  1. Since the response has been totally underwhelming, causing massive layoffs and grief, here is the scoop... Dutch's pawn shop Spokane, WA 800.747.5284 www.dutchs.com Surly staff Poor selection High prices Terrible quality Fini, clueless, and numerous other forum members with a humurous bent would love working here! Kinda like going to Mike's place to listen to heavy metal with a five watt tube amp Warning: PAWN SHOP with Klipsch...
  2. Hey guys, I can't squeeze any more speakers in my house, so I will pass this one to the forum. There is a set of Klipsch La Scala base bins at a local pawn shop with a listed price of $400; I'll be coy and say the pawn shop is near Ford, WA. I have seen them played, sound good (ie not blown,) and I am sure the owner will let them out the door for $3-350. The nearest Forward Air office is Seattle, but you could probably work a shipping deal if desired. I have not seen the woofers up close and personal, but it would be possible if I know tomorrow or Wednesday. I have seen the top hats on E-bay, but never the base bins. These are in decent shape, with all the aluminum stripping in place and well screwed. I would be happy to relay information and/or bargain for a price, but the final decision would be yours. If these were in St. Louis at a pawn shop, they would be mine tonight, but they are not. This store also has a robust pair of Klipsch, about four ft tall, three way, with a second rear woofer. Don't know the model or price, as they are barricaded in an area. I leave here Friday, so e-mail me if you have any interest. No $ needed at my end. This part of WA has some great stereo deals; I have picked up a $10 DBX 3BX expander, a $17 Macintosh MC275, and a $21 Nakamichi CD player. Mike Stehr has aggravated me with his tasty console tube amps on the cheap, so I will searching for a SET console find when I get home. Cheers
  3. Hang loose, if you can hang out for about a week, you can catch me at my place in south county. Directions are hard - 44E to 270S to Telegraph, go north three blocks, and west three blocks. You can listen to 1990 Khorns with a Dynaco ST 70, Quicksilvers, or an older HK 630 solid state. They will be very close to a new set, but you will need to help me kill some of the thirteen cases of cold frosty brew in the fridge!
  4. Paul, out of curiousity, are you the same Paul Parrot I served with aboard the USS Greenpig in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club back in the 80's? You seem to have the same speech patterns, although anyone who talks these days could be construed to be similar. Too much nocturnal medication, you know!
  5. Gary, hook the MX 110 back up and use it for a couple days. Go buy a good power cord, take all back to the shop and talk to the tech. Build up a history with the tech, so even if this new cord does the trick, the tech knows how you operate for future dealings with broken stuff. I work with Ludlum Instruments on all the sites in the country, and they know that defective items I send back really are defective and need serious attention. Techs always like dealing with small repairs versus catastrophic fires I'll be getting the check in the mail late tomorrow. Ciao
  6. Frz, they don't even have a scratch on them. They are in the original double shipping boxes, but they did not have the wood sides. My Amish friend owes me big time, and he has promised to build some solid walnut sides. Mike and I had some good laughs listening to the Cornwalls on his inky dinky lil 5 watt SET monos, and I was hoping to listen to his 15 watt stereo push-pull the second time we hooked up. Unfortunately, a leaking cap made us break out the Sansui - holy jumping Jehosaphet, Batman! Hiss, hard punchy base, and Chicago's horn section sounded like a bag of cats howling in the moonlight. The beer tasted great, and I got my Klipsch fix for the month until I make it home. Push came to shove, and Mike won...two beers and Chicago's Greatest hits on the Rhino double CD. I got the DBX stuff. I probably won't be using the A/V router, Frz, but I can't even figure out half the functions. I am hoping I can install the expander after the el cheapo CD player I have and improve the sound source before the tube pre and amp. If you have need for the router, a few tubes would probably persuade me to send it toward Lake Bomeseen!
