They never had these included in the CliffNotes. My teachers told me I should have been reading the original materials! And now I know they were right! Finally we have a better class of flamers on this forum. For one, I am going to quit ending my sentences in prepositions to help out things. Can you tell me where the spell check is at? Kindest Regards, Dee
  2. Stickman, Welcome to the forum. There are lots of tube amps which would be fine with KHorns. Lots of flavors, and while it would be hard to go wrong with an amp from Cary Audio, SET is preferred by some and some folks don't care for it. I like the way SET 2A3's sound on my La Scalas. What many people find is that the 3.5 WPC just has inadequate headroom. If there is any way you can audition your options before purchase that's good. One thing that is helpful in checking out amps and other stuff is the used market on Ebay, Audiogon, and sometimes this forum... is that by making careful purchases, one can usually break even, and sometimes even making a few bucks reselling a piece of used equipment. If you buy new and then sell, no way to avoid taking a hit on the bucks. Regards, Dee
  3. Craig, You know very well that I think you are no worse than a plain vanilla scut. I am just still trying to figure out what a scut is. Of course, you could take offense to that... and say something defensive, like, Hey, I'm no ordinary scut! Dee
  4. ---------------- On 6/29/2003 2:48:18 PM Flux wrote: What does it matter who he is you impertinent ill-nurtured scut.---------------- FluxIan, I understand "impertinent", and I think I understand "ill-nurtured" (that's kind of like your mother did a poor job, right?) but "scut" is new word to me. Could you let me know what that is? I am given to understand the idea that he is ALOT worse than your ordinary, plain vanilla scut. But the sting of the invective is lost on those in a state of ignorant bliss. Are you sure you spelled "scut" right? Kindest regards, Dee
  5. NOZ-- You bet! Tom-- That's a good suggestion for being more systematic in listening to discern the difference and still having fun. Dean-- On the La Scala's triode is the slim favorite. I don't hear nearly the difference that the reviewers comment on. Tell you what, this Cary amp is a fine piece of equipment and compares very favorably to the 2A3. Clean clear sound. It is one of those can't go wrong propositions. Having the Rocket 88 head to head with the Paramours, is o.k. to choose one preferred over the other, but the the 2A3 world would say that there are better 2A3's to put up for comparison in a genre to genre shootout. It probably speaks very well of the Paramours' design and price point to stay in the ring with the Rocket 88. Still the Paramours have something that is magic. Listening to John Klemmer on sax and his light percussion and chimes, etc. Absolutely amazing. Craig-- That issue is never going to be put to rest! Cut-throat-- I've been thinking the same thing. It could be a plan to keep the 2A3's for the magic, and then having some power to fall back on when it's time to rock. Thanks for the feedback and food for thought, guys. BTW, one of the things that is the most fun about this whole tube thing is this weekend, my wife got up from her sewing project and came in and sat down on the couch and is getting into the listening, too. Even wanting to be in the conversation about the subtleties of the sound. Is that cool or what? The WAF curve is looking good around here! Regards, Dee
  6. P.S. Now if someone would build some La Scala vaults. Then some K Horn vaults would be the coolest. Think of the possibilities for enriching the sound culture of the community!!! Dee
  7. Dean, This is cool and a fine asset to the forum community! We do need at least on pic. to further appreciate the labor of love! Regards, Dee
  8. Craig, You are right about taking the time to listen to all kinds of music. I'm going to do that and just enjoy it all. Regards, Dee
  9. NOZ, I'll be looking forward to hearing about how you like them. Have only read about the Manley's, but one thing I am sure of, you'll have plenty of headroom. I've been listening to my La Scalas for a few days on a 40 WPC Cary Rocket 88 and it could probably push a room full of La Scalas. Well, I don't actually know what kind of load it could run w/o getting in trouble. But it ought to be more than ample muscle for the job. Regards, Dee
