  1. Hello: For the 2a3 Tele fan - I have at least one maybe more NOS in wrappin, in Tele box. Not Needed. Would trade for Bugle Boy 12ax7s or credit to 7591s or original owners manual for 299 C. Have a number of others NOS tubes - I'll give a 10 money if doa or fails or passes for anything but new - all in original NOS boxes (have Bugle Boy 7025s trade for 12AX7s0. I'll be sending Craig his - we had a minor 40,000 gallon gasoline "spill" from a pipe coming from the huge million gallon tanks about 1000 ft from my front door - 3 -4 year estimate for cleanup. I need to make room or get what I use rather than have them sitting around in caddies. Contact over the next 3 days. Win

Scott integrated's, I realize that they come in different versions, A, B, C, D etc. Is this a good one to get? The price seems fair if it is working correctly I suppose. Thoughts? Do they work best with a TT or CD as a source or do they do both well. I have always been fascinated with tubes but have never really owned any, I father in law that passed away awhile ago showed me his old, old HK Citatation I or II power and preamp that was all tube. It even had a center channel output from what I recall. We hooked it to some Pioneer speakers he had it hummed and buzzed though. I wish I could have taken that set off his hands. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3032209942&category=3280 ---------------- Greetings: The Scotts are a nice way to go. The advice re; NOSValves is on the money. I have noticed the prices of good, I can't say low end or entry level the Scotts are definitely better than that, have been rising. IMO this is due to the shrinking stock of NOS (new old stock) tubes, the chinese tubes questionable reputation and some of the new say 7591A's being larger and not quite fitting the Scott cabinets. The demand is higher: Marantz and McIntosh are both excellent, but have developed status symbol almost cult following, driving the price up to ridiculous levels and for those that can't or won't pay the prices you get a real tube unit, but those prices are going up due to re-sellers and greed. Another problem with McIntosh and Marantz plus certain tubes is that International buyers have obtained units, parts, quality tubes and are now selling them back to us with markups that would make the grinch cringe. I see this beginning to happen with Scott and Fisher tube, thus along with their popularity demand from within and outside of the country is beginning to raise prices. Example of McItosh markup: I bought my pair of McIntosh 60s for $209.50 for the pair, $10.00 for each box, came with original owners manuals - they are in 8/10 scale minimum - bought in '72 or '73. Check out the prices now for a single let alone a pair - and I paid $125.00 for my C-20 with cabinet, telefunkens (same with the 60s plus Gold Lion KT-88s) and as with 60s original manuals and service manuals and company ads. The 299 is a nice unit - go for it! Win

I am sorry for venting on you guys...and yes I do have a home made center. It is close to a Cornwall. I guess I remembered the look PWK gave me when I ask him about damping the mid horn on a Khorn. "...I spent 30 or more years making that speaker right, there is no neet to mess it up..." ( I dare not use his words. For we may be in mixed company) Lets just say, I wont be changeing any of my Cornwall speakers parts... And yes PWK did build a matching center for the Heritage series, It is the Cornwall. First built as a center for the Khorns in 1959. I understand were you all are coming from, and I guess I am gulity of some of the same things. I just have better insider info... Forgive me... And thank you for not coming down on me to hard. ---------------- Greetings: I was just cleaning out old messages and came upon this. To my knowledge, PWK did use Eminence as a main source in the late 60', and I'm not sure what year in the 70s. Of this my knowledge comes from owning 2 pair of LaScalas and having to change bass drivers on the 2nd set. This was due to poor bass response and on examination, found drivers had changed - both were Eminence. I also remember the name as Marshall Amplifiers used Eminence as their main supplier. And Trey, yes we do love Klipsch Speakers, however there are instances where we may be able to "tune" the speaker to a room (my Chorus IIs are very bright and I get listener fatigue), so I am looking to tame that - the loudness contour on my C-20 doesn't do it justice - it would wind up sounding a bit muffled. I am considering using the Yamaha CR1000 as a pre-amp as its loudness contour backs the mids down rather than boosting treble and bass and sending it then to my McIntosh 240s. So in the end yes I would like to back it down slightly at the speaker point - the guitar solo on Seger's "Like a Rock could probably shatter glass - in the same room the Chorus IIs are even brighter than my LaScalas could be. So I need to do something - I already had to re-fit and staple one of the corners of the riser due to gap and also re-glue the risers corner braces/attachment pieces. But I still do love my Klipsch.

More information would be helpful. What equipment are you using them with, what kind of room are they in, how are they placed, what sources, etc. etc. ---------------- Greetings: I'm using a McIntosh C - 20, McIntosh 240s strapped for mono, a Sony 2251 TT with Shure/SME 3009 II arm and Ortofon OM 40 Gold Cartridge. 6. Hello: Have noticed Chorus IIs a bit bright. How do I get to the mid and tweeter to wrap with rope caulk? Also Anyone know of an original 299 C owner's manual for sale? Also looking for a cabinet for it. Thanks, Win

Thus it could be possible that PWK designed the Bose system, it may have been the first of the change in marketing strategies leading to the ability of Best Buy to sell Klipsch and the possibility that the 75 will replace the RF7.:) (or does the "B" stand for Bose in the RB series - r =our B= Bose)

  9. I did forget, all speakers have the capability to be a P.A. - just put them where you wish announcements and possibly music to be heard.