  7. Gary, my wife will kill me when she finds out, but I will buy the preamp with the case. I hope you realize I'll probably be paying for a trip to Montreal or Paris (sigh.) I will now have a great new school tube setup and a very solid old school tube setup. Dueling khorns and belles, with a set of heresies upstairs relegated to the undercard. Send me your contact information, and I will give you a ring tomorrow between 9 and 10 am, unless someone gets crushed by an earthmover here in Ford, Washington at the mill site. Thanks, Dave
  8. Dean, you can borrow any of my amps. I am finalizing the Dynaco ST 70 deal with Ken, and I could ask him to send it to you. I also have the 299c or LK 72 that need sorting, or Dee's 299c that Craig already has massaged. Best of all, your Quicksilvers would be overjoyed to visit you again if you wanted. My cousin is going to school at Dayton, so a road trip would be possible. The morning safety meeting is about to start, so adios....let me know!
  9. Dean, if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. I can't buy the Moore, but I can try to help you in any way possible. Our prayers are with you.
  10. Craig, Right now it is up to seven. The top of the food chain is the Quicksilvers, then the Dynaco and Dee's 299c you massaged, the other 299c, the LK 72, the baby Dynaco and Sherwood mono that I scored by dumpster diving, and I in pursuit of another LK 72 and the 299c receiver out here in Spokane for $100. There may also be a set of pro La Scala base bins out here. I have too many sets of heritage speakers and (obviously) too many amps, especially since I am not counting any of the solid state that I have. I have three friends back in St. Louis that are clamouring for a setup, and I have my nephew's wedding next spring AND my favorite cousin will be getting married as well. It is really great fun to introduce others to Klipsch, and even better to help them get a good deal on a system they will enjoy for the rest of their lives if they want! Good homes, all. My electrician friend currently has the birch La Scalas running with th HK 430 that Fini sent me. He swears it is the best setup he has ever heard, and he designs and installs pro sound setups that can run in the mid five figures. He is very anxious to hear how the sound changes when he can drop the 299c in the mix. I am still bent over the MC 240 deal that went awry, but I figure I didn't spend $1,400 on that amp, and I will drop about $500 to get this one in the house, a savings of $900. I will be trying to hammer out a flexible two channel/five channel flex setup with the Quicks, ST 70, and the best 299c. I'll let you know if it turns into a monster, or if it sounds beautiful.
  11. KJ, I tried to send you a pm, but it keeps failing. I will buy the ST 70. Just e-mail me your address and we can swap info when I get to a real computer. Our zip is 63111. Thanks, Dave
  12. Fini, guess I need to 'fess up. I accidently took my checkbook into the hot shop at work and brainlessly wrote out the check for the HK 430 while I was removing some fuel rod debris. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT open that letter! I was delayed from mailing the check for five days while being deconned at the military hospital... oops, sorry, the memory loss and loss of hair are really hard to overcome. I mailed you the check two months ago(sob!) I can't even get my old job as a Rogaine model back, but wait 'til next years' crops! Your bib lettuce will be verdant and three feet tall
  13. Maron, and others I am trying to schedule a get together for the first or second full weekend Saturday in November in St. Louis. As you are one of the people we definitely want to be able to attend, which date would be better for you, Nov. 8 or 15? We are planning on either jambalaya or SuperSmokers BBQ, and yes, we could get Ted Drewes and turn the event into a pigout. I have Dean's old Quicksilver MC 60s, a Cary AES-3, and a cheapo CD player, along with the cornerhorns, Belles, La Scalas, and sundry Heresys. I don't know if I will have a 299c or LK-72 up, but ARF has a 299a NOS rebuild and is interested in exercising it if he can make it. What is your poison?
  14. You also have Best Sound on Lindbergh in Creve Coeur, and Hi-Fi-Fo-Fum on Manchester and on Big Bend just north of Hgway 40, or farty as they tend to say in the Lou. Tell us what municipality you may be living in, and we can let you know whose system you might be hearing from a distance I may be having a get together in early November, check it out in Two channel!