  10. Well, friends... I have been doing some listening to amps and here's what sounds good to my ears: Of course the 299b is solid and good sound. For several days I listened to a Cary Rocket 88 power amp that is switchable on the fly between triode and pentode UL power. 20 wpc or 40 wpc. Cool amp. Bullet proof build and sounds great. Now during this time I was waiting on a pair of 2A3 Paramours from a member of this forum. During the week I'd told my buddy, "I can't imagine tubes sounding any better than this Cary amp." Yep, I said that, but you can call me Gomer because when I heard the SET monoblocks, gaaaaaahh lleeeee! That magical sound! Wow. yeh. Feedback from this forum has been helpful in looking and listening to different tube options. For example, I'd considered sending off an ST-70 for a rebuild and after reading the posts in response to my question regarding rebuild options, I realized that course, while it's a can't go wrong kind of option, just would not likely have accomplished what I was looking out for and listening for. I'm learning as I go and it's fun, too. I'm going to listen for a few more days before putting the Rocket 88 up for sale. I will offer it to the forum before going to Audiogon or Ebay just in case anyone here might want it. It will be a good deal, too. Picked it up, mint condition, from a motivated seller. If you'd be interested in reading about it, check out the website at caryaudio.com. They've got specs and reviews. In my experience, I found the reviews to be born out in what I heard in the amp in person. So, Cary does some impressive stuff. It's a fine piece of audio equipment, just have this WAF thing and need to stay riding the crest of the wave. It has been a pleasant surprise to see her enjoyment of music now with tubes. Just one of those cool bonding things. Regards, Dee p.s. I've got another buddy I'm hoping to have bring by his Welborne 300b's. hint hint
  11. The following is an excerpt from an Associated Press article today. For the full story check out: www.wire.ap.org Jun 26, 6:35 AM EDT Music Labels Step Up Online Piracy War By TED BRIDIS AP Technology Writer WASHINGTON (AP) -- The music industry pledged to begin steps Thursday to file lawsuits against hundreds of individual computer users who illegally share music files on the Internet, an aggressive gamble to cripple online piracy by suing some of music's biggest fans. The Recording Industry Association of America, citing significant sales declines, said it would begin searching Internet file-sharing networks Thursday to identify music fans who offer "substantial" collections of MP3 song files for downloading. It urged users to uninstall popular music-sharing software or adjust program settings to prevent such downloads. The RIAA expects to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking financial damages within eight to 10 weeks. Executives for the RIAA, the Washington-based lobbying group that represents major record labels, would not say how many songs on a user's computer might qualify for a lawsuit. The new campaign comes just weeks after U.S. appeals court rulings requiring Internet providers to readily identify subscribers suspected of illegally sharing music and movie files. RIAA President Cary Sherman said that after Thursday, tens of millions of Internet users of popular file-sharing software will be exposing themselves to "the real risk of having to face the music." He said the RIAA plans only to file lawsuits against Internet users in the United States.
  12. So thankful for the safety of your family. Even giving thanks, it is such a violation to have someone enter your home with ill intent! Thanks for sharing about the police officers remarks and really glad that you cranked up some tunes for them. Blessings, Dee
  13. Tony, You are getting excellent advice on bid sniping. It is the only way to go on Ebay. If the time of auction close in inconvenient for you, check out bidslammer.com.... User friendly way to snipe bids in the last five seconds. First three snipes are free. Cool place. I picked up an item last week that otherwise, I would have had to miss church to get! Regards, Dee p.s. these pieces of horns and stuff would be fun to go through and check out.