When you want to hear special effects, that incredible hi-fi sound (that imitates PA sounds)... ---------------- The two important points are: still an illusion and that incredible hi-fi sound... All recordings are an illusion of the actual performance no matter what is used, tube or SS, to play them back. To PWK he was looking to the best Hi-Fi "sound." The goal is to have no "sound." An Engineer is trying for the closest to reality - the Engineer is limited to the equipment he or she has to use, the consumer has more choice for playback equipment that suits his or her desires/perceptions/hearing and choice of music. Money/equipment costs alone do not dictate the played back sound to be correct and perfect. What is one mans trash..... Tube or SS - it's a subjective topic, medium and enjoyment. To others it's brand x of speaker or that huge Klipsch-Horn. No one person can dictate what type of equipment to use. It is a CHOICE of what one likes and if an open mind is kept, one has room for tube and solid state - they are both trying to reproduce what is recorded and somewhere along the way from recording to pressing or burning, you will find both have been used. There is no black or white only thousands of shades of grey or shall I spell it gray.....
  11. I'd recommend "Winter In America" by Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson. The album version if possible. Great recording, nice upscale jazz.
  12. Okay we have the tube end - after working with Marshalls, Fenders, Hiwatts, Orange, Sunn etc., those were and still are a vast portion of what was used. Some complain that when Marshall went to auto-production they lost their "sound." Funny, the hand wired had a sound - all alike to some, the auto wired had no sound but a lot of guitarists continued to use them, they were still tube. The Solid State end: some Marshalls, Acoustic, Kustom. Live in Concert - up to the point where P.A.'s were given enough power, you had the musical amplifiers doing their brunt and the vocals and drums handled by P.A. systems. Three or four stacks of Marshalls, Fender Super Showman. Keep in mind the difference in tone and sound of a Gibson ES 330 Hollow Body, a Les Paul or the Fenders mainly the Stratocaster, some Telecasters were the mains. If you know it you can hear it, you can pick out a Fender from a Gibson. The plastic pickguard on the Fender gives a different sound. Now add the P.A. - when P.A.s started getting megawatts they were mostly solid state. Bands figured put everything through the P.A. - mic all amps run them through the Solid State mixers and SS P.A.s. Recording studios: used some tube mics into SS boards into sometimes tubed Reel to Reels. With peaks and valleys in all of our hearing curves, amplifiers, tube or SS, Speakers - Differences in Cartridges - Ortofon, Grado, A-T, Blue Point and all of the above (Don't forget that bands increase their volumes a good bit for the last few songs - louder is better, more fun at concert) Is there any wonder why we have these discussions? PWK used a 10 watt amplifier with K-Horns in a concert hall, tube amp I believe. Bob Dylan's last 2 tours had sound techs that kept most levels at one point in the place at 105db, no louder. Sound is subjective, except for watts needed for volume increases and dynamics and lol, smooth plate vs ribbed Telefunkens. I had my C-20 components upgraded to me it sounds a bit sterile now. We get used to the breakdown of components we use until they're so far out of whack.... Tubes or Solid State usually boils to a disagreement, but the individual that is listening must like the sound, no matter the source - they know and choose. Last the psychology: some cannot accept concert volume from anything but a Heritage, because so many P.A.s are large horn. Yes I sold my LaScalas I needed the room and it is strange to see the Chorus IIs and think concert volume. We all agree to disagree. How much actual dynamic range do records or cds use, most push the limit on all passages. Sorry I wandered - I started carrying amps for groups in '68, took The Eastman School of Music Recording session and worked for many groups, toured with them and worked in studios before a 2nd career in Criminal Justice. BTW don't forget the type of mic used. The sound of an Orchestra or Leslie West live goes through many channels before we hear it on any medium. There is no right or wrong answer, except 200 watts into a LaScala. I wouldn't even push my MC 60 full into one of mine. BTW: Are we using RMS, peak, federal standard, IPP or any of the other standards for measuring amp output?

