T2K
Steve(avman),any knowledge or experience with the Sony SACD/DVD player, I think the model is DVP-NS500V? (Sorry about the change of subject matter!) Keith
badbob
Spikes - Tightened up the bass. More of a 'thump' than a 'boom'. Bi-wire - Bigger/Wider soundstage. IMO, Although the results from these changes were small, there was a positive audible difference.

lynnm
avman Here are the "tweaks" that I have applied to my system - I have found no need to futz with the speakers themselves. The speakers are bi-wired and spiked. I have also spent a lot of time experimenting with placement. When I first entered the forum crowing about the breathtaking good speakers that sold themselves to me one of the inmates congratulated me and predicted a short - sharp upgrade path. He called that one right! These speakers are mercilessly revealing of any deficiencies in your equipment and your your listening room. The equipment upgrades tend to be expensive. The room taming can be accomplished rather inexpensively. Equipment Upgrades: Swapped out a 200/400w./ch. SS Receiver,(Hitachi SR 2004) for a 30w/channel tube amp(Antique Sound Lab AQ1003DT) - (no fights invited here - that SS receiver is a beauty - as are any quality SS amps/receivers) - I happen to prefer the sound of a high quality tube amp). Cost C$ 1200.00 Swapped in a Cambridge Audio D500se CD player to replace an old Nakamichi unit. Cost C$ 600.00 Swapped in an used Ariston Audio RD80 Turntable,(the template for the Linn LP12) with a Grado cartridge to replace my old Sony TT with a Shure V15 III. Cost C$ 250.00 Equipment upgrades Cost: C$ 2050.00 On a scale of 1 to 10 these post KLF30 upgrades taken together I would rate at 6.5-7.5 as an improvement over the system's sound. Room tweak: Acoustic baffles DYI'd based on the following article: http://www.geocities.com/jonrisch/a.htm Cost for a set of 4 panels,(with enough material to apply additional reflection damping for wall/ceiling joints etc.): C$ 100.00 Construction time for myself and 1 helper was about 3/4 hour per each panel. Improvement on the above on the same scale - 6.0 - 7.0! This is the most cost effective improvement I have ever encountered. The sound stage is wider and deeper. The sweet spot is much wider. Seating position is not nearly as critical as it once was. Yes there is still a best seat in the room but now the sound stage is natural and deep virtually anywhere in the room. I am hearing detail that I had never perceived in my recordings - (Have you ever heard the microphone being shifted in cut 1 of the "O Brother Where Art Thou" CD? My wife heard it and drew my attention to it! The mike was obviously attached to a flexible gooseneck -(creak,crickle,crickle). A few seconds into that "Po' Lazarus" cut one of the wood choppers chuckles - I never heard that until I used these panels. Overall the main knock on horn loaded loudspeakers has been that they are "In your face" ie. Hot in the mid-range. I have never entirely bought that but I do think that horn mids do have a tendency to "beam" and the reflection from the near walls can definitely muddy the sound. These acoustic panels kill the first,(and most powerful) reflection which leads to the improvements I have heard. Trust me make a pair of the panels and after a week you'll be building the second set - Been There Done That. HornEd
lynnm, thanks for reminding us that room acoustics are a primary factor in the sound we hear... and that we can do something about it. In effect, while thinking outside the box may help... thinking of your system without the room leads to expensive tweaks! Getting your room to agree with your choice of speakers should always be a primary concern. -HornED
TritonMI
I have my 30's spiked and have double bi-wired them using Audioquest type4 and CV-4. I think there was quite an improvement in the seperation of the highs and lows and as you have stated the bass is tighter using the spikes. izmasterzvois
Spike (tighter bass), biwire (better mids and highs, open up the stage) first. Then put a lot of plasticine on the external of the horns. It damps the horns (made of platic, which is not very good ) and thus improves the quality of the mids. Maybe next, I'll do some internal rewiring with high quality wire (teflon insulated silver or something more usual ?), and replace some parts of the cross-over. But I would NOT change the design itself, just improve the parts.
