phishken
I was actually amazed to see some nicer equipment. Nad, Adcom, HK, and Klipsch. They had a HK AVR 500 for $475, not too sure thats a good deal. The unit appears to be from '99. Anyway, I got to check out a pair of KLF 30s up close. Jesus they are large but they sounded beautiful. Price tag of $1100 but could probably be had cheaper. The speakers are in Tulsa, OK. if anyone is interested speak up. ken
kenratboy
Pawn shops tend to charge WAY too much for ANYTHING! I know a jewelery dealer who went through some pawn shops with me (here in Reno) and he told me there were no real deals on anything, fair enough- I have seen many cases where a pawn shop would be selling gear for MORE THAN NEW, even if it was a few years old!!! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. Mighty Favog
Kenratboy- I totally agree. There is a Pawn shop about seven blocks from my office and this guy wanted $1,100 for a McIntosh MC250 amp. Ya now the ones that LOOK like tube amps but aren't? I've seen these on eBay for no more than $500.... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
phishken
I agree completely. If I could get the klf's at a good price I might consider it, but right now I have my heart set on some Hersheys.
Flason
Pawnshops around here use e-bay and yahoo shopper as their guidelines for pricing equipment. If you go to one and the person behind the counter is somewhat cool, then you can barter and get a good deal. On the other hand, some of the crew working at these places tend to be folks McDonalds turned down and they have a giant chip on their shoulder. It's those you want to stay away from and try to talk with the manager. If the item is there for over 30 days, they will deal. I saw a pair of KG5.5's here and the price was 600. Just cause I like to haggle, I had the guy down to $350 out the door. Unfortunately, I can't fit another set of speakers in my house. fini
Kenratboy-I agree. The Reno pawn shops (downtown, around the casinos) seem epecially over-priced. We're up there with a bus-load of friends every Superbowl, and I usually take a stroll into the pawn shops. It's probably just as well that there are no audio bargains to be had there: the bus is usually full. fini
Mikekid
Most pawn shops are a joke alright. I was in one there in Reno a couple of years ago, picked up a Fender guitar and started goofing around with it. I put it back and head for the door. One of the salesmen stopped me and asked if I liked that guitar. I said yes (It was one of the few in excellent shape) but the price was WAY to high. He offered it at 1/2 price. This was the one and only time I could have gotten a deal at one of those places. I have been in many! I should have bought it!!! sseymour
I got a $600 Gucci watch for $100 at a pawn shop. That was my only experience. -Scott ------------------ KG-4 Fronts RC-3 Center Klipsch Quintet Surrounds DIY Sub based on Adire Audio Shiva Woofer Sony DB830
kenratboy
Maybe there is a lesson here, offer HALF or TWO-THIRDS of the asking price and see what happens. A lot of the pawn shops here in Reno (ESPECIALLY Downtown) cater to people who have WON a jackpot and want a fat diamond ring or a video camera. There are a lot of tools and car stereos in pawn shops, talk about losing your shirt! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. Mallette
There was a time not too many years ago when pawn shops were the perfect place to get a bargain. Used to spend Saturdays with a bud on pawn shop crawl. The owner knew nothing about nor cared to learn about audio gear, loaned little on it and charged little more. Unfortunately, the independents were all bought up in the DFW area by chains like American Pawn, etc. They research and price every item accordingly. I don't bother to go to them anymore. No more likely to get a surprise deal there than McDonalds. The Canton First Monday Trade days near Dallas was over 200 acres of the best goody hunting imaginable until maybe 3 years ago. Now all the good stuff is gone to Ebay. Nothing but arts and crafts left... (SIGH) The world is gettin SO homogenized. Dave ------------------ David A. Mallett Average system component age: 30 years.
