  1. Are there no Mac gurus's in here? Help R
  2. Don't know about brave but it wasn't a loud noise or I wouldn't have tried it again. As soon as I can sort all the bullsh!t out of the amps I'll let you know what I think of the sound.
  3. Got my macs back thursday and finally got some time to hook them up and listen to them yesterday for about 4 hours and everything sounded fine. Turned all the equipment back on this morning and didn't put in a cd right away, two minutes later I was back to the left amp motorboating. The two 6550's alternate getting brighter. Shut it down and waited, turned it back on and put in a cd right away and I'm still listening an hour later with no problems. I know the problem is still there but what next. Replaced the 4 can filters on top of the unit and thought that would finally cure it. MDENEEN's pre does sound good with the mac's and the dyna's. Randy

  5. My cd player sounds bad in the "CD" input on my McIntosh, great on the "Phono" input. Your problem may be related. DM ---------------- Doesn't your phono input have RIAA equalization? Something's wrong there or I'm not understanding your reply, sorry to butt in.

I bought a pair of lascala's off ebay and they never quite sounded right. When replacing crossovers I found that one midrange horn was out of phase at the driver. Good God Man, HOO!
  7. Has anyone ever used a Sota Sapphire turntable? If so what do you think the value of a used one would be? I've had one for years and it still works fine and sounds good.I'd recommend it if the price was right and it was in good shape. Price wise I couldn't say what the going price is now. In 1986 or so I bought a demo for $800.00 with a Sumiko tone arm on it.
  8. Don't forget MDENEEN's Blueberry in your search or are you looking for vintage or used?
  9. Two more days! Wednesday one "Blueberry" is due in, can't wait to hear it. Hoping to get my macs back by then also altho the dynaco's sound great too. In fact I should really listen to the dyna's for awhile before changing. Ahh the H'll with it, if they're here I'll listen to the macs with them first. Randy
  10. A $75.00 dollar 1952 3/4 ton panel truck from a local florist shop. Brake lines blew on the way out of their driveway. Should have seen the look on the gas stations attendents face when I used the tire covered guard rail for a brake. My Father and Mother both had some push button trannys. Mom had a 1962 Dodge with a 383 and 4 barrel and Dad drove a 1964 Chysler with a 383 and a two barrel. I got to use Mom's car alot! If I remember right it also was a putrid shade of brown and tan.
  11. Ray,I agree, lack of bass and treble could very well make it easier to differentiate the midrange making it easier to hear John's harmony to Paul's lead vocal. Just another line of thinking to why perhaps a wire would make a differance. A wire that had problems doing the lows and highs could make the mid's sound sweeter, no?
  12. ---------------- On 3/29/2004 9:29:52 PM DrWho wrote: how's the polarity on your speakers? if they're out of phase, you'll lose the low end which in turn makes them sound harsh and midrangey. are your woofers working? ---------------- Bought a pair of lascalas off ebay about 18 months ago and was disapointed in there sound compared to my older 76 lascalas. Thought it might be the newer crossovers, the 76's had AA's. When I bought a pair of AA's from a member of the community and installed them they still didn't sound right. Started cleaning the connections to the speakers and discovered that someone had swiched the leads on one of the squawkers so one was out of phase. Switched them and great. What I'm trying to say is check inside your speaker and make sure someone hasn't goofed something up inside.

