fakesports
So I picked up a pair of '78 La Scalas yesterday and noticed that one speaker sounds more muffled and quiet compared to the other which is rich and musical. The woofer is especially bad, sounds loose and messy compared to the tight bass in the other. Any advice on how to troubleshoot? Could this just be an old crossover? Thanks
Deang
Well, the crossovers are definitely due for a rework, but they should still be in working order. Start by tightening the screws on the barrier strip of the crossover on the problem speaker. Check your wiring and make sure all of your drivers are working. Report back. fakesports
Tightened all the screws and checked all the drivers, they're all working, but the problem persists. When I shift the balance to the good speaker, the bass is tight, but it's so loose on the other one. Thanks for your help on this.
Deang
You probably need to pull that woofer and do a physical inspection. Make sure polarity isn't reversed on the wiring.
fakesports
Okay. Anything I should know about doing this? After the screws are off and I remove the base to inspect the woofer, is there a glue or sealant or anything involved in closing it back up? Sorry, am a relative novice working on speakers. Deang
Nope, nothing wierd like glue or sealant. It's a relatively straight forward process. Just screws.
djk
The foam tape gasket on the loading door will have turned to goo and will make it necessary to pry the door loose. Clean off the goo and use fresh foam tape.
ricktate
Can you define ..loose... not sure what you mean? Does it rattle to? Rick
ricktate
Maybe a rodent nest inside front of the woofer. Or torn woofer could be almost anything. Check OHMs of woofer before you get to far into it unhook wires from crossover and let us know what the OHMs were. Rick
fakesports
Will inspect the woofer this afternoon and let you know. Pardon my ignorance, what does OHM mean? Thanks.
fakesports
Can you define ..loose... not sure what you mean? Does it rattle to? Rick basically at louder volumes the woofer is rattling and you hear vibrations inside the enclosure vs a clean musical sound.
ricktate
It means resistance on a multi-meter if you dont have access to one go ahead and take bottom off see what you can see. May have to take woofer out to see in front of it. Be carefull taking woofer out un- hook wires lay face down makes it easier to extract. ricktate
Well sounds like woofer is just loose to me. If you can get a multimetter and test OHMs thats resitance of the voice coil. Lay speaker face down to remove woofer if you have to, makes it easeir .The bottom will be hard to get off do to age.
Deang
Sounds like you just need to get into the doghouse and tighten the woofer back down to the motorboard.
Marvel
The foam tape gasket on the loading door will have turned to goo and will make it necessary to pry the door loose. I thought I would never get them off the $100 cabs I got last summer.Bruce
fakesports
Tightened the hell out of the woofer (it seemed fastened well to begin with) and the problem persists. It's fair to say that a crossover issue wouldn't lead to something like that, right? Thanks
runninshine
Swap the networks and if it follows, then you know its a network issue.
Deang
Agreed -- but I'll be surprised if it's the network. OTOH, I'm O.K. with surprises.
fakesports
Swapped networks and the woofer/bass problem remains with the problem speaker. I guess that pinpoints the woofer as the problem, so that's good to know.
fakesports
If anyone has a lead on a replacement woofer, let me know. Appreciate it.