  15. If there is enough interest, how about a get together in St. Louis at our house on either Saturday, November 8 or November 15 for some food, beers, and serious listening. I will (hopefully) be done in Washington state and be back home, with some bear sausage in hand, another two sets of heresys, another three LK-72s, and some great CDs. I have talked to Thom, the owner of Flip's, and he is trying to line up a co-owner of Eastern Electric to come down from Chicago to give a presentation and demo of their newer tube preamp that Kelly et al have conversed on in a recent thread. An audio engineer friend is going to run an audio analysis of our listening room, and Phil will let us know just how bad the listening environment is, and also what steps we can take to improve the sow's ear. Arf, Henry, Maron, and some of the lurkers, let us know and we can get a good crowd together and have some fun listening, arguing, and telling tall tales. Chiao
  16. Hey everyone, checked on audiogon, where this gentleman now has the listing, and he has jacked the price up $295 and has moved to California - but he still wants the Western Union sent to Germany. A second buyer walked as well after reading of our misadventure, as he ran into the same instraigence. I still have not figured out where he claims the amp is located, but he was unwilling to use an escrow service. He undoubtably will find some starstruck novice with more lira than cranium.
  17. Here's the latest...from an eBay member I got today... Hello, I noticed that you recently used BUY IT NOW to purchase a Mcintosh MC240 amplifier on Ebay....Today the same amp was again up for auction, did the deal fall through? I'm not being nosey, but I'd like to purchase the amplifier,I then noticed its on Audiogon for $1695 with a different username but same pic and description Please let me know if this is a fraud before I make payment Thanks, Mac Coincidence? Hmmm....
  18. Dean, we have not hooked them up yet, but I am getting them familiar with the cornerhorn that each will be driving! They have been patiently waiting for a preamp, and the first week I was out here in WA, I bought an AES 3. Everything is waitng for my return to be connected, and then will be waiting another month for me to finish the uranium mill demo. I will have time to put everything together, but it is our anniversary next weekend, and we have Colleen's work party, her family reunion, and lots of honey-do errands deferred for a month. Not a weekend to sit down and listen for two or three hours to the new stereo(FINALLY!!!) I will let you know in December how it all sounds, and I may need some advice on what interconnects to use and where to get them for a reasonable price. I want most of my extra money going for baby toys for the little one. We hope your wife and jr. are doing well! Thanks
  19. Hello all, It's Dave's wife (Colleen) again...here's an update on the Macintosh story. After the expletive laden e-mail I got from TGY (the german yahoo) Saturday insisting that I send him $1400 immediately, I sent him an e-mail and told him to keep it. He told me he'll just re-list it, like it was nothing. Would anyone leave negative feedback? I know this guy can get my address.
  20. Mike, e-mail me your address and phone #. I'll give you a call and maybe visit. My Mac deal fell apart on the back end, so I have moved the MC 275 and then got some egg on my face trying to buy the MC 240 from a guy in Minnesota. I am 0 for Minnesota right now, as I was unsuccessful in buying an AES preamp earlier last month from another piece of work living in the land of a thousand lakes. This will all work out great, I'm sure. I have a little extra to spend on my wife's anniversary present, and there will be a great deal pop up for something I can appreciate just as much as the 240. I might buy a HDTV when I get back home, so we can have the 2/4 channel home entertainment and stereo setup in the basement. The gentleman was a little too impatient, and offered no second option on how to close the transaction. My wife did some quick digging - he had no sales, just 15 buys; his account had been changed in the past thirty days; he insisted on Western Union to a foreign country; he would not say where the amp was located; he needed the money immediately when it was a scheduled seven or ten day auction; and the kiss of death - he used language with my wife in the second e-mail. I like to buy gear from people who call or e-mail me after the purchase to ask how I like the new-to-me sound, and this gentleman would never qualify. I am on the horn with E-Bay, and it looks like they will dismiss any negative feedback. Fini, Colleen did not buy the amp, but I always let her know beforehand if I am going to drop major buckos on what is now toys (I arbitrarily have set the limit at 1,000 pounds or 15 items, and I definitely exceed both thresholds now if you count sets of speakers in that,) so she helps cover our backside by sleuthing and running background checks. I am 99% certain this saved me $1,400.