Tom ---------------- Tom, you are going to love these. Of course, at some point you'll realize that your life would be complete if you only had some of Al K's ALK networks. You could build them yourself from the schematic he has so kindly placed on his site. '84... Yes, that was a very good year. Dee
  15. Thank you Dean! I actually feel better now than I did before logging on. Regards, Dee

With Klipsch Heritage, I think 12WPC might be just right. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3031565956&category=3284 I have a 299C that I'm selling if you're interested. It works, but probably needs NOSValves hands in it to really make it nice. I'm in Maine, come see and hear it if you want. I can send you pictures. But I think that one on ebay might be a pretty nice unit, depending on what happens to the price in the next couple of days. Greg ---------------- Greg, Is your 299c the one which has the balance/volume control on the center channel? That would be a fine feature to control line out to a sub. That is great for flexibility. In reading on the Scott forum, it seems that it was in only one version of the 299c that this feature was offered. Dee
  17. Hey Win, You bet. I'll be looking for your post! Dee Double post, what?
  18. Hey Win, You bet. I'll be looking for your post! Dee
  19. Well, I sure have enjoyed my 299B. For me it has been a good way to get into tubes w/o breaking the bank. I hear people with alot of tube experience compare the quality of sound in these amps to higher priced amps. In bang for the buck it can be a good deal. They can be rebuilt to get to spec with good results. Regards, Dee p.s. if you get this amp, hope you can post about your reaction to the sound.
  20. Chris, What an evening, with fine folks, fine food, and fine sound. Thanks for passing this along. Regards, Dee

'"Had ( Dennis Had, the designer ) believes that gain and buffer stages negatively affect transparency, so his goal was an “amplifying device with minimal gain to provide the output power to drive the speakers.” That means the Rocket 88 requires a high-output preamplifier. It took out my reference preamp, the Wyetech Opal (15dB gain) and substituted Cary’s SPL 2002, used in designing the Rocket 88. The 2002 has 20dB of gain, so I suggest that as the minimum matching requirement." A good amp for the Lascala. I'd love to have two of them in a vertical biamp configuration. ---------------- Dean, Here's what the Sunfire preamp manual says: (I share this because in my very lay understanding which is very close to confusion, I need some help interpreting it ) "The output inpedence of the Classic is a low 1.5K ohms, so it can drive power amplifiers having virtually any input impedence." Further states can use conventional cables as long as 30 feet, or low capacitance cables as long as 60 feet to drive power amps without difficulty. On the webpage, states 8 volts output, but no mention of how many db's of gain this would be. Tony, Thanks for your thoughts on your experience with the Mk IV's. That's helpful. Regards, Dee
  23. Dean, Was reading one of your posts from back in Feb. to someone who was considering a Cary Rocket 88. You were asking the person about their preamp, because there were quite a few folk selling their 88's due to a mis matched preamp, too low power for the 88. I was wondering what you'd look for in a competent preamp to match with the 88 and if the Sunfire Classic Tube Preamp would be a good candidate to match with the Cary 99? Appreciate your take on this and any others who would offer a comment. Regards, Dee
  24. Mark, Thanks for your post lining out options on the ST-70. That's some genuinely helpful info. Sometime next week I'm going to be able to listen to some 2A3 (Paramours) and I'm definitely looking forward to that. Hearing folks talking about listening to amps that are emotionally involving has got me certainly curious. I like being emotionally involved We'll just have to see if the lack of headroom leaves a satisfactory (to my ears) option. Also curious about the 300b, and hope to have a chance to audition of these sometime. In the price range of $1100, I'd sure be interested to hear from you and others as to some amps that are good bang for the buck candidates. Assuming a couple of given, taste in music is mostly jazz, vocals, and some classic rock. Not needing to shake the house often. Perhaps assuming a preamp already on site... Sunfire Classic Tube. I've got one for audition right now and listening to it on the ST-70. Sounds pretty good and has some friendly features like remote and some bass and treble contour available. Probably could assume used/good condition or some other turn key option. Appreciate your thoughts and any one else who would want to weigh in here. Regards, Dee
  25. Mace, Thanks for posting the pics. Wish I could have been there, too. HDBRBuilder built your corns? in the factory? He is one talented guy. He built my Oak LaScala cabs and they are a work of art with all the fine attention to matching grain. I need to get some pics of them posted on the board. Regards, Dee
