I first started chasing integrated tube amps. Thankfully, I listened to a couple people, showed some patience, and ended up with a totally restored one and a working horse for a couple hundred less than what VTV wanted for a single cheap rebuilt. Craig does dang good electrical work, and his soldering (coming from a Nuc Inspector) would pass reactor QA. He, Ryan, Erik, Mike, and all the guys who do the sparky work deserve a lot of respect for their efforts. There are a number of people here who are from a blue collar or less than upper class economic background. We enjoy reading about systems that we will never even dream about listening to, let alone owning. Believe it or not, we LOOK UP and ADMIRE people on the forum who help us by rebuilding, birddogging, or kit building tube equipment that we can dream about, and yes, even buy if we are real good. You are one of those who conciensciously birddog, and many thanks for that! It is a real bummer when we come to the Klipsch forum and see flames popping out all over the place like pimples on a seventeen year old Like many, I would love to have a long listen to a wonderful SET amp for a month or so. Unfortunately, I've decided this won't happen for the next ten years or so, as I need a healthy set of 60 watt monoblocs to drown out the one year old Let's try to keep our learned discourse civil
  15. Greg, "Nobody to share the joy with me!" White and Strunk love parsimony, in spoken and written word. Music has been created and played for thousands of years, crossing the abyss and singing to our souls. Happy natal anniversary, and blessings... Alliteration was one of my favorite high school English teacher's pet writing tips, so I became well grounded in its use. Much to my surprise, a verbal phrase led to me being selected as a DJ at the college radio station when I rattled off our dorm floor Khorn stereo setup the immortal 5G anthem - "Look up here, you slinky, slimely, slithering, sleezy ****" perfectly annunciated. It didn't get me a date that weekend, but I fell for Klipsch speakers
  16. A real man must put his best friend in that situation. A real officer must sacrifice enlisted men if his survival provides his men with a better chance of mission success. Our current armed forces would come crashing to a halt without the valued contributions of women. So would Klipsch, and a multitude of other MNCs. It is rich irony that seven years ago, when I interviewed the commandant at the US Military Academy, he spoke for over two hours about the numerous contributions female officers have and continue to offer at West Point. Again, it appears that the US would only be at 75% combat readiness if women were not actively serving at every level of command structure in our military. The second best sharpshooter in my bro's battalian had three shoots - three kills last week in Samarrah. Any guesses as to the length of this person's hair? No crewcut or high-n-tight here There aren't many concerns about being politically correct here. We have no jobs or careers that will be influenced by this forum as long as we don't exceed Klipsch's leniant bounds. The military has it somewhat easier than civyland - guys are on the loose 16 hours a day and all weekend on this side of the fence. Boys behaving bad was the norm in the military...STDs outnumber ladies by 3 to 1 per capita...bankruptcies 7 to 1...armed criminal actions 7 to 2...DWIs 11 to 1...murder, don't even ask!...AWOL 5 to 1, all in a recent year end status report I obtained at Page avenue on an operational army base in Texas. Hey, if single young mothers go in the military so they can get day care, that is a perceptive decision on their part. It is a lot more difficult to keep up statistically with the loser we had on my boat who had five kids by four different moms in one year, went to seven CMs, and never saw a paycheck. Be careful of what you advocate without recourse.
  17. Smilin, if you could, post the tagline for that ebay auction of treadwell's so we can watch for future items from them, if you catch my drift Have you figured out how you will be getting the Verts to Chitown from KC? CONGRATULATIONS!!!
  18. Georg, don't get the cart before the horse! Although I didn't look where you live, find a forum member in your neck of the woods, invite yourself over, and have a listen. Define clearly what your objective is, and stick to it. Listen and learn what your chosen system can and cannot handle, and then go down the alley you want as time and money allow. Do not go for the most wonderful or technically advanced component from the get-go. There are many ways to get a wonderful system, and you are tilting toward the less rewarding by pursuing components rather than speaker upgrades. If you have a set of midrange speakers, then go after a midrange tube setup. Getting a kick-*** low powered tube amp will not greatly benefit your RF3s, in my mind. The decision is yours, but many of us on the forum have benefitted from buying vintage at a reasonable cost, having it restored with warranty from Craig or Ryan, and and going from there. If you tie up 2 grand in a Rotel/Wright setup, your options are fairly limited. I really think you would be better served by spending lots of money on your second tube amp, rather than your first. At least 75% of the forum members with tube equipment have gone through at least two, if not more, amps in the past five years, I'd wager!