  17. Hello: A great idea, could help people to get to know Klipsch by coming to that topic and then seeing the real audio topics. I wonder how often the Moderators read or check the topics they're listed for. And I've wondered why Trey Cannon lists his name twice a lot - does he get stuck with a double shift for each one?
  18. My two cents: I have McIntosh Tube (C-20, 60's, 2 240s, 30s, MX-110) and I have Solid State (Yamaha CR-1000, McIntosh 2120, Adcom, Sony V-FET Integrated, Technics (yeah), and NAD). All but the Adcom have been hooked to LaScalas, Cornwall IIs, Heresys, Chorus IIs and Paradidigm mini-monitors. With the exception of the Heresys and the Mini-Monitors, I can peg a calibrated 140 db Sound Level Meter - advantage of being with the Crime Analysis Unit - now medical retired, 6/10. A big factor no matter what - hearing loss or Tinnitus (constant ringing in your ears.) Former Sound Tech, Sound and Recording Engineer (live and Studio.) It does not take that much exposure to high levels to cause problems later in life. British thought that ringing, muffled hearing, shut-down,etc., was ear protecting itself - '60s & '70s theory. Wife works at Hearing & Speech Center, they do audio testing, hearing aid dispensing. Non-Profit Agency with over 200 employees PLUS you have Miracle Ear and others. End Lecture. Yamaha CR-1000 sounds great, McIntosh Solid State sounds great, same with NAD, Adcom, etc.. Sony V-fet sounds VERY close to tube. Use tube 90% of the time. Tube I own now (getting 299C) sounds to me to be closer to reality. I played bass guitar, autoharp. Come from family: Mother played Violin, Viola had perfect pitch. Father played Trumpet, Harmonica. Both Eastman School Graduates, Mother had full scholarship. What would I recommend? whatever sounds good to you - your hearing curve, your perception of instruments. Both Tube and SS sides are valid. I'm glad I bought my tube gear in '70s, before it was "in" and prices went high and new tube amps with price tags from $800.00 to $100,000.00 came out. New Jolida with good tubes isn't bad to me. Listen with your ears AND your wallet and remember sound is logarithmic - ear hears usual minimum 3db change. If 1 watt gives you 3db, you need 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 watts to notice change. Otherwise you are adding headroom before clipping/distortion. And even 2 watts can produce 120 watts of distortion at a single tone.
  19. Hello: As of late I've gone through some knee surgeries and 1 other E.D. visit for another problem. There was a post re: Cornwalls vs Chorus IIs - which sounded better. I had a pair of ChorusIIs and had them stored after about 10 minutes use until 4 or 5 weeks ago. Also own Cornwall IIs. Taking the pain med I have been, I knew it affected the hearing, as did the reason for the other visit. After an ordered stop to pain med - inter-action with other med I have to take, I listened closely to Chorus IIs. Not Right! Took speaker terminals out, found them out of phase from the factory. Cornwall IIs - smoother, warmer, no listener fatigue even on SS amps. More detail on low. Chorus IIs - brighter mids, good low, but not quite as good as Cornwall IIs - will try changing positions - if no improvement ....... Heresys _ where's the bass? ) Thought on newer model 2 - way speakers - good way to sell subs - this thought from 3 way dinosaur 2 channel listener.

  21. I bid sad Greetings: I had not intended to post tonight and there are probably those who wish I would not. Two gentle giants passed today although what they gave to us "baby-boomers" will last as long as we have a memory. Gregory Peck and David Brinkley left us today. Both had major influences on my life and some may say I am the better for those influences. I feel that I am. I am sitting here looking at what another Giant, created... Cornwall IIs. Mr. Klipsch is now joined by a Journalist, a teacher in the form of David Brinkley. And on this same day, Gregory Peck, whose voice has come through those Cornwall IIs as I have watched "To Kill A Mockingbird" has also passed The airwaves are a little quieter now, and in the small town of our hearts, Atticus Finch is sitting with Jeb, Scout and Boo Radley, and you know he will be there all night. Thank you for giving us the news each night, Mr. Brinkley. Thank you for a wonderful movie, Mr. Peck. I believe we are all better for the presence of these Giants. And now, we are a little smaller with the news of their passing. Goodnight Mr. Peck, Mr. Brinkley. And a goodnight to you Mr. Klipsch. You've given us a lesson in life. Thank all of you for this Forum. And GNW.

  24. To quote one poster: "LOTS OF LUCK" To me it is a case of one knowing what they want and researching it - the other just hearing that you can get the same brand for less elsewhere. The knowledge that there are different LINES when one store carried them all has to be imparted and the Reference Line has to stay the best the Company can offer, but if you're just looking at cost you go to the other store - no slam against the product lines or Best Buy. He was going to spend over $2500.00, she had heard you could buy Klipsch at a lower price elsewhere. Both parties had valid points - one more "assertive." Now it's a case of educating while tempers and attitudes are cool. But it could still be a loss of a Reference Line sale if he decides HE likes what he has and can buy something else for HT.
  25. Yes, he will be over. Sometimes when the wife or husband is not acting "tactfully" and they have heard that another store is selling the same BRAND for what seems to be less, arguing in the store would accomplish nothing. I guess to sum all of the posts and my original post up is to say: a. At this point, many people could get confused if they don't know product lines and models. KLIPSCH Reference is at one store, KLIPSCH whatever is at another with different prices. The brand is the same, the line is not. Klipsch needs to make sure that the models are not the same at both stores. We know Klipsch, most know the differences in Reference, Synergy, Pro-Media etc.. For years the public has seen Klipsch at the Audio specialty or presumed higher end stores. Now they find they can buy the brand - note the word brand, for what is perceived as less at another store. That was my point. As far as God is concerned, I noted room for non-believers, but they still have their mind as the possible higher being. I believe what I believe, I have room for other thoughts to be shown or not. A Priest, Minister, Agnostic I am not - and I would not be very good at them anyway. As one other signs: "Peace."