Don't know why.
  14. My position. Our senses are interconnected. It is easier to distinguish subtle difference in taste when you can smell something than it is when your nose is plugged. It is easier to distinguish subtle differences in touch when you can see what you're touching that it is when you're blindfolded. Why is it such a stretch to say that you can detect subtle, but real, differences in sound between two things when you can see them, but you can't when you don't know which is which? For example, take coke and pepsi. (Yes, I know there are chemical differences that are identifyable via analysis, but that's not the point.) Most people have a preference. If you sit someone down, and give them two bottles, one coke and one pepsi, and say Which to YOU prefer? most people will pick one or the other. However (and if you've never tried this, you should) if you pour a bunch of identical glasses, some coke, some pepsi, and ask people to distinguish which is which when there's no identifiable marking indicating such, people quickly become confused and can't score higher than random chance when trying to pick which is which (or rather, which they like better). I did this for a science project in high school with 400+ subjects, almost every one of which insisted that they had a significant preference for one or the other. Does that mean that they really taste the same, and you can't tell which is which under blind conditions? I don't think so. I think it means they taste different, but you can't identify the differences under blind conditions. Using the feedback provided by being able to see which is which allows the olfactory / taste organs to pick up subtle differences and clues that you simply can't sense without the reinforcement provided by seeing what you're tasting. IMHO. So, I guess this means that if you drank cola from unbranded, identical containers it wouldn't matter whether they were bottled by coke or pepsi. But you don't. You know what you're drinking. And that knowing allows you to detect differences that you could not detect did you not know. And as those differences are both detectable and real, you wind up with a preference. I fully believe the same sort of thing is going on with audio, whether we're talking amps, or preamps, or cables, or interconnects, or whatever. If you can't see or identify two or more different components when comparing them, the differences must be quite large to be able to hear them. Different speakers, for example. But just because you can't identify two different interconnects under double blink listening conditions doesn't mean you can't identify differences given the visual feedback of what you're listening to. Okay, I have my Nomex shorts on... ---------------- I did a 3 way test with my wife and next door neighbor lady who didn't believe I could tell the diff between jif, kroger brand and skippy peanut butter while blindfolded. Nailed all three thank you. Pass the blueberrys, thanks, Randy

Ignore them. I am confident in what I have perceived as the differences between the different cables I have used; I am comfortable with the money I have paid to get the cables and resulting sound I want. Those who beg to differ either cannot or have not heard the difference, and that's them. You and I and MANY other audiophiles know what we hear, and if you want to share this experience, I would recommend the Home Theater Spot Manufacturer Brand Wiring and Cables group, where the founder of the Spot (Paul Carleton) has banned any "cables are just cables" threads. As much as I agree with so many of the Klipsch forum members about the wonderful sound of Klipsch speakers, the cable question is one I try to avoid (except to agree with and defend cable-proclaimers), given the kind of response you are receiving now... ---------------- This is an interactive type forum. Nobody is flaming anybody. When you (or anybody) states that cables make a significant difference in your or anybodys system then you are open for a differing opinion. If someone else hadn't stated that not everyone thinks that high priced wires are the way to go I'd have jumped in. It is an opposing opinion and nothing else. Please keep it positive. I've learned a lot here, thanks to all, Randy

I think what John said above is probably true. The only measureable difference I see is "Q". The Solen coil of #14 wiree has a Q of roughly 25. The iron core coil Klipsch used in the AA was only about 15. Both Bob and I measured both coils and got the same results. Q, of course, represents losses. This is probably a size / performance trade-off. Al K. ---------------- So Al you can be quoted as saying "Bigger is better"?
  20. I myself prefer the black speaker cloth, a much warmer and darker tone. I like the added bass and midrange warmth. Think of a black t-shirt on a sunny day. The beige or white is so much cooler,(bright and edgy)that it is simply unbearable to listen to while I drink my leinenkugel's creamy dark beer. Mark, will I have a problem with blueberries not mixing with a good cold adult malted beverage. If so is it too late to renegotiate? Maybe changing the faceplate to limburger or something? Please help me here, I'm in turmoil.

I built two identical 50W tube amps. One had the normal working components on a small chassis. The other was the same circuit and parts, however it was on a HUGE chassis, with two extra large (but not connected) old power transformers and a half-dozen extra "Milk Bottle" capacitors on the chassis - also not connected to anything. In A/B listening tests, about 9 of 10 listeners "preferred" the larger, heavier amplifier. Ok, no big deal. But what was fascinating was the WHY part. "Much heavier and stronger bass!" "More Balls!" "Stiffer and more robust!" were the typical comments. It was clear to me that the eyes were creating an expectation of something better in the bigger, heavier, more complex looking amp. Weird relationships were being formed between bigness, heavyness, complexity and adjectives of sound perception. And likewise gold looks warmer than platinum or silver. Metal sounds tinnier than carbon and right on down the line. I've seen this for so many years I just assume it is an unavoidable aspect of human nature. Electricity and magnetism are pretty abstract concepts and something is needed to bring it into a graspable form, I suppose. mdeneen ---------------- And I'm thinking of juicy blueberries and warm pie! 25. Nice work on the speakers and the crossover network. Show us the paper.