  21. Hi guys! Happy weekend! I'm Dave's wife and I just want to forward this warning. There is a guy on eBay called frankjones59@aol.com trying to sell a Macintosh 240 in Chandler, MN. He claims he'll honor money orders or cashier's checks, that is until you win, like I did. Then he insists on Western Union to Germany (Berlin). Here's his latest e-mail. I have, of course, reported him, but I'm not holding my breath: Return-Path: Received: from imo-m03.mx.aol.com (imo-m03.mx.aol.com <64.12.136.6>) by camel.propagation.net (8.9.3p2/8.8.5) with ESMTP id FAA26261 for ; Sat, 20 Sep 2003 05:22:30 -0500 From: FrankJones59@aol.com Received: from FrankJones59@aol.com by imo-m03.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v36_r1.1.) id 8.d3.22701b4c (15887) for ; Sat, 20 Sep 2003 06:27:10 -0400 (EDT) Received: from aol.com (mow-m01.webmail.aol.com <64.12.184.129>) by air-id08.mx.aol.com (v96.6) with ESMTP id MAILINID82-3e0f3f6c2b7eed; Sat, 20 Sep 2003 06:27:10 -0400 Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2003 06:27:10 -0400 To: c....@cberding.com Subject: Re: Congratulations! I don't need a cashier's check here.I can get a significant discount from stores in bankruptcy only if I pay cash. This is the reason why I want to use instant cash transfer services. I will pay for the shipping cost and you for the money transfer fee(around $70). SO,If you want my ****ing McIntosh MC 240 send the ****ing money today or tomorrow. If not ,I assure you that it was a real pleasure to talk with you. I apologize for my language but believe me ,you are so stubborn and you made me so nervous. Thank you for understanding! Frank Here's a couple of great sites I found while searching last night on google.com for "western union" and "ebay" and "scam". In other words, Western Union = 95% bogus. FYI eBay will not cover ANY transactions via Western Union for fraud protection. http://www.audioweb.com/Ad/AdSearch.asp?mode=1&adsummary=1&adcategoryid=2 http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/snipe_gt/
  22. Q-man, I have to call my wife back in Missouri, and talk to my electrical engineer friend about rerouting of the wires on the Khorns. I am happy with the way my AA Belles sound, so I was thinking about replacing the AK3s. I am heading over to Fort Lewis today to visit my youngest brother prior to his deployment - I will give you a shout Monday am to let you know. If I were home, I already would be able to make a decision, so I apologize for the delay. Thanks
  23. I am working on the decommissioning and demolition of a uranium mill in Ford, WA, about half an hour north of Spokane. The country is beautiful, and Mike Stehr knows the area intimately. I think he grew up in this neck of the woods. It is immediately adjacent to the Spokane Reservation. It is pretty rough being away from my Klipsch, and even more importantly, from my wife and eight month old boy. Having the Mac fall into my lap made this trip worthwhile, and I love to travel and see God's glory. I just wish the glory was within a three hour drive of home. There are plenty of jobs in the rad field, and being a glorified garbageman is quite well compensated. I would be glad to pass employment info along to any board members who might be interested. This field will be a lurking growth industry for the next ten years, and right now we are short about 500 people nationwide. I can pick and choose where I want to go, if I want to travel at this point. I don't want to right now, but we also like to see our take home $ bump up for the next two or three years. I need to make sure the next site I work at is near a Klipsch owner! The two nearest I know about are Moonman and Lynn, and High River is a long drive.
  24. Fini, I'm mad now, and feeling depressed that I paid you $35 for a HK 430, when the MC 275 cost only $20. I really fell off the elevator on this one! My friend electrical engineer Bob (have about fifteen Bob friends, hence the designator with the name)has the 430 up and cranking. It has about five bad cold solder joints. He lets it warm up for a couple minutes, and then fires up the La Scalas with the KP 480 subwoofer. No pops whatsoever when warmed up. He loves it, and says it sounds wonderful even w/o the sub. He enjoys it so much, he is getting in about four hours a night restoring his four Hammond organs - a BC, a C3, an M type and I can't remember the fourth. Before I loaned him the setup, he had about ten minutes a night. He now loves Klipsch. When I get back home and Craig restores the 299Cs, let me know if you want to run one for a while. I would be glad to turf one out to you for a couple months, or just for one of those wild hula-bula California parties you are always throwing in wine country. The photos of the MC 240 look gorgeous, and it is a more suitable match with the Quicksilvers that Deansgirl made Dean sell. I am really looking forward to getting back to St. Louis next weekend to see my wife and little baby Liam, and then in December for good! I can start listening to all the new stuff....finally.