  19. Georg, yhere are more tube options than you can shake a fist at, and there are many variations. Off the top of my head, you can get single-ended triode(SET), single-ended, mono, parallel mono, dual mono, push-pull, and too-much-money in your pockets tube You have people who swear by their output tubes - 2a3, 300b, military, 6bq5, 7591, el 34, el84, kt 88, kt66 etc, etc, etc. If you are like I was when I ventured into the realm of tube amplification, I wanted good, reliable sound with about 25-35 wpc, and for under $5-600 dollars, with flexibility for inputs. I did some reading on other websites, and people were quite enthusuastic about eico HF81s, Dynaco, Fischer and Pilot gear, and Scotts at this price break. They also love the "old" iron as compared to modern tube stuff. The HF81 fell out just because of the power output - 14 wpc is not want I love when listening to rock or heavy jazz. The sought after fischers are mainly monoblocks and look old, plus a fisher afficianado in St. Louis said they are tempermental, even after being rebuilt. The Pilots are great, a little bit rarer, and are up and coming as far as monetary value. The Scotts and Dynaco seem to be the workhorses of the bunch, and there are many more rebuilders that work on these two then all the others combined. If you want superior reliability and convenience in a single package, the Scott 299c or 299d, when massaged by Craig or Ryan, will be a great performer that will give you quality and you will not lose money if you ever sell it. If you want to run it with a preamp, the Dynaco ST70 gives you similar power as an amp only setup. I have both, run them every day, and love them. Sooner or later, you probably will be sampling other tube amp topologies, but these will give you a solid, quality power base close to what you are used to, with quality. We also have a tendancy to hold on to our vintage tube amps even when we do buy a new one, because they are good! Look on Audiogon or Ebay, and you will notice that most modern tube amps take a 40-50% hit when resold. Most rebuilt vintage tube amps of reputable name sell for 80-120% of what the seller has in them. Whatever you do, we think you can't do much wrong in listening to a tube setup - they do sound gorgeous with Klipsch gear!
  20. Fini, knowing the full extent of GW 43's military training and record of towering scholastic achievement while attending Yale, I can imagine the conversation might have played out like this.... "Oh my goodnes, I think there are a couple of land mines in my drink!" (Buxom Matron) "Honey, look, over here. There are ice cubes in my drink, as well!" (Wife) "I'll be dammed, there's either ice cubes or a bunch of bomb things in my drink! Waiter..." (GDub) The scary thing is I just got a gift from the RNC in Missouri....it's a red and blue Roots beret. Hmmm
  21. Mike, is this the Sodexho Ultimate with Sweet Screams modification and Careless Whisper, Sorry, My Tounge Slipped a Groove Tunisian pine box? I think you won't be needing the Up a Creek passive linestage How does it sound? I'm bummed you aren't here in the Lou - we could have some fun on the roadtrip down to New Orleans to pick up the shorthorn! What are you going to do with the Carver? Heck, throw it on EBay with full description of your mods and how the transport is roughing you up. Some electrical genius will be happy to give you $400, and that will give you a running start to wrap up the 300B project Man, you'll be busy with Edmond sending you the other Eicos. That sounds like something Cyndi Lauper is singing. Catch ya later..
  22. PK, thanks for posting the picture of the sprinter involved in the Special Olympics. The look of transcendant joy on his face as he nears the finish line lightened my heart! Everyone has crosses to bear in their lives - it is how you individually carry yours that will determine if you lead a happy life. Max, thanks for putting an appropriate tag on that wonderful photo. Maybe it will help inspire another person to work as a hugger at an SO in their area. Fini, your picture was e-mailed to my bro over an encrypted military line. He is involved in the nasty juju in the Sunni Triangle, doing raids on a nightly basis for the next two weeks, and morale is way down after they had three people drown when their Strykers flipped at speed and landed in a large culvert. I have four e-mails from one stars and higher thanking us for sending a kick-*** laugher when they needed one the most. One went so far as to say there are no houses of ill repute in their area, so there has been a marked increase in dead kittens round the area!
  23. In talking to Craig, he noted that the base on the Scalas was much more present and "in your face", which is to be expected. Scalas have a very defined and coherent geometric enclosure the sound emenates from, while the base information from the Khorns will be more diffuse and present as a whole sonic palette. In listening tests, friends who play in rock bands like the Scalas more, while jazz and classical musicians DROOL over the Khorns. My listening area is 27' wide by 16' deep with one decent corner and one 1 ft deep wall kickout, so it's not an ideal Khorn setup, and they still sound frickin' gorgeous. The Scalas are a world better than the Heresys, and the Heresys are much, much better than the JBLs and Ohm C2s with which I started my stereo wars. Scalas will not shortchange you in any aspect - the concepts Paul worked with in the fourties are well incorporated in this design. The Khorns just have the advantage in that their size and voicing in a well designed corner setting are getting very close to a no compromise situation.
  24. The base enclosure for the Khorn is about four inches taller than the entire La Scala. Although base is omnidirectional, it follows the identical inverse square law for decreasing spl once you are at the 2.5-3m distance(and only an algebraic distance loss prior to this distance,) so your generic thumbrule loss would be a gross magnitude of 35% less base from the start at 3 meters, with another height travel loss of about 14%. These do not factor in the geometric volume that is producing the base, yet another loss. The La Scalas just do not load a whole room the way Khorns do. The second plus for the Khorns is the height of the top hat. At about 4.5 ft midpoint, the Khorns sound equally nice if you are sitting or standing, while the Scalas are definitely tipped toward better listening while sitting. In a smaller room, driving the Scalas to reach Khorn base loading levels will skew the high end far more than you want to listen to for long periods. When I got the Khorns, either the Scalas or Belles were going to be pushed off the boat. The Belles had a slightly smaller footprint, and had a much preferred Walnut versus the Scala's birch. My electrician LOVES the Scalas with Fini's HK 430 I listened to Mike Stehr's Corns quite a bit. It will be interesting to see how the '56 shorthorn measures up to them. My wife is also interested to see how "miniature" this shorthorn is!
  25. Kelly, how do I make my equipment list smaller? I like taking up less room in my signature so I have more room to declaim
